Nets-Pacers Preview

The New Jersey Nets haven't won three straight games in nearly two years, and their recent history against the Indiana Pacers suggests that stretch may continue.

With Indiana reeling, New Jersey may be in prime position to change that.

The Nets look to build on momentum from a 4-1 homestand Friday night when they visit the Pacers, losers of six straight.

New Jersey (14-32) has lost four in a row and seven of eight against Indiana, but the streaking Nets seem to be playing with a different mentality since owner Mikhail Prokhorov ended trade talks for Denver's Carmelo Anthony.

New Jersey erased a 16-point deficit Wednesday in a 93-88 victory against Memphis for its fourth win in five games since Prokhorov ordered to end trade talks between the Nets, Nuggets and Detroit Pistons.

"Right now the spirit of our team is at an all-time high, just in terms of all the things we've tried to implement and trying to change this culture," coach Avery Johnson said. "We're seeing some of the product of our hard work."

Monday's 103-101 win against Cleveland surpassed last season's win total, and New Jersey looks to win three straight for the first time since winning four in a row from Jan. 31-Feb. 7, 2009.

Anthony Morrow scored a team-high 19 points and led a surge off the bench for the Nets, whose reserves outscored the Grizzlies' 56-12. New Jersey's starting five scored 37 points and shot only 13 for 40 from the field.

"Boy, they were special," Johnson said of his bench. "They were really good tonight. Our starters needed a lift. We've been talking about our bench and getting their own identity. It was good to see their production."

Brook Lopez scored 17 points against Memphis, but he averaged 24.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in Indiana's four-game sweep of New Jersey last season.

The Pacers (16-26) hope to avoid their first seven-game losing streak since dropping eight straight from Dec. 18-30, 2009.

Indiana gave up a franchise record 16 3-pointers Wednesday in a 111-96 loss to Orlando. Danny Granger scored 27 points for the Pacers, who have lost 12 of 15.

Granger has averaged 24.5 points in his last six against New Jersey.

"We're sliding right now, and if we don't stop it soon, we'll be out of the playoff mix," Granger said of his team, which has fallen two games behind eighth-place Charlotte for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot. "It's do or die right now for us."

Tyler Hansbrough scored a career-high 27 points in 30-plus minutes Sunday against Denver, but he was held to only eight points in just over 18 minutes Wednesday. Hansbrough has started the last 10 games, but his minutes continue to fluctuate. He's averaged 19.6 points and 9.0 rebounds in the five games he has played more than 24 minutes, but only 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in the 27 he has played less than that amount.

Brandon Rush, who has averaged only 5.5 points in his last six, sprained his left ankle in the third quarter and did not return. His status for Friday is unclear.

Dunleavy, Pacers crush Nets 124-92

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Pacers ended their six-game losing streak in resounding fashion.

Mike Dunleavy scored 30 points to help the Pacers beat the Nets 124-92 on Friday night. It was Indiana's second-best scoring effort of the season, behind its NBA season-high, 144-point outburst Nov. 9 against Denver.

The Pacers finally looked like the team that got off to a strong start and had fans thinking about the playoffs after a four-year absence.

"It was no fun losing six in a row," Dunleavy said. "We know that we can win, we know that we have to come out strong, move the ball, play 'D' and find a way to win. We want to be aggressive and make better decisions on all occasions. I think tonight is the beginning and we just need to work, work, work."

Dunleavy shot 12 for 16 from the field and made 6-of-7 3-pointers in his first game with 30 or more points in more than two months. He helped the Pacers post their largest margin of victory this season.

"I thought we moved the ball well, we shared it, guys made shots and it seemed like we were in a really good flow," he said. "That's the difference and hopefully we can do that more often."

Roy Hibbert scored 20 points, Danny Granger had 18 and rookie Paul George added 15 for the Pacers, who shot 63 percent overall and made 12-of-22 3-pointers.

Brook Lopez led the Nets with 28 points. New Jersey had won four of its past five games, but allowed its highest point total of the season. Nets coach Avery Johnson was disappointed in the effort, particularly with their inability to guard Indiana's perimeter shooters.

"Hopefully, when we keep getting our faces smashed in, we'll get it," he said. "You get your face smashed in enough, sometime, you're going to have to learn to fight back. It's the growing pains of this year."

Hibbert bounced back after scoring just four points in 15 minutes against Orlando on Wednesday. Pacers coach Jim O'Brien had reduced his role in recent weeks in favor of a smaller lineup.

"It felt nice being out there again," Hibbert said. "I was just wanting to be aggressive, and hopefully I can put some games together and help this team win. "

Granger said he thought it was important to help Hibbert get his offensive game established early.

