Nets-Warriors Preview

The Golden State Warriors have seen signs of improvement over the last few weeks and they like their chances of continuing that during a favorable upcoming stretch in their schedule.

The Warriors will try to win their sixth straight over the New Jersey Nets on Monday as they continue a five-game homestand.

Golden State (16-23) is in 12th place in the Western Conference, but has been pleased with some promising results recently. The Warriors have won three of five and seven of 12, including a 122-112 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

They have a good chance to build some momentum with New Jersey, Indiana and Sacramento still left to play on this current homestand before another eight-game stretch at home following their visit to the Clippers on Saturday.

All three remaining opponents on this homestand have losing records with the Nets (10-30) and Kings (9-29) at or near the bottom of their respective conferences. Golden State is 10-7 at home.

"The next week and a half will really tell our season," leading scorer Monta Ellis said. "Being in the West, we can't fall back two games. Two games is like four or five in the West."

Ellis has been particularly impressive recently. He scored 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting against the Clippers after finishing with 38 two nights earlier against the Los Angeles Lakers. He's averaging 28.4 points and shooting 48.1 percent from 3-point range the last five games.

Ellis and the Warriors will look to send the Nets to their sixth straight loss. New Jersey has also lost eight in a row and 18 of 19 on the road, falling 96-89 at Portland on Saturday.

Brook Lopez scored 32 points and the Nets were ahead by as many as 13 points in the first half, but committed nine of their 13 turnovers after the break and Lopez was held to two points in the fourth quarter.

Lopez scored 35 points in the loss to the Lakers, giving him back-to-back 30-point games for the first time.

"They were doubling me far out, so we tried to swing the ball," Lopez said. "We had some good looks ... otherwise we made turnovers. The turnovers were really the story."

Second-leading scorer Devin Harris had another rough performance after scoring six points the night before against the Lakers. He finished with eight against the Blazers, including four in the opening quarter.

Harris is averaging 16 points, but amid trade rumors that he could be headed to Denver as part of the deal for Carmelo Anthony, he has been held to nearly half that over the last four games.

Monday ends a four-game road trip for the Nets, who are 3-20 away from home.

"We've got to fight through the mental and physical fatigue on the road if we want to be a good team," coach Avery Johnson said.

The Warriors have won five straight against the Nets overall and at home. New Jersey's last win in the series came Dec. 22, 2007.

Warriors beat Nets for 6th straight time, 109-100

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) By protecting the ball the Golden State Warriors made sure they protected the home court once again in this key stretch they hope will turn their season around.

Monta Ellis had 26 points and nine assists, and the Warriors committed a season-low six turnovers to beat the New Jersey Nets for the sixth straight time, 109-100 on Monday.

"If you take care of the ball you give yourself a chance to win," coach Keith Smart said. "It compensates for some other things you don't have, maybe on the offensive glass. But if you are taking care of the basketball, you don't give them opportunities to run out in transition to where you can't get back and defend."

David Lee added 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, who have won two of their first three games in a key stretch to the season that features 13 of 14 games at home.

The six turnovers were one off the low in the NBA for any team this season and 10 fewer than New Jersey committed. The 14-point advantage in points off turnovers proved to be key against the Nets.

"It was a slowdown tempo game so you're going to have less possessions and less shots and you want to get a good shot on each possession you have on offense," point guard Stephen Curry said. "You don't want to give them the ball and let them have run-outs and easy baskets and get the momentum."

The Warriors did not trail for the final 46 minutes of the game to knock off the Nets once again.

Brook Lopez scored 20 points and Devin Harris added 19 for New Jersey, which has have lost six straight and 11 of 12 games.

"We just have to find something we can hang our hat on really go after it. But we're still searching," Harris said. "All these games were winnable for us at some point. We have to find a way to get over the top."

The Nets are in a tumultuous stretch, with many of their players linked to a possible three-team trade that would bring All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony from Denver to New Jersey.

A possible deal has been hanging over the Nets for weeks, with reports Sunday that the team has been granted permission to meet with Anthony to try to persuade him to accept a three-year, $65 million extension, which could pave the way for the deal to be finalized. Coach Avery Johnson said before the game he had no knowledge of any meeting.

"It's not easy but it's also something that's out there," guard Sasha Vujacic said. "It's the business we're in. We just have to perform to our best level."

The latest loss completed an 0-4 road trip for the Nets, who stayed close but never were able to seriously threaten the Warriors. Golden State led by eight early in the fourth quarter before Reggie Williams hit a jumper and then made a steal that set up a three-point play for Ellis that made it 95-82 with 7:38 to go.

