After defeating the two-time defending NBA champions to snap their longest skid of the season, the Dallas Mavericks need to maintain that momentum while trying to end another losing streak.

The Mavericks look to avoid a fifth consecutive road loss when they face the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night.

Dallas (27-14) snapped a six-game losing streak with Wednesday's 109-100 home win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

"We needed this one," forward Shawn Marion said

Despite losing nine of 12, the Mavericks are third in the Western Conference and hoping their latest victory will start a streak in the positive direction.

While Dirk Nowitzki had 14 points with eight rebounds in his third game back since missing nine with a knee injury, Marion and Jason Terry each scored 22 and Jason Kidd broke out for a season-high 21 with 10 assists. The Mavericks shot 55.0 percent while topping 100 points for the third time in 12 contests.

"We know what we are capable of doing night in and night out, but we have to bring it," Terry said. "Of late we've had some inconsistency and people going in and out of the lineup, but now we are going to be able to see what we have again once we are consistent with our lineup again."

Dallas averaged 89.8 points during the six-game skid. It's averaged 84.3 on 41.0 percent shooting during its current season-high four-game road losing streak.

The Mavericks, who lost 88-83 at home to the Bulls (28-14) on Nov. 19, have not lost five straight on the road since Feb. 5-March 5, 2009.

Dallas won 122-116 in its last visit to Chicago on March 6. Nowitzki scored 27 points in that contest, and 36 against the Bulls in November.

Though Kidd made 8 of 12 shots Wednesday after going 1 of 14 the previous two games, the veteran point guard has totaled 23 points on 8-of-25 shooting his last five versus Chicago.

Bulls All-Star Derrick Rose has averaged 33.0 points on 48.9 percent shooting over his last four home contests.

He hit that average Tuesday, but the Bulls had their eight-game home winning streak snapped with an 83-82 loss to Charlotte. Chicago's 39.0 percent shooting was a season low at the United Center.

Rose might be trying to carry too much of the scoring load while Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah remain out with injuries. Noah (14.0 points, 11.7 rebounds per game) is still a few weeks from returning from a thumb injury while Boozer (20.1 ppg, 10.1 rpg) is expected to miss a third straight game with a sprained ankle.

"We're missing some key players, but we still could have won (Tuesday's) game," said Rose, averaging 26.0 points on 53.1 percent shooting his last three games versus Dallas. "We've got to take it out on the next team."

Chicago may need Luol Deng (17.8 ppg) to bounce back after being held to 10 points on 2-of-11 shooting as the short-handed Bulls tried to win their fourth game in five nights.

"We can't think of fatigue," Deng told the Bulls' official website. "We're really trying not to. We feel we have a deep enough team. I don't want to make excuses."

Chicago has averaged 105.3 points while going 7-1 at home against teams from the Western Conference this season.

Rose scores 26 points as Bulls beat Mavs, 82-77

CHICAGO (AP) Derrick Rose didn't like the way the Chicago Bulls played against the Dallas Mavericks. He was just glad to get the win.

Rose scored 26 points on 9-for-28 shooting as the Bulls beat the Mavericks 82-77 on Thursday night in a physical, grinding game.

"A win is a win," Rose said. "Everything that went on in that game was kind of terrible, except the way we played defense."

Rose, shouldering a larger-than-usual share of the offensive load in the absence of injured forward Carlos Boozer, was just 5 for 20 in the second half as he tried to spark a sluggish Chicago attack.

"Coach (Tom Thibodeau) was mad because he didn't think I was shooting enough (in the first half)," Rose said. "So I just tried to be aggressive in the second half."

Dallas coach Rick Carlisle was pleased that the Mavericks made Rose work for his points.

"He scored a lot of points, but he had to take 28 shots to do it," Carlisle said. "Our guys worked hard."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 19 points to lead Dallas, while Jason Terry, Tyson Chandler and DeShawn Stevenson added 12 points apiece. Stevenson took all 10 of his shots from 3-point range, hitting four.

Nowitzki started his fourth straight game after missing more than two weeks with a knee injury.

"Just gotta get my legs under me and just work my way back into it," Nowitzki said. "It's probably gonna take a few more games but it's improving."

After Rose's pull-up jumper gave the Bulls an 80-77 lead with 55 seconds to go, Terry missed a tying 3-pointer with 15 seconds to play. Chicago's Kyle Korver then made two free throws to seal the win.

The Mavericks were coming off a win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night that snapped a six-game skid.

"After an emotional game last night, we thought we could come down the stretch and (win) in a one-possession game," Dallas' Jason Kidd. "We just couldn't knock down the shot at the end."

The Bulls tied the score at 66-all in the fourth quarter as Rose penetrated the lane in transition and hit a twisting, reverse layup.

