Bobcats-76ers Preview

After producing their best win streak under interim coach Paul Silas, the Charlotte Bobcats were frustrated by two of the league's better defenses.

The Bobcats could have an easier time scoring Monday in Philadelphia but might have more concerns with stopping the 76ers' resurgent offense.

Charlotte is 6-4 since Silas took over for Larry Brown on Dec. 22 and had won a season-high four straight before falling 99-94 at Boston on Friday night. The next evening, the Bobcats (15-23) lost 88-81 at home to New Orleans.

Charlotte shot 40.6 percent against the Hornets, who are giving up 92.2 points per game this season - only slightly little more than the Celtics (92.0). Tyrus Thomas was ejected after elbowing New Orleans center Emeka Okafor, and leading scorer Stephen Jackson picked up his first technical foul in a month during a 5-for-15 shooting performance.

"There's just too much nonsense going on out there as far as going after the referees and all that kind of thing," Silas said. "It's like I told the players, 'You didn't see (New Orleans) going after the referees.'

"Why? Because they understand, 'My job is to go out and play the game and concentrate on those particular things.' We just aren't there yet."

Thomas was given a one-game suspension by the league Monday and will miss this game.

Charlotte has won seven of 10 over the 76ers (16-23) and split its past four games in Philadelphia after losing seven of its first eight there.

The Bobcats, though, will have to contend with a 76ers team that's averaging 104.2 points in its last five games - 8.2 more than in its previous 34. Charlotte had trouble stopping Philadelphia in a 109-91 road loss Dec. 4.

The 76ers, who shot 51.9 percent in that win, scored over 100 points in consecutive defeats to sub-.500 Detroit and Indiana, but Louis Williams scored 25 points to hold on for a 95-94 win over visiting Milwaukee on Friday night.

"We could have been close to .500," forward Elton Brand said. "But we got this one."

Williams, averaging 19.4 points in his last five games, hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 43 seconds left. Andre Iguodala also had 15 points after scoring one on 0-of-7 shooting in his return from a sore Achilles' tendon, and Philadelphia shot a season-high 57.1 percent.

"Lou makes us a different team when he's playing well and with Iguodala back, it gets us a lot of options," coach Doug Collins said.

Iguodala also had 15 points in the win over Charlotte in November, part of the 76ers' current 10-3 stretch at home. Jodie Meeks scored a career-high 26 and Thaddeus Young added 20 off the bench to help Philadelphia snap a three-game slide to the Bobcats.

The 76ers are 9-3 at home all-time against Charlotte but trail 12-11 in the series.

Iguodala lifts 76ers past Bobcats 96-92 in OT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Lou Williams saved the 76ers in regulation. Andre Iguodala sent them home winners in overtime.

The Sixers are already talking about the playoffs, and holding off a Charlotte team nipping at their heels in the standings is a big step toward playing meaningful games in April.

Iguodala hit the go-ahead jumper with 37.6 seconds left in overtime, Thaddeus Young followed with a game-saving steal and the Sixers beat the Bobcats 96-92 on Monday.

"It's mid-January and we're thinking playoffs," forward Elton Brand said.

Iguodala's pull-up jumper eased the sting of blowing a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter. Kwame Brown's errant cross-court pass was intercepted by Young, and Evan Turner hit four free throws in the final 17 seconds for the Sixers.

Williams set up the heroics.

Williams, who led the Sixers with 23 points, sent the game into OT after he hit a 3 with 4.7 seconds left to make it 86-86.

"Just huge," Brand said.

Iguodala had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Brand added 13 points and 13 rebounds.

It's never too early to start thinking about the postseason, especially for a team that was one of the worst in the NBA last season. The win put them 1 1/2 games ahead of Charlotte for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Boris Diaw had a triple-double for the Bobcats with 25 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds.

For a spell in the fourth, the Bobcats looked poised to snatch the win.

Diaw and Stephen Jackson hit 3s in a 13-0 run that tied the game at 81. Gerald Wallace put the Bobcats ahead 84-81 when he buried an uncontested 3 with 2:06 left in the game and had the Sixers on the brink of completing another fourth quarter meltdown.

Williams wouldn't let them go down that easy.

Williams took the screen pass, pump-faked D.J. Augustin, and hit the tying 3 that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

"I sure like the fight in my team, I really do," Collins said.

Williams apologized to the team after a Jan. 8 loss at Detroit because he missed two free throws late in regulation that could have helped the Sixers win. Detroit's Austin Daye hit a tying 3 and the Pistons went on to win in overtime.

"I really took that one hard," Williams said. "I just said, I apologize. I lost this one but I'm going to help us win more than I help lose."

Williams followed the apology with a go-ahead 3-pointer with 43 seconds left to beat Milwaukee on Friday. That marked the Sixers' first win in games decided by four points or fewer. Now, they have their first OT victory in four tries.

