Mavericks-Celtics Preview

Dirk Nowitzki became the 24th player to reach 22,000 points in the Dallas Mavericks' latest win, their sixth straight as they continue to re-establish themselves as one of the best in the Western Conference.

In what's becoming a Hall of Fame career, Nowitzki has never been consistently better than he's been when facing the Boston Celtics.

Nowitzki's 27.3 points per game versus Boston are his most against any opponent, but the league's stingiest defensive team should provide a stiff challenge Friday night at TD Garden.

The Mavericks (33-15) lost seven of the nine games Nowitzki missed with a sore knee in late December and early January, and dropped three of four upon his return.

Suddenly, they've regained the form that allowed them to win 17 of 18 prior to Nowitzki's injury. Dallas shot 50.0 percent and outrebounded New York 54-34 while cruising to a 113-97 victory at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night.

The Mavericks have averaged 104.5 points during their six consecutive wins - 14.6 more than in their previous 13 games - but Nowitzki believes defense is making the difference. Dallas limited the high-scoring Knicks to 45 second-half points.

"I think our defense has been going back to where we were in November-December," said Nowitzki, who finished with 29 points. "I think if you look at our effort defensively in the second half, that's what won us the game."

His offense didn't hurt. After scoring 13 in the first half to hit exactly 22,000, Nowitzki had eight points in 2 1/2 minutes early in the third - part of a 26-6 run that gave Dallas a 24-point cushion.

"There's a guy who's worked more on developing his game (than anybody) in the history of the league," coach Rick Carlisle told the NBA's official website. "There's a reason the ball goes in the basket. He's put in the work."

The Celtics (37-11) are well aware. In addition to his career-best 27.3 points per game against Boston, his average at TD Garden - 27.7 - is his best at any venue.

Nowitzki had 37 points there in his last visit, a 99-90 Dallas win Jan. 18, 2010. He had 25 at home against the Celtics on Nov. 8 as the Mavericks shot 50.0 percent in an 89-87 victory.

Boston hasn't let any of its last 10 opponents make half their shots, a stretch in which it's gone 8-2. The Celtics have yielded 90.0 points per game in that stretch - 1.5 below their league-best average - and wrapped up a 3-1 western road trip with a 95-90 win at Sacramento on Tuesday.

Boston held the Kings to 36 second-half points as it climbed out of a nine-point hole, dug primarily when the Celtics' second unit was on the floor. The club's last eight opponents have averaged 41.1 points and shot 40.2 percent after halftime.

"Usually I have to say something at halftime. I kind of stood outside the locker room," coach Doc Rivers said. "(The starters) were upset. They weren't upset that they didn't play well, they were upset at the way they played. We don't play that way. That's not Celtic basketball. That's the great thing about having a veteran team."

While Nowitzki has thrived against the Celtics, the player picked one spot behind him in the 1998 draft has fared well versus Dallas. Paul Pierce has averaged 25.7 points in 11 matchups with the Mavericks since the start of the 2005-06 season, his most against any opponent in that span.

Boston is 16-0 against the East at home, but just 6-3 versus West opponents there.

Kidd 3-pointer lifts Mavs to 101-97 win over Celts

BOSTON (AP) The game began with the 3-point spotlight on Ray Allen. It ended with it shining on Jason Kidd.

Kidd, third in NBA history in 3-pointers made, hit one with 2.5 seconds left, putting the Dallas Mavericks ahead to stay as they scored the last 10 points and beat the Boston Celtics 101-97 on Friday night for their seventh straight win.

Allen, second on the 3-point list, missed a desperation shot from behind the arc as the buzzer sounded, leaving him five behind Reggie Miller as his quest to pass him continues.

"You're not a shooter, so they're going to give you the shot," said Kidd, known throughout his career more for his passing and all-around play.

Allen, though, knew not to underestimate the player who passed Dale Ellis this season to take over third place.

"He's proven over his career that he can knock the 3-ball down," Allen said. "For most of his career, he hasn't been given the credit for being able to shoot because he's been able to do so many other things well. He's always had the stigma that he was flashy, but he was very effective."

With the Celtics leading 97-96, Kevin Garnett missed an 18-foot jumper with 15 seconds to go. Then the Mavericks tried to go inside, but Dirk Nowitzki had trouble handling the ball and threw it to Kidd. He went up to shoot, then held back as Allen flew past him, and finally put the ball up for his second 3-pointer of the game.

"The play was all over the place. I was just lucky to get the ball out to him," said Nowitzki, who led all scorers with 29 points. "The pump fake is one of the toughest shots in basketball. That he made that shot is amazing."

After a timeout, Boston's Rajon Rondo threw the ball over Garnett's head and out of bounds on an alley-oop play. Garnett then fouled Nowitzki, who made two free throws with 2.2 seconds left. Allen, who led Boston with 24 points, then missed the final 3-pointer.

He went 3 for 6 from beyond the arc and needs to make six more to break Miller's NBA record of 2,560. His next chance to add to his total of 2,555 comes Sunday at home against the Orlando Magic. Kidd is a distant third with 1,742.

"There's a sense of me getting sidetracked if you worry about it because you feel like you've got to shoot it from beyond the arc," Allen said. "I don't want to press. I don't want to step outside of what we're trying to do here."

The Celtics fell to 22-4 at home, the third-best record in the NBA. And they seemed headed to another victory in front of their fans with less than three minutes to go in a game that was tight throughout.

A layup by Kendrick Perkins with 2:42 remaining put the Celtics ahead 97-91. But they didn't score again.

"I thought we got shots that we wanted," Paul Pierce said. "We just missed them."

Nowitzki began the game-winning spurt with a three-point play with 2:22 to go and Jason Terry made it 97-96 with two free throws with 56 seconds left.

