Rockets-Grizzlies Preview

The Houston Rockets hold a slim lead over the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference. Recent matchups between the teams have been anything but close.

The visiting Rockets try to win their fourth straight overall and eighth in a row over the struggling Grizzlies in a Southwest Division matchup Friday night.

With three consecutive wins and back-to-back losses by Memphis (19-23), Houston (20-23) has climbed past the Grizzlies and stayed close to eighth-place Portland in the West. The Rockets, a handful of games out of the final playoff spot, are 10th in the conference.

The Rockets, who defeated New York 104-89 on Wednesday, will try to extend their run before hosting Orlando on Saturday.

"We want to take it to four straight wins and then we can think about Orlando," big man Luis Scola told the Rockets' official website. "It's going to be a tough back-to-back but we need both games. We need go out there in Memphis and do a good job. We beat them the two times we played them, they'll be ready to play us too."

That hasn't necessarily been the case in the last seven games between the teams, as Houston has averaged 106.9 points while winning by an average of 15.5.

The Rockets have won three straight in Memphis, taking the last matchup there 127-111 on Dec. 3. Those three victories have come by 14.7 points a contest.

The Grizzlies, though, have played well against some of the Western Conference's top clubs this month, beating the Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City, Utah and Dallas. Memphis couldn't knock off another playoff contender Wednesday, falling 103-102 in overtime at New Orleans after leading by 15 in the second half.

"It was definitely one we should have had," forward Zach Randolph said after recording 17 points and 10 rebounds. "We don't know how to win games at the end."

Randolph is scoring 13.5 points per game against Houston this season - 6.5 below his season average - and will likely be matched up with Rockets center Chuck Hayes.

In the eight games Hayes missed from Dec. 31-Jan. 12 due to a sprained right ankle, Houston was outrebounded by an average of 5.3. In four contests since he's returned, the Rockets have grabbed 4.5 more boards per game than their opponents.

Memphis guards Mike Conley and Sam Young will face a tough challenge in defending counterparts Kyle Lowry and Kevin Martin, who have burned the Grizzlies this season.

Lowry had a career-high 28 points with 12 assists Dec. 3 and scored 17 with a career-best 18 assists in the second meeting.

Martin had 28 points in last month's game in Memphis, then scored 20 of his 34 in the first quarter Dec. 17.

Randolph's 29 points, 19 boards lead Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies finally ended a long, lopsided slide against the Houston Rockets by riding the inside play of Zach Randolph down the stretch.

Randolph had 29 points and 19 rebounds, Rudy Gay added 22 points, and the Grizzlies snapped a seven-game losing streak to Houston with a 115-110 victory over the Rockets on Friday night.

Randolph tallied 12 points in the fourth quarter, and the Grizzlies outscored Houston 10-2 in the final 2:26 to snap the Rockets' three-game winning streak.

"I had gotten it going, and they just kept feeding me," Randolph said. "I was trying to be aggressive and get to the basket and make shots. I wanted the ball every time in the clutch, and I had it going. I was feeling good out there."

Memphis guard Tony Allen even leaned on a "Little Shop of Horrors" reference to describe Randolph's play with the game on the line.

"They had to feed him," Allen said. "He just kept saying: 'Feed me, Seymour."'

Memphis had not defeated the Rockets since late in the 2008-09 season, and all the losses in the skid were by double digits.

"They had our number for last season and this season," Randolph said. "It definitely felt good to beat a team we've been struggling with."

Mike Conley finished with 17 points and O.J. Mayo added 13 for Memphis.

Randolph was 6 of 9 in the fourth quarter and had four rebounds, two on the offensive end.

"Zach made some amazing shots at the end," said Rockets guard Kevin Martin, who led Houston with 32 points. "We just could not keep him off the boards, and that was the game right there."

Luis Scola had 19 for Houston, while Shane Battier scored 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, and had eight rebounds.

Though Memphis leads the league with 17.1 forced turnovers per game, the Rockets only committed 13 miscues. But Rockets coach Rick Adelman said the Grizzlies' defense still was effective.

"They chop. They reach. You've got to be strong," Adelman said. "They're not going to get called for every foul, so you've got to be strong with the ball. That's what their reputation is. You've got to be smart out there because when they're down, they're going to be aggressive."

