Speculation about where Carmelo Anthony would end up has run rampant since the summer. For the Denver Nuggets, a season's worth of rumors have finally given way to reality.

A blockbuster deal has Anthony, Chauncey Billups and three others on their way to New York, likely leaving the Nuggets short-handed Tuesday night against the visiting Memphis Grizzlies as they begin life without their All-Star cornerstone.

Almost as soon as LeBron James decided to sign with the Miami Heat in July, the guessing game regarding Anthony's future employer began.

The Nuggets (32-25) put a three-year, $65 million extension on the table, but Anthony's refusal to commit kicked off a season-long soap opera, with New York emerging as his most desirable option. A four-team trade that would have sent him to New Jersey in the summer fell through, then the Nets pulled out of a three-team deal last month.

New Jersey again appeared in the running to land Anthony over All-Star weekend in Los Angeles, but the Brooklyn native will now be playing in New York. Late Monday night, the Nuggets reportedly struck a deal that will ship Anthony to the Knicks. Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and three draft picks will come to Denver.

Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman are also headed to New York, while the Knicks are set to acquire Corey Brewer from Minnesota for Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry.

The trade is expected to be finalized Tuesday, which almost certainly means the Nuggets will be without their new additions until Thursday's visit from Boston.

Coach George Karl expressed some sadness about the deal but added that it was "time to move on, reinvent." He said he'll particularly miss Billups.

"I'm 100 percent behind the decision we made, even though it will be dangerous and there won't be the veteran point guard back there," Karl added. "Felton, I thought was having a great season this year. But I think Ty (Lawson) and Felton are going to have a great challenge to live up to what Chauncey has given us in past years."

The deal with the Knicks could give Denver the pieces to still make a playoff run. The four players coming from New York average 53.4 points - 2.5 more than what the Nuggets' five outgoing players provided.

Denver is currently seventh in the Western Conference race, one-half game behind Portland and New Orleans but also just one game ahead of Utah and Memphis (31-26).

If the Nuggets drop out of a playoff spot, the Grizzlies could benefit. Memphis won four in a row and nine of 11 heading into the All-Star break to climb back into the picture.

"I like where we are right now," coach Lionel Hollins said after the Grizzlies' 102-91 win over Philadelphia last Tuesday. "... We just have to rev it back up when we come back."

Staying hot won't be easy with Rudy Gay on the shelf. Memphis' second-leading scorer at 19.8 points per game, Gay partially dislocated his left shoulder in the victory over the 76ers and will miss at least four weeks.

Gay had 23 points in the Grizzlies' 116-108 home victory over the Nuggets on Feb. 13.

The Pepsi Center has been a house of horrors for Memphis, which has won there just once. The Grizzlies have lost seven straight on the Nuggets' home floor - surrendering 115.3 points per game - and 24 of 25 overall in Denver dating to the team's days at the McNichols Sports Arena.

Nene, now the Nuggets' leading scorer at 15.0 points per game, has thrived versus Memphis. He has averaged 17.6 points - his most versus any opponent from the West - in nine games against the Grizzlies since 2008-09.

Depleted Nuggets roll past Grizzlies 120-107

DENVER (AP) For one night, the Denver Nuggets didn't need Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups or any of their new acquisitions.

What they had left was plenty.

J.R. Smith's 26 points helped short-handed Denver beat the Memphis Grizzlies 120-107 on Tuesday, hours after the Nuggets finalized a blockbuster deal that sent Anthony and Billups to the New York Knicks.

The Nuggets had only nine players on the bench following the three-team trade, and two of them fouled out. Another, Melvin Ely, didn't even play.

"Our guys, when their backs are confronted with a difficult situation, they usually play at a high level," coach George Karl said. "We always react to tough situations in a very positive way."

In a 13-player swap that also involved Minnesota, the Knicks picked up Anthony along with Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman.

But New York had to pay a steep price, sending Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and a 2014 first-round draft pick to the Nuggets, who get additional picks and cash. Denver also acquired center Kosta Koufos from the Timberwolves.

The former Knicks arrived at the Pepsi Center in the second quarter and received a rousing ovation from the sparse crowd after watching their new teammates pick apart the Grizzlies.

"They played great tonight, played hard," Chandler said as he settled into his new swivel chair inside the Nuggets locker room. "They have a lot of good players here. I'm happy to be here and hopefully we can get started on a good note."

The Nuggets certainly did Tuesday, coming out with an early intensity and jumping out to a 24-point lead in the first half.

They never glanced back.

"It's good we got off to this kind of start," Arron Afflalo said. "Change is not easy to accept. It's going to take time."

No Anthony meant more shots to go around for everyone, especially Smith, who's never been bashful to pull up and take a jumper. He finished 9 of 22 as he stepped into Anthony's starting spot.

