Pacers-Trail Blazers Preview

Coach Nate McMillan knew LaMarcus Aldridge had the potential to be a dominant NBA player when the Portland Trail Blazers traded for him in a draft day deal in 2006. McMillan is pleased to see him living up to those expectations.

Aldridge and the Blazers try to win a season-high fifth straight Saturday night when they go for their fifth consecutive victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Now in his fifth season after the Blazers acquired the No. 2 pick from Chicago, Aldridge is the team's No. 1 scoring option with Brandon Roy (knees) out indefinitely.

With Roy sidelined the last 18 games, Aldridge has averaged 25.9 points and 10.1 rebounds, increasing his career-high averages this season to 21.3 and 8.8 per game.

"I've been waiting for this," McMillan told the Blazers' official website after Aldridge had 28 points in Thursday's 108-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I really have. I said this to LaMarcus when he was drafted ... Most players coming into the league and they either play one or the other - you're a good defender or a scorer. This is special because he can do both."

Those skills could earn Aldridge his first All-Star game appearance. More importantly, his presence on the defensive end will be critical as the Blazers (24-20) will be without starting center Marcus Camby for the next few weeks after he had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday.

Despite another season marred by injuries, Portland is eighth in the Western Conference and enters Saturday looking to win five in a row for the first time since March 9-19.

The Blazers, averaging 101.2 points while going 11-2 at the Rose Garden since the beginning of December, continue their five-game homestand against a Pacers team that has dropped 11 of 12 on the road.

Indiana (16-23) is halfway through a four-game trip and lost its third straight overall Wednesday, falling 110-108 to Golden State on Monta Ellis' last-second shot over Brandon Rush.

The Pacers led by as many as 11 points but were done in by 20 turnovers.

"We can't give up 27 points on turnovers if we want to win," coach Jim O'Brien said. "... We did not execute that part of the game plan and that's why we lost. Turnovers killed us and that is the bottom line."

Indiana committed 18 turnovers in a 102-79 loss at Portland on March 3 in the teams' last meeting as the Blazers completed a second straight season sweep of the Pacers.

Danny Granger was the only Indiana player to score in double figures in that matchup with 30 points, and he scored 32 for a second consecutive game Wednesday but also had a game-high seven turnovers.

Although the loss of Camby leaves a big hole in the middle of the Blazers' defense, Indiana's struggles on the defensive end could continue if center Roy Hibbert misses a second straight game with an upper respiratory infection.

The Pacers are among the best in the league in field-goal percentage defense (43.9), but their last two opponents have shot a combined 52.7 percent while averaging 112.0 points.

Indiana, which last dropped four in a row March 2-6, will try to avoid a fifth consecutive loss to Portland after winning the previous nine matchups.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Nicolas Batum was certain his fourth straight 3-pointer was going to fall, even if it looked to everyone else like it wasn't.

"I was sure," he said about the last of a 3-point flurry that pulled the Portland Trail Blazers into the lead after trailing the Indiana Pacers by as many as 16 points Saturday night. The Blazers won it 97-92.

Teammate LaMarcus Aldridge had a different view - at first - of the hastily launched shot.

"I was like, `Take your time and make it.' Whoa! `Good shot, good shot,"' Aldridge mused.

Aldridge had 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Blazers, who have won five straight despite being beset by injuries and illness. Starting point guard Andre Miller was the latest casualty, missing the game because of gastroenteritis.

Batum, who hit five of eight 3-point attempts, had 23 points.

"Nic Batum really got hot from the 3-point line. We were spending so much attention on Aldridge that it left Batum open and he caught fire in the fourth quarter from downtown," Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said.

Danny Granger scored 24 points for the Pacers, who have lost four straight. James Posey's 3-pointer with 5.9 seconds left pulled Indiana within 95-92, but Wesley Matthews hit a pair of free throws to clinch it.

Miller left the game early in the first quarter after trying to play, leaving Portland to turn to swingman Rudy Fernandez at the point. Fernandez finished with 11 points and a season-high eight assists.

"We're hungry. We're working," Blazers coach Nate McMillan said. "We're not giving up or giving in to the adversity we've been facing."

