Gilbert Arenas is no longer a star in Orlando like he once was in Washington. That might not be a problem for the veteran guard.

Arenas and the visiting Magic try to hand the Wizards their seventh straight loss Friday night when the teams meet for the first time since the December trade that sent Arenas to Orlando.

The three-time All-Star was the subject of trade rumors most of the first month of the season. He seemed destined to leave Washington with knee and ankle injuries slowing him down and overall No. 1 pick John Wall the focal point of the team's rebuilding process.

The controversial Arenas likely wore out his welcome even before the regular season after he was suspended 50 games in 2009-10 for bringing a gun into Washington's locker room, then faked an injury to sit out a preseason game in October.

"I sensed something when I was coming off the bench," Arenas said. "The excuse was that they needed scoring off the bench."

Arenas, who averaged 25.0 points and 5.7 assists in just over seven injury-plagued seasons in Washington, is averaging 8.7 and 3.9 assists in 23 games off the bench for the Magic (31-19).

The 29-year-old looked at the move as an opportunity for a second chance and is only being asked to help solidify Orlando as an NBA title contender.

"This is a true new beginning," Arenas said when he was traded Dec. 18.

Arenas was not much of a factor with 10 points and four assists in 27 minutes of Orlando's 104-100 loss to Miami on Thursday. The Magic have lost two in a row and four of six.

"We need to do the things we need to do to get ourselves ready, individually and collectively," said Magic guard Jameer Nelson, who scored 22 points. "We shouldn't have to come out and talk about energy or intensity every night."

Despite their recent rough stretch, the Magic will try for a fifth consecutive victory over Washington (13-35).

Orlando has averaged 110.5 points and shot 52.9 percent its last four games against the Wizards, but needed a Dwight Howard putback with 4.3 seconds left to leave Washington with a 100-99 win Nov. 27.

Howard, who had 17 with 16 rebounds versus Miami, scored 32 in that contest and finished with 23 in a season-opening 112-83 victory over the Wizards on Oct. 28.

That defeat began Washington's road struggles.

Washington dropped to 0-25 away from home this season after it concluded a four-game trip with Tuesday's 97-89 loss at New Orleans.

The Wizards already lost seven straight overall Dec. 5-18.

"We're not giving in and we're not giving up," said Washington forward Andray Blatche, who scored 21 points Tuesday. "It's tough when you fight the whole game and you come up short."

Wall (14.7 ppg) was held to four points on 2-of-10 shooting Tuesday. He had 14 with nine assists in his NBA debut against the Magic, but missed the teams' November meeting because of a bruised right knee.

Washington swingman Nick Young, who scored 30 against New Orleans, has averaged 23.1 points the last 13 games.

The Wizards are 13-10 at home, but have dropped two of three there.

Howard's 22 points, 15 rebounds carry Magic

WASHINGTON (AP) On the night Gilbert Arenas returned to Washington, Dwight Howard was the star of the game.

When Arenas was traded to the Orlando Magic on Dec. 18 after a tumultuous seven-plus years with the Washington Wizards, fans didn't get a chance to say goodbye.

The hastily announced trade of the player known as "Agent Zero," came after multiple knee surgeries and a 50-game suspension for bringing guns into the Verizon Center locker room in December 2009.

Seven weeks later, Arenas sat in the other locker room, basking in the mostly warm reception he received in the Magic's 110-92 win over the Wizards on Friday night.

"I expected to get booed some, glad I got cheered. It just shows that people understand it was one year, one bad mistake, and it can't erase seven good years that I had here," Arenas said.

"All feelings change when you have growth and when you get older. I'm a year older, and a year wiser than I was last year."

He had 10 points, six rebounds and six assists in 25 minutes.

While the pregame attention was on Arenas, Howard led the Magic to the win with 22 points and 15 rebounds.

A night after playing all 48 minutes in a 104-100 loss to Miami, Howard made his first 10 field goals and didn't miss a shot until 2:20 remained in the third quarter. His two dunks and long jumper, helped the Magic go on a 9-0 run that gave Orlando a 70-62 lead with 3:01 left in the third.

