Carmelo Anthony is ready to make his long-awaited arrival in New Jersey.

Unfortunately for Nets fans, the four-time All-Star will still be donning his Denver Nuggets uniform.

Anthony and the Nuggets visit New Jersey on Monday, less than two weeks after Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov ended drawn-out trade talks with Denver.

Since refusing to sign a three-year, $65 million extension last summer, Anthony has been the subject of trade speculation. Two potential blockbuster deals have involved the Nets (14-34), and both fell apart.

Denver (28-19), New Jersey and Detroit seemed close to a three-team trade earlier this month, but Prokhorov canceled a planned Jan. 20 meeting with Anthony on Jan. 19, and said there was no chance of resurrecting the trade. Prokhorov said he was unhappy with how the talks played out in public, and that the process took too long, got too expensive and cost his team games.

At the time, the Nets had lost six straight.

Chicago, Houston and New York have all since been linked to trade rumors with Anthony, who has said he has not ruled out any options for his future.

"As of right now, I don't think the Nets will be calling," he said, laughing, after Sunday's 110-99 loss at Philadelphia to snap a four-game winning streak.

Anthony isn't sure of what kind of reception he'll receive when he takes the court in New Jersey, but he knows he'll have to play better than he did against the 76ers.

Anthony finished with 12 points, shot 3 of 12 from the floor, and said his knees "tightened up" on him during the game. He is hoping some soreness won't be a big deal when he faces the New Jersey team that appeared on the brink of acquiring him two weeks ago.

"I really don't know what to expect," Anthony said. "I know me, personally, I'm just looking forward to going there and getting a win."

Denver coach George Karl expects a playoff atmosphere.

"I expect it to be a pregame intensity to the game, and then I'm sure there will be some antics during the game that will have to be understood and handled," Karl said. "I would say for most of the time, those things usually motivate my team to play more focused and serious. If we have to play an intense playoff-type style game against a team like New Jersey, I think we're capable of doing that."

These teams last met in Denver on Nov. 20, when Anthony had 28 points and eight rebounds in a 107-103 victory. The Nuggets have won four straight against the Nets and seven of the last eight meetings.

New Jersey won four of its first five games after Prokhorov decided to end the trade talks with Anthony, but has since lost its last two - both on the road.

The Nets, winners of four of their last five home games, couldn't muster much offense at Milwaukee on Saturday, losing 91-81 to drop to 2-27 when scoring 92 points or fewer.

"We need to get back to swinging the ball because that's what we do when we're playing well," said Devin Harris, who had 16 of New Jersey's 19 assists.

Brook Lopez was a bright spot, finishing with 26 points in the defeat. He is averaging 24.5 points on 55.9-percent shooting in his last 10 games after averaging 14.3 points and shooting 45.8 percent in his previous nine.

Lopez had 20 points in Denver in November to lead seven New Jersey players in double figures.

Nets beat Anthony in first game since talks end

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Who needs Carmelo Anthony?

The New Jersey Nets certainly didn't in their first game against Melo and his Nuggets since owner Mikhail Prokhorov told his team to halt lingering trade talks with Denver for the All-Star forward a little less than two weeks ago.

Brook Lopez scored 27 points, Devin Harris had a career-high 18 assists and the Nets gave Anthony an indication why he might want to play for New Jersey with a 115-99 victory Monday night.

"This was something I never experienced before with the trade situation, so not just me, everyone was fired up" said Nets guard Anthony Morrow, who was part of the 15-player, three-team deal that Prokhorov suddenly ended because he felt it was hurting his team.

It showed. The Nets hit 53.2 percent from the field, shot 60 percent from 3-point range, forced 16 turnovers and outrebounded the Nuggets 38-27.

Morrow said it was nothing personal against Anthony, but it was a desire to show that the Nets (15-34) are good enough to win with their current personnel. They are 5-3 since the talks ended.

"Everyone had that chip on their shoulder," said Morrow, who scored 18 points on 6 of 6 from the field. "You could kind of see the look in guys eyes even this morning at shootaround. It's a situation we're just glad we're still here and wish them the best of luck the rest of the season."

Anthony gave the fans who jeered and cheered him at different times a clear indication why he is so valued, scoring 37 points - two shy of his season high - to keep his team in the game.

Anthony, who continues to be involved in trade speculation with the NBA deadline on Feb. 24 approaching, wasn't surprised by the Nets' effort.

"Why shouldn't they feel a little extra motivated tonight in a game like this, knowing that their names have been in cahoots with the Denver Nuggets for the past couple of months," Anthony said.