Allen missed a 3-pointer. Then Garnett stole the ball from Nowitzki, but Boston couldn't take advantage as Garnett missed his 18-footer.

The Mavericks immediately called timeout and nearly ruined their opportunity when Nowitzki fumbled the ball. But Kidd bailed him out.

"Ray jumped out at me," said Kidd, who had 10 points and nine assists. "If he didn't jump at me I was going to shoot it anyway because I just felt that the next shot I was going to take was going go in."

Dallas won the first meeting 89-87 at home on Nowitzki's jumper with 17.9 seconds remaining, ending Boston's five-game winning streak.

On Friday, Terry had 17 points and Tyson Chandler had 14 points with 15 rebounds for Dallas.

"You've got so many players that have been through (close games) on this team," Chandler said. "We've got options to go to down the stretch."

Boston got 16 points from Garnett, 12 of them in the first quarter, and 13 points and 12 rebounds from Perkins, making his first start in his six games this season following offseason surgery for a knee injury sustained in Game 6 of the NBA finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Dallas and Boston were tied at 77 entering the fourth quarter and the game remained tied at 81 before Nowitzki's turnaround shot from the left baseline put Dallas ahead 83-81 with 9:44 to go. But the Celtics scored the next seven points, making it 88-83.

Kidd, though, scored the most important points.

"He's put teams on his back," Garnett said. "He's carried the load and the responsibility for a long time."

Notes: Garnett made his first six shots but missed 10 of his last 11. ... Both teams were on target at the start with the Celtics hitting 68.4 percent of their shots in the first quarter and the Mavericks making 66.7 percent. ... Dallas had more than 100 points for the sixth straight game and is 24-1 when it scores that much. ... Pierce was held to just 12 points and missed five of his six 3-pointers.

Mavericks-Celtics notebook

THE FACTS: Jason Kidd hit the game-winning 3-pointer with just 2.5 seconds remaining in regulation as the Dallas Mavericks edged the Boston Celtics 99-97 for their seventh straight win. Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, as the Mavericks closed out the game with a 10-0 run to put an exclamation point on the come-from-behind victory. Ray Allen scored 24 points for the Celtics, in just their fourth home loss on the season.

QUOTABLE: "I loved the way our guys battled. It comes down to a make or miss here or there, that's how close it was. Fortunately we were able to hang in and make plays. Kidd's shot was huge and we got the stops we needed."

THE STAT: Two of the most efficient offenses in the NBA were on display from the starting tip Friday night. In the opening 12 minutes both teams combined for 61 points overall, and collectively hit a staggering 67.5 percent of their field goals. The Celtics trailed by seven at the end of the frame, despite hitting 13 of their 19 shot attempts.

TURNING POINT: Down one with just under 10 seconds remaining in the game, the Mavericks attempted to pass the ball to a rolling Nowitzki in the post. The All-Star fumbled the pass, yet still recovered enough to pass out of a triple team by the collapsing Celtics defense. Kidd was the recipient of Nowitzki's good look and shook off his defender before drilling the game winner at the top of the key.

QUOTABLE II: "I just thought defensively we broke a lot of our defensive rules. I thought we played hard, but I thought we tried to cheat a lot defensively as a team, you know gambles, and they made us pay for every one of them."

HOT: Kevin Garnett -- The Eastern Conference All-Star hit a couple early layups against Nowitzki and carried the momentum through the rest of the first quarter. The Big Ticket finished the period with 12 points, going a scorching 6-for-6 from the field.

NOT: Garnett cooled off considerably after his hot start, missing nine of his final 10 shots, including a wide open mid-range jumper with just under a minute remaining and the Celtics clinging to a one-point lead.

QUOTABLE III: "Jason Kidd has a track record of hitting big shots and putting teams on his back. He's carried the load and responsibility for a long time."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Kendrick Perkins made his first start of the season at center in just his sixth game of the season. Upon rejoining the C's regular starting five, the veteran had his first double-double since April 4, 2010 against Cleveland Cavaliers. Perkins finished the night with 13 points and 12 rebounds in 32 minutes of action, posting a season high in all three categories

GOOD MOVE: With the Mavericks thin at the three spot, Carlisle elected to go small in the backcourt and give the 6-foot J.J. Barea his first start of the year at shooting guard. The former Northeastern star responded with hot shooting from the outside, going 2-for-3 from downtown on his way to 11 points on the evening. He has hit five of his last seven shots from beyond the arc.

BAD MOVE: Down one with just under three seconds remaining, Rajon Rondo inbounded the ball for Boston near halfcourt. The C's point guard tried to connect with Garnett on a risky alley-oop toss, but Rondo's pass sailed over Garnett's head out of bounds, turning the ball over to Dallas.

ROOKIE WATCH: With Shaquille O'Neal sidelined, Semih Erden worked his way off the bench for the first time in three games. The Turkish center logged eight minutes in the first half, and was active offensively, hitting two of his four shots. He should remain in the rotation as long as O'Neal is inactive.

NOTABLE: With the win, Dallas swept the season series between the teams. Danny Ainge announced after the game Jermaine O'Neal underwent surgery Friday to "clean up" his ailing left knee. He is expected to sit out an additional 6-8 weeks of action. S. O'Neal sat out the game with a inflamed Achilles. He is also doubtful for the team's Sunday matinee contest against the Orlando Magic. Allen hit 3 treys on the evening and is up to 2,555 overall through his career. He needs just six more to break Reggie Miller's record as the all-time leader in 3-pointers. Both teams combined for just ten free throws in the first half. Dallas had six players in double figures. Tyson Chandler had a terrific effort in the middle for the Mavs with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Dallas held Boston scoreless for the final 2:38 of regulation.
