Heat-Bulls Preview

Despite the Chicago Bulls' best efforts over the summer, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh will only be coming to the United Center as visitors this season.

On Saturday night, Miami's superstar trio will make its first trip to Chicago since all three turned down offers to play with the Bulls, as the Heat look to avoid matching a season-high three-game losing streak.

Chicago had the salary cap room to bring in two of last summer's top free agents, but ultimately the team was spurned by Wade, James and Bosh in favor of uniting in Miami.

Of the three, the player Bulls fans may be particularly bitter toward is Wade. The Chicago native teased the hometown fans with two meetings with Bulls management during the summer talks.

"A little different," Wade said when asked about the reaction he expects from the Chicago fans. "I don't know what to expect but it really doesn't matter to me. My family will be rooting for me and that's all that matters."

Wade, James and Bosh have been accustomed to boos on the road this season, but it certainly hasn't affected the team, which won 13 straight away from home before consecutive losses this week.

Miami (30-11) is trying to close its five-game road trip on a high note after defeats on back-to-back nights against the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver.

The Heat fell 130-102 to the Nuggets on Thursday. Bosh scored 24 points and Wade added 16, but James sat out after spraining his left ankle the night before against the Clippers, while Miami allowed the most points it has all season.

The Heat, who gave up 111 to the Clippers the night before, are averaging 93.6 points allowed.

Miami is optimistic James will play Saturday. He is averaging 29.2 points against the Bulls over his career, his second-highest average against Eastern Conference opponents he's faced more than twice. He is also scoring 31.4 points per game in Chicago.

The Heat haven't lost three in a row since Nov. 20-24. They've won seven of their last nine against Chicago.

"I think we'll respond to these two (losses)," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "The competitive nature will come out. It'll be a big-game feel in Chicago."

The Bulls (26-13) haven't exactly struggled despite failing to land one of those three coveted free agents. Chicago, which ended up adding Carlos Boozer, is leading the Central Division by nine games and has won 17 of 22, including seven straight at home.

The Bulls bounced back from Wednesday's 96-91 loss at Charlotte with a 99-86 victory at Indiana on Friday. It was the third time in four games they held an opponent to fewer than 90 points, and Chicago limited Indiana to 32.6 percent shooting.

"We were just ready tonight," said Boozer, who had 14 points. "We did a good job of focusing on what they do offensively. I thought we did a good job defensively and made them take tough shots, contested shots."

Derrick Rose had 29 points and 10 rebounds, scoring 20 points in the second half. Rose is averaging 27.6 points the last five games.

However, Rose has struggled over his career against Miami, averaging 14.9 points in seven meetings while shooting 37.3 percent. In the last four, he's been held to 12 or fewer points three times.

Chicago is looking to win eight straight games at the United Center for the first time since Jan. 7-27, 2005. The Bulls are holding opponents to an average of 82.4 points during the current streak there.

Bulls beat Heat behind Rose with James sitting out

CHICAGO (AP) LeBron James sat on the end of the bench, watching intently and working on his gum while he rested his sore ankle. Chris Bosh limped off, tried to return and then went for X-rays after hurting his ankle in the third quarter.

Down to one star instead of three, the Miami Heat turned to Dwyane Wade and he responded Saturday night. It just wasn't enough to keep the Heat from their third straight loss because Derrick Rose was just as tough for the Chicago Bulls.

Rose had 34 points to Wade's 33 and after the two Chicago natives and stars had an old-fashioned shootout in the final 2 minutes, the Bulls prevailed 99-96 when Kyle Korver retrieved a loose ball and hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left.

"Both of us do our best to lead our teams. I try to do the same thing. When my team looks down and out, I try to lead them back," Wade said. "In the fourth I got my body going and with the guys out there I just tried to win the game. ... We were one rebound away from having an opportunity to steal the game."

Wade had 12 points in the fourth quarter, including three straight 3-pointers to give the Heat the lead.

"You can't do anything about that when somebody is jumping at a player and he's fading away and hitting 3s," Rose said. "You got to chalk it up. ... In the NBA that's the type of shot you want people to take and he was making them tonight. He's a tough player."

Bosh added 17 points, 11 in the third quarter, but hurt his ankle in the closing seconds of the period when he went to the floor during a scramble for the ball. He returned to the game in the fourth but played only briefly before leaving the game as Miami forged through the final period without two of its stars. X-rays were negative.

"I couldn't push off it. I thought I could at first," Bosh said. "As bad as I wanted to play, you have to keep the big picture in mind. I was finally getting a rhythm. I can't wait to play these guys again."

Rose had 11 in the final quarter as he and Wade matched shots in a wild finish that resembled a playoff game.

Carlos Boozer had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Chicago. Eddie House scored 13 for the Heat, who had to rely on its bench.

It was a Rose vs. Wade showdown over the final 2 minutes.

Rose drove for a basket, Wade answered with a 3-pointer and then Rose converted a three-point play after hanging in the air for a jumper around Mario Chalmers to put the Bulls up 94-90.