After a timeout, Nowitzki missed a jumper and Chicago's C.J. Watson hit a 3-pointer from the corner to put the Bulls ahead. Watson added another 3 a couple of possessions later, pushing the Bulls' advantage to four points.

Dallas stayed close, but never led again.

"We'll take a win any way we can get it," Bulls center Kurt Thomas said. "The Mavericks are a great team."

The win pulled Chicago within one game of idle Miami for second place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Perhaps the most remarkable statistic in the game was the fact that the normally fast-paced Bulls did not score a single fastbreak point in the game.

"That's hard to believe with Derrick Rose on the team," Thomas said. "We wanted to limit the Mavericks' possessions because they have so many weapons on the floor."

Dallas scored the only two fastbreak points in the game, and those came late in the fourth quarter.

The Mavericks shot just 29.7 percent in the opening half were 4 for 19 from the field in the second quarter. Dallas opened the second half with a 20-8 run and held the Bulls to 12 points in the third quarter, seizing a 60-56 advantage heading into the fourth.

"When we got back in it, we did a nice job," Nowitzki said. "We didn't give up any second-chance points."

The Mavericks did allow the Bulls to grab 17 offensive rebounds, but Chicago scored just 14 points on those extra chances. Dallas scored 15 second-chance points in the game.

Foul trouble plagued the Bulls in the third quarter, with starting big men Taj Gibson and Thomas both picking up their fourth foul and finishing the period on the bench. That left it up to smaller players like Ronnie Brewer and Luol Deng to defend the seven-foot Nowitzki.

The Bulls played their third straight game without Boozer, who sprained his ankle in a win over Miami last Saturday. Gibson started again in Boozer's place and struggled, scoring four points on 2-for-7 shooting.

However, the Bulls still dominated the Mavericks in the paint, outscoring Dallas 28-16 in the lane and holding a 51-41 rebounding advantage.

Thomas, one of the league's oldest players, played 29 minutes and had nine points and 11 rebounds for Chicago. Korver also scored nine points as Rose was the only Bull to reach double figures in scoring.

Deng had seven points on 3-for-13 shooting, but led Chicago with 12 rebounds and contributed with solid defense on Nowitzki.

"That's what I love about Luol," Thibodeau said. "He can play effectively when he is not shooting well. He is always doing other things like tonight, rebounding the ball for us."

The Bulls catch a bit of a break, with a day off on Friday before a home game against Cleveland on Saturday. The Cavaliers are a league-worst 8-33 on the season and have lost 24 of 25 games.

Thibodeau said before the game that he expects Boozer to return to the lineup on Saturday. Chicago has won two of three without Boozer and is still a few weeks away from the return of injured center Joakim Noah, who had surgery on his right thumb.

THE FACTS: With neither team shooting better than 37 percent, the host Chicago Bulls outlasted the Dallas Mavericks 82-77. Derrick Rose was the only Bull in double figures with 26 points but shot only 9-for-28. Dirk Nowitzki, still seeming a bit hobbled from his recent knee injury, was 6-for-16 from the field for a team-high 19 points. The Bulls played their third consecutive game without forward Carlos Boozer, who is out with an ankle injury.

THE FACTS II: The Bulls outrebounded the Mavericks 51-41, and got 17 offensive rebounds. Kurt Thomas, starting at center in place of injured Joakim Noah, had 11 rebounds and nine points, six in the fourth quarter.

QUOTABLE: "I don't care how much defense you play, at some point you have to put the ball in the basket."

THE STAT: The Mavericks were shooting under 30 percent after one half, going 11-for-37 from the field.

THE STAT II: The Bulls got 30 points from their bench. Kyle Korver had nine points, Ronnie Brewer and C.J. Watson had eight, and Omer Asik had five points and seven rebounds.

TURNING POINT: When Terry, who has been a key fourth-quarter contributor for the Mavericks, missed a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left and the Bulls up by three, the Bulls got the rebound and were in command from there to the end.

HOT: Tyson Chandler was the only Dallas player to shoot 50 percent or better, going 5-for-9 from the field for 12 points. He also had 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.

NOT: Bulls forward Luol Deng, who ranks third in minutes played per game, appears to be tiring, and his shot shows it. He was 3-for-13 from the field, although he did provide 12 rebounds.

QUOTABLE II: "Derrick Rose is their team. I don't care who else they have on that roster. He took 28 shots tonight. Anybody who takes 28 shots, it's the Jordan rules."

GOOD MOVE: With the Bulls front line of Taj Gibson, Deng and Thomas in foul trouble most of the night, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau played Brewer and Watson with Rose for much of the second half.
