Celtics-Warriors Preview

The Boston Celtics have won an NBA title and more regular-season games than any other team since Kevin Garnett arrived in 2007-08.

There's one place they haven't enjoyed any success.

Oracle Arena is the only visiting venue where the Celtics have failed to win since Garnett's arrival, a six-game drought they'll try to end Tuesday night as they open a four-game road trip against the improving Golden State Warriors.

Boston (40-14) has won 218 games over the past 3 1/2 seasons, riding the league's top defense to two NBA finals appearances and the 2007-08 championship.

Golden State (26-29) has averaged the second-most points in that span, and while it's been held to 96.0 points per game in losing all three trips to TD Garden, the Celtics haven't done so well defensively in Oakland. The Warriors have averaged 107.0 points in three victories over Boston at Oracle Arena, stretching their home winning streak in the series to six with a 103-99 win on Dec. 28, 2009, behind 37 points from Monta Ellis.

Perhaps more impressively, Golden State has rallied from at least 12 down in each of the home wins with Garnett anchoring the Celtics' defense.

Ellis missed out on making the Western Conference All-Star squad, but with Garnett, Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce in the East lineup, the Celtics were well-represented.

Pierce - who missed last season's game in his hometown of Oakland with a knee injury - turned in an All-Star performance in Boston's final game before the break. After scoring one point and missing all 10 field-goal attempts in a win over Miami on Feb. 13, Pierce bounced back Wednesday with 31 points in a 94-80 victory over New Jersey.

"He's back, because he's a great player and those guys just don't have a lot of back-to-back bad games," coach Doc Rivers said of Pierce. "He was terrific."

Tuesday's game will be the last the Celtics play prior to Thursday afternoon's trade deadline, and Boston could be in the market for a player that would fit seamlessly with a defense that allows a league-low 91.1 points per game. The Celtics and Rockets have reportedly discussed a deal that would land Shane Battier with the East's defending champion.

A much-improved defense has certainly given the Warriors a boost recently. After allowing an average of 107.0 points through 46 games, Golden State has surrendered 97.6 points over its last nine.

It's an impressive 7-2 in that stretch, including three straight wins heading into the break. Ellis scored 35 points in Wednesday's 107-100 victory at Utah, the Warriors' sixth since Jan. 30 against an opponent with a winning record.

"This is a big step for us," coach Keith Smart said. "Knowing that this team was desperate, they had to try and get a win and our guys fought through it."

The Warriors improved to 15-2 when they hold their opponent to 100 points or fewer, but getting a big contribution from Ellis is still critical. Golden State is 16-5 when Ellis scores 27 or more.

Rondo will be at least partly in charge of slowing Ellis down, but the NBA assist leader has had some huge offensive games against the Warriors. Rondo has averaged 20.3 points versus Golden State since 2008-09, easily his most against any opponent.

Allen's 26.9 points per game in Oakland since 2004-05 are his most in any road venue.

Celtics stay hot, beat Warriors 115-93

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) So much for an All-Star hangover.

Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo each came close to a triple-double, and the Boston Celtics picked up right where they left off before the break with an easy 115-93 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night.

"You lose the first game, you kind of lose your momentum and then you're battling uphill," said Celtics forward Paul Pierce, who added 23 points. "So it's kind of good to get that first one and keep that momentum."

No problem there.

Garnett had 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, and Rondo had 19 points, 15 assists and six rebounds to help the Celtics hold off Miami for now and stay atop the Eastern Conference standings. They also snapped a six-game losing streak at Golden State, where they hadn't won since Dec. 29, 2003.

"I tried to be everywhere. I tried to fill every category in the book that's positive," Garnett said.

Boston's biggest strides perhaps came on defense.

Dorell Wright scored 19 points and Stephen Curry had 18 for the usually high-scoring Warriors, who had won seven of their last nine before the break and appeared to be building some momentum. Instead, they fell apart in the fourth quarter and couldn't recover against one of the NBA's elite.

"They're the Boston Celtics. They just turned it up," Warriors coach Keith Smart said.

There was no sign that Boston had any lingering effects from a busy All-Star weekend.

The Celtics had a record-tying four players in the NBA showcase along with Doc Rivers and his coaching staff on the sideline for the East stars. They got big nights from all four, including Ray Allen's 18 points.

Even with strong performances from the Big Four, the Celtics were still locked in a tight game for most of the first three quarters. They pulled away at the end of the third with that strong, physical defense that has been their staple.

Nate Robinson's dunk and Rondo's 3-pointer at the end of the third period gave Boston an 88-78 lead. The Warriors trimmed the deficit to four early in the fourth before the Celtics again took hold, going ahead by 18 points on a run that was highlighted by Pierce's fast-break dunk on a bounce pass from Rondo that split two defenders.

About the only downside for Boston was that center Kendrick Perkins left in the second half with a bruised left knee and did not return. Perkins said his knee just felt strained and doesn't expect to miss much, if any, time.

The injury did not appear serious, although with centers Shaquille O'Neal (sore right leg) and Jermaine O'Neal (sore left knee) already sidelined, any injury to the frontcourt could be a major setback.

Not that these Celtics have fallen into any traps this season.