The Nets responded with seven straight points, but Ellis hit a couple of baskets to help build the lead back up to 10. The Nets closed back within five before Stephen Curry hit a 3-pointer with 1:57 remaining to keep the Warriors in control.

Curry struggled for much of the night offensively as he was limited by foul trouble, shooting just 4 for 10 from the field. But he scored eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win. Williams picked up some of Curry's slack by scoring 12 points off the bench.

"We expect that night in and night out from him," Curry said. "He made some big shots. In the fourth quarter, he always comes out and makes a big shot for us, especially when we really need it."

The Nets trailed by 11 early in the third quarter before Lopez made two baskets during an 8-0 run. The game stayed close for the rest of the quarter with Acie Law's two free throws in the closing seconds giving Golden State a 79-73 lead heading into the fourth.

Lee scored 14 first-half points to help Golden State get off to a solid start against the Nets. Ellis made a pull-up jumper with 25 seconds left in the half to give the Warriors a 54-46 lead at the break. Harris missed a jumper just before the buzzer for New Jersey.

NOTES: The Warriors had a rare afternoon home game as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. ... Lopez has scored 87 points in his last three games. ... New Jersey rookie F Derrick Favors had zero points on 0-for-3 shooting in 19 minutes. ... Golden State had a season-high 10 blocked shots, including three for Andris Biedrins. ... G Anthony Morrow, who was traded from Golden State to New Jersey in July, did not play because of a strained right hamstring.

THE FACTS: Monta Ellis scored 26 points with nine assists, five rebounds and three steals as the Golden State Warriors won for the eighth time in their last 13 games, beating the New Jersey Nets 109-100 Monday afternoon. David Lee added 24 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for the Warriors. Brook Lopez had 20 points and seven rebounds as the Nets dropped to 1-19 in their last 20 road contests.

THE STAT: 6. The Warriors, who came in ranked 26th in the league with an average of 15.59 turnovers per game, carved nearly 10 miscues off that mark on Monday, turning the ball over a season-low six times, leading to 12 points. At the other end of the floor, Golden State forced 16 turnovers by the Nets, and generated 26 points off those.

QUOTABLE: "That's one of the things we spent pretty much 30 minutes on before the game -- looking at their defense, talking to our team about taking care of the ball, and how the ball has to be a prized possession. We just didn't do it."

TURNING POINT: The Nets were within four points early in the fourth quarter when the Warriors turned up the heat defensively to create a 16-7 run that put them up 13 with 7:38 remaining. New Jersey coughed the ball up three times in that stretch.

GOOD MOVE: For the second game running, Warriors coach Keith Smart used reserve scorer Reggie Williams down the stretch to secure a victory. Friday, Williams replaced Stephen Curry for defensive purposes. Monday, he stayed on the floor in place of Dorell Wright, having performed so ably that Smart simply couldn't take him off the floor. Williams, who played the final 14:06, finished with 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting and four rebounds.

QUOTABLE II: "Early in the year, when the bench was complaining about not playing -- well, now they're playing and they're playing well. That's what I was trying to get across to them, that you have to be productive when you come in off the bench."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Sasha Vujacic continued to fill it up for the Nets, scoring 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting. He's now averaging 12.1 points in 15 games since coming to New Jersey from the Lakers.

HOT: Stephen Curry scored eight points in the fourth quarter to salvage what had to that point been an eminently forgettable game for the Warriors' second-year point guard.

ROOKIE WATCH: Nets power forward Derrick Favors looked every bit the youngest player in the league while going 0-for-3 with two turnovers in 19 minutes. He did have seven rebounds, at least.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Overly optimistic Oracle Arena faithful continued their recent trend of chanting "M-V-P!" while Ellis -- who has yet to make an All-Star roster, let alone compete for Most Valuable status -- was at the free-throw line.

NOTABLE: Johnson said he'd heard nothing to confirm reports his club has received permission to talk to Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony about a contract extension that could pave a trade from Denver to Newark. "I had a conversation with Billy (King, the Nets' general manager) yesterday, and I have not heard that," Johnson said. "You guys always have something new every day. ... You'll see the same team again on Wednesday. I guess we were supposed to have a new team on Wednesday, but that didn't happen." ... The Nets' Kris Humphries recorded an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double in just 22 minutes off the bench. ... Much-maligned center Johan Petro scored a season-high eight points for New Jersey. ... Golden State has won six straight against New Jersey in Oakland. ... The Warriors' 10 blocks -- including a season-high three from recently rejuvenated Andris Biedrins -- are the team's most since recording 11 against Chicago on Jan. 18, 2010.
