Warriors-Clippers Preview

Over the next month, the Golden State Warriors only need to worry about playing in two arenas.

Before opening a stretch of the schedule filled with home games, the Warriors make the first of two trips to Staples Center on Sunday to face the Los Angeles Clippers in a matchup of teams suddenly amassing wins after struggling mightily.

Playing with a healthy roster for one of the few times this season, Golden State (15-21) had little trouble against lowly Cleveland on Friday, hitting 14 3-pointers and leading by double figures for most of the second half in a 116-98 win.

"I don't want to beat a dead horse but it's good when we've got a full roster," said David Lee, who had 22 points and 14 rebounds. "You got guys that can support you. You can go out there and play all out."

Monta Ellis led the Warriors with 32 points but was equally effective dishing off, finishing with 10 assists. Coach Keith Smart has been pressing his veteran guard to do more passing in recent weeks. Golden State is 4-0 when Ellis has at least 10 assists.

One of those instances occurred in the only meeting of the season between these Pacific Division rivals, when Ellis had 15 points and 11 assists in a 109-91 home win Oct. 29. Dorell Wright finished with a game-high 24 points for Golden State, which hit 14 of 24 3-pointers.

After this meeting, the Warriors will play 13 of 14 at Oracle Arena with the only road game coming against the Clippers on Jan. 22. They won't travel outside of California until visiting Phoenix on Feb. 10.

This stretch gives Golden State a good chance to reach .500, particularly because it's finally at full strength. Andris Biedrins came back Wednesday after missing nine games with a sprained ankle, the same injury which caused Stephen Curry to sit out six games before returning on Christmas.

"It's our time," Ellis said. "We've got all our guys back, we're playing great basketball and we're going to try to put it all together and try to get some wins."

The Warriors have won two straight and six of nine after losing 16 of 19.

The Clippers (11-24) also are playing much better after going through an awful stretch.

Los Angeles hasn't played since beating Denver 106-93 on Wednesday. It was the sixth win in nine games for the Clippers, who had dropped 17 of their previous 21.

Blake Griffin had 22 points and 18 rebounds against the Nuggets to tie a franchise record with his 22nd consecutive double-double. DeAndre Jordan finished with 14 points, tied a career high with 20 rebounds and had six blocks, giving him 20 in the past three games.

"We are just trying to play our game," reserve guard Eric Bledsoe said. " ... As long as everybody does their role, we'll be able to get the win."

Los Angeles had one of its best defensive efforts of the season Wednesday, limiting the Nuggets to 37.5 percent shooting and holding a 57-43 rebounding advantage. The Clippers won for the fifth time in six games when limiting opponents under 100 points, but they're 1-17 when allowing teams to reach the century mark.

Holding Golden State below 100 points could be tough.

The Warriors are averaging 106.0 points in their last 10 games and 116.5 in the last four against Los Angeles while winning three. They have hit triple figures in 12 of 13 meetings since the 2007-08 season, going 9-4.

These teams meet again Friday at Oracle Arena.

Gordon scores 25 in Clips' 105-91 rout of Warriors

LOS ANGELES (AP) Blake Griffin already has seen plenty of valleys and peaks during his short NBA career. His favorite experience has been over the past three quiet weeks, when his Los Angeles Clippers steadily built the foundation of a solid team.

Eric Gordon scored 25 points, Griffin had 23 points and 12 rebounds, and the Clippers beat the Golden State Warriors 105-91 Sunday for their seventh win in 10 games.

Griffin added another superlative to his remarkable rookie season, reaching double figures in points and rebounds for a club-record 23rd consecutive game. The Clippers had little trouble with the high-scoring Warriors, who beat them during Los Angeles' 1-13 start to the season - a stretch that seems far away to Griffin now.

"The best part about all of it is we've played consistently and played well during this stretch," Griffin said. "It's changed from the beginning of the season, where it seemed like we were losing every night for a different reason. Now we're winning a different way every time. It's a great feeling."

Baron Davis had 17 points and 11 assists for the Clippers, who have roared to life after sitting at 5-21 in mid-December.

With the inside-outside punch of Griffin and Gordon, Los Angeles sped past the Warriors with an 18-4 run to close the second quarter, taking a lead that never dipped to single digits in the second half.

"I always believed this team could make these strides and get a whole lot better," Davis said. "I think this is just the beginning of what we can be, especially because of the young guys who are getting the opportunity to start, and playing a lot of close games. We know we have the capability of being a good team."

DeAndre Jordan added nine points and 13 rebounds as the Clippers played with the reckless, exciting style that's becoming their trademark under first-year coach Vinny Del Negro, starting with Davis' highlight-reel pass to Griffin for a dunk just 64 seconds in. Los Angeles alternates electrifying alley-oop jams and 3-pointers with boneheaded turnovers and defensive mistakes, yet the crowd-pleasing theatrics worked just fine against the Warriors.

