Bobcats-Suns Preview

After coming up empty on the final two stops of their five-game trip, the Phoenix Suns will try to bounce back at home against another sub-.500 Eastern Conference opponent.

The Charlotte Bobcats, though, have been much better following a midseason coaching change.

Looking for a season-best fourth consecutive home victory, Phoenix hopes to avoid a fourth straight loss to the Bobcats when the teams meet Wednesday night.

Following wins at New York, Cleveland and Washington that extended their overall winning streak to a season-high five games, the Suns (20-23) stumbled as they closed out their trip with losses to Detroit and Philadelphia.

Phoenix fell 105-95 in a sloppy performance against the 76ers on Monday night, and coach Alvin Gentry knows his team needs to take better care of the basketball going forward.

"You've got no chance to win a game in the NBA if you give up 30 points on turnovers. That's 54 the last two games," said Gentry. "Obviously that's an area of immediate concern."

Vince Carter's shooting woes continued as he was held to a season-low two points on 1-of-6 shooting. Carter, averaging 15.2 points on the season, has averaged 6.5 while shooting 25.0 percent in his last four games.

Suns swingman Jared Dudley, who was drafted by the Bobcats (18-25) in 2007, scored 23 points Monday and believes that getting back to Phoenix could make all the difference.

"We've just got to go home on this plane and get some rest and get ready to go," Dudley said.

Steve Nash was held out of a 123-105 loss at Charlotte on Nov. 20 with a groin injury, but he has scored at least 22 points in four of his last five home games against the Bobcats, helping the Suns to four wins.

Charlotte, however, has taken three in a row from Phoenix by an average of 16.4 points, and it has nine wins in 15 games overall since Paul Silas replaced Larry Brown as coach Dec. 22.

Kwame Brown recorded 13 points and a season-high 18 rebounds as the Bobcats kicked off a six-game trip with a 94-89 win at Sacramento on Tuesday night.

"I'm getting more opportunities, more playing time," said Brown. "I'm starting to get comfortable with the guys. It's nothing against coach (Larry) Brown, I missed all of training camp (with a left ankle sprain) and feel like I'm just starting to get in shape."

Stephen Jackson snapped out of his shooting slump Tuesday with a 7-of-15 display en route to 21 points.

Jackson, who had averaged 13.6 points on 30.8 percent shooting in his previous seven contests, could be in line for another big game versus the Suns.

He has averaged 27.7 points on 60.4 percent shooting from the floor - including 12 of 21 from 3-point range - in his last three meetings with Phoenix.

Charlotte's Boris Diaw, who spent three-plus seasons with the Suns, is averaging 22.4 points - 12.7 more than his career mark - in five games against his former team since he was traded in the deal that involved Dudley in 2008.

The Bobcats have allowed 85.5 points per game over back-to-back road wins. They haven't won three straight on the road since Jan. 26-30 of last season, which started with a 114-109 overtime win at Phoenix.

Jackson, Wallace lead Bobcats past Suns 114-107

PHOENIX (AP) Life under the relaxed reins of Paul Silas just keeps getting better for the Charlotte Bobcats.

Stephen Jackson scored 16 of his 23 points in the second half and the Bobcats won for the fourth time in five games, beating the Phoenix Suns 114-107 on Wednesday night.

Gerald Wallace had 16 of his 22 points in the final two quarters for Charlotte, which improved to 10-6 since Silas replaced Larry Brown as coach. After a 94-89 win at Sacramento on Tuesday, the Bobcats are off to a 2-0 start on a season-high, six-game road trip.

"The focus of these guys has really been phenomenal these last few games," Silas said. "That is one thing that carries us, that and they don't get rattled. I applaud them for that because before they would. There is no way we would have won this game tonight with them shooting 3s as they did."

It's the first time Charlotte has won consecutive road games this season.

"We are a confident team right now," Jackson said, "and we credit that to coach Silas. He gives us confidence and lets us play and it is starting to show."

Steve Nash had 27 points and 15 assists and Vince Carter scored 22 for Phoenix on his 34th birthday, but the Bobcats shot 51 percent to beat the Suns for the fourth time in a row.