Anthony also felt the credit for the Nets' turnaround belongs to Prokhorov.

"I think he really did it more for his team," Anthony said. "Ever since he made that statement, they've been playing hard. They seem like they're committed and as a result they beat us tonight."

Travis Outlaw scored 13 of his 20 points in a big first quarter and Kris Humphries had 15 and nine rebounds for New Jersey, which hit 9 of 15 3-pointers.

Harris and Lopez insisted the Nets were more concerned about ending a two-game losing streak than making a statement about the proposed trade, which had players worried about their future for weeks.

Harris came close though.

"As a player, you always have that pride, you want to take it upon yourself and know that we think we have enough to win," he said. "It's not always within our control, but this is the best way we can speak for ourselves, going out and giving it a great effort like we did tonight."

Chauncey Billups, who was also supposed to be sent to New Jersey in the deal, had 17 of his 19 points in the second half. Nene added 16.

New Jersey never trailed after the opening minutes and led by as many as 18 points in the first half.

However, Melo wouldn't let the Nuggets go away and Harris, who was the major part in the Nets deal to the Nuggets, wouldn't let Denver get over the hump in its comeback.

Trailing 82-69 with 2:36 left in the third quarter, Anthony hit a jumper to ignite a 9-3 run that featured six of Billups' 11 points in the quarter.

The lead shrunk and it looked as if it was down to 85-81 when J.R. Smith hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was reviewed and waved off because the shot left his hand a split second too late.

Denver managed to cut the lead to four points three times in the fourth quarter, the last at 96-92 on a drive and jam by Nene with 7:43 to play.

Harris then drove for a layup to ignite an 8-1 run that ended with six free throws, one courtesy of a technical against Billups, who was miffed a foul wasn't called when he was stripped for his seventh turnover.

Denver never got close after that.

New Jersey scored hit 25 of 40 shots from the field in the first half, including 6 of 8 from long range, in taking a 63-50 lead over the Nuggets, who were losing their second game in as many nights.

The halftime point total was a season high for New Jersey, which needed it because Anthony was single-handedly almost as good.

Melo scored 23 in the half, hitting 6 of 12 from the field and 9 of 10 free throws.

NOTES: Nets backup guard Jordan Farmar missed his third straight game with a back strain. ...Ben Uzoh got his playing time and had six points and four assists. ... Former Net Kenyon Martin returned to the Nuggets lineup after sitting out the game in Philadelphia because of concerns over his knee.

THE FACTS: In an old-fashioned ABA shootout, the Nets brought the gunslinger's delight, downing the Nuggets 115-97. Only three Nets shot below fifty percent for the game and none of those players took more than four shots. The subject of nonstop trade rumors, Carmelo Anthony (37 points, 9 rebounds, 12-22 from the floor) equipped himself well in defeat.

QUOTABLE: "That was interesting."

THE STAT: Sharing is caring, and Devin Harris handed out 18 assists.

TURNING POINT: "Hip Hop Hooray" played after Harris connected with Kris Humphries on an alley-oop. This was followed by a Nuggets turnover and another alley-oop?from Harris to Brook Lopez (27 points)?to put the Nets up 63-46.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Dubbed the "closer" by Avery Johnson, Anthony Morrow (18 points, 6-6 from the field, 4-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) almost pitched a perfect offensive game. Johnson downplayed the metaphor after the game, instead choosing to praise the team.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The Nets warmed up to Jay-Z's "Already Home" and "Roc Boys" as the pregame clock wound down..."Welcome to Newark," Nets public relations maven Gary Sussman said when introducing former Net Kenyon Martin...Anthony received mostly boos from a sparse crowd, which serenaded him whenever he touched the ball early on...The NETSational Seniors Dance team performed to Drake's "Oh You Fancy Huh"...Yankees ace C.C. ROOKIE WATCH: Derrick Favors (6 points, 6 rebounds) had a quiet night.

NOTABLE: Martin started out hot, hitting a banker off the window and stealing the ball from Favors, which resulted in a clear path foul and two free throws. Martin split the pair and Denver retained possession. Martin then hit a sweeping hook to make it Kenyon 5, Nets 2...Travis Outlaw (21 points) started the game 4-4, as the Nets jumped out to a 16-7 lead...Anthony went to spinning moves a lot in the first frame... Martin goal-tended a Morrow shot into the basket to give the Nets a 59-43 lead late in the second quarter.
