Considering the Los Angeles Clippers have more losses than anyone since moving to their current city 27 years ago, they are no strangers to being the NBA's laughingstock.

These days, the Cleveland Cavaliers have that title all to themselves.

In the midst of the longest losing streak in league history, the Cavaliers can set a major North American pro sports record with a 27th consecutive loss Friday night against Blake Griffin and the visiting Clippers.

Griffin has finally offered Los Angeles (20-32) some long-term hope, a rarity for a franchise that's averaged 53 losses a season since moving up the coast from San Diego in 1984-85.

That has come after the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft missed his first season with a stress fracture in his left knee, but the Clippers knew they'd get their young superstar back. That's not the case in Cleveland, where the Cavaliers (8-45) have dropped 36 of 37 since beginning their first season without LeBron James at 7-9.

Cleveland set an NBA mark for consecutive losses at 25 - breaking its own record from the early 1980s - by falling 99-96 at Dallas on Monday. It then tied the 1976-77 Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the longest skid in North American pro sports history with a 103-94 home defeat to Detroit on Wednesday.

Coach Byron Scott, mostly stoic throughout the ongoing woes, let his team have it after its latest listless effort.

"I'm mad as hell," Scott said. "I can deal with losing, especially when our guys play as hard as they have in the last couple weeks, but I find it very hard to deal with when guys don't come out ready to play."

The Cavaliers had stayed within seven points in their previous four losses, but trailed by nine after one quarter Wednesday.

"We had no sense of urgency whatsoever and that kind of amazes me," Scott said. "When we've lost as many in a row as we lost and when you've been as close as we've been in the last four or five games and to be at home and come out the way we came out - that amazes me."

The Clippers had lost four in a row overall and seven straight on the road heading into Wednesday's visit to New York.

Griffin had 21 points, which has rarely been enough to get Los Angeles a victory. However, the Clippers, who went 3-21 in the first 24 games Griffin failed to score 22 or more, got contributions from everyone at Madison Square Garden. Six players scored at least 16 points and Baron Davis added 16 assists in a 116-108 victory.

"I think we had one of our most, one of our best overall games, with everybody contributing and everybody playing extremely well," Griffin said.

Guard Eric Gordon and center Chris Kaman won't return prior to the All-Star break, but Los Angeles has found a decent fill-in for Gordon in Randy Foye. The former first-round pick has averaged 16.0 points as a starter since Gordon went down - he's averaging 7.5 on the season - and scored 17 of his season-high 24 in the fourth quarter Wednesday.

The Clippers have lost eight straight overall to the Cavaliers and eight in a row in Cleveland.

The Cavs are looking to get a boost from the return of point guard Mo Williams, who has been out since Jan. 15 with a hip injury. Williams will come off the bench Friday, though he averaged 13.6 points and 7.1 assists as a starter before getting hurt.

The End: Cavaliers stop losing streak at 26

CLEVELAND (AP) Daniel Gibson slipped an expensive gold chain over his head and touched its dangling diamond-studded medallion.

Looking up at the crush of cameras, he took a deep breath and exhaled.

"I can smile again," he beamed. "It feels pretty good. Winning is a precious feeling."

The losing streak - so long, so embarrassing, so hard to stop - is over.

Finally. Barely.

Nearly two months after it started innocently, the Cavaliers stopped their NBA-record skid at 26 games Friday night with a 126-119 win in overtime against the Los Angeles Clippers, who did all they could to extend Cleveland's winter misery.

The Cavs, who had become a national joke as the losses piled up, won for the first time since Dec. 18 and just the second time in 38 games. They had to go an extra five minutes to ensure they didn't set the mark for the longest skid in pro sports history.

They'll gladly settle with tying the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the worst streak among the four major sports.

It's one they didn't want to own, and they played like it.

"It's a great feeling and great for the morale of this team, this city and these fans," said Antawn Jamison, who matched a season high with 35 points. "It's finally good to get it. We've been working so hard for this. We finally got it."

Jamison made the game's biggest basket, a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left in OT for the Cavs, who may have gotten a favorable call at the end of regulation when J.J. Hickson blocked Baron Davis' potential game-winning layup in the final second.

The Clippers thought he goaltended.

"I can't say what I think about all those things," Los Angeles forward Blake Griffin said. "That was unbelievable. Throughout the whole game, it was just unbelievable. That was the worst home-court advantage I've ever seen. There's such a thing as home-court advantage, but that was unbelievable."

Gibson scored nine in overtime and Hickson, playing like a man possessed all night in a matchup with Griffin, added 27 points and 14 rebounds.

The Clippers made the Cavs (9-45) sweat out every second. Down by six, Los Angeles cut it to 120-119 on Randy Foye's 3 with 44 seconds left. But Jamison responded by popping outside on an inbounds play and draining his 3 from the left wing to revive the hopes of Cleveland fans, whose emotions soared and dropped by the minute.

After Foye's 3 rattled in and out with 14 seconds remaining, Gibson was fouled and Davis was ejected for arguing, later saying he didn't want to see the Cavs celebrate.

Gibson made the technical and dropped two more free throws to put the Cavs up by seven. When Los Angeles misfired on its last trip, Cavs forward Jamario Moon grabbed the loose ball and held it high as the clock ticked off the precious last seconds.

