Kings-Raptors Preview

With their two young stars apparently putting rough stretches behind them, the Sacramento Kings are playing some of their best basketball of the season.

Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins will now try to help the Kings stop a nine-game road skid when they face the struggling Toronto Raptors to open a season-high six-game trip Sunday.

Evans had 27 points and 12 assists to lift the Kings to a 122-102 victory win over Denver on Thursday. He went 11 for 18 from the field, following up an 11-of-19, 29-point effort Tuesday to give him two straight outstanding shooting performances.

The 2009-10 rookie of the year, who has dealt with foot problems and family issues this season, is averaging 17.2 points and 39.3 percent from the floor after scoring 20.1 points a game and shooting 45.8 percent last season.

Cousins has bounced back from being relegated to the bench for disciplinary reasons to regain his starting center spot. The rookie made a choking gesture at Golden State's Reggie Williams during an overtime loss Dec. 21, and was used as a reserve the next three games.

He had 21 points and 16 rebounds off the bench against Memphis on Dec. 29 and has started the four contests since, averaging 21.8 points and 9.0 boards in his last five.

Cousins had 20 points against the Nuggets in Sacramento's first victory of the season over a team with a winning record.

"It just took time," said Cousins, averaging 12.8 points and 7.6 rebounds on the season. "We're a young team. We just really had to find our roles. Now things are a lot better."

The Kings (8-25), winners of three of five after dropping 22 of 24, are 2-10 on the road. They'll try to take advantage of the Raptors (12-24), who have lost 13 of 17 but have beaten the Sacramento six straight times at Air Canada Centre, outscoring the Kings 111.3-94.3 in the last four.

The Raptors had six players score in double figures Friday in Boston but lost 122-102. DeMar DeRozan scored a team-best 20 points and has averaged 23.0 in his last five games - 10.0 more than his average in his first 31 this season.

Toronto, opening a three-game homestand, has dropped six of seven at Air Canada Centre.

"If we compete against anybody, we have to do it for 48 minutes," guard Jose Calderon said. "We have to keep working and keep learning."

Evans had 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists to lead the Kings to their second straight win over the Raptors on Nov. 1, 111-108.

Andrea Bargnani led Toronto with 28 points in that game, and has averaged 23.5 points and 58.6 percent shooting in his last four against Sacramento.

The Kings will try to avoid moving closer to matching their longest road losing streak of last season, 11 games from Jan. 1-Feb. 7, 2010.

Bargnani scores 30 as Raptors beat Kings 118-112

TORONTO (AP) With Tyreke Evans injured, the Sacramento Kings couldn't find anyone able to stop DeMar DeRozan.

DeRozan scored 28 points, Andrea Bargnani had 30 and the Toronto Raptors beat Sacramento 118-112 on Sunday, handing the Kings their 10th straight road loss.

"(DeRozan) was too quick for the players we had available and he took advantage of it," Kings coach Paul Westphal said. "He got to the rim."

DeRozan topped 20 points for the fourth time in six games, a streak that began with a career-best 37-point performance at Houston on Dec. 31.

"He's starting to really come into his own as an offensive player, especially when he can drive the ball to the basket like he did tonight," Toronto coach Jay Triano said.

DeRozan is plenty confident in his driving abilities, but knew he'd have an easier time without Evans guarding him.

"I always feel like I'm quick enough to get by a lot of players," DeRozan said. "With them missing one of their best players, I just tried to take advantage of it and do what I had to do."

The NBA's reigning Rookie of the Year, Evans sat with a sprained left ankle, just the third game he's missed this season. Jermaine Taylor started in his place.

Sacramento's six-game road trip continues with back-to-back games Tuesday at Washington and Wednesday at Boston, and Evans' status remains uncertain.

"I'm hopeful but I'm not really expecting him to be able to play the next game," Westphal said. "We'll see how he feels (Monday) and maybe he'll be able to go."

Evans has been bothered by foot problems all season and did not practice Saturday, standing on the sidelines in a walking boot.

Leandro Barbosa scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and Jose Calderon had 13 points and nine assists for the Raptors, who had lost 13 of their previous 17. Toronto had lost six of seven home games during that stretch.

Jerryd Bayless returned from injury to score 10 points and Amir Johnson had eight points and nine rebounds as Toronto won its seventh straight home game against Sacramento.

"We couldn't stop Bargnani or DeRozan or Barbosa, and to some extent Bayless as well," Westphal said. "Our team defense really wasn't good enough to make up for their aggressive penetration."

Beno Udrih scored 25 points and Carl Landry had 22 for the Kings. Jason Thompson had 19 points and 11 rebounds, DeMarcus Cousins had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Francisco Garcia scored 13 for Sacramento, which had won three of its previous five.

Cousins said Evans' absence made things tough for Sacramento.

"Tyreke makes a lot of things happen, especially scoring-wise," Cousins said. "He draws so much attention, he's kicking it out and dishing, so he makes the game a lot easier for other players."