"We have a lot of young players developing, and we're not nearly as consistent as we need to be on both sides of the court," Del Negro said. "We got some good performances. Eric had a big first half, and Blake was dominant when he needed to be."

Perhaps it's no coincidence Los Angeles has found its footing during a relatively calm stretch of games after a tough early-season schedule. The Clippers had the past three days off, and they've got two more days off before the Miami Heat visit Staples Center on Wednesday.

"We played them earlier this season, and they're a totally different team," Golden State's Stephen Curry said of the Clippers.

Dorell Wright scored 27 points and hit five 3-pointers for the Warriors, who also had won six of nine after a 3-16 stretch.

Monta Ellis, the NBA's third-leading scorer, managed just 13 points on 4 for 19 shooting. Curry also struggled, getting eight points on 2 of 13 shooting while missing most of the first half with foul trouble.

David Lee had just eight points and four rebounds before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter, and Andris Biedrins went scoreless in 26 minutes before also fouling out of his third game back from a sprained ankle.

Golden State struggled in its final road game before a stretch with 13 of its next 14 in Oakland. The Pacific Division rivals will meet again Friday night in Oakland and back at Staples Center on Jan. 22.

"Other than Dorell, nobody shot the ball particularly well," Lee said. "Steph and Monta didn't have their best shooting nights, but that's going to happen on the road."

Curry barely played in the first half after picking up two quick fouls, but Wright kept the Warriors close with 15 points in the first quarter. The Clippers capped their decisive run with Davis' fast-break 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left, taking a 62-48 lead into halftime.

"When you turn the ball over 19 times and you don't give yourself a chance to have a good look at the basket, that's going to hurt you," Golden State coach Keith Smart said. "We settled too much for long jump shots, so we didn't shoot well like we had been, and that played a big part in it."

NOTES: Davis and Warriors F Vladimir Radmanovic exchanged angry words after Radmanovic fouled Davis midway through the second quarter. Teammates and officials eventually broke up their prolonged discussion, which Davis jokingly said was about their respective beards. "I told him I had mine longer," Davis laughed. ... Clippers C Chris Kaman missed his 15th straight game with a sprained left ankle. The former All-Star hasn't played since Dec. 5, and the club hasn't indicated he's anywhere close to returning.

Warriors-Clippers notebook

THE FACTS: Blake Griffin had 23 points and 12 rebounds for his 23rd consecutive double-double, and Baron Davis had 17 points and 11 assists for his first of the season in leading the Los Angeles Clippers to a 105-91 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday afternoon at Staples Center.

QUOTABLE: "We are practicing crisper and getting to know each other better. The chemistry is good and we are really active out on the court."

THE STAT: In addition to the double-double streak, Griffin has also totaled at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in 12 straight games. The rookie power forward even excelled at the free-throw line against the Warriors, his only weak spot this season. A 59 percent free-throw shooter coming in, Griffin shot 9-for-11 from the line, his best performance of the season when shooting at least five in a game.

TURNING POINT: The Clippers went on a 21-4 run to close the first half and take a 62-48 lead into the locker room. With the score tied 44-44, Davis got into a stare down after a hard foul by Vladimir Radmanovic, then proceeded to score nine points in the run, including a 3-point basket with 2.5 seconds left in the half. The Warriors never got closer than 12 the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "After we got going, we felt good as a team and I was able to just make the easy pass and we were knocking down shots."

HOT: With his recent play, Davis has elevated the Clippers from an entertaining team to a good team. In his last four games, he's averaging 14.2 points with 33 assists and just seven turnovers.

NOT: Take your pick for Golden State. Their backcourt duo of Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry were a combined 6-for-32 from the field, including 0-for-11 from beyond the 3-point stripe. The team's third-leading scorer, center David Lee, wasn't much better, shooting 2-for-6 and scoring eight points before fouling out with 6:02 remaining.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Dorell Wright, a Los Angeles native who attended nearby Leuzinger High in Lawndale, scored 27 points for the Warriors. He had 15 in the game's first 9 1/2 minutes but then went to the bench with his third foul. Wright came in averaging 21.1 points over the previous nine games.

GOOD MOVE: Gordon attacked Curry from the opening tip, resulting in two fouls in the first 2 1/2 minutes for Golden State's second-leading scorer. Curry went to the bench and didn't return until 4:19 remained in the first half, just in time for the Clippers' decisive run.

BAD MOVE: Golden State center Andris Biedrins played in his third game since missing nine with a sprained ankle. He bumped his minutes up to 26 against the Clippers, but didn't improve anything else, going scoreless before fouling out with 2:15 remaining.

ROOKIE WATCH: Del Negro continues to stick with small forward Al-Farouq Aminu off the bench, rather than veteran Rasual Butler. Aminu struggled the last couple games, but looked much better against the Warriors, scoring 12 points and grabbing five rebounds in 21 minutes.

NOTABLE: The Clippers have won seven of their last 10 games, equaling Portland and San Antonio for the best record in the Western Conference over their last 10. They'll get a huge test Wednesday when the Miami Heat come to town.
