Spurs-Wizards Preview

After snapping their longest losing streak of the season, the Washington Wizards have a chance to end a skid against the San Antonio Spurs that's lasted more than five years.

The Wizards try to avoid an 11th straight loss to the Spurs when the teams meet Saturday night in the nation's capital.

Six players scored in double figures for Washington (14-37) as its eight-game losing streak came to an end with a 100-85 home win over Milwaukee on Wednesday night.

"What happens is, you keep on saying 'hey, we're getting better' but sometimes you gotta have a win to show it," said coach Flip Saunders, whose club now has a chance to win consecutive games for only the second time this season. "That's something that is optical that you can see. Players need to get those and I thats something they can build (on)."

Nick Young scored 26 points in Wednesday's win, while JaVale McGee had 16 points and 17 rebounds. The Wizards, who remain the only winless road team in the league, improved to 14-12 on their home court.

"We've gotta worry about San Antonio, because they're the team thats here," Saunders said. "We've played against good teams pretty well at home and we'd like to get a signature win at home against a very good team - best team in the league."

Saunders' club is all too familiar with how good the Spurs are. The Wizards have averaged 82.8 points during their 10-game losing streak in this series. They haven't defeated San Antonio since a 110-95 home victory Nov. 12, 2005.

It's possible Washington may be without Rashard Lewis, averaging 18.1 points in his last seven games against the Spurs. Dealing with tendinitis in his right knee, Lewis managed three points Wednesday and is uncertain for this contest.

San Antonio (44-9) boasts a strong defense and the league's best record, but had a terrible time scoring Friday night in a 77-71 loss at Philadelphia. The Spurs, who had their four-game winning streak snapped, shot a season-worst 33.3 percent from the floor - including a 3-of-17 effort from 3-point range - en route to their lowest scoring output since a 90-64 loss at Utah on April 4, 2008.

"I think it set offensive basketball back a decade or so," coach Gregg Popovich said as his team fell to 4-2 on its current nine-game "Rodeo Road Trip".

Manu Ginobili had eight points while shooting 2 of 10 from the floor, and Tony Parker finished with nine points.

While his teammates couldn't get anything going, Tim Duncan recorded his 19th double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds. It was the Spurs' first loss of the season in a game where Duncan had a double-double.

The 13-time All Star had only five points when these teams met in San Antonio on Dec. 26, but the Spurs won 94-80. Young also had a tough night for Washington, finishing with 10 points on 5-of-19 shooting.

Parker sparks Spurs in rout of Wizards

WASHINGTON (AP) One day after their worst offensive performance of the season, the San Antonio Spurs came back with one of their best.

Tony Parker scored 10 of his 18 points in less than 2 minutes during the first quarter to jump-start San Antonio to a 118-94 rout of the Washington Wizards on Saturday night.

After losing 77-71 at Philadelphia Friday - the Spurs' lowest point total of the season - San Antonio bettered that scoring output before halftime.

"You know, sometimes I don't even try to understand basketball," Parker said. "It's weird."

Parker's 10-point run came entirely on fast breaks, including three steals he converted into layups. It was part of a 12-0 run that gave San Antonio a 16-point lead, and the Spurs never looked back.

San Antonio shot better than 60 percent from the field for most of the game, and even though the accuracy suffered a bit late in garbage time, the Spurs finished with a mark of 58.4 percent, including 13 of 25 from 3-point range. They led by as many as 41 points and every available San Antonio player had scored midway through the third quarter.

"It's just one of those games," Parker said. "Coming back from a tough game last night, we didn't shoot the ball well, tonight everything was going in."

George Hill scored 18 points and was 4 for 4 on 3-pointers for San Antonio, which has won 10 consecutive games against the Wizards, including five straight in Washington. Gary Neal added 16 points as six Spurs finished in double digits.

"The simple thing is we made shots tonight that we didn't make last night," Hill said after the game.

The Spurs led 37-18 after the first quarter and 72-45 after the first half. The 72 points were the most San Antonio has scored in any half this season, and tied the most allowed in a first half by Washington.

"Words can't totally explain how I feel. Disappointed. Embarrassed," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said. "I didn't see this coming. I don't think anyone saw it coming."

The Spurs are in the midst of a nine-game road trip as a rodeo takes over their AT&T Center home. The game at Washington was San Antonio's fourth in five nights and the Spurs' early lead gave them a chance to rest their starters most of the second half.