The Kings' last win away from home was a 107-104 victory at Cleveland on Oct. 30.

The game was tied at 96 after Bayless missed the free throw on a potential three-point play with 7:37 left.

But Barbosa made two 3-pointers and DeRozan added a pair of jump shots as Toronto outscored Sacramento 12-4 over the next 4 minutes to take a 108-100 lead with 3:56 left.

Cousins scored on a dunk, a tip-in and a layup and Udrih added a jumper and made one of two from the line as the Kings cut it to 110-109 with 1:06 remaining.

After a Toronto timeout, Bargnani made a 3-pointer with 1:01 left. At the other, Barbosa grabbed the rebound on Garcia's missed 3, allowing Johnson to seal it with a pair of free throws.

Toronto made its first 10 shots before Linas Kleiza missed a jumper with 4:21 left in the opening quarter. Still, the Raptors only led 34-31 after 12 minutes.

Neither team shot well in the second quarter, but Toronto got six points each from Bargnani and DeRozan to take a 57-50 lead at the break.

DeRozan had 11 in the third but Udrih answered with 11 of his own and Thompson added eight as the Kings took the lead. Bayless made a driving layup with 6 seconds left in the third, sending the game to the fourth tied 85-85.

Bayless returned after missing three of the previous four games with a sore left ankle, but Sonny Weems (back spasms) missed his 11th straight game.

NOTES: The last NBA team to make its first 10 field goals was Houston, who did it in a 116-92 home win over the Raptors on Mar. 1, 2010 ... Evans missed Sacramento's Oct. 27 season opening win over Minnesota while serving a one-game suspension for pleading no-contest to reckless driving, and sat out a Dec. 14 loss at Houston because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot. ... Toronto set a season-high with 64 points in the paint. ... Blue Jays players Adam Lind, Jesse Litsch, Travis Snider and Vernon Wells attended the game.

THE FACTS: The Toronto Raptors held on to defeat the Sacramento Kings 118-112 Sunday afternoon at the Air Canada Centre. The Kings were without Tyreke Evans as both teams brought little to the table defensively, with Toronto shooting 59 percent for the game. Andrea Bargnani had 30 points and DeMar DeRozan added 28, leading the Raptors to their 13th victory of the season.

QUOTABLE: "Offense was good. We didn't play good defense all game long. We got better the last five minutes and that's what got us the win...Like the coach always say, we're not going to have a problem scoring the ball. Our biggest issues are always our defense. We've got to get better. We cannot afford to play four quarters like this. Especially at home in front of our crowd."

THE STAT: In the fourth quarter, Sacramento's shooting percentage plummeted to 36 percent while the Raptors held steady at 60 percent. With the score tight, the Raptors started hitting from deep, connecting on four of their five attempts from beyond the arc while Sacramento was just 1-for-6 from downtown in the fourth.

TURNING POINT: After a DeMarcus Cousins layup cut Toronto's lead to one with just over a minute remaining, Bargnani hit his second 3-pointer of the game to put the Raptors up four. After a missed three from Francisco Garcia with 43 seconds remaining, the Raptors added to their lead and were able to escape with the victory.

QUOTABLE II: "My teammates getting the ball in my hands, that allowed me to create...We're very limited [with all of the injuries]. We need everything from the people that we've got. I'm just trying to step it up and help my team get the win."

HOT: DeRozan finished with 28 points on 13-for-20 shooting. Over the past six games, DeRozan is averaging 24 points, almost 10 above his 14.4 points per game average on the season. In the game against the Kings he added four assists, three rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot.

NOT: Starting in place of the injured Evans, Jermaine Taylor wasn't expected to replace the reigning Rookie of the Year. His team probably hoped to get more from him than they did, though. Taylor finished with four points on 2-for-8 shooting in 21 minutes of play. He also didn't see the floor in the fourth quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH: Cousins looked like he was having a sub-par game, finishing with just nine points at the end of three quarters. Then, the fourth quarter happened. Cousins finished the game strong and finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, a steal and two blocked shots. Cousins scored nine points in the fourth on 4-for-5 shooting in the quarter while the rest of his team struggled to put the ball in the basket.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Vernon Wells, Adam Lind, Jesse Litsch and Travis Snider of the Toronto Blue Jays were sitting courtside. It was Jewish Heritage afternoon at the Air Canada Centre.

NOTABLE: The Raptors started the game 10-for-10 from the floor. It was the first time a team has opened a game hitting their first ten field goal attempts since Houston did it against Toronto on March 1st, 2010. Leandro Barbosa had 11 points in the fourth quarter, hitting both of his attempts from beyond the arc and shooting 4-for-6 from the floor. Carl Landry had 22 points off of the bench for the Kings. Beno Udrih led Sacramento in scoring with 25 points. Jerryd Bayless returned from an ankle injury to score 10 points in 14 minutes.
