Suns-Cavaliers Preview

The Phoenix Suns, all but written off as a potential factor in the Western Conference playoff race a week ago, suddenly have reason to believe they can make a postseason push after three straight victories.

That optimism might disappear if they can't make it four.

Phoenix continues its five-game eastern road trip Wednesday in Cleveland, where the woebegone Cavaliers return from their own five-game nightmare looking to avoid a 14th consecutive loss.

The Suns (18-21) already made one major trade this season designed to shed salary with the Vince Carter deal, and during a 4-12 stretch from Dec. 7-Jan. 11, speculation picked up over whether they were considering trading two-time MVP Steve Nash.

They're still 2 1/2 games behind Portland for the West's No. 8 playoff seed, but over the past week, they've looked capable of jumping back in the postseason picture. Nash had 23 points apiece in back-to-back home wins over New Jersey and Portland, then Carter scored 29 in a 129-121 road win Monday over New York - the same team that beat them by 25 just 10 days earlier.

"I am not sure we fixed anything," Nash said. "We are just competing more and not dropping our heads when things go our way. We are finding a way to fight."

Phoenix has certainly found a way to fix an offense that became stagnant during a stretch of six games where it hit triple digits just once. The Suns are shooting 49.8 percent - 47.5 percent from 3-point range - and averaging 120.7 points during their three-game winning streak, tied for their longest this season.

They're 11-2 if they score more than 110 points and just 7-19 otherwise.

"I know that thing about defense wins championships, but I still haven't seen a team yet win a game 0-0," coach Alvin Gentry said. "You've got to be able to make shots and put it in the basket."

Twenty turnovers hurt Phoenix's offense when the Cavaliers (8-32) visited Jan. 9, but the Suns made 13 of 28 3-pointers - including five from Jared Dudley - in a 108-100 victory.

Cleveland watched all five teams during its road trip make at least 10 3-pointers. No team since 1986-87 has allowed six consecutive opponents to make 10 or more shots from beyond the arc.

In the final three games of its road trip, Cleveland lost by a franchise-worst 55 points against the Lakers, gave up 70 first-half points in a 22-point loss at Utah, then allowed Denver to score 80 in the opening 24 minutes of Saturday's 127-99 defeat.

The Cavaliers, who have lost 23 of 24, surrendered an average of 116.8 points on the trip.

"It's tough anytime you lose, but that is why we are professionals," guard Ramon Sessions said. "You have to show up to work every day, continue to work hard and go out there and give it all you got."

Though forward Anderson Varejao will undergo season-ending ankle surgery this week, the Cavaliers have some good news on the injury front. Guard Daniel Gibson should return from an ankle injury that kept him from traveling on the road trip.

Mo Williams, who hurt his hip at Denver, likely will miss Wednesday's game.

That's good news for Phoenix. Williams averaged 27.3 points in Cleveland's four straight victories in the series prior to the loss earlier this month.

Hill, Nash push Suns past hapless Cavs

CLEVELAND (AP) The Suns' old man has lost a step, maybe two. But don't let his age fool you.

Grant Hill can still run with the boys.

The 38-year-old scored 27 points, Steve Nash added 15 and 15 assists and the Phoenix Suns won their fourth straight, 106-98 on Wednesday night over the fallen-to-the-bottom Cleveland Cavaliers, who have lost 14 in a row and 24 of their last 25.

Hill followed a 25-point performance in a win at New York on Monday by adding 12 rebounds, finishing 10 of 18 from the field and making all seven free throws in 41 minutes. Not too bad for a guy who has been written off more than once during a 15-year NBA career.

He recently missed two games with a sore knee and ankle, and joked that he wouldn't mind playing a less grueling schedule somewhere.

"Maybe if there's a lockout, I can play in Europe once a week," he cracked. "I might be able to excel over there."

He's still doing fine over here.

Vince Carter scored just three points for Phoenix, but they came on a huge 3-pointer from the corner with 2:35 left as the Suns, who led by 17 in the third quarter, were barely holding off a furious comeback by the Cavs. Cleveland was only down by five when Carter knocked down the game's biggest shot.

"I'm going to shoot the ball when I'm open," said Carter, who had a season-high 29 in the win over the Knicks. "It doesn't matter either way. I had the shot in the corner and I was going to take it."

Antawn Jamison scored 23 and J.J. Hickson had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Cleveland, winless since Dec. 18 and now an NBA worst 8-33. The Cavs were at least more competitive than during a just completed five-game road trip, when they lost by an average of 26.2 points.

"Something to build on," Jamison said. "But there's no doubt that this is tough."

The Suns, coming off an impressive start to a five-game road trip, came to the right place to keep things going.

