Jazz-Pistons Preview

The Utah Jazz have problems, but nothing as severe as those potentially surrounding the Detroit Pistons.

Coming off their first victory under coach Tyrone Corbin, the Jazz look to win consecutive games for the first time in more than a month Saturday night while trying to continue their recent dominance of a Pistons club with issues on and off the court.

Utah (32-27) snapped a five-game skid with a 95-84 victory at Indiana on Friday in its first game since trading All-Star Deron Williams to New Jersey for veteran Devin Harris, rookie forward Derrick Favors, two first-round draft picks and cash.

Harris finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Al Jefferson scored 30 points and Paul Millsap added 23 with 18 boards as the Jazz improved to 1-4 since Corbin took over after Jerry Sloan abruptly retired Feb. 10.

The victory was the fifth in 19 games for the Jazz, tied with Memphis for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"We still have a chance to do something special," said Jefferson, averaging 28.8 points the last four games. "We've got to come together and stick together and try to make a big run at the end of the season."

Utah has a good chance to make a run in a positive direction by winning back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 12-14.

The Jazz have won 11 straight against Detroit - tied for their longest current winning stretch against an opponent.

Utah will try for a sixth consecutive road win over the Pistons, who have given up 106.4 points per game to the Jazz in their last five meetings at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Millsap had 15 points with 10 rebounds in a 102-97 home win over the Pistons (21-39) on Jan. 3.

He's averaged 21.0 points the last three games overall and might be in for another big effort against Detroit, which could again be short-handed after using only six players in Friday's 110-94 loss at Philadelphia.

Several Pistons missed at least part of the team's shootaround Friday.

Richard Hamilton, Chris Wilcox, Rodney Stuckey and Austin Daye missed the bus, with Stuckey and Daye arriving late. Tayshaun Prince had an upset stomach, Tracy McGrady a headache and Ben Wallace tended to an unspecified family matter.

None played Friday night, and when suggested that those players had other motives for skipping the shootaround, coach John Kuester said, "sometimes perception is different than reality."

Kuester, who benched the disgruntled Hamilton on Jan. 12, was ejected in the second quarter Friday after he was whistled for two quick technical fouls. McGrady and his teammates laughed as their coach headed toward the locker room.

The possibility of dissension could stem from the Pistons' season-long struggles. They are 6 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot in the East, have lost six of seven and rank near the bottom of the league in scoring (95.1 ppg).

"I feel badly for John Kuester," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I think it's a black eye for the league. I know Detroit is in disarray right now at some level. You worry about a coach and, you know, his psyche after something like that happens."

Amid the possible team turmoil, Will Bynum scored 29 points while playing all 48 minutes. Greg Monroe added 16 with 11 rebounds as Detroit remained competitive despite its lack of personnel.

The Pistons have not beaten Utah since March 13, 2005.

Pistons bounce back, beat Jazz 120-116

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) John Kuester let out a noticeable sigh, then started walking off the court victoriously.

One win might not cure all that ails the Detroit Pistons, but on this night, the beleaguered coach could be proud of his team's effort.

Rodney Stuckey scored 28 points and made a big steal in the final minute, and the Pistons bounced back from an embarrassing start to the weekend with a 120-116 win over the Utah Jazz on Saturday. One night earlier, Detroit used only six players in a lopsided loss at Philadelphia after several Pistons missed at least part of a team shootaround.

"We've had a lot of interesting things happen to our team," Kuester said. "The guys that were out there tonight, God bless them. They really worked hard tonight. This shows that no one is entitled to anything. You earn respect every day, not from the past."

Stuckey and Austin Daye, who arrived late to the shootaround and didn't play Friday, were back on the court against the Jazz. Daye scored 18 points, 11 in the fourth quarter.

Paul Millsap led Utah with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Will Bynum, who had played all 48 minutes against Philadelphia, put Detroit ahead for good with a driving three-point play that made it 111-108 with 1:52 remaining.

"This was fun," Bynum said. "We had a lot of energy out there. I know that we shot the ball well, but I think the effort was the important part."

Millsap then appeared to be hit in the head while losing the ball inside, and when the Pistons came up with it, the Jazz had to foul to prevent a 5-on-4 situation while their forward was slow getting up. Bynum made both free throws to push the lead back to five.

Utah cut the lead to 114-112 when Al Jefferson scored inside with 27.4 seconds remaining, but Stuckey made two free throws, then swiped a Jazz pass to help the Pistons hold on.

"We were close tonight, but we broke down a couple times defensively," Utah guard Raja Bell said. "I think we all understood that they were going to be dangerous tonight. In this league it is funny that when guys have their backs up against a wall and undermanned they are dangerous."

Seven Pistons missed at least part of Friday's shootaround, and none of them played against the 76ers. The team said Richard Hamilton, Chris Wilcox, Stuckey and Daye missed the bus, with Stuckey and Daye able to arrive late.

