MIAMI (AP) When Miami visits Boston on Sunday, it'll be trying to stay atop the Eastern Conference and extend the NBA's longest current winning streak.

And those will be Miami's secondary goals.

To the Heat, what matters most is finding a way to finally beat the reigning East champions. Miami is 0-2 against Boston this season and lost to the Celtics in the first round of last year's playoffs in a largely one-sided series. After that, Boston ousted LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers as well.

"We just want to see where we're at," Heat guard Dwyane Wade said. "It's not as big as everyone seems to be making it. But it's not another regular-season game."

No, it isn't - not with these stakes.

A Boston win would ensure the Celtics clinch the season-series - and any potential tiebreakers - with Miami, plus move them back on top of the East standings. Miami moved into the East lead on Friday night by winning in Detroit, improving to 39-14 and a half-game clear of the Celtics.

Another win would mean Miami needs only to beat Indiana on Tuesday or Toronto on Wednesday to head into the All-Star break with the East's best mark.

"We're still trying to get better every day," said James, the two-time reigning NBA MVP who is averaging 26.2 points in his first season with the Heat. "We're taking every practice and every regular-season game like it is the playoffs because we can't afford to lose an opportunity to get better."

The teams haven't met since Nov. 11. Boston won 88-80 at home in the NBA season-opener Oct. 26, then prevailed 112-107 in Miami about two weeks later.

"Now we're sitting on top of the East, going into a hostile place where we did not play well the first game of the year," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We respect who the Boston Celtics are and what they've proven the last 3 1/2 years. So this is what everybody, the fans, the media and everybody out there, this is what they want."

The last time Miami led the East was in the second week of January, and as soon as the Heat reached the top spot, they plummeted. Miami lost four straight, Boston simultaneously won five in a row, and the gap between the two was sizable once again.

It's disappeared rather quickly. Miami brings an eight-game win streak into Sunday, while the Celtics suddenly look vulnerable after losing four of their last seven.

"I don't think they care about that," Spoelstra said. "They have confidence in what they've done. They've proven themselves. I'm sure if they're sitting over there, they feel like they have enough to beat us."

Earlier this season, that was clear.

But after dealing with a slew of early growing pains, the Heat say the team they are now doesn't even compare to the one that faced Boston months ago.

Miami started 9-8, a predictably rocky - though bumpier than some expected - start after finding the best way to have Wade, James, Chris Bosh and a slew of other new faces on the roster together. Two of those eight losses came against the Celtics.

"It took us a little time," Wade said. "And now we're very comfortable in late games and we feel like we should win if the game is close. It's not always going to go that way, but we have that mentality."

Since then, the Heat have posted the NBA's best record, winning 30 of their last 36 games. And in four of those six losses, Miami was without either Bosh, Wade or James because of injury.

Each of Miami's "Big 3" will be in the lineup on Sunday.

"It's going to be a hostile environment," James said. "It's going to be a great game. It's two teams that have the same aspirations, and that's to win the NBA championship. They're the defending Eastern Conference champions and you've got to kind of go through them to get what you want."

Rondo's triple-double helps Celtics top Heat 85-82

BOSTON (AP) LeBron James and the Miami Heat couldn't win in Boston in the regular season. And now they might have to do it in the playoffs.

Rajon Rondo had a triple-double, and James missed a crucial free throw with 12.5 seconds left in the Celtics' 85-82 victory over Miami on Sunday. Boston improved to 3-0 against the Heat this season, taking back the top spot in the East and clinching the potential tiebreaker for home-court advantage in the playoffs.

The teams will play again in Miami on April 10.

"They are the defending Eastern Conference champions. You have to go through them, and they ain't going to make it easy," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We understand that this isn't going to be an easy ride for us, and that's where we're at our best."

The Heat eliminated most of a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and trailed 83-81 with 19 seconds left when they brought the ball in from a timeout and got it to James at the top of the key. He drove on Paul Pierce and drew the foul but missed the first shot, then made the second.

On the ensuing inbound pass, James went into the stands for the ball but merely knocked it to Ray Allen; the Celtics got the ball downcourt to Glen "Big Baby" Davis, who was fouled. Davis hit both foul shots with 6.3 seconds to go, and Mike Miller missed a 3-point attempt in the final seconds that would have sent the game to overtime.

"They're going to be a different team in March and April, the more important months, when we'll probably have to see them again," said Paul Pierce, who was 0-for-10 from the floor and scored just one point. "It gives us the series in case something happens with a tiebreaker."

The Celtics have won 12 of the last 13 games against Miami, including a 4-1 series victory in the first round of last year's playoffs; they then knocked James and the Cleveland Cavaliers out in the next round. James fled to Miami to join Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, but the Heat still haven't been able to beat Boston.

