New Orleans denied the Orlando Magic their franchise-record 10th straight win last month, a milestone the Hornets themselves reached eight victories later.

Nothing has gone right since.

The short-handed Hornets have lost a season-high four straight and six of seven after the end of their double-digit winning streak, a skid they could have trouble ending Friday night as they visit a Magic team eager to avenge last month's overtime defeat.

Orlando (34-20) brought a nine-game winning streak into New Orleans on Jan. 12, and the Magic had momentum heading into overtime after rallying from a seven-point deficit with 1:36 remaining.

But Marcus Thornton scored seven of his 22 points in the extra five minutes to lift the Hornets (32-22) to a 92-89 victory, and they kept rolling from there. Eight more wins followed before New Orleans also blew a chance to set a franchise-record winning streak in a 102-96 loss at Sacramento on Jan. 29.

The Hornets' only win since came at home Feb. 1 against Washington, which is 0-25 on the road. They've lost their last four - missing Emeka Okafor (hip) and Trevor Ariza (ankle) for the past three - and their two latest efforts were particularly ugly.

New Orleans shot 41.7 percent in a 104-92 home loss to woeful Minnesota on Monday, then fell 103-101 in overtime at New Jersey on Wednesday, a defeat Chris Paul took personally.

"I don't care what anybody says about a bunch of different things happening over the course of the game," said Paul, who finished with nine points, 11 assists and seven turnovers. "I feel like this was my loss. The turnovers. The decision-making down the stretch. We have to impose our will."

Okafor's return date is up in the air while Ariza, who spent parts of three seasons with Magic, will likely miss two or three more games.

Coach Monty Williams' rotation is also in flux. Willie Green and Sasha Pavlovic - on a 10-day contract - started Wednesday, while Quincy Pondexter didn't play and Marco Belinelli came off the bench for the first time.

Thornton, averaging 7.6 points, went scoreless.

"Bottom line is we need to get more production from a lot of people and right now we are not," Williams said. "We're not getting a lot out of our bench."

Okafor and Ariza combined for 34 points and 18 rebounds last month against the Magic, who got little production from anyone besides Dwight Howard and Jason Richardson. Howard had 29 points and 20 rebounds while Richardson added 21 points, but the rest of the team shot 15 of 57 (26.3 percent).

Howard again led the way Wednesday in a 99-95 win at Philadelphia, but more impressive than his 30 points were how he got them. The big man hit 14 of 19 free throws after coming in as a 57.9 percent shooter from the line.

"I will maintain until I'm put in my grave that he's capable of being a 70-percent free throw shooter," coach Stan Van Gundy said of Howard, who went 3 of 7 from the line against the Hornets last month.

The sometimes pessimistic Van Gundy was effusive in praising his team's effort a night after a 101-85 victory against the Clippers.

"I think it was possibly our best win of the year," Van Gundy said. "On the road against a team that's been playing extremely well."

The Hornets, who allow the third-fewest points in the league at 92.5 per game, have surrendered 100 or more in seven of their last eight. They're 25-1 when allowing 93 points or fewer and 7-21 when giving up 94 or more.

Hornets snap 4-game skid with 99-93 win over Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) In the weeks since New Orleans finished a season-best 10-game winning streak last month, closing out games had become a burden for the slumping Hornets.

They excelled down the stretch Friday night, though, rallying for a much-needed 99-93 road win over the Orlando Magic.

Willie Green had 24 points and David West added 17 points and 17 rebounds for New Orleans, which snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Magic are 5-6 since their last three-game winning streak last month.

Chris Paul added 15 points, Jarrett Jack had 13 and Trevor Ariza 10 for the Hornets, who held an opponent under 100 points for the first time in four outings.

"This was very needed," Paul said. "After four losses in a row sometimes you forget what it's like to win. When we came out of that last timeout midway through the fourth quarter, I told the fellas: 'Let's win it. We've had enough close ones. Let's take this game.' And we did that."

The Magic erased a nine-point halftime deficit, but came up short down the stretch thanks to a slew of late turnovers. They had 16 for the game and six in the fourth quarter alone.

Dwight Howard led the way for Orlando with 20 points and 17 rebounds, and Hedo Turkoglu added 16 points. J.J. Redick and Earl Clark each scored 14 off the bench.

After playing some spotty defense in the first half, Orlando's offense came alive in the third quarter to tie it at 80 entering the fourth.

The Magic continued their momentum to start the final 12 minutes, using a 6-2 spurt, capped by a dunk by Howard to jump out to an 86-82 lead with 9:21 to play.

David Andersen and Hornets coach Monty Williams were both called for technicals at the 8:38 mark for arguing a foul call on Andersen as he battled Clark for a rebound. The Magic led 89-84 following a pair of free throws by Redick and one by Clark before the Hornets reeled off seven straight points to take a 91-89 lead with 6:51 left.