Tony Allen had 26 points and O.J. Mayo added 21 for the Grizzlies, whose four-game winning streak was halted.

"We didn't play with a lot of desire, a lot of purpose," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "I didn't care how the Nuggets came out, I was worried about how we came out, and we came out (bad). We turned the ball over multiple times, we took quick shots, we didn't guard, they just drove us off the dribble all night.

"The Nuggets are a good team, by the way, and they've been a good team. We're trying to get there."

In a pregame news conference, team president Josh Kroenke went out of his way to express remorse that the trade had to include Billups, a hometown favorite.

"He is Denver basketball," Kroenke said.

But speedy Ty Lawson efficiently ran the team in place of Billups, scoring 21 points and dishing out seven assists.

"It felt like there was a lot more flow on the court," Lawson said. "It felt good out there."

Karl relished the thought of coaching a depleted squad, pondering different moves and scoring options all day.

"I've been told by a lot of owners that I coach better when I have a shorter bench," he said. "I think everybody knows I enjoy these type of games where you have to mix and match some situations and circumstances and find some success."

With the Nuggets comfortably up, a chorus of "Who needs 'Melo?" began to ring through the crowd.

There will be other nights when they miss his mid-range jumper and his 25 points a game, though.

"We lost a superstar and superstars are hard to find in this league," general manager Masai Ujiri said. "Chauncey and 'Melo were the ultimate - they brought smiles and excitement and greatness to this basketball organization.

"Do I feel there's a future here? Absolutely. I feel very confident that things will work out and people will love watching these young kids play basketball here."

The Nuggets have 24 more games to reassemble the pieces in an effort to make the playoffs for an eighth straight season. The team entered the night in seventh place in the Western Conference, just ahead of Memphis and Utah.

With the rumors picking up intensity over the last few weeks, the Nuggets appeared to be a distracted bunch, dropping four of six before the All-Star break.

Now, the drama is gone and the pressure has been turned down.

"I'm just happy it's over with. Period. We won't have to answer these questions no more," said Al Harrington, who fouled out after scoring seven points. "I hope this is the last time I'm going to have to answer any trade questions for a long time."

Notes: The Grizzlies signed G/F Rodney Carney to a 10-day contract. ... F Rudy Gay (shoulder) will be sidelined for about four weeks. ... The Nuggets beat Memphis for an eighth straight time at home.

THE FACTS: J.R. Smith scored 26 points and the shorthanded Denver Nuggets beat the Memphis Grizzlies 120-107 on Tuesday in their first game since trading Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to New York in a 13-player deal.

QUOTABLE: "It's tough. When you've had a hometown guy and Melo being here anchoring this team for seven, eight years, change is not easy to accept or see past. It's going to take time. Melo's held down this city for long time. It's good we got off to this kind of start.

THE STAT: Despite losing 41.7 points a game with the departure of their top two scorers the Nuggets hit the 120-point mark for the ninth time this season.

TURNING POINT: The Nuggets led by 10 midway through the second quarter when they went on a 14-0 run over the next 3:05 to go up 58-34. Memphis never got closer than 15 until the final seconds of the game.

QUOTABLE II: "It's been pretty nuts, getting lots of phone calls, hearing all the rumors, I'm just glad all the mess is over. It was a whole bunch of nonsense for the last month dealing with that in New York, I'm glad that craziness is out of the way.

HOT: Ty Lawson showed, for one night, he was ready for the burden of quarterbacking the Nuggets. The second-year player scored 21 points, dished out seven assists and had six steals to pace the Nuggets.

NOT: The Grizzlies' defense was porous all night. Denver hit 10 of its first 15 shots and drove through the lane for easy baskets the whole game.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Afflalo put up good numbers with Anthony getting most of the touches, and now he's poised to do even more. He had 21 on a very efficient 7-for-12 shooting night.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Before the game Nuggets president Josh Kroenke and general manager Masai Ujiri talked about reluctantly including hometown hero Billups in the deal with New York. "We tried every way not to include him in this trade. This is one of the most difficult things," Kroenke said. "When we came to the realization to maximize our return we had to make the deal bigger. That's when we realized it could be Chauncey. I didn't sleep for a couple of days."

GOOD MOVE: George Karl showed again that he can do much with little, using a nine-player roster to build a 27-point lead and win easily.

BAD MOVE: The Grizzlies had trouble handling the ball against the Nuggets, committing 21 turnovers through the first three quarters, which led to 25 points for Denver.

ROOKIE WATCH: Gary Forbes spent a good portion of this season as a spectator but was pressed into service with a shorthanded backcourt. He scored 10 points in 22 minutes.

NOTABLE: The crowd gave a standing ovation when the three players Denver got from New York, Felton, Danilo Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov, arrived at the arena in the second half.
