Kings-Bobcats Preview

With owner Michael Jordan participating in drills during practice and sitting courtside come game time, the Charlotte Bobcats know they are expected to play at a high level.

If they're going to meet those expectations and advance to the playoffs for the second straight season, they will have to do so without Gerald Wallace.

A day after Wallace and backup center Nazr Mohammed were traded in separate deals, the Bobcats will try to win their third straight at Time Warner Cable Arena on Friday night when they face the Sacramento Kings.

Despite turning 48 last Thursday, Jordan has been spending more time recently as a participant in practices. He may have lost a few steps since his last NBA game nearly eight years ago, but the Hall of Fame guard has not lost his competitiveness.

"Mike is winning some of our drills ... and I lay in on (the guys), 'How you going to let this man come out and beat you guys?'" coach Paul Silas said. "It's fun. They're into it, and that's what's most important is that they're buying in."

A 114-101 victory over Toronto on Tuesday left a smile on Jordan's face as the Bobcats began the unofficial second half of the season with their third win in four games.

Following Wednesday's practice, Wallace talked about how pleased he was with the team's intensity, but the veteran forward, who averaged 16.4 points and 7.5 rebounds in six-plus seasons with the club, won't be with the Bobcats (25-32) as they try to catch Indiana for the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff spot.

Wallace was sent to Portland before Thursday's trade deadline for center Joel Przybilla, forward Dante Cunningham and two first-round picks.

Charlotte traded Mohammed to Oklahoma City for forward D.J. White and guard Morris Peterson.

Sacramento (14-41) could have guard Marcus Thornton available after acquiring him from New Orleans on Wednesday for forward Carl Landry.

Thornton could back up second-year player Jermaine Taylor, who is making the most of his opportunity with Tyreke Evans sidelined at least three weeks with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

Taylor, acquired from Houston in December for a second-round pick, is averaging 17.0 points and shooting 21 of 35 from the field while starting the last three games. He scored a career-high 21 points in Wednesday's 111-105 victory at Orlando.

"(Evans' injury) is not something you want to see, but it's the NBA. It happens," Taylor said. "As long as I'm in the starting spot, I'm going to take advantage of it and go out there and have fun and play."

The Kings, who will be trying to win two straight for the first time since Jan. 28-29, have dropped five in a row against Charlotte and are 1-5 all-time at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Bobcats leading scorer Stephen Jackson, who had a team-high 21 points in a 94-89 victory in Sacramento on Jan. 25, is expected to play after leaving Tuesday's game with a strained left hamstring.

Bobcats beat Kings 110-98 without Wallace

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Gerald Wallace's locker had been cleared and reassigned. He was edited out of the pregame video and Stephen Jackson replaced him as the last player introduced.

For a night, at least, the Charlotte Bobcats didn't need their former All-Star forward. With Jackson scoring 30 points, D.J. Augustin adding 23 and Gerald Henderson stepping up in Wallace's place, the undermanned Bobcats pulled away to beat the Sacramento Kings 110-98 on Friday.

But life without Wallace, the last original member of the 7-year-old franchise, was a jolt to nearly everyone involved in the organization.

"Me and Gerald had a routine. We go out, walk out, warm up together," Jackson said. "It felt different not having my brother here with me, man."

A day after trading their second-leading scorer to Portland, the Bobcats pulled away in the fourth quarter despite dressing only eight players. Henderson, replacing Wallace in the starting lineup, scored 10 of his 21 points in the final period.

Kwame Brown, the only available center, added 12 points and 13 rebounds and Charlotte moved within a half-game of Indiana for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"If we lose this game, it's an uphill climb," coach Paul Silas said.

Short-handed or not, most teams expect to beat the struggling Kings these days, who are without injured star Tyreke Evans, are facing distractions about possible relocation and now have more questions regarding DeMarcus Cousins.

The rookie, who was disciplined for getting into a fight with a teammate earlier this month, was benched 25 seconds into the third quarter after a silly turnover and sat out most of the second half.

Cousins declined to speak to reporters.

"I'd rather not address that right now," coach Paul Westphal said. "I thought it was the right move at the time."

Samuel Dalembert, getting extra playing time in Cousins' place, had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Kings fell to 2-4 on a seven-game road trip.

"It's one of the worst games we played this year, especially on defense," guard Beno Udrih said.

It was a strange sight at Time Warner Cable Arena without Wallace, a former Kings benchwarmer who went from an expansion draft pickup to the face of the Bobcats.

Owner Michael Jordan sent him west to cut costs and begin a rebuilding effort despite Charlotte still being in playoff contention.

The Bobcats got two first-round picks, center Joel Przybilla, forward Dante Cunningham and forward Sean Marks, who will be waived. Przybilla, Cunningham and D.J. White, acquired in a separate deal with Oklahoma City for Nazr Mohammed, weren't eligible to play because all the players in the deals hadn't completed their physicals.

Jackson, who moved to Wallace's old small forward spot, shook off another technical foul to hit 11 of 19 shots and all but two of his 10 free-throw attempts.