They went ahead by nine points early, which was erased in a little more than a minute by another player who participated in All-Star festivities - even if it wasn't for the main event. Wright, who was in the 3-point contest, scored 10 straight points between the first and second quarters to give the Warriors a 32-31 lead.

Golden State went ahead by eight in the second quarter while Boston played its thin second unit. The Celtics' starters returned to help tie the score at 60 at halftime and easily pull away when it counted.

"When they made their run, we kind of sunk our heads a bit," Curry said. "We didn't have the composure down the stretch to make plays."

Notes: Rivers said he thought the Knicks and Nuggets both made out well in the trade that sent Carmelo Anthony from Denver to New York. He also was asked if he liked that the Atlantic Division, which Boston has dominated in recent years, seems to be improving overall. "I kind of liked it the way we had it. I thought it was very comfortable and pleasant," Rivers said, chuckling. ... The Warriors held a moment of silence before the game for longtime team physician and director of medicine, Dr. Robert Albo, who died Monday at 78. He served the Warriors for more than 40 years. ... After missing most of the season with a broken right wrist, Celtics reserve G Delonte West went scoreless in 12 minutes in his return from a hand injury. He was 0 for 4 shooting. ... Rondo also turned 25 on Tuesday. The team celebrated his birthday with a cake from a San Francisco bakery in the locker room after the game.

THE FACTS: Rajon Rondo scored 19 points and added 15 assists as the Boston Celtics applied a second-half throttling to the Golden State Warriors offense, keying a 115-93 victory Tuesday that ended the Celtics' six-year losing streak in Oakland. Kevin Garnett led all scorers with 24 points and made a run at triple-double status with 12 rebounds and six assists. The Warriors, who had 60 points at the half, shot just 30.8 percent after the break, missing 10 of 12 3-pointers.

QUOTABLE: "We told him before the game, 'Early and often, we're going to you every single time we can.' We thought that was an advantage for us. Our guys, they were yelling at him, they kept telling him to shoot. You know Kevin, if he take two (shots) in a row, he'll pass the next three times, so they just kept saying, 'Keep going.'"

THE STAT: The Warriors were held to just four assists in the second half, after recording 14 in a high-octane first half that ended in a 60-60 tie. Boston's defense smothered not only Warriors star Monta Ellis (3-for-12 after intermission) but also Golden State's bench, which went a combined 0-for-11 in the third and fourth quarters.

TURNING POINT: The Warriors' bench, which had turned in some fine performances during Golden State's 7-2 run leading into the All-Star break, fell apart under the weight of Boston's fourth-quarter defense. With Stephen Curry and four reserves -- Acie Law, Vladimir Radmanovic, Ekpe Udoh and Reggie Williams -- on the floor, Rondo keyed an 8-0 blitz with two assists and a layup, turning a four-point Boston lead at the 9:05 mark into a 12-point gap with 7 minutes left. Warriors coach Keith Smart brought his other four starters on at that point, but it was far too late.

HOT: Boston forward Paul Pierce, who went into the break on a 4-for-27 (14.8 percent) skid from behind the 3-point arc in his last seven games, rebounded with a 3-for-5 night Tuesday. Pierce went 9-for-13 overall en route to 23 points.

NOT: Warriors guard Monta Ellis continued his one-game-on, one-game-off run that has marked his February to this point. After a 35-point night against Utah -- with 16-for-25 shooting -- Ellis went 6-for-18 while being pestered by a combination of Rondo and Delonte West, returning from a broken wrist to make his first appearance since Nov. 24.

QUOTABLE II: "It was his birthday, so, he knew it. I thought Rondo, leadership-wise, throughout the game, he was getting on guys. I just thought that he was a coach on the floor tonight. He was terrific."

INSIDE THE ARENA: After Boston opened up a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter, Warrior fans streamed to the exits, and the remaining crowd members -- many clad in kelly green -- took up a "Let's go, Celtics" chant which had to embarrass the home team.

ROOKIE WATCH: Warriors big man Ekpe Udoh, a budding defensive star, was taken to school by the bulk of Boston's Glen Davis. Davis had 12 points and 10 rebounds while simply overpowering the lanky Udoh.

NOTABLE: The Warriors did not use forward Brandan Wright and center Dan Gadzuric, who were both suited up but reportedly set to be traded to New Jersey in exchange for big man Troy Murphy and a second-round draft pick. If that deal happens, Murphy -- who spent his first 5 1/2 seasons with the Warriors -- is widely expected to be bought out by Golden State. Wright and Gadzuric represent the majority of Golden State's $17 million worth of expiring deals, which the team has been trying desperately to turn into something more worthwhile. But general manager Larry Riley found the glut of expirings on the market depressed demand, so this may be their Plan C. ... The Celtics, already missing injured bigs Shaquille and Jermaine O'Neal, lost another one when starting center Kendrick Perkins went out early in the third quarter with a bruised left knee and did not return. Rivers said that athletic trainer Eddie Lacerte "thought it was a bruise, and that's what we're hoping it is." There was no word on Perkins' availability for Thursday in Denver. ... Celtics center Semih Erden returned after a four-game absence with a right abductor strain and provided four assists. ... A few of the Warriors, most notably Andris Biedrins, came back with a deep tan after the All-Star break, causing coach Smart to crack: "We did get a couple of new players -- in skin tone, anyways."