That lead remained one basket, 93-91, on a jumper by West and grew to 95-91 on a jumper by Green with 1:56 to play. Ryan Anderson misfired on a 3-pointer and the rebound was fumbled out of bounds. An official review of the play during a timeout gave the Magic the ball with 31.1 seconds to go, and Redick scored on a driving layup to make it 95-93.

West hit one of two free throws and the Magic called a timeout. But Turkoglu threw away the inbounds pass with 22.7 seconds to play to hand it back over to New Orleans. Paul was fouled and hit a pair of free throws, the Magic missed on their next trip and Paul hit two more from the line to provide the final margin.

The Magic scored just 13 points in the fourth quarter and only four after the Hornets' pair of technicals. Howard was also held to just four second-half points.

"It's just something we've been doing for a while now that's catching up with us," said Magic guard Gilbert Arenas, who had 10 points in 12 minutes. "The second quarter we're always starting out slow and then we try to pick it up in the second half. In the last 5 minutes we just couldn't turn it around. We got the stops we needed, we just couldn't score."

New Orleans took a 61-52 lead into halftime, posting its second-highest point total in a first half this season.

Jack and Green both had 13 points to lead the Hornets, followed by Paul with 12.

Orlando tied it at 46 with less than 5 minutes to play in the second quarter on a dunk by Clark. But the Hornets closed the quarter on a 15-6 run, which included eight points by Jack.

"Right now if you just look at the results, bottom line is that we can't beat a good team," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We've lost eight straight to teams that are over .500 right now and we haven't been able to play at the level we need to play, to play teams like that. ... It's going to have to change."

Howard had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Magic and Redick scored 10 points off the bench. Howard struggled from the foul line, though, shooting only 4 of 10. New Orleans seemed to recognize his woes in the final 2 minutes of the half, fouling Howard three times before the Magic got into the offensive half court.

The Hornets led 28-24 after the opening 12 minutes, though they were thoroughly dominated underneath. The Magic scored 18 points in the paint during the period, compared to six for New Orleans.

"It's a big win," Green said. "I thought collectively as a team, we went out and battled for 48 minutes. We just wanted those guys to take tough shots, run them off the (3-point) line and fortunately for us we were able to get stops down the stretch. ... I think that was the difference in the game."

NOTES: Paul was fined $15,000 by the NBA for verbal abuse of a referee during the Hornets' 103-101 overtime loss at New Jersey on Wednesday. ... Magic PF Brandon Bass, who has missed the past six games with a sprained left ankle, could be available for Orlando's game with the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. He participated in the team's offensive walkthrough Friday morning and got a promising report from team trainers.

THE FACTS: Willie Green scored a season-high 24 points and the New Orleans Hornets broke a four-game losing streak with a 99-93 victory over the Orlando Magic. David West had 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Hornets, who held the Magic to four points over the final 8:38 in completing a two-game sweep of Orlando. Green had a big first quarter, then hit a 3-pointer and a long turnaround jumper in the Hornets' game-closing 14-4 run. Dwight Howard led the Magic with 20 points (only two in the last 21 minutes) and 17 rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "Too bad we're not in the East."

THE STAT: The Magic shot 5-for-18 and missed all four of their 3-point shots in a 13-point fourth quarter. They also had six turnovers.

TURNING POINT: With 8:38 left and the Magic leading by two, technical fouls were called on the Hornets' David Anderson and coach Monty Williams. The free throws gave Orlando an 89-84 lead, but the rest of the game was all Hornets.

HOT: Green made three of the Hornets' first four baskets and shot 10-for-20, moslty from long range.

NOT: The Magic shot 5-for-21 from 3-point range, and they are a frigid 65-for-228 (.285) over the last nine games.

GOOD MOVE: Although they looked disastrous at the time, the technicals on Anderson and Williams sparked the Hornets.

QUOTABLE III: "We've been feeling like we don't get calls all year long because of me being a rookie coach ... One of my rules is not getting fourth-quarter techs, and that was kind of stupid at that point. But the game changed in our favor."

BAD MOVE: The Hornets did not put Howard on the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. It was the eighth time this season Howard has missed eight or more free throws in a game.

NOTABLE: Hornets forward Trevor Ariza played 40-plus minutes after missing three games with a sprained left ankle ... Emeka Okafor, a major factor in the Hornets' win over the Magic a month ago, was out with a strained oblique muscle . . . The Magic's last victory over a team currently holding a winning record was a 117-107 decision against a Dallas team playing without Dirk Nowitzki on Jan. 8 ... Earl Clark matched his career scoring high of 14 for Orlando.