Augustin constantly beat Udrih off the dribble in hitting nine of 11 shots and Henderson continued his strong play that helped fuel the decision to trade Wallace.

"You dream of being in the NBA, you dream of starting, you dream of playing against the best players," Henderson said.

The Kings, who took 14 fewer free throws, did get 14 points from Marcus Thornton in his Sacramento debut after he was acquired from New Orleans on Wednesday in what's been a tumultuous week.

The Kings filed a request Thursday for an extension of the NBA's March 1 deadline to seek permission to relocate for next season. Unable to secure funding for a new arena, the Kings have been in discussions with officials in Anaheim, Calif., NBA Commissioner David Stern said.

Sacramento, coming off an impressive victory at Orlando on Wednesday, gave Charlotte trouble early.

Already short-handed, a nervous Silas yanked Jackson 2 minutes into the game when he picked up his 14th technical foul of the season. It came less than a minute after Eli Roe, who ejected Jackson from a game earlier this season, called him for a charge.

"I just told him that he had to cool down," Silas said.

Jackson, now two technicals shy of an automatic one-game suspension, avoided an ejection while getting to the free-throw line frequently even as it felt odd without Wallace.

"I think it's going to feel like this for a while, not having him by my side," he said.

NOTES: Westphal said he hasn't addressed the franchise's uncertain future with the players. "Not at all," he said. "We just talk about the games." ... Silas expects the three players Charlotte will keep in the two deals, Przybilla, Cunningham and White, to practice Saturday. ... The Bobcats are expected to attempt to re-sign F Derrick Brown once they waive Marks and Morris Peterson, acquired in the Thunder trade. ... Udrih had 11 points and 13 assists.

THE FACTS: Stephen Jackson scored 30 points, D.J. Augustin had 23 and Gerald Henderson added 21 points to lead an under-manned Charlotte Bobcats team to a 110-98 victory over the Sacramento Kings Friday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlotte had just eight healthy bodies at its disposal after a pair of trades Thursday. Samuel Dalembert scored 18 to lead seven Kings players in double figures.

QUOTABLE: I didn't really change anything I do. I still had the same mindset to bring energy and be aggressive. It was an up and down game and I got some things going in the second half. You get a little tired out there, but you have to play through it. It shows a lot about out team with the way we responded tonight. We played strong and together tonight and it felt good out there.

THE STAT: Aggressiveness. The Bobcats got to the free throw line 35 times Friday night compared to just 21 times for the Kings. That advantage led to an extra six points by the Bobcats. That offensive aggressiveness translated to the defensive end as well where Charlotte forced 18 turnovers and converted them into 25 points.

TURNING POINT: Quick burst. The Bobcats put the Kings away for good on a quick burst of points in early in the fourth quarter. Kwame Brown laid it in off a nice feed from Matt Carroll for a nine points cushion which shortly thereafter went to 11 points on a reverse lay-up from Gerald Henderson off a turnover by DeMarcus Cousins. It was two of 25 points the Bobcats scored off Sacramento turnovers.

HOT: D.J. Augustin. The Charlotte point guard continued his hot hand since the all-star break. Augustin scored 23 points on nine-of-11 shooting with three assists, three rebounds and three steals. He is averaging 23.0 points, 5.5 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals since the all-star break in back-to-back wins for Charlotte.

NOT: Boris Diaw. The Bobcats forward struggled on the offensive end after drawing some tough defensive assignments Friday night against Sacramento. Diaw had just two points on 1-for-6 shooting with only two assists and three rebounds.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Stephen Jackson. The Bobcats captain and go-to scorer went 11-of-19 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe in scoring a game-high 30 points. He added five rebounds, three assists and one steal. The Bobcats leading scorer will have an even larger role offensively with the trade of Gerald Wallace to the Portland Trail Blazers Thursday afternoon.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Michael Jordan was seated in his usual seat adjacent to the Bobcats bench. The team was also having a special midnight sale for the newly released Air Jordan 13 Retros including a chance to win a pair autographed by Jordan himself.

BAD MOVE: Defending D.J. Augustin. Sacramento kept Beno Udrih on Augustin throughout the second half as Augustin erupted for a 13 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance in the second half.

ROOKIE WATCH: Sacramento rookie DeMarcus Cousins had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the season. Pooh Jeter played 11 minutes with just two points.

NOTABLE: Charlotte has won four of its last five overall including three straight at home. Stephen Jackson reached the 30-point mark for the sixth time this season. Kwame Brown had his sixth double-double of the season while D.J. Augustin had his 15th 20-point game this season. The Kings tied a Bobcats opponent season-low for points in the second quarter with 14. Sacramento had four players with double-doubles with Jason Thompson, DeMarcus Cousins and Samuel Dalembert having points-rebounds and Beno Udrih getting a points-assists double-double. Gerald Henderson has scored in double figures in the last four games and is averaging 19.0 in that stretch.