"I was just trying to pass up shots just so I could get Roy going," Granger, the team's leading scorer, said. "We really focused on getting him going because he's so important to what we try to do here."

Dunleavy scored 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting in the first half, and Indiana shot 62 percent before the break to take a 68-54 lead.

"When Mike is shooting like that, he's probably the best guy that we have that moves, so he's pretty much unguardable," Granger said.

The Pacers tied for their highest-scoring first half of the season.

"I can't think of a game this year where we've given up 60 points in a half," Johnson said.

New Jersey shot 53 percent in the first half, but the Pacers committed only two turnovers and outrebounded the Nets to negate Lopez's 18-point effort.

Indiana opened the second half with a 12-6 surge to take an 80-60 lead, and the rout was on. The Pacers reached 100 points on a free throw by James Posey with 1:40 left in the third quarter.

"Take your hats off to Indiana," Johnson said. "They came out like a desperate team ready to play, and we just continued our poor road play."

NOTES: Stephen Graham, a former Pacer, started for the Nets and had four points in 26 minutes. ... Indiana F Tyler Hansbrough sat out with pneumonia after 10 straight starts. Josh McRoberts started in his place after being inactive the previous three games and had seven points and five assists. ... Indiana G Brandon Rush sat out with a sprained right ankle. ... Pacers-Nets notebook

THE FACTS: Mike Dunleavy had a game-high 30 points and Roy Hibbert added 20 points as the Indiana Pacers pulled away for an easy 124-92 victory over the New Jersey Nets in Indianapolis Friday night.

Danny Granger added 18 points for Indiana, which shot 62.5 percent for the game and pulled away from a tie game early in the second quarter for a 14-point halftime lead.

Dunleavy scored 20 of his points in the first half for Indiana, which also shot 60 percent from the floor for just the second game this season.

Center Brook Lopez scored 28 points for the Nets, who had won four of their last five games.

The margin of victory was the highest of the season for Indiana, which snapped a season-high six-game losing streak.

THE STAT: Ball movement was a major key for Indiana Friday. Not only does Dunleavy excel when the Pacers are moving the ball offensively, the team plays more efficiently offensively when their small lineup passes quickly and creates open looks. The Pacers had 31 assists to 21 for the Nets, and Indiana committed just nine turnovers.

TURNING POINT: The game didn't have the look of a blowout early, with the Nets leading by six in the first quarter and the game still tied 36-36 with just under 10 minutes remaining. The Pacers outscored New Jersey 32-17 over the next eight-and-a-half minutes, and never trailed by less than double digits again.

QUOTABLE II: "It was nice to get some team confidence back. Hopefully, we can build on it."

HOT: Just about everyone on the Pacers was hot -- particularly early. But Dunleavy came out particularly strong, shooting 8-of-10 from the field in the first half, including 4-of-5 field goals from 3-point range. He finished 12-of-16 from the field, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range.

NOT: The Nets didn't shoot poorly, finishing 47.9 shooting, but they never could play well enough defensively to slow Indiana and make a run. The Pacers outscored the Nets in every quarter, and led by as many as 34 points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Hibbert, the Pacers' third-year center, has had some well-documented struggles in recent weeks, but he played with far more confidence and effectiveness on Friday. He shot 5-of-9 in the first half and was active throughout, shooting 7-of-12 for the game and finishing with six rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.

GOOD MOVE: With forward Tyler Hansbrough out with pneumonia, the Pacers were expected to start veteran Jeff Foster. Instead, O'Brien opted to start forward Josh McRoberts, a starter early in the season who had played just four of the last nine games. He was active and helped Indiana with their ball movement and energy early, finishing with seven points, five assists and four rebounds and did not commit a turnover. O'Brien said McRoberts' presence also helped Hibbert, who O'Brien said excels with better ball movement.

ROOKIE WATCH: Rookie swingman Paul George has become a major positive for the Pacers in recent weeks. After playing sparingly at times in the first two months of the season, he is getting significant minutes off the bench and scored 15 points with three rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes Friday. He has scored in double figures his last three games.

QUOTABLE III: "We just couldn't figure out how to get consistent stops. They did a great job of ball movement and making their open shots. Defensively, we just couldn't figure it out tonight."

NOTABLE: Brandon Rush missed the game for Indiana with a sprained right ankle. . . Dunleavy's 30 points were his second-highest total of the season. . . . The Pacers shot well from the field, but that didn't translate to the free-throw line. They shot 12 of 21 from the line, their worst free-throw shooting game of the season. . . . Nets reserve forward Jordan Farmar missed the game after his back tightened up shortly before the game. "We definitely missed Jordan tonight," Johnson said.