Tayshaun Prince, Tracy McGrady and Ben Wallace also missed the shootaround. The team said Prince had an upset stomach, McGrady had a headache and Wallace was tending to a family matter.

Wallace was unavailable Saturday night following the death of his brother earlier in the day, and Prince and McGrady didn't play either. Kuester said McGrady was sick and Prince had a back problem. Hamilton remained out with a sore groin.

Kuester started Stuckey, Daye and Wilcox against Utah.

Kuester brushed off talk of a possible mutiny after Friday's shootaround, and Daye - in his second season in the league - insisted after Saturday's game his relationship with the coach is fine.

"I have no problems with Coach - he plays me a lot," Daye said. "I should have been on time, and I got punished. It was embarrassing for me to do that. There's no excuse for a second-year player to miss a bus because of a miscommunication. I don't hold any grudge for sitting out last night. I apologized to Coach and told him it was the right decision."

Kuester said before the game he was ready to move on, and the Pistons won for the first time without Hamilton, Prince and Wallace since April 8, 2002. Detroit also put up its highest point total of the season, and beat Utah for the first time in 12 meetings.

Ben Gordon scored 17 points for the Pistons, and Charlie Villanueva added 16. Rookie Greg Monroe contributed 12 points and 16 rebounds, and Bynum scored 11 in 22:41 of action - an easy night's work compared to Friday.

The Jazz, a picture of stability for so many years, are going through their own transition following the Feb. 10 resignation of longtime coach Jerry Sloan. Utah also traded star point guard Deron Williams to New Jersey on Wednesday.

Devin Harris and Derrick Favors, both acquired in that trade, combined for 27 points against Detroit. Harris finished with 17 points and 12 assists in his first start in a Utah uniform.

Andrei Kirilenko scored 21 points and Jefferson added 20 for the Jazz, who shot 59.5 percent from the field.

The Jazz led 95-88 in the fourth quarter before Detroit went on a 12-0 run that included five points each by Daye and Gordon.

"Defensively we are struggling out there in spurts," said Tyrone Corbin, Utah's interim coach. "We are just looking for something good to happen so that we can start feeling good about ourselves."

NOTES: All five Utah starters were in double figures. ... The Pistons led by as many as 11 in the first half and were ahead 58-53 at halftime. ... Detroit owner Karen Davidson said she had no comment on the status of the team's possible sale.

THE FACTS: The controversy-riddled Detroit Pistons scored a season-high in points while defeating the Utah Jazz Saturday night 120-116. Guard Rodney Stuckey, one of seven players benched Friday after missing the morning shootaround in Philadelphia, had 28 points and eight assists as the Pistons ended an 11-game losing streak to Utah.

QUOTABLE: "It's inexcusable for a second-year player to be late. I got benched for the game and I understood why. I didn't hold a grudge. I told Coach when I saw him that it was the right decision. He stepped up and started me and I proved his point that I can play well when he puts me out there."
-- Pistons forward Austin Daye, who was one of the players benched the previous game. Daye and Stuckey were late to Friday's shootaround because of what Daye said was a miscommunication on the time of the shootaround.

THE STAT: April 8, 2002. The Pistons won for the first time in nearly 11 years without Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince or Ben Wallace appearing in the game. That was before Hamilton and Prince joined the team for the 2002-03 season. Hamilton, who has been at the center of the controversy between the players and head coach John Kuester, sat behind the bench in street clothes. Prince dressed but missed the game with a sore back. Wallace is out indefinitely because of a death in his family.

TURNING POINT: The Pistons reeled off 12 unanswered points after falling behind by seven early in the fourth. Ben Gordon and Daye sparked the run with five points apiece, which gave Detroit a 100-95 lead.

QUOTABLE II: "There was a cohesiveness we haven't had. There was an energy we haven't had on a consistent basis."

HOT: Daye scored 18 points, two shy of his season high. He tied the game at 108-108 with a 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining as part of an 11-point fourth quarter.

NOT: Utah point guard Devin Harris, making his first start since being traded from New Jersey earlier in the week, shot 3-for-9 from the field. He missed a layup with his team down three with 1:35 left.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Pistons backup point guard Will Bynum followed up his 29-point performance against the Sixers with an 11-point, eight-assist, four-steal outing before fouling out. He has reached double figures in six of the last 10 games.

ROOKIE WATCH: Pistons center Greg Monroe notched his 11th double-double and fourth straight with 12 points and 16 rebounds. He's averaging 16.8 points and 12.8 rebounds in the last four games.

NOTABLE: Detroit's last victory over Utah was March 13, 2005. ... Utah fell to 1-5 under coach Ty Corbin. ... Utah racked up 37 assists on 44 field goals. ...