The Suns, back from a five-game trip, lost their third straight after winning a season-high five in a row. They made 16 of 32 3-pointers, 12 of 19 in the second half, and it still wasn't enough.

Wallace credited Silas' "demeanor, his style, the way he coaches."

"He always tells us everything is all right, everything is OK, we're doing good, we're doing good," Wallace said.

Nash, who went 4 for 4 on 3s, connected from deep to cut the Bobcats' lead to 110-107 with 3:03 remaining but the Suns didn't score again. Gerald Henderson's 10-footer with 2:39 to play made it 112-107, and after consecutive fouls were called against Channing Frye, D.J. Augustin finished off the scoring with a pair of free throws with 1:49 left.

"We have to do better at finishing games," Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry said. "The bottom line is that there was 1:17 to go and we never got possession of the ball on three missed shots."

Charlotte was 25 of 29 at the free-throw line, compared with Phoenix's 9 of 10. The Suns didn't attempt a free throw in the second half, while the Bobcats were 13 of 16.

Marcin Gortat matched his career high with 16 points for the Suns but was scoreless and took just one shot in the second half.

"We have to will ourselves to win. We need to feel good about ourselves," Carter said.

Wallace made six of seven shots in the second half. Boris Diaw finished with 18 points and Augustin and Henderson had 15 apiece for Charlotte.

The Bobcats led nearly the entire first half, going up 53-45 on Wallace's tip-in 3:37 before the break. Carter responded with consecutive 3-pointers as the Suns outscored Charlotte 12-6 the rest of the half to cut the Bobcats' lead to 59-57.

The Suns made their first six 3s of the second half and were 8 of 11 from long range in the third quarter, but still trailed 92-87 entering the fourth.

NOTES: Nick Corrales, a member of the Suns' `Soul Patrol' that does a dunk-from-the trampoline performance between the third and fourth quarters, followed his dunk by going headfirst through the basket himself. ... THE FACTS: The visiting Charlotte Bobcats continued their rise under new coach Paul Silas by breaking open a close game at the Phoenix Suns then hanging on for a 114-107 win Wednesday night.

The Bobcats (19-25) had six players score in double figures led by Stephen Jackson with 23 and Gerald Wallace with 22. Gerald Henderson had a crucial 15 points off the bench.

The Suns got 27 points from Steve Nash, 22 from Vince Carter and 16 off the bench from Marcin Gortat. In dropping to 20-24, they were dealt a huge blow in their attempt to keep their playoff hopes realistic. They've now lost three straight after having won five in a row.

QUOTABLE: "This was a HUGE win for us ... a critical game ... I played guys a lot of minutes after playing last night. But we had guys going good, and I didn't want to disturb that."

THE STAT: The Bobcats got 29 free throws (they hit 25) while the Suns were awarded just 10 (they hit nine).

TURNING POINT: The Bobcats, down 79-72 midway through the third quarter, scored eight straight in less than two minutes to take an 80-79 lead. Wallace scored on a reverse layup, an alley-oop and two free throws in this span. By the end of the third period, they led 92-87. The Suns never came closer than two points (102-100 and 104-102) in the final quarter.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm sick of this losing crap."

HOT: Nash was 11-for-15 for 27 points plus 15 assists with just two turnovers.

NOT: Goran Dragic, Nash's backup, continued his disappointing season, with five points on 2-for-8 shooting, plus two assists and two turnovers.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: For the Bobcats, big man Kwame Brown and point guard D.J. Augustin continue to rise under new coach Silas, who is 10-6 since taking over for Larry Brown.

Since Silas took over 16 games ago, Augustin has averaged 18.5 points on 47 percent shooting. He'd averaged 12.6 points on 42 percent shooting before that. He had 15 points and 10 assists vs. the Suns.

Brown, who shot 4-for-5 for 12 points and pulled down 10 boards, has averaged 10.0 rebounds the past six games. Over the past 12 games, he's averaging 9.5 points on 60 percent shooting plus 9.2 rebounds.

NOTABLE: Carter surpassed former Suns great Tom Chambers for 36th place on the all-time scoring list. Chambers finished with 20,049 points. Carter entered the game with 20,046 points and, after scoring 22, now has 20,068.