But Wade hit yet another 3 with 1:07 to go and after a Bulls turnover, Wade connected again from long distance and the Heat had a 96-95 lead with 37 seconds remaining.

Rose missed from inside but after a missed tip by Boozer, Korver came up with the loose ball and sank his 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to put Chicago ahead 98-96.

"At first I thought I had to get back on D, but there was a loose ball and I went after it," Korver said. "Everyone else was flying the other way. The ball came to me and I was wide open."

After Wade nearly lost the ball in the lane, the Heat retrieved it and Chalmers missed a 3-pointer from the key and Chicago's Ronnie Brewer rebounded with 4.4 seconds to go.

Brewer missed the first and made the second of two free throws before Wade's jumper was off with just under a second left.

Rose sliced through four defenders for a twisting layup to cap a startling 17-0 run opening the second half that gave the Bulls a 65-53 lead. He also sank back-to-back 3-pointers early in the quarter and fed Keith Bogans for another as the Bulls appeared ready to run away.

Chicago had trailed by five at the half after blowing a 14-point lead as Wade scored 21 first-half points. But during the 17-point outburst, Wade - booed loudly by fans in his hometown when introduced - picked up his third and fourth fouls and suddenly the Heat were without two of their two biggest stars as he joined a gum-chewing James on the bench.

But Bosh brought the Heat back with 11 points as Miami rallied to tie it at 67 late in the period.

James went through some pregame shooting, even a couple of dunks, to test the ankle but then sat out his second straight game.

The Bulls made their pitch last summer to the two-time MVP and also met with Wade, hoping to lure the Chicago native to return home.

With James out of the lineup, the fans let Wade have it during pregame introductions and continued the loud boos every time he touched the ball early in the game.

Notes: To push Rose for the All-Star game, the Bulls put placards with his picture on every seat and left roses on the writer's work table. He is currently running second among Eastern Conference guards in fan balloting.

THE FACTS: Although the game did not include the emotional factors of LeBron James (sprained ankle) and Joakim Noah (thumb), it was still a dramatic contest. Derrick Rose scored 34 points as the host Chicago Bulls defeated the Miami Heat 99-96 Saturday in the first meeting of the season between the two teams. Miami's Dwyane Wade had 33 points, including four 3-pointers. Kyle Korver hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to complete the Bulls' victory. The Heat have lost three games in a row after going 21-1 the previous 22 games.

THE FACTS II: The game had some incredible runs. The Bulls went on a 13-4 run at the end of the first quarter to build a 28-19 lead, but the Heat had a 53-48 halftime lead thanks to hot 3-point shooting. The Bulls scored the first 15 points of the third quarter to build a 12-point lead, 65-53, then the Heat went on a 14-2 run to tie the game at 67.

QUOTABLE: "I know if there is a shot needed at the end of the game, I will probably be in the game. I may not shoot it, but I will space the floor and I have to be ready. This has probably been the most frustrating season I have had in my life."
-- Korver, who was shooting only 41.5 percent from the field before going three for six Saturday.

THE STAT: Wade had a weird game. He scored 10 points in the first quarter and 11 in the second quarter to finish the half with 21 points, then did not score in the third quarter, playing only four minutes because of foul trouble. In the fourth quarter, he went five for eight, made three 3-pointers, but made only three of six free throw attempts.

THE STAT II: The Heat were six for six from 3-point range in the second quarter on the way to a 53-48 halftime lead. Their last nine points came from 3-pointers (Eddie House, Mike Miller, Wade) in the final minute of the half.

TURNING POINT: With the Heat leading 96-95 with about 30 seconds left, Rose tried to float a shot while double-covered, Carlos Boozer failed to tip it in off the rim, then the ball got slapped out to Korver, who flipped the ball over the head of a Miami player, corralled it and buried the three-pointer.

HOT: House made five of seven shots, including three 3-pointers, to add 13 points to the Heat total.

NOT: Chris Bosh had 17 points but was seven for 18 from the floor. He left the game early in the fourth quarter with an apparent ankle injury.

QUOTABLE II: "I talked about it before the game - two hard-nosed, tough-minded teams, it will probably come down to balls in the air or balls on the ground. The game was decided with balls in the air."
-- Miami coach Erik Spoelstra. The Bulls scored 25 second-chance points to 10 for the Heat, and had six steals to two for the Heat.

INSIDE THE ARENA: In the absence of James, Wade was the designated villain after a summer in which he courted the interest of the Bulls before deciding to stay with Miami. He was booed every time he touched the ball, and many fans cheered when he hit the floor hard and stayed down after a shoulder-to-shoulder collision with Bulls center Kurt Thomas.

GOOD MOVE: Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau prefers a defensive lineup late but put Korver in the game for Ronnie Brewer with 4:37 left and the Bulls up by two, 86-84. After Wade gave the Heat their last lead at 96-95 with a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left, Korver was still in the game to hit the game-winner with 26 seconds left.

NOTABLE: The Heat play only three games in the next 12 days.