Quicken Loans Arena has changed and so have the Cavs, who have rapidly plunged from elite status. Their 14-game slide is the league's longest since Washington lost 16 in a row last March. Cleveland is the first team to post a 1-24 stretch since Miami in 2008, according to STATS LLC, and the Cavs could become the first team to have the league's worst record one season after having its best.

Phoenix led by 13 entering the fourth but fell flat. The Cavs raised their defensive intensity and closed to 93-90 on Jamario Moon's 3-pointer with 6:25 remaining. But Hill hit a clutch jumper just before the 24-second clock expired and Nash's basket made it 97-90.

After Hickson made two free throws, Carter, who missed his first five shots and was unusually passive on offense, drained his 3 to put the Suns ahead 100-92. Nash then put the Cavs away with two free throws and a bucket in the final 2:10.

"Vince certainly hit a big one when we needed one," said Hill, who believes the Suns are beginning to come together following the trade that brought them Carter, Marcin Gortat and Mickael Pietrus from Orlando. "I'm starting to get more comfortable with the new guys and my role."

Channing Frye added 18 points and Gortat matched a career high with 16 for the Suns.

Ramon Sessions scored 19 and Daniel Gibson, back after missing five games with an ankle injury, added 16 - 12 on 3-pointers - for Cleveland.

Their roster ravaged by injuries, the Cavs got more bad news when they learned starting guard Mo Williams will be sidelined indefinitely with a lingering hip injury. Williams received a cortisone shot and doctors have recommended extended rest.

The team did not put an official timeline on his return. Williams said he'll be out at least "a couple weeks" but will not need surgery. That's one positive for the Cavs, who will play the remainder of the season without center Anderson Varejao (torn ankle tendon) and are still missing guards Anthony Parker (back) and Christian Eyenga (ankle) along with forwards Leon Powe (knee surgery) and Joey Graham (leg).

"We've got a lot of young guys out there," Sessions said. "We just have to build on it. We're professionals and we just have to keep working."

Notes: Cleveland hosts Milwaukee on Friday. The team record for consecutive losses is 19. ... At this point in 2010, the Cavs were 31-11. ... Gibson was lucky to escape injury after crashing hard into the padded basket stanchion while defending Hill on a breakaway.

Suns-Cavs notebook

THE FACTS: Just when it seemed as if everyone was ready to write off the Phoenix Suns, they have a night like this. Actually, the Suns were far from great in Wednesday's 106-98 win at Cleveland -- but it was good enough, and more than anything, they made easy to believe the big picture is looking brighter. Grant Hill scored 27 points, Steve Nash had 15 points and 15 assists, and the Suns (19-21) won their fourth in a row, including three straight on the road. They also held off a couple of late charges by the Cavaliers (8-33), offering more evidence that the Suns are coming together at a pretty good time.

QUOTABLE: "Knowing [Cavs coach] Byron [Scott] the way I know Byron, every time you take a breather his guys will get back in the game. And that is a real testament to Byron."

THE STAT: 95.2 percent. That is what the Suns (20-for-21) shot from the free-throw line, an underrated reason why they were able to thwart every Cavaliers run. Hill went 7-for-7, Nash went 5-for-5 and Marcin Gortat (16 points off the bench) went 4-for-4.

TURNING POINT: Suns guard Vince Carter only made one basket, but it was perhaps the game's most important. It came with the Suns holding a 96-92 lead and 2:35 left in the game. Carter freed himself for an open look behind the 3-point arc in the left corner, and Nash (who else?) quickly hit him with a pass. Carter buried the shot and the Suns never led by less than six again. "We were struggling at the time," Gentry said. "So it was a big one."

HOT: Hill went 10-for-18 from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds. The 38-year old forward is averaging 24.3 points in the last three games. ... Suns big man Channing Frye finished with 18 points and four boards. ... Cavs power forward J.J. Hickson started at center, scoring 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

NOT: The Cavs have lost 24 of 25 following a 7-9 start. That includes their six-game losing streak at home.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Gortat seems to be finding himself with his new team and is definitely worth a fantasy look. For the Cavs, guard Ramon Sessions (19 points, eight assists) continues to put up pretty good numbers.

ROOKIE WATCH: Cavs shooting guard Manny Harris received another start, finishing with 10 points on 3-for-6 shooting and staying active on defense.

NOTABLE: Phoenix is 8-19 when failing to score 110 points, but two of those wins have come against Cleveland. The Suns are 11-2 when they score 110 or more. ... The Cavs snapped a string of five straight games of allowing opponents to make at least 10 threes (the Suns were 6-for-19). The last time a team allowed six straight opponents to make at least 10 threes: 1986-87. ... The Cavs were without Mo Williams, who re-injured his hip last week in Denver. He said he could be out "for a while." The team said there is no timetable for his return.
