After failing to acquire one All-Star prior to the trade deadline, New Jersey was able to land another. That still might not be enough to help the Nets win in San Antonio for the first time in more than nine years.

Deron Williams is expected to make his Nets debut Friday night when they try to avoid a ninth consecutive road defeat to the Spurs, who have not lost at home in almost three months.

When New Jersey (17-40) lost out on Carmelo Anthony this week, it moved fast to acquire the two-time All-Star point guard from Utah on Wednesday for Devin Harris, rookie Derrick Favors, two first-round draft picks and $3 million in cash in a deal that stunned most of the league, including Williams.

"Very rarely are you able to trade for someone who is arguably the best at his position," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "We had to give up a lot, but when you get a chance to get him, you go for it. It wasn't a planned trade.

"This wasn't a plan B. He's a plan A guy. We eventually had to do something like this to get a player of this skill level."

The club hopes Williams can be the focal point when it moves into the new Brooklyn arena for the 2012-13 season, but Williams said he will not make a decision on whether to opt out of his contract with the Nets until next season. The sixth-year veteran is scheduled to make $17.7 million in 2012-13, but can walk away from that deal after 2011-12.

The Nets would rather focus on Williams helping them avoid a fourth straight loss in their first game since the All-Star break.

Though Williams apparently had his issues with recently retired Utah coach Jerry Sloan, he averaged a career-high 21.3 points with 9.7 assists for the Jazz this season.

"Whatever his relationship with coach Sloan, that will not have any affect on our relationship," Johnson said. "I have never had a point guard with Deron's talent level and skill level. I've coached some terrific guys, but with the package he brings to the table, we're really excited."

Johnson hopes Williams can pay immediate dividends for the Nets, who have averaged 80.3 points during an eight-game skid in San Antonio dating to a 92-86 win there Jan. 22, 2002.

Williams has averaged 20.0 points his last six games at San Antonio and scored a season-high 39 against the Spurs in Utah on Jan. 26.

The Nets have lost 15 of 16 overall to San Antonio (47-10), including 102-85 at home Feb. 14.

Manu Ginobili had 22 points in that contest and 21 in a 97-85 win over New Jersey in the teams' last meeting in San Antonio on Jan. 10, 2010.

The All-Star swingman had just 11 points, but Tony Parker added 20 and Gary Neal 19 off the bench as the Spurs improved to 26-2 at home with a 109-105 win over Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Owner of the NBA's best record, San Antonio has a chance to win 20 straight at home for the first time in a season since Nov. 11-1989-Feb. 6, 1990.

"It's great, it's been big, the homecourt," Ginobili told the Spurs' official website. "But it's just a stat."

Parker has totaled 46 points the last two games.

Williams has double-double but loses Nets debut

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Deron Williams broke a huddle with "Go Jazz!"

He's kept a sense of humor since his stunning trade to New Jersey. And after his debut with the Nets, a 106-96 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night, owner Mikhail Prokhorov began courting his new superstar to stick around in New Jersey beyond next season.

Prokhorov's sales pitch? It began by interrupting a Vancouver ski trip and flying to San Antonio to see his new All-Star point guard - the first time Prokhorov has traveled for a Nets road game.

"It was good to see him. It meant a lot," said Williams, who had 14 points and 12 assists.

Manu Ginobili had 26 points for the Spurs, who despite being the NBA's winningest team, spent the game overshadowed by the 17-win Nets with Williams playing his first NBA game in something other than a Jazz uniform.

Even the Spurs seemed eager to see Williams. Tony Parker, who had 13 points and 10 assists, took Williams to lunch before the game at an Italian restaurant. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who had Williams on his West best last weekend at the All-Star game, shared a few laughs with the two-time All-Star before tipoff.

"He looked really good calling plays and running the show," Ginobili said.

Williams was dealt by Utah on Wednesday in a blockbuster deal before the trade deadline that none saw coming. He went 5 for 13 and played 41 minutes, and helped the lowly Nets keep it interesting against the team with the league's best record.

"It was different at first. I wasn't really nervous or anything," Williams said. "It's just good to be back on the court. I'm excited for this opportunity and to play for these guys and coach (Avery) Johnson, and to make the most of it," Williams said.

Anthony Morrow led the Nets with 25 points.

The Nets led at halftime before the Spurs nearly doubled-up New Jersey in the third quarter, outscoring the Nets 35-18. DeJuan Blair and Tim Duncan finished with 17 points apiece for the Spurs, who pushed their home record to 27-2.

Johnson said before the game they'd have to "wing it" in the first game with Williams, who New Jersey wants to make the long-term face of their franchise. Williams has made no commitment beyond 2012, when he can opt out of his contract.

