The Houston Rockets have their work cut out for them if they plan on climbing back into the Western Conference playoff picture, but they got off to a good start in their return from the All-Star break.

They'll have a excellent opportunity to keep it going in Cleveland.

The Rockets continue a three-game stretch against some of the East's worst teams Wednesday night at Quicken Loans Arena, where the Cavaliers hope the momentum from beating the league's two-time defending champion hasn't disappeared after a week off.

Houston (27-31) went into the break with three losses in a four-game homestand, dropping it five games out of the West's eighth playoff spot. With visits to Detroit and Cleveland followed by a return home to face New Jersey, though, the Rockets couldn't have asked for a better start to the second half.

They were far from great Tuesday against the Pistons, getting just 49 points from their starting five, but Patrick Patterson stepped up. The rookie put Houston ahead for good at 95-94 with a tip-in, scoring nine of his season-high 20 in the final 3:53 to help seal a 108-100 win.

"It's important because we have seven out of nine on the road to start after the All-Star break," coach Rick Adelman said. "If we want to get back in this thing, we have to win on the road. Winning this game was very important to us."

The Cavaliers (10-46) visited Houston on Dec. 11, early in their hard-to-fathom stretch of 36 losses in 37 games, and watched Kevin Martin score 40 points in a 110-95 defeat.

Cleveland finally snapped its NBA-record 26-game losing streak Feb. 11 against the Los Angeles Clippers, then seemed to be returning to business as usual with a 115-100 loss to Washington two nights later.

But the Cavaliers delivered perhaps their most impressive performance of the season last Wednesday. Ramon Sessions scored a season-high 32 points and Cleveland's typically dreadful defense held Kobe Bryant to 8 of 24 shooting in a stunning 104-99 win over the Lakers.

"It means a great deal," coach Byron Scott said after the Cavaliers avenged their earlier 55-point loss to the Lakers. "First thing that it means is that within the last month we have improved as a basketball team."

Sessions' impressive effort off the bench came after starter Mo Williams injured his right ankle early in the first quarter, an injury that kept him out of practice Monday and Tuesday and has him questionable to face the Rockets.

The possibility of Sessions starting - as he did from Jan. 19-Feb. 11 with Williams injured - shouldn't concern Cleveland. He's averaged 19.6 points, 8.9 assists and 2.0 steals in February while shooting 58.6 percent.

Regardless of who's in the backcourt, the biggest concern Wednesday should be figuring out a way to slow Martin, who's always been a tough cover for the Cavaliers. Martin has scored at least 30 points in each of his last four games against Cleveland - the first three of which came with Sacramento.

Martin, though, has averaged just 13.8 points and shot 32.0 percent in his last four games. The Rockets are 5-13 when he scores 19 points or fewer.

Rockets roar past Cavaliers

CLEVELAND (AP) Shane Battier hasn't been able to ignore the constant trade rumors. They've consumed Houston's forward, playing with his mind and game.

Soon, the talk will end. The deadline is near.

Battier can't wait for it to pass.

"Whether I get moved or not, at least I will have peace of mind," he said.

Reserve Chase Budinger scored a career-high 30 points, including 11 straight in the fourth quarter, and Kevin Martin added 30 more as the Rockets opened the NBA season's unofficial second half with a 124-119 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.

Budinger scored 14 in the fourth, combining with Martin for Houston's final 24 points as the Rockets avoided losing to the NBA's worst team.

Afterward, Battier dressed slowly and iced his knees as he was again asked about the possibility of being dealt by Thursday at 3 p.m. Several teams have shown interest in Battier, whose value is increased because he has an expiring $7.3 million contract.

Battier admitted the talks have been distracting.

"It does take up a lot of your energy because it is so prevalent," said Battier, who has been traded once before. "Everywhere you go, you're asked about it. For me, it is a little bit different. I have never had an expiring contract, so I have been attractive for different reasons. I know I am more tradable, or trade-bait or whatever you want to call it this year."

The Cavaliers, who were coming off a shocking upset of the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in their final game before the All-Star break, played hard but had some bad lapses on defense. Antawn Jamison scored 26 points and Ramon Sessions had 20 and 12 assists.

Cleveland's biggest problem was it couldn't contain Chuck Hayes, who had 17 rebounds - 13 offensive - and helped the Rockets to a 57-37 rebounding advantage.

"We let one guy control the game," Jamison said of Hayes. "He set the tone."

The Rockets are hoping to gain ground in the Western Conference, which has been shaken up by the blockbuster trades of Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams in the past two days. Houston (28-31) began the night in 11th place.

"We go down this stretch of the season and we have to play with desperation every night," coach Rick Adelman said. "Every time we practice and everything we do, we can't think we have accomplished anything. When we get contributions from eight or nine guys we are a pretty good team."

Budinger was an unlikely hero for the Rockets, who have won four straight road games. The 6-foot-7 forward made the most of his 29 minutes, making four 3-pointers and adding eight rebounds. He didn't realize he had scored so many until someone told him afterward.