Howard had help from Ryan Anderson, who had 10 of his 19 points in the first quarter, Jason Richardson with 18 points and J.J. Redick, who had 15 points - 12 in the fourth quarter as the Magic won going away.

"I'm glad that we got the lead and held it - and I didn't have to play the whole game," Howard said.

Howard is enjoying his new teammate, and thinks that he'll play better later in the season.

"He says he plays better in warmer months - and it's not warm yet," Howard said. "We're just trying to wait until some warm weather comes, and the sun is out and Gil can play his game because right now it's hard for him to play when it's cold outside."

Arenas checked in with 1:31 to play in the first quarter. In his first 90 seconds, Arenas stole the ball from Nick Young, blocked his shot, grabbed a rebound and turned the ball over. In his eight minutes on the floor in the first half, the Magic performed poorly - outscored by 14 points.

They did much better in his second-half stint - with Arenas passing to Redick and Anderson for 3-pointers and playing fine defense on Nick Young.

"He never scores on me. He already knew what was going to happen," Arenas said.

Coach Stan Van Gundy never thought he would praise Arenas' defense, but he did after the game.

"I thought Gilbert defensively was fabulous. I don't know how many times a coach has stood here and said that about him, but he really was the guy," Van Gundy said.

Washington, which has lost seven straight, and nine of 10, was led by Young and Kirk Hinrich with 17.

Wizards rookie guard John Wall was ejected from the game with 2:26 remaining. He had picked up his first technical earlier in the fourth quarter, and as he walked toward the locker room, he stripped off his jersey and tossed it into the crowd.

"A couple of calls didn't go our way. I had something to say about it, and I guess the refs didn't like it," Wall said. "I don't know what calls rookies are supposed to get."

"I think he's frustrated," Washington coach Flip Saunders said. "I think he's getting knocked down - and he's not getting many calls when he goes to the basket."

Notes: Washington rookie F Trevor Booker had six blocks. ... Orlando F Brandon Bass missed his second straight game with a sprained left ankle. ... The Wizards recalled C Hamady Ndiaye from Dakota of the D-League, but he won't play for at least a few weeks. According to Saunders, Ndiaye recently hurt his knee and he'll be better able to get treatment in Washington.

THE FACTS: Dwight Howard hit his first 10 shots and finished 10-for-11 with 22 points and 15 rebounds as the Orlando Magic beat the Washington Wizards 110-92 on Friday night. Ryan Anderson had 19 points, Jason Richardson, 18 and J.J. Redick, 15.

In his first game in Washington since the Dec. 18 trade from the Wizards to the Magic, Gilbert Arenas had 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Nick Young and Kirk Hinrich led the Wizards, who lost for the seventh straight time, with 17 points. John Wall, who was ejected late in the fourth quarter, had 14 points.

THE STAT: Howard was 10-for-11 from the field, and didn't even attempt a shot in the fourth quarter.

TURNING POINT: A 9-0 third quarter run on a 3-pointer by Anderson and three baskets by Howard that gave Orlando a 70-62 lead with 3:01 to play in the third quarter.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: With Brandon Bass out with a sprained left ankle, Anderson started for the second straight night and hit three 3-pointers. If Bass stays out, Anderson could be a real find.

GOOD MOVE: A night after Van Gundy played Howard all 48 minutes, he limited him to 32 minutes, and he was very effective.

BAD MOVE: Young continuing to shoot while Arenas continued to harass him.

ROOKIE WATCH: Besides Wall, forward Trevor Booker had six points and six blocked shots in 24 minutes. Center Kevin Seraphin.did not score. The Magic have no rookies.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The crowd of 18,940 was mostly pro-Arenas, though there were a number of jeerers.

NOTABLE: The Magic were 12-for-31 from 3-point range. The Wizards were just 3-for-10. Hinrich hit all three in the fourth quarter.