Williams met after the game with Prokhorov; he said the two will continue talking in London, where the Nets will play Toronto twice starting March 4.

"He was telling me how excited he was, and he wanted to see me in person," Williams said.

Prokhorov did not speak with reporters.

New Jersey shipped point guard Devin Harris, rookie forward Derrick Favors, the No. 3 pick overall in the draft; two first-round draft picks and $3 million in cash for Williams, who had spent all six of his NBA seasons with the Jazz.

The NBA's third-leading assist man didn't look as comfortable once the game started. Williams missed four of his first five shots and weathered the expected handful of broken plays, like a bounce pass Brook Lopez didn't see coming and skipped untouched to the scorer's table.

Williams headlined the 13th different Nets starting lineup, which also included rookie forward Damion James, who played for the first time since Dec. 9 after breaking his right foot.

James, making his second career start, finished with seven points and four rebounds in 20 minutes.

"We're a work in progress, but it's exciting with the possibilities of our future," Johnson said after the game.

The Spurs (48-10) moved within two wins of tying their number of victories from last year, during what is so far San Antonio's best regular season in franchise history.

Notes: Williams blamed his poor shooting on again tweaking a strained tendon in his wrist that has bothered him for weeks. ...Rookie Spurs F Gary Neal didn't play after feeling headaches and sensitivity to light following the morning shootaround. Neal banged his head hard on the baseline in Wednesday's win over Oklahoma City but still returned to finish that game ... The Nets haven't won in San Antonio since 2002 (nine games).

Nets-Spurs notebook

THE FACTS: Deron Williams scored 14 points and had 12 assists, but his debut with the New Jersey Nets came at the wrong time and place. The Spurs' league-best record and 20-game home court winning streak proved too much when Manu Ginobili scored 26 points and Tony Parker added 13 points and 10 assists for a 106-96 victory over the Nets on Friday at AT&T Center. Five players scored in double figures for San Antonio (48-10). Anthony Morrow came off the bench for New Jersey (17-41) and scored 25.

QUOTABLE: "It was weird at first. We're still getting accustomed to each other. I haven't shot well since I injured my wrist in my first game against San Antonio (while playing for Utah). I pushed it tonight, I think on Manu. It's going to hurt until I rest it."

THE STAT: Williams started the game with two quick assists, then a pair of turnovers on consecutive trips down the floor in the opening 3:30. But he settled in after that and did not turned it over for the next 35 minutes of the game. Bothered by a wrist he banged up early in the game, Williams hit only 5-of-13 shots and missed his three attempts past the 3-point line.

TURNING POINT: New Jersey led at the half (the Nets now are 10-10 when leading at halftime) but were almost doubled up in the third quarter when San Antonio outscored New Jersey 35-18. The Nets had only one fastbreak opportunity and blew that one, while the Spurs converted on 4-of-6 chances for 12 points.

QUOTABLE II: "(Williams) kind of tweaked his wrist tonight and he felt the effects throughout the game. He was really passing the ball. It could have easily been a 20-assist night. Hopefully we can make a few shots." -- Nets coach Avery Johnson.

HOT: DeJuan Blair scored 13 first-quarter points and hit 7-of-8 shots to start the first half and Tim Duncan went 5-of-7 in the third quarter when the Spurs pulled away. Both finished with 8-of-11 shooting nights.

NOT: Richard Jefferson, the former Nets player, missed all seven of his shots from the floor.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov saw his team play a road game for the first time this season. He was nowhere close to the bench, however, viewing the game from an executive suite in the AT&T Center. Henry Cisneros, former HUD secretary in the Clinton administration and former mayor of San Antonio, also had a seat far from courtside.

GOOD MOVE: Morrow was listed as a probable starter on an early lineup card, but he came off the bench instead and scored his 25 points in 30 minutes.

BAD MOVE: Johnson still doesn't have much ammunition among the Nets to stave off an opposing team's surge on the road. Sensing that the Spurs were about to break open the game after scoring 17 of the game's 24 points in a six-minute span of the third quarter, Johnson brought Williams back in after a one-minute rest. It didn't matter. San Antonio scored 15 of the next 21 points and went to the fourth quarter leading 88-72.

ROOKIE WATCH: Damien James (24th overall pick) got his second start of the season and his 18th game played overall. He scored seven points and had four rebounds, but also four turnovers. Both first-year players for the Spurs (Gary Neal and Tiago Splitter) missed the game with injuries.

NOTABLE: The Nets haven't won in San Antonio since Jan. 22, 2002. The Spurs last won 20-straight at home in a single season during the 1989-90 campaign. Sasha Vujacic started for the first time this season.