"This is classic, typical bigger brothers," Wade said. "You've got to get over the hump. We're getting closer and closer, but we're not there yet. It can happen at any time. It can happen in the playoffs."

Bosh scored 24 with 10 rebounds and James had 22 points for Miami, which had won eight in a row.

Kevin Garnett scored 19 with seven rebounds and Kendrick Perkins had a season-high 15 points for Boston, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Rondo had 11 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds while bothering James enough to force him into four first-half turnovers.

"I thought Rondo just willed us the game," coach Doc Rivers said. "Rondo just took it upon himself that whoever was bringing the ball up he was going to guard and harass. And I thought that changed the game for us."

Pierce had his lowest scoring total since 1999. He said afterward he was bothered by hand and foot injuries and would have an MRI on his left foot Monday.

Miami took a 43-39 lead into halftime, but Boston scored 12 of the first 13 points in the third quarter and opened a seven-point lead on Allen's 3-pointer with 8:31 left. After Wade drove for a layup, Allen hit a 15-footer and Wade was called for a flagrant foul for elbowing Garnett while fighting for position.

While the referees discussed it, the Heat gathered on the court and Rondo lingered outside their huddle until James pushed him away. Allen intervened to pull Rondo away.

Garnett made both free throws, giving the Celtics a 59-46 lead. In all, Boston outscored the Heat 20-3 in the first 5:17 of the third quarter, hitting its first seven shots.

"We definitely dug ourselves a hole," James said. "We can't expect to come into Boston and turn the ball over 12 times in the first half. We also can't afford to come in in the third quarter and not have our motor going and let them go on a 20-3 run to start the quarter. I feel 10 times out of 10 you're going to lose those games."

NOTES: Davis could only chuckle after taking the ball on the breakaway but leaving his dunk on the front of the rim. He then turned around and ran over Bosh for a foul. ... Allen was presented with the game ball from Thursday night, when he set the NBA's career 3-point record. Allen had two more 3s on Sunday to give him 2,564 in his career, four more than Reggie Miller. ... Pierce was 0-for-5 from 3-point range. He made one of two free throws. ... Boston has not lost three straight games all season.

Celtics-Heat notebook

THE FACTS: Rajon Rondo had a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Boston Celtics held off a late charge by the Miami Heat for a 85-82 win. Miami clawed all the way back from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but Mike Miller missed an open three-pointer with three seconds remaining. Kevin Garnett led six Boston players in double figures with 19 points, while Chris Bosh led all scorers with 24 points. LeBron James chipped in with 22 points as well for the Heat, but missed a crucial opportunity to tie the game when he bricked the first of his two free throws with 20 seconds remaining. With the victory, Boston has regained the top spot in the Eastern Conference, while snapping the Heat's eight-game winning streak.

QUOTABLE: "You can downplay it all you want, but this was a big game for us"

THE STAT: Boston hit 10 of their 12 shots during their 35-point third quarter. That point total was just four fewer than their entire first half output.

TURNING POINT: After struggling through a sloppy first half, the Celtics asserted themselves during the first six minutes of the third quarter. Boston dominated play on both ends of the floor with a 20-3 run, highlighted by the stellar effort of Rondo who had nine points, four rebounds, and three assists in the frame.

QUOTABLE II: "This is typical big brother stuff, and you got to get over it. I've been through it before; LeBron's been through it before with the Pistons....You've got to get over the hump and we're getting close, so we continue to learn from it."

HOT: Bosh --The power forward hit all four of his shots in the first half, and finished 8-of-11 from the field on his way to 24 points. The former Raptors also had a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds on the afternoon.

NOT: Paul Pierce appeared to be limited by the flu bug as he battled through his worst offensive outing of the season. The Celtics' captain scored a season low one point, and missed all ten of his shots from the field.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: It was the third triple-double of the year for Rondo, who led the Celtics in rebounding with 10 boards. The All-Star point guard continues to lead the league in assists with 12.3 per game.

NOTABLE: The Celtics honored Ray Allen before the game for setting a new record Thursday for most made three-pointers in NBA history. Dwyane Wade was whistled for a flagrant (one) foul after shoving Garnett in the third quarter. Wade also turned his ankle, landing awkwardly while contesting a Pierce three-point attempt in the third quarter. He remained in the game. Nate Robinson played just four minutes with a bruised right knee and did not see action in the second half. Boston got a major spark off the bench from Von Wafer and Glen Davis who combined for 26 points. In comparison, the Heat just got eight points from their second unit on 2-of-12 shooting. The Celtics scored just 11 points in the fourth quarter. Miami had 12 of their 15 turnovers in the first half. Boston tallied 15 fast break points.