"During the flow of the game you just play," he said. "Coach left me out there and I was just trying to attack the basket. I didn't even know how many points I had."

Budinger's 3 with 6:15 left put the Rockets ahead 107-104, and he capped his personal 11-point run with a layup to make it 111-107. The Cavs went cold from the floor and Martin scored two straight buckets, the second on a layup after Kyle Lowry threw him a long, overhead pass.

Cleveland coach Byron Scott has been emphasizing defense, but the Cavs showed little resistance, allowing the Rockets to score 61 in the first half and 63 in the second.

"If you look at the stat sheet, offensively, we probably should have won," Scott said. "But if you give a team like that 22 offensive rebounds, you make it very tough on yourself. They were more physical and aggressive."

Battier isn't the only one sweating out the trade deadline. Houston's Courtney Lee, who had 16 points, was thought to be a target of the Chicago Bulls.

The Cavaliers have been busy working the phones to see if they can get better, but the club doesn't seem close to pulling off any major move. General manager Chris Grant would like to acquire young players or draft picks to help him rebuild.

The hours ahead will be tense for players, owners and executives.

"I think there will be relief for 99.9 percent of the league after tomorrow," Martin said.

NOTES: Hayes grabbed 12 rebounds in the first quarter, setting an arena record for rebounds in a quarter. ... The Cavs played without guards Mo Williams (ankle) and Daniel Gibson. Scott said Gibson was kept out because the team is "letting him deal with some personal things." ... Adelman wasn't surprised but was saddened to hear NBA Commissioner David Stern say the league can no longer help Sacramento with funding for a new arena. Adelman coached the Kings for eight seasons. "The arena needed to be built a long time ago," he said. "Something has to give. It's unfortunate." ... Scott claims to have over 100 suits, but you'll never see him wearing the same one during the season. He labels his dress clothes, so if he pulls out a suit that says "away," he'll wear it for one home game and then hang it up until the following season.

THE FACTS: Small forward Chase Budinger scored a career-high 30 points off the bench, propelling the Houston Rockets to a 124-119 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Shooting guard Kevin Martin also had 30 points for Houston, while power forward Chuck Hayes collected 12 points and a season-best 17 rebounds. The Rockets won the battle of the boards by a 57-37 margin.

QUOTABLE: "We knew they weren't a shot-blocking team, so we tried to attack the rim as much as possible. When [defenders] started coming over to help, we got a lot of good looks at the basket."

THE STAT: The Rockets grabbed 22 offensive rebounds, which they turned into 27 second-chance points. Hayes set Quicken Loans Arena records for offensive boards in a quarter (nine in the first) and a game (13) -- establishing a career high in the latter category. "Chuck was huge on the boards," Houston coach Rick Adelman said. "He got us so many second chances on the glass right from the start."

TURNING POINT: Budinger and Martin combined to score the Rockets' final 24 points over the last 7:41. Their two-man onslaught initially kept the Cavaliers from regaining the lead and eventually extended Houston's advantage to 10 points. "Chase pretty much saved us tonight," Hayes said. "He was great off the bench."

QUOTABLE II: "I was just trying to stay active and help out my team. When my man kept leaving me in the first half, I was able to freelance a lot and just go after the ball."

HOT: Budinger poured in 17 of his points in the second half as the Rockets outscored Cleveland 63-54. The University of Arizona product shot 5-for-9 from the floor, including 2-for-5 beyond the arc, and was 5-for-6 from the foul line after intermission. Budinger added a season-best tying eight rebounds.

NOT: Houston point guards Kyle Lowry and Aaron Brooks misfired on 17 of their 22 shots in exactly 48 combined minutes. Both players also were called for technical fouls in the fourth quarter and were savaged for 41 points and 17 assists by Cavaliers counterparts Ramon Sessions and Manny Harris.

GOOD MOVE: Cleveland coach Byron Scott removed starting center J.J. Hickson from the game for good with 3:51 left in the third. Hickson, who played very well going into the NBA All-Star break, was lethargic offensively with four points and a non-factor on the glass with three rebounds. "In the second half, I wasn't getting what I needed from him, so I went with the other guys," Scott said.

BAD MOVE: The Rockets allowed the Cavaliers to go 13-for-22 on 3-pointers, continually leaving their top shooters open on the perimeter. Anthony Parker made four treys, while Jamario Moon and Harris buried three apiece. "This was more of a wide-open game," Adelman said. "We just didn't defend in the first half. Fortunately, we scored a lot ourselves."

NOTABLE: Starting in place of the injured Mo Williams, Sessions had 20 points and a game-high 12 assists. He did, however, make a critical turnover in the final minute that led to a Martin fast-break dunk. ... Undrafted rookie Harris had 21 points, nine rebounds, five assists and one turnover in 26 strong minutes off the bench for Cleveland. ... The Cavaliers are 2-3 on their ongoing eight-game homestand. ... The Rockets improved to 29-28 all-time in Cleveland. ... The 243 combined points matched the Quicken Loans Arena record for a regulation game.