Tim Duncan scored six points in 12 minutes, the fewest he's played in a game since Dec. 2, 2007. For the first time this season, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich made a change to the starting lineup as Hill replaced Manu Ginobili to allow Ginobili extra time off - Ginobili scored six points in 8 minutes.

"It's huge for us," Ginobili said. "We earned ourselves the possibility to rest a little bit, and it's well-needed."

Cartier Martin and Andray Blatche each scored 16 points to lead Washington.

After losing to the team with the NBA's best record, the Wizards now head to Cleveland for a game Sunday matching teams setting marks for futility this season. Washington has an 0-25 road record and is looking for its first win away from home against the Cavaliers, who recently snapped an NBA-record 26-game losing streak.

"You're as good as your last performance. Right now, we're not very good," Saunders said. "We've got to get a lot better to compete with anybody in the NBA."

Notes: Spurs F Tiago Splitter missed his second straight game with a strained left hamstring. ... The Wizards had three forwards out due to injury, including Rashard Lewis (sore right knee). Al Thornton (dislocated right middle finger) missed his second straight game. Josh Howard (sore left knee), who has not played since Jan. 5, was originally slated to return against the Spurs but should play Sunday at Cleveland, Saunders said. ... It was Washington's third sellout of the season, drawing a crowd of 20,435.

THE FACTS: Tony Parker and George Hill each scored 18 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to an easy 118-94 win over the Washington Wizards on Saturday. A night after losing badly in Philadelphia, the Spurs quickly established control and scored 72 by halftime. San Antonio, which has an NBA-best 45-9 record, led by as many as 41 and had an easy time against Washington, which lost for the ninth time in 10 games. The Wizards, a frightful 0-25 on the road, try to break their skid in Cleveland on Sunday. They were led by Cartier Martin and Andray Blatche with 16.

THE STAT: On Friday, the Spurs were horrid, scoring just 71 against the Sixers. Against the Wizards, they had 72 points in the first half.

TURNING POINT: Parker scored 10 straight points and stole the ball three times as San Antonio went on a 12-0 run to open a 16-point lead barely eight minutes into the game.

QUOTABLE II: "Washington played tonight like we did last night...We had nothing last night."

HOT: Hill and Parker, San Antonio's starting backcourt, combined to shoot 12-for-17 from the field. Hill, starting for the first time all season, hit 4-for-5 from the 3-point line.

NOT: The Wizards' Nick Young was just 2-for-10 and had three fouls in the first half. He finished with four points. "It was one of those night. I was in the foul trouble early. It took me out of the flow of the game," Young said.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: While the Spurs were terrific, it wasn't a great night for those who have Tim Duncan. With San Antonio on cruise control, Duncan played just 12 minutes -- his fewest since Dec. 2, 2007 -- and had six points.

GOOD MOVE: Popovich inserting Hill into the starting lineup. He delivered with a hot night.

BAD MOVE: The Wizards showing up. From the early minutes, they looked sluggish and indifferent. "It didn't seem like anybody cared," John Wall said.

ROOKIE WATCH: Wall had eight points, seven assists and four turnovers. Trevor Booker had seven points and eight rebounds. Kevin Seraphin scored seven points, his high. Mustafa Shakur, signed to a second 10-day contract because Washington was missing Rashard Lewis (sore right knee), Josh Howard (sore left knee) and Al Thornton (dislocated right middle finger), had two points in six minutes.

Gary Neal, the Spurs' rookie guard from nearby Towson (Maryland) University, had 16 points in 30 minutes. Tiago Splitter missed his second straight game with a strained left hamstring.

INSIDE THE ARENA: It was the third sellout of the season for the Wizards -- 20,435, and remarkably they hardly booed the home team. "I feel bad from the fans' standpoint. There's 8:40 left in the game; we're down 36 -- and our fans are cheering for them to miss shots," Saunders said with admiration.

NOTABLE: About 30 minutes before the game, the Spurs announced that Hill would start in place of Manu Ginobili. It was the first time in 54 games San Antonio had changed its starting lineup. Ginobili played just eight minutes -- his fewest this season. "If you start [Ginobili], he's going to have more minutes," Popovich said. "We wanted to bring him off the bench, so if we did need him, he wouldn't have so many minutes."
