Jazz-Nets Preview

After a loss to one last-place team, the Utah Jazz will look to bounce back against another before beginning a tough stretch of their schedule.

The Jazz try to beat the struggling New Jersey Nets for a fifth consecutive time Wednesday night as they make the second stop on a five-game road trip.

Utah (27-14) fell 108-101 at Washington on Monday night as their three-game winning streak ended despite another impressive 3-point shooting display.

The Jazz made 14 of 27 from long distance, improving to 34 of 68 in their last three games, but allowed 66 points in the second half - the second-most by a Utah opponent all season.

"They came out and played better than us," said Deron Williams, who went 6 of 10 from 3-point range and finished with 28 points. "It looked like they wanted it a little bit more, like it meant a little bit more to them."

Williams, who has scored in double figures in a career-best 47 games, is averaging 26.0 points and 10.0 assists in his last three.

Al Jefferson also came through with a solid effort in the loss, scoring 25 points and recording 10 rebounds. He scored a career high-tying 40 points versus the Nets on Jan. 27, 2008, while with Minnesota.

C.J Miles, who had averaged 22.0 points in his previous two games, had eight Monday. The Jazz will likely look to get him more involved versus the Nets, as they are 13-1 when he scores more than 15 points.

Winning this contest could be vital for Utah, which will make stops in Boston and Philadelphia before concluding its trip next Tuesday with a matchup against the reigning NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. The Jazz host the NBA-leading San Antonio Spurs the following night.

The Jazz have won their last four matchups with New Jersey by an average of 17.5 points. They defeated the Nets 98-88 at home Nov. 17.

Losers of six straight and 11 of 12, the Nets (10-31) continue to falter amid continuing rumors of a possible trade for Denver Nuggets superstar Carmelo Anthony.

"It's not easy but it's also something that's out there," shooting guard Sasha Vujacic said following Monday's 109-100 loss at Golden State to complete an 0-4 road trip. "It's the business we're in. We just have to perform to our best level."

Brook Lopez added 20 points against the Warriors while Devin Harris, whose name has been mentioned as part of the potential Anthony deal, had 19 and eight assists.

"We just have to find something we can hang our hat on really go after it. But we're still searching" he said. "All these games were winnable for us at some point. We have to find a way to get over the top."

Lopez is averaging 29.0 points on 64.2-percent shooting over his last three games.

Nets snap 6-game slide after ending Melo-drama

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) The 'Melo-drama' ended and so did the New Jersey Nets' losing streak.

Hours after owner Mikhail Prokhorov halted the Nets' drawn-out pursuit of Carmelo Anthony and quelled fears that half the team would be traded, New Jersey matched its season high with seven players scoring in double figures in a 103-95 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.

"I'm relieved it's over," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "I'm relieved for our players, but I'm more relieved for (general manager) Billy (King). We can now just move on. We'll keep developing the players we have and keep improving. I liked what we did tonight. There was positive energy and no panic when they started to come back. For the first time in a long time, we closed a team out."

Brook Lopez scored 11 of his 20 points in a big third quarter, Sasha Vujacic added 15 and Devin Harris had 14 points and eight assists to help New Jersey win for only the second time in 13 games.

Travis Outlaw had 13 points and rookie forward Derrick Favors, the No. 3 pick in the draft who was mentioned prominently in the trade talks along with Harris, added 12 points and six rebounds.

Harris said the game was the Nets' best in a long time.

"We're going to have less distractions now and just puts our minds at ease," Harris said. "We can move forward and hopefully have more wins like this. We weren't exactly walking on egg shells, but with everyone talking about it, asking about it and writing about it, well, it does get annoying. It was a tough situation for all of us."

While the Nets were relaxing after the game, the Jazz were concerned after consecutive losses to Washington and New Jersey, two of the worst teams in the NBA.

"We look like we were lacking effort and our energy doesn't look good to me, even more so in the last couple of games," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "Just doesn't seem like great enthusiasm to play. I think we're better than we played, but give the Nets credit."