The final horn sounded, but was drowned out by Cleveland's fans as wine-and-gold streamers and confetti that had been sitting high above Quicken Loans Arena since a week before Christmas tumbled from the ceiling. Moments later, the anthemic "Cleveland Rocks" shook the building.

The Cavs savored the win by lingering on the floor before heading to the locker room, where they celebrated as if they had won a playoff game.

"They're in there jumping around and having a good time," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "I told them to enjoy it but let's not take a big breath and think OK we got a win, great. We have to think that we are supposed to win games."

Griffin had 32 points and 13 rebounds, Davis scored 26 and Foye had 23 for the Clippers.

The Cavs were energized by the return of Mo Williams, who had 17 points and 14 assists in his first game in nearly a month because of a hip injury.

"He gave us a huge lift," Gibson said. "All game long he kept saying, 'We ain't losing this game.' We all had that feeling."

Hickson, who had seven blocks, swatted away Davis' layup at the horn to end a frenetic, first 48 minutes and the teams went to overtime tied at 110. The Clippers screamed for goaltending, but it appeared Hickson got the ball just as it reached its peak and was about to hit the backboard.

Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro saw it differently.

"I thought it was goaltending," he said. "They (the officials) didn't think it was. They can't review it because it wasn't a call that was made. I'll have to look at the film. I couldn't see from that angle. It looked like it got on the glass, but I'm guessing."

A whistle there against Cleveland would have been loss No. 27 - and the cruelest one yet.

But this was the Cavs' night, a rare highlight in a nightmarish season that's a long way from being over.

"Gotta give it up," Davis said. "They played well. They won. For a team that lost 26 games in a row, they came out, they wanted to win and they played like it. I'm not saying we didn't. They made big plays at the end. We didn't."

Griffin damaged four padded courtside seats while diving for a loose ball in the opening seconds of the third quarter. Fortunately, the seats were unoccupied when the muscular 6-foot-10, 250-pound Griffin went flying headfirst after the ball. Otherwise, somebody would have been hurt.

When the unsuspecting fans came back with their beverages, they had to temporarily move until the seats were pulled and replaced.

Following a poor showing in a loss to Detroit on Wednesday, a "mad as hell" Scott blasted his players for their overall lack of energy amid a streak taking on a life of its own. He was amazed that they wouldn't be ready to play and challenged their pride.

They finally showed some.

"It's great," he said. "We finally got the monkey off our back. But I expect our guys to play this hard every single night. If we do that, we'll be OK."

Notes: The Clippers will travel 6,510 miles on their eight-game, 14-day trip. ... Like any NBA fan, Scott loves Griffin's game. "The guy is unbelievable," Scott said. "I've watched the Clippers play, and I would never watch the Clippers play. But I watch them and 99 percent of that is because of Blake Griffin. He's what you call a true power forward. No doubt about that." ... Williams was sad to see Utah coach Jerry Sloan resign following a reported clash with star guard Deron Williams. "Jerry should get all the credit he deserves for all the things he's done, all the players who came through, including myself," said the Cavs guard, who was drafted by Utah. "I have nothing but great memories of that organization, especially Jerry Sloan. I wish him the best."

THE FACTS: The Cleveland Cavaliers snapped their NBA-record losing streak at 26 games with a 126-119 overtime win over the Los Angeles Clippers. Cleveland's victory was its first since Dec. 18 and avoided breaking the North American pro sports record for consecutive losses, which it now shares with the 1976-1977 Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL.

QUOTABLE: "Go home and watch SportsCenter. They ain't going to be talking about us tonight."

THE STAT: Cleveland point guard Mo Williams, who had been out since Jan. 19 with a left hip injury, dished out nine assists in 11 first-half minutes to keep Los Angeles from extending an eight-point lead. Williams finished with 17 points and a game-high 14 assists in 31 minutes off the bench.

TURNING POINT: With less than one second left in regulation, Cavaliers center J.J. Hickson appeared to commit a goaltending violation on a short jumper by Los Angeles' Baron Davis. The officials, however, ruled Hickson's block legal and the teams headed to OT tied at 110-110.

HOT: Hickson amassed 27 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots while guarding Griffin throughout the evening. His best defensive work came in OT when he held the Clippers' phenom to one basket. "J.J. took the challenge we gave him," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said.

NOT: Los Angeles' post players were savaged by Hickson and Cavaliers power forward Antawn Jamison for a combined 62 points and 23 rebounds. Griffin countered with 32 points and 13 boards, but shot just 11-for-26 against a notoriously soft frontline.

GOOD MOVE: Scott refused to double-team Griffin over the final seven minutes, opting to have Hickson play him one-on-one after he picked up his fifth foul. He wanted to prevent the Clippers from getting open looks beyond the arc, which worked as they missed five of six 3-pointers during the timeframe.

BAD MOVE: Davis was ejected after committing a foul with 13 seconds left in OT, allowing the Cavaliers to ice the victory at the foul line. The volatile veteran spent the extra period chirping at anyone who would listen about Hickson's regulation-ending rejection, foreshadowing his second technical foul.

NOTABLE: Cleveland power forward Jamison scored his 18,000th career point. He joined Scottie Pippen and Dirk Nowitzki as the only players in NBA history with 18,000 points, 7,000 rebounds and 900 3-pointers. ... The Cavaliers have not won a regulation game since Nov. 27 against Memphis. ... The Clippers have lost nine straight games at Quicken Loans Arena. ... Griffin notched his 44th double-double of the season with 32 points and 13 rebounds.