The Rockets led by as many as 11 in the first half, but the Grizzlies outscored them 57-43 in the second half, going inside to Randolph in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Marc Gasol scored inside with 1:18 left to give Memphis the lead for good at 109-108.

The Rockets scored 67 points in the first half, but the Grizzlies limited them to 32 percent shooting after intermission.

"I think this was truly a team-bonding win," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "They made a commitment to play harder, to compete harder, to run harder and to close out and do all the things it takes to win the game."

Martin had 19 points for Houston on 6-of-8 shooting, including both 3-point shots, as the Rockets shot just under 60 percent before halftime. Randolph had already reached a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis.

Conley scored 11 points in the third quarter to trim Houston's lead to 88-87.

"We couldn't stop a nosebleed tonight," Battier said, adding that a poor close to the third quarter started the Rockets' troubles. "We knew if we were up 10 that if we could get the game to 14 to 15, then we could have knocked it out.

"But we just could not deliver the knockout, and they clawed back into the game."

Notes: Allen was active after missing four games with a sore left knee and scored six points. Houston wore its alternate McRockets uniforms with the catsup-and-mustard color scheme. Houston entered the game 11-6 overall in the uniforms, but is now 0-3 this season. ... Martin has scored at least 28 points in 11 of his last 12 games against the Grizzlies. ... Randolph's double-double was the ninth consecutive time he's reached the plateau, tying a Memphis franchise record.

THE FACTS: After giving up 67 points in the first half, it appeared Memphis was headed toward yet another loss to the Houston Rockets. But after regrouping in the second half with some stingy defense, the Grizzlies managed to snap their seven-game losing streak to the Rockets, coming away with a 115-110 victory at FedExForum. Forward Zach Randolph led the way with 29 points and 19 rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "We got the ball to our scorers down the stretch. (Zach Randolph) wanted it today. Today, I called him `The Little Shop of Horrors.' They had to feed him. He just kept saying, `Feed me, Seymour.' So I called him, `Little Shop of Horrors.'

THE STAT: The Rockets started the game on fire from 3-point range, making four of their first five. But the game turned when Houston missed 14 of their next 18 from behind the arc, including two in the final 15 seconds.

TURNING POINT: In the first half, the Grizzlies not only gave up 67 points, but they allowed the Rockets to shoot 59.5 percent. Those easy looks at the basket became scarce in the second half as the Grizzlies clamped down and gave up just 43 points on 31.7 percent shooting.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: If Kevin Martin is playing the Grizzlies, it's probably a good idea to have him in your starting lineup. With his 32 points Friday night, Martin has now scored 28 or more points in 11 of the last 12 games he's played against Memphis. The first seven times were with the Sacramento Kings and he's now done it in four of the five since joining the Rockets.

QUOTABLE II: "I guess if you want to look at it like that, they were due for one. We could have won this game. We were in control the whole game until the end. You have to give them credit, they fought back. They battled. They made stops when they counted."

HOT: While Blake Griffin and Kevin Love garner attention for their double-doubles, Randolph quietly continues to put up monster numbers for the Grizzlies. Z-Bo tied a franchise record with his ninth straight double-double with team highs of 29 points and 19 rebounds. He was one board shy of his fifth 20-20 game this season. Randolph was nearly unstoppable in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 of the team's 28 points.

NOT: One key to the Rockets' dominance over the Grizzlies this season had been the play of starting point guard Kyle Lowry, who had torched former teammate Mike Conley, averaging 22.5 points and 15 assists in the first two games. This time around, Lowry was held to just five points on 2-of-8 shooting, although he did manage to have eight assists.

NOTABLE: With the win, the Grizzlies moved a half-game ahead of the Rockets in the Western Conference's Southwest Division as the two teams continue pushing for a run at a playoff spot. ... With a season high 72 points scored in the paint, the Grizzlies held a 72-46 advantage. In addition, they held a 39-29 advantage in bench scoring, a rarity for the Grizzlies. ... The win was just the third of the season in games the Grizzlies have allowed 100 or more points, leaving them 3-16. ...