Portland is playing without three-time All-Star Brandon Roy, who had arthroscopic surgery on both knees on Monday. Roy proclaimed before the game that he'd like to return this season, but would follow the advice of his doctors. The Blazers have set no timetable for his return.

Portland was also adjusting to the loss of center Marcus Camby, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday.

Indiana jumped out to a 35-19 lead after A.J. Price's 3-pointer early in the second quarter, and the Blazers spent the rest of the half trying to catch up.

Matthews' running 6-footer and free throw narrowed it to 47-40, but the Pacers led 53-46 at the half. Indiana also had first-half leads but wound up losing to the Clippers and the Warriors in the first two games of their West Coast road trip.

Portland closed to 66-62 on Aldridge's 16-foot baseline jumper, and the Pacers' shooting suddenly went cold.

Batum's first 3-pointer finally put Portland up 72-70 early in the fourth quarter. His fourth in that stretch gave the Blazers an 85-77 lead. His five total 3-pointers matched a career high.

Portland extended the lead to as many as 11 points, but Darren Collison's jumper closed Indiana within 90-87 with 1:48 to go. But Fernandez answered for the Blazers with a 3-pointer.

"We have to learn how to win in these situations and we're just not doing it. We're just not closing games out," Granger said. "We're hoping there is light at the end of the tunnel and we stop losing these games."

Collison and Mike Dunleavy finished with 14 apiece for the Pacers. Roy Hibbert had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

It was Portland's fifth straight victory over the Pacers.

Notes: Pacers president Larry Bird attended the game. ... Blazers center Greg Oden, who recently spoke for the first time since season-ending microfracture surgery on his left knee, joined Roy in a suit on the Blazers' bench. It was Oden's 23rd birthday. ... Fernandez and Patty Mills were donating 50 percent of their profits from their merchandise sold this month to help with the flood relief effort in Australia. Mills is an Aussie. ... The Pacers wrap up the road trip Sunday night at Denver. ... Aldridge has 21 double-doubles this season.

THE FACTS: LaMarcus Aldridge collected 25 points and 12 rebounds, Nicolas Batum knocked down five 3-pointers en route to a 23-point performance and Portland rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to beat Indiana 97-92 Saturday night at the Rose Garden. It was the fifth straight win for the Blazers (25-20). Danny Granger led Indiana (16-24) with 24 points.

THE STAT: Aldridge was 0-for-3 with two points in the first quarter as Indiana chose to double-team him every time he touched the ball.

TURNING POINT: The Pacers ralled from an 11-point deficit to get to within 90-87 with 1:48 remaining. But two big plays -- Rudy Fernandez nailed a 3-pointer and Dante Cunningham swatted a Darren Collison driving shot -- helped seal it for Portland.

QUOTABLE II: "When (Andre) Miller went out, I would imagine Nate (McMillan) was not crazy about what (Patty) Mills and (Armon) Johnson were going to give him at the point. He went with a veteran group. All three guys on the perimeter can shoot the three, and Cunningham can space the court. That makes it more difficult to handle Aldridge one-on-one. Despite their injuries, they have a lot of weapons."

HOT: On a night when Portland shot only .422 from the field, Batum sank 8 of 14 from the field, including a career-high 5 of 8 from 3-point range.

NOT: Mills missed his first five shots from the field, then made a trey to finish 1 for 6.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Fernandez was a force off the bench for Portland, contributing 11 points, eight assists, six rebounds and two steals in 37 minutes.

GOOD MOVE: With intestinal flu limiting Miller to the game's first 2:45, McMillan chose to use shooting guards Fernandez and Wesley Matthews to handle the ball in the second half and kept backup point guards Mills and Johnson on the bench. Fernandez and Matthews combined for 17 assists and got the job done at the point.

BAD MOVE: Indiana's defensive plan against Aldridge -- double-team him every time he touched the ball -- worked perfectly in the first quarter. Then the Pacers went away from it, and the Blazers' power forward made them pay the final three periods.

ROOKIE WATCH: Paul George came off the Indiana bench to hit 3 of 5 shots and contribute seven points and three rebounds in only seven minutes.

NOTABLE: In his last 20 games, Aldridge is shooting 53 percent while averaging 26.3 points and 10.2 rebounds.
