Wizards-76ers Preview

The Philadelphia 76ers have been surging for a little more than a month as they rebound from a poor start. Continuing that solid play coming out of the All-Star break may not be a difficult task at all.

The 76ers seek their fourth win in five games Wednesday night when they meet the woeful Washington Wizards for the final time in 2010-11.

Philadelphia lost 13 of its first 16 with two of those defeats coming against Washington (15-40), both in overtime and by a combined three points. On Jan. 20, the 76ers were eight games below .500 and outside the top eight in the Eastern Conference.

They've since gone 10-4 - a stretch highlighted by home wins over league-leading San Antonio, Denver and Utah, and a 34-point victory in Atlanta.

"We have to start believing that we're a really good team," forward Andre Iguodala said. "... We've shown that we can compete with anybody. We've just got to stay consistent and beat the teams we're supposed to (beat). That's the biggest thing."

Philadelphia entered the break following a 114-105 win at Houston last Wednesday. Jrue Holiday had 20 points to lead seven Sixers in double figures, and Iguodala recorded 13 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his first triple-double since March 7, 2007.

With its next victory, Philadelphia (27-29) will exceed last season's total, and the 76ers will now begin a favorable stretch of schedule that could move them further up the East ladder. After Washington, Philadelphia will play Detroit and Cleveland to close February.

"We've got our minds on something else, and that's the playoffs," Holiday said. "To start off 3-13 and kick butt from there on, it's great for us."

Keys to Philadelphia's recent success have been the overall play of Elton Brand and long-range shooting by Louis Williams and Jodie Meeks.

Over the last 14 games, Brand has shot 55.0 percent from the floor while averaging team highs of 16.6 points and 8.8 rebounds. Williams has gone 22 of 51 from beyond the arc and is second with 15.9 points per game in that span, while Meeks has drained a club-best 27 3-pointers.

The 76ers are in position to split this season series after a 109-97 home win over Washington on Jan. 5 behind 26 points each from Holiday and Williams. Philadelphia has taken 15 of the last 20 home meetings with the Wizards.

After alternating wins and losses over its last four games before the break, Washington fell 113-96 on Tuesday at home to Indiana. Andray Blatche scored 21 points, Nick Young added 16 and John Wall chipped in 15 with 10 assists, but also had six turnovers.

"Guys didn't bring no effort," Blatche said. "...For a minute out there, it seems like guys didn't care after a while - like we just gave in to a team that we're definitely much better than them if we compete. But nobody brought heart with them."

Washington has dropped two straight by an average of 21.0 points after snapping a 25-game road losing streak Feb. 13 against NBA-worst Cleveland.

Wall has played well against Philadelphia in his brief career. In three games, he's tallied 72 points, 33 assists and 11 steals - all his most against any opponent.

Center JaVale McGee is averaging a double-double - 10.3 points and 10.0 rebounds - versus Philadelphia this season.

Holiday helps Philadelphia rout Washington

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Philadelphia 76ers kept adding to their huge lead while the Washington Wizards were in the process of adding three new players.

The distraction stemming from the trade was evident on the court, especially during a woeful second half.

"When word got around, guys kind of lost their concentration," Washington coach Flip Saunders said.

Jrue Holiday scored 20 points, Thaddeus Young had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Philadelphia beat the Wizards 117-94 on Wednesday night.

Elton Brand and Evan Turner added 15 points apiece for the Sixers (28-29), who eclipsed last season's win total of 27. Marreese Speights had 14, Jodie Meeks finished with 12 and Andre Iguodala 10.

Philadelphia, which has won 11 of 15, improved to 18-9 at home.

"It was a big win for us," Brand said. "We're playing with a whole lot of confidence now."

John Wall had 21 points and 12 assists for the Wizards, while Trevor Booker tied his career high with 21 points. Andray Blatche had 16 and Nick Young chipped in with 15.

Washington (15-41), one of the worst teams in the league, has lost three straight. With its season long gone, it made a trade during the game to stock up for the future.

The Wizards sent guard Kirk Hinrich and forward Hilton Armstrong to the Atlanta Hawks for guards Mike Bibby and Jordan Crawford, forward Maurice Evans and a 2011 first-round draft choice.

"It was a pretty tough thing to hear," Wall said. "Kirk's a veteran guy who taught me an awful lot about NBA basketball. I'll really miss him. And Hilton was a good friend, too. I wish them both well."

Hinrich and Armstrong were on the bench for the whole first half, but never came out of the locker room after halftime.

"I think when the deadline is over, guys will have a sense of relief," Saunders said.

Meanwhile, Iguodala has been linked to a number of trade scenarios in recent weeks. The trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET on Thursday.

"I like our team," Sixers president Rod Thorn said before the game. "Does that mean we wouldn't do something if the opportunity presented itself? No, we'll look at everything."

Philadelphia carried a 54-49 lead into halftime and grabbed control in the third quarter. Young's thunderous dunk with 3:50 left gave the Sixers a 78-60 lead.

Iguodala hit a 3-pointer during a 7-2 surge that gave Philadelphia a 95-66 lead in the fourth.

"I think it was a great thing to see us push forward in the second half," Young said. "We've had too many games this season where we let teams back in it. We didn't do that this time and I think it's a sign of us maturing as a team."

NOTES: The Sixers are 25-16 since starting the season 3-13. ... Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell attended the game. ... The Wizards fell to 1-27 on the road. ... THE FACTS: Jrue Holiday led seven 76ers in double figures with a team-high 20 points in their 117-94 rout of the Washington Wizards on Wednesday. Thaddeus Young was solid off the bench with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Sixers built a 36-point lead and cruised to the victory, putting them at 28-29. Not bad after a 3-13 start this season. During the game, the Wizards traded guard Kirk Hinrich and forward Hilton Armstrong to the Atlanta Hawks for guards Mike Bibby and Jordan Crawford, forward Maurice Evans and a 2011 first-round draft choice. THE STAT: For the third time in the past four games, the Sixers have placed seven players in double figures.

TURNING POINT: The Sixers broke open the game in the third quarter by outscoring the Wizards 34-15.

HOT: Holiday was 8-or-12 for the Sixers while knocking down both free throws.

NOT: JaVale McGee missed all four shots from the field in 12 minutes for the Wizards.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Not only did Young record a double-double for Philadelphia, but he was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line while adding two steals.

INSIDE THE ARENA: There were a number of empty seats for this game -- not surprising considering the Wizards entered with a 15-40 record. However, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell took in the action courtside.

GOOD MOVE: Sixers coach Doug Collins stuck with Young for most of the third. Young's energy was evident as the Sixers built a commanding 24-point lead.

BAD MOVE: Rashard Lewis only played 12 minutes for the Wizards. He's too good of an offensive player to be on the bench that long.

ROOKIE WATCH: Wall, the Wizards' No. 1 overall pick from Kentucky, had 21 points, 12 assists and five rebounds. Rookie forward Trevor Booker added 21 points, tying his career-high. Kevin Seraphin was scoreless in 10 minutes. Sixers guard Evan Turner, the No. 2 overall pick, had 15 points and eight rebounds.

NOTABLE: The Sixers have scored more than 100 points in eight of the past 11 games, including 110 points or more four times.