Al Jefferson had 21 points and eight rebounds and Deron Williams added 20 points and 10 assists for Utah.

The Nets seemingly took command in the third quarter with a 21-7 spurt that featured seven points by Lopez and six by Outlaw. A 3-pointer by Jordan Farmar, the fourth long-range shot in the run, stretched the lead to 71-57 late in the quarter.

Utah, which has rallied from a dozen double-digit deficits to win games this season, made a fourth-quarter run against the Nets, closing within 93-91 on a three-point play by Jefferson with 1:52 to play.

Lopez answered with a layup off Harris' feed at the 1:40 mark and Vujacic eventually stretched the margin to 97-91 with a layup with 30 seconds to go.

New Jersey iced the game at the free throw line.

"It's just another bad loss," Williams said. "What else can I say?"

The result was secondary to the pre-game drama.

After months of talks aimed at bringing Anthony from Denver to New Jersey, Prokhorov announced that the Nets were ending their prolonged trade talks with the Nuggets.

Prokhorov said the deal had become too public, taken too long and had hurt his team, so he pulled the plug on the proposed deal that featured as many as 15 players.

"Really, I am not happy with the way the deal has gone until now," said Prokhorov, who fielded questions in English and Russian. "It has taken too long. It has been played out in public. The uncertainty has taken a toll on the players ... and I believe it has cost us several games."

NOTES: Ravens running back Ray Rice, TV reality star Kim Kardashian and rap mogul Jay-Z were at the game. ... This was an evening of Russian culture, and NHL hockey players Ilya Kovalchuk, Alex Ovechkin and Varlamov Semen, Olympic gold medalist Kenny Krayzelburg (swimming) and Viktor Petrenko (figure skating) were on hand. ... Nets G Anthony Morrow, who has been sidelined since mid-December, expects to play Friday against Detroit.

THE FACTS: Led by seven players in double figures, the New Jersey Nets withstood a late push to down the Utah Jazz, 103-95, on Russian Night at Prudential Center. Deron Williams (20 points, 10 assists), Andrei Kirilenko (17 points, eight rebounds), and Al Jefferson (21 points, eight rebounds) put up good numbers in defeat. The victory occurred after the Nets Principal Owner, Mikhail Prokhorov, stated in a press conference that the team would no longer attempt to trade for Carmelo Anthony.

THE STAT: Jordan Farmar, Sasha Vujacic and Kris Humphries hopped off the bench to pitch in 38 points while attempting only 18 shots from the floor.

TURNING POINT: With the Nets up 95-91 and the Jazz threatening to make it a one-possession game, Harris stole the ball from Williams. Even though Harris' layup on the other end spilled out, the Jazz failed to mount a serious challenge the rest of the way.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Sasha Vujacic (4-5 from the floor, 11 points, six rebounds) continues to enjoy playing at the Prudential Center.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Kim Kardashian sat courtside and Jay-Z sat in his usual spot, a few seats down from the Nets bench...What must have been the Russian saying for "defense!" played over the loudspeakers occasionally when the Nets looked to clamp down... Hockey stars Alex Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk were in attendance...The NFL was also represented by Ray Rice of the Ravens and Drew Coleman of the Jets...A Russian dance centered around a person in a large bear costume took center stage between the first and second quarter...The Nets are now 4-1 in home games attended by Prokhorov.

ROOKIE WATCH: Derrick Favors (12 points, 5-6 from the floor, six rebounds, three blocks, only one foul, and countless other positives) may have played the finest game of his young career, responding well to Avery Johnson's call for "crazy energy."

NOTABLE: The Jazz jumped out to a 14-6 lead to start the game. The Nets responded with a 21-5 run to close out the quarter...In the fourth quarter, Johnson went with a mobile lineup that didn't boast a true center, featuring Favors and Humphries as the two bigs.
