Rockets-Timberwolves Preview

Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman has not been pleased with his team's defensive effort over the last two games. A matchup with the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves could change how he feels.

The Rockets look to avoid a third straight loss Monday night when they will try to win their 13th straight over Minnesota and sixth in a row on the road in this matchup.

After holding their previous two opponents to 86.5 points on 43.1 percent shooting, the Rockets (20-25) have struggled in the last two, surrendering a season-worst 72 points in the paint in Friday's 115-110 loss at Memphis before Orlando shot 52.9 percent against them in a 118-104 home loss Saturday.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed with our effort. I can't remember a game that we've had like that," said Adelman, whose team has yielded 110 or more points in seven of the last 15 games. "... We've got to get back to the drawing board. Got a game against Minnesota Monday that we've got to get ready for."

While the Rockets are among the worst in the league in scoring defense (104.7 points per game) and field goal defense at 46.9 percent, Adelman's club should enter this matchup with plenty of confidence. Houston has won the previous 12 against Minnesota by an average of 15.7 points, holding the Timberwolves to 43.0 percent shooting in these games.

The Rockets limited the Timberwolves to 37.4 percent shooting in a 120-94 rout Nov. 7 for their first win this season as Luis Scola scored 24 points and Kevin Martin added 21. Additionally, Minnesota is trying to bounce back from its Western Conference-worst 21st road loss following a 126-111 defeat Wednesday to the Los Angeles Clippers.

"We're not necessarily the (Washington) Wizards (0-20 on the road), but we're definitely not the cream of the crop when it comes to winning on the road," Kevin Love said after totaling 26 points and 11 rebounds for his 29th straight double-double.

The Timberwolves (10-33), who play five of seven at Target Center, are a respectable 8-12 at home, but coach Kurt Rambis said he needs a better full-game effort from his team, which is committing a league-worst 17.1 turnovers per game and allowing an average of 108.4 points, also an NBA high.

Love has been a bright spot as the league leader in double-doubles (38) and rebounds per game with 15.6, but the third-year forward hasn't been able to carry the Timberwolves to many wins. Minnesota has six victories during Love's double-double streak.

"I'd rather be in (Blake Griffin's) shoes right now," Love said of the Clippers rookie, whose team has seven more wins than the Timberwolves.

Love had 16 points and 16 rebounds in the Nov. 7 loss, while teammate Michael Beasley added 15 points.

With starting center Darko Milicic questionable with a sprained left ankle and backup Nikola Pekovic - who had 11 points and a career-best 12 rebounds in the Nov. 7 loss - missing Wednesday's game with flu-like symptoms, Minnesota will likely need a big effort from Love and Beasley against Scola and Chuck Hayes.

Scola scored 25 with a career-high 21 boards in the teams' last matchup at Target Center - a 112-98 Rockets victory March 6.

Minnesota's last win versus Houston was at home, 103-99 in overtime Jan. 7, 2007.

Martin's 34 points lead Rockets over Timberwolves

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Scorers such as Kevin Martin dream about nights against a "defense" like the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Wolves have a hard enough time guarding spot-up shooters on the perimeter. When they're facing a guy who can blow by them on the way to the rim and also get a 3-pointer off in the blink of an eye, they don't stand a chance.

Martin scored 34 points and Shane Battier added a season-high 19 to lead the Houston Rockets to a 129-125 victory over the Timberwolves on Monday night.

"We made it interesting, that's what we do as a team," said Martin, who topped 30 points for the third time in five games. "There's no easy win for us, ever. We fought with it, stayed with it, fought through a rough stretch and came out with a win."

Luis Scola added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Rockets, who beat a Western Conference team for the first time in their last eight tries. Houston's 13 straight wins over Minnesota tie the franchise record for longest winning streak against one opponent.

Kevin Love had 24 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists and Wes Johnson added 19 points for the Timberwolves, who lost their fourth straight overall.

The Rockets made 14 3-pointers, feasting on the tumbling Timberwolves' awful defense. Minnesota entered the night last in the NBA in points allowed and then watched Houston hang 100 in the first three quarters.

Chase Budinger scored 12 points off the bench, including a four-point play with less than 9 minutes to play that gave Houston a 19-point lead.

The Rockets relaxed, allowing the Wolves to pull within three late in the game. But they closed it out at the free throw line in a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

"We're not anywhere close to where we should be," Love said of the team's defense. "It's something we need to figure out."

Minnesota had four days to prepare for the game, yet came out of the gate looking as though it was playing its third game in four nights.

After shooting 39 percent in a home loss to Orlando on Saturday, Houston scored a season-high 39 points in the first quarter in Minnesota, hitting six 3-pointers and using superior ball movement with 12 assists on 13 made baskets.

Martin made all three of his 3s and also got the Wolves' best defender, Corey Brewer, in foul trouble with two quick ones in the first 4 minutes. The slick shooter poured in 16 points in the first quarter, but the going got a little tougher after that.

"He's such a difficult player in this league to guard because of all the things that he can do," Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis said. "These are the types of players we have to figure out how to defend."

Martin scored just three points in the second, and the Timberwolves pulled within 65-63 at the break.

The Rockets grabbed control of the game with a 17-2 run midway through the third quarter that gave them a 93-74 lead, and the Wolves didn't cut it to single digits until late in the game.

"Coach challenged us at halftime and said we need to make some defensive stops, and I think our guys took pride in that," Martin said. "It helped us. It's a good thing we did because of the way the fourth quarter went it's another game we could have lost."

Rambis has maintained all along that his team has shown dramatic improvement from the start of the season, but there just aren't any wins to support that theory. The Wolves (10-34) have lost nine of their last 10 games, five of which have come by double digits.

Aaron Brooks scored 15 points and Chuck Hayes chipped in nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Houston.

"We have to find a way to get stops," Rambis said. "We can't allow a team to score that many points a quarter and expect to win ballgames."

NOTES: Tempers flared late when Brooks threw the ball off Love in anger after taking an inadvertent shot to the face. He was given a technical foul. ... The Timberwolves have hired former Philadelphia and Washington coach Jim Lynam as a consultant to help evaluate the team. ... Martin, an 89 percent free throw shooter, missed five free throws.

THE FACTS: The Houston Rockets looked like a team who had a big fourth-quarter lead against an inferior team and then mailed it in. And the Minnesota Timberwolves almost made them pay. Down 17 points with 4:15 to play, Minnesota closed the gap to three with a 20-6 run before running out of time and losing their ninth game in the last ten tries, 129-125.

QUOTABLE: "We got a big lead and then got casual with the ball. Instead of making them defend, we threw it away two or three times. Then the threes they hit -- I don't know what you do against a team that just comes down and fires.... The Wolves were doing whatever they wanted. We scored enough, but we didn't do anything on the defensive end."

THE STAT: Kevin Martin has scored at least 20 points in seven of his last nine games. He only needed a little over two quarters to eclipse that mark tonight. He had 19 points at the half and finished with 34 points.

TURNING POINT: Feeding off an even more lackluster effort than usual by Minnesota, Houston took control of the game in the third quarter with a 25-7 run. Martin scored 12 points in the quarter and Minnesota's frontcourt was held to four points.

NOTABLE: With his 24 points and 17 rebounds (and seven assists thrown in for good measure), Kevin Love recorded his 30th straight double-double, the longest such streak since Kevin Garnett tallied 37 straight double-doubles in 2006. Love's nine offensive rebounds matched that of the entire Rockets team.