"It's a sign of growth," Brand said. "Winning them in the crunch, grind-it-out games, it bodes well for our confidence."

Jackson, who scored 15 points, missed the final shot and the game went into OT.

Brown had season highs with 15 points and 16 rebounds.

"We're fighting hard to stay in games and we're not just giving up," Bobcats coach Paul Silas said. "We'll get there. We'll learn and we'll get there."

The big swing for the Bobcats came late in the fourth when Brand was whistled for a flagrant foul on Brown's basket. Brown hit the free throw, the Bobcats kept possession and Diaw hit a 3 - a six-point streak thanks to one foul that sliced the lead. Jackson's 3 capped the 13-0 run and tied the game at 81.

The Bobcats made up for missing all 10 3-point attempts in the first half by finding their groove to open the third. Diaw hit two and Wallace one during a 13-2 run that put the Bobcats up 10.

"That's what we do a lot of times on this team," Brown said. "We've just got to get it going."

When the run ended, so did Charlotte's shooting touch.

The Bobcats missed their last 11 shots of the quarter and went the final 9:09 without a field goal.

Williams, again sparking the Sixers off the bench, scored eight points during a 10-0 run late in the third quarter that helped them build the big lead.

The Sixers have won 11 of their last 14 home games while the Bobcats dropped to 4-14 overall on the road. The Sixers' 12 home wins are as many as they had all last season.

"We're just playing as a unit all the way around," Brand said.

Notes: Bobcats F Tyrus Thomas was suspended without pay for a flagrant foul against the Hornets' Emeka Okafor. Thomas elbowed Okafor in the head and was ejected for a flagrant foul, penalty two, late in the Bobcats' 88-81 loss Saturday. ... 76ers F Andres Nocioni sat out for the Sixers with a dislocated right middle finger. There is no timetable for his return.

Sixers-Bobcats notebook

THE FACTS: Lou Williams sparked the 76ers once again off the bench with a sensational 23-point effort in a 96-92 overtime victory over the feisty Charlotte Bobcats on Monday. He also knocked down a humongous 3-pointer from the baseline with 4.7 seconds remaining to help force the extra five minutes. In overtime, Andre Iguodala made a 19-foot jumper with 37.6 seconds left to snap a tie game at 90. When it was over, the Sixers registered their 12th home win, equaling the amount of home wins they managed all of last season. Iguodala finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds (all defensive) while Elton Brand had 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots. Boris Diaw played a stellar game for the Bobcats en route to his sixth career triple-double -- the previous five came with the Phoenix Suns -- consisting of 25 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Kwame Brown picked up season-highs with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Charlotte fell to 4-14 on the road and 1-11 in its last 12.

THE STAT: Charlotte's 12 first-half offensive rebounds were the most against the Sixers in any half this season.

TURNING POINT: With the score tied at 90-90, Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace each missed wide-open 3-pointers and the Sixers pulled away for the hard-fought win. If one of those treys goes down, it's possibly a different story.

HOT: Brown was terrific for the Bobcats. He posted up well, knocked down the medium-range jumper and grabbed offensive rebounds. If he plays like this every night, the Bobcats will be a much tougher team.

NOT: Thaddeus Young shot just 4-for-16 and even missed five of his six free throw attempts.

QUOTABLE II: "It's a huge win for us. Earlier in the season, we might not have won this game. I think a win like this can only help our confidence as a team."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Diaw filled up the stat sheet with the second career triple-double in Bobcats history. Jackson owns the other one.

INSIDE THE ARENA: There was a large throng of children at the game, thanks to a 2:00 p.m. start on Martin Luther King Day. It's nice for the younger kids to be able to enjoy a matinee start, and they made their voices heard with cheers throughout the game.

GOOD MOVE: The Sixers forced Jackson to beat them from the outside, not exactly his strong suit. Jackson misfired on his first seven 3-pointers and didn't get to the basket with any consistency. Jackson was 7-for-24 and 1-for-11 from beyond the arc.

BAD MOVE: The Bobcats jumped out to a 10-point lead in the third thanks to a spark from Diaw. For some reason, Diaw went out after they built a lead and the Sixers went on to take a six-point advantage after the quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH: Evan Turner, the Sixers' No. 2 overall pick from Ohio State, had six points and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes. Turner was extremely active on offense and defense the entire game. He also made four clutch free throws in the final 16.8 seconds in overtime to secure the victory.

OOPS: During the pregame introductions, Bobcats interim coach Paul Silas was announced. But the video scoreboard displayed a picture of Larry Brown.

NOTABLE: The Sixers players taped tributes to Martin Luther King, which aired throughout the game. It was a very nice touch on such a monumental day.
