Bulls-Nets Preview

The Chicago Bulls continue to make the most of a favorable stretch in their schedule.

Trying for a rare victory in New Jersey, the Bulls look to extend their winning streak to six games by beating the struggling Nets on Wednesday night for the second time in less than a week.

Chicago (23-10) defeated Toronto 111-91 on Tuesday for its 14th win in 16 games. While only three games during that stretch have come against teams currently with winning records - and none during their current winning streak - the Bulls have not taken anything for granted.

Luol Deng scored 24 points while Derrick Rose added 19 and Taj Gibson had 16 points with 14 rebounds off the bench as the Bulls shot 53.0 percent and had a chance to rest some starters against the Raptors. Omer Asik added a career-high 13 points as Chicago's reserves finished with 52 points.

"In games like this, you see just how talented (the reserves are)," said Carlos Boozer, who has averaged 27.3 points and 10.7 rebounds in his last four games versus New Jersey. "You see how talented Taj is, you see how talented O is. The more time you get, the better you become."

Chicago's bench could see more minutes with stops in New Jersey (9-25) and Philadelphia before returning home to face Eastern Conference-leading Boston on Saturday.

Deng, however, has averaged 22.5 points on 53.1 percent shooting the last four games after scoring at least 20 only once in the previous 14 contests.

While Rose (team-high 23.8 points per game), Boozer and Deng have paced the Bulls offensively, they've also played a major role in helping the team hold opponents to 86.4 points over the last 15 games.

New Jersey shot 39.0 percent and was held to 37 second-half points in a 90-81 loss Friday in Chicago.

Though the Bulls have won four of five on the road overall, they've dropped two straight and 18 of 20 at New Jersey. That history and a solid effort in Chicago could give the Nets some confidence while trying to avoid a sixth straight defeat.

New Jersey was outscored by a combined 51 points in its previous three games, but trailed the Bulls by two midway through the fourth quarter before falling short last week.

"That's a really good team," said forward Brook Lopez, who scored 19 points against the Bulls. "We battled them the entire game."

Though Lopez played well in that contest and had 26 with 14 rebounds in a 127-116 double-overtime home win over the Bulls on April 9, he was held to six points and four boards in a 103-88 New Year's Day loss at Minnesota.

Sasha Vujacic matched a career high with 22 points, but the Nets were outscored 23-9 in the third quarter and committed 19 turnovers.

"It hurts," Nets forward Kris Humphries said. "We're putting in time, all the players are watching film and trying to correct things and really working hard at it. We're staying after it."

Nets edge Bulls on Vujacic's winning basket

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Sasha Vujacic was the second option, supposed to get the ball if the New Jersey Nets couldn't get it to Brook Lopez.

That's exactly what happened, so who cares that it wasn't exactly how the Nets planned it?

Vujacic made the tiebreaking basket with 5.3 seconds left, and the Nets snapped their five-game losing streak with a 96-94 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night.

With the game tied at 94, Nets guard Devin Harris appeared to be attempting a lob pass to Lopez, but the Bulls' C.J. Watson tipped the ball and it went to Vujacic, who put it in from close range for his 13th point.

"That's how Devin drew it up," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "(Sasha) was in the right place at the right time. We were looking for Brook. If he wasn't there, we wanted to get the ball to Sasha. Devin thought he saw something and boy, we got a good bounce. As hard as we've been working recently, we needed something fortunate to happen."

Said Harris: "The lob was a little bit low. I have to remember my guy is about 7-foot-2. Sasha did a great job of getting the loose ball and putting it in for us."

With the Bulls out of timeouts, Derrick Rose missed a 3-pointer and Chicago's five-game winning streak was over.

Kris Humphries responded to a demotion with a season-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Harris finished with 18 points and 11 assists for the Nets. Lopez scored 14 points.

"It was a game we just had to win," Vujacic said. "We really, really needed the win. We made some mistakes. I forced a couple of shots but we stayed with it."

Rose had 21 points but just one assist for the Bulls, who lost for only the third time in 17 games. Luol Deng scored 15 points, but Carlos Boozer finished with just 12 in 26 minutes, sitting the entire fourth quarter as coach Tom Thibodeau went with a small lineup.

"You've got to talk to Thibs about that," said Boozer, Chicago's high-priced offseason acquisition. "That was a coaching decision."

Humphries headed to the bench so rookie Derrick Favors could make his first NBA start, but still played the majority of the minutes after Favors was in foul trouble throughout and helped the Nets avenge a loss to Chicago last week.

"Every night I am motivated to go out and play," Humphries said. "We're trying to turn this around. Whether I'm starting or coming off the bench, whatever my role is, I've got to play hard. Whatever your role is, you have to accept it and do it to your fullest."

The Bulls had been beating up on weaklings, with a victory at Detroit before home wins over Milwaukee, New Jersey, Cleveland and Toronto. Their 90-81 victory over the Nets on New Year's Eve in Chicago was the only victory by single digits during their streak.

But they seemed to lack energy a night after routing the Raptors, and their best stretch of play came mostly with reserves on the floor in the fourth quarter.

"We played very bad but we still had a chance to win," Rose said. "We had a lot of possessions where we could've took the lead or tied the game but we didn't."

The Nets led 93-84 with 2:59 left after Harris scored six straight points, but Rose wiped most of that out by converting a three-point play and nailing a 3-pointer before Ronnie Brewer's fast-break bucket made it 93-92 with 1:45 to go.

The Bulls missed two chances to grab the lead before Lopez sank a free throw to make it a two-point game. Deng then missed two free throws, and after Harris was off on a jumper, Watson hit two from the line to tie it at 94 with 11.1 seconds remaining, setting up the Nets' broken possession that turned into a winner.

The news before the game was the Nets' lineup switch. Johnson said the Nets liked the work of Humphries, averaging a team-best 9.2 rebounds, but that it was time to give the No. 3 pick and youngest player in the league his chance to be an NBA starter.

"This has been planned for some time," Johnson said before the game. "He's had about 34 games to get some experience coming off the bench. He's played against the Bulls before. We move forward looking at our starting 4 and 5 man of the future."

Actually, the 19-year-old Favors would have already been gone had a proposed four-team deal that would have brought Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey not fallen through during the preseason. New Jersey would still dangle Favors if a deal for Denver's All-Star forward can be revived.

Favors finished with seven points and five rebounds in 9 minutes. He picked up two quick fouls and had to go to the bench, but Humphries replaced him and had 12 points in the first half to keep New Jersey within 47-46.

Favors then had the first two baskets of the second half to propel the Nets into the lead before quickly going back to the bench after picking up his fourth. He watched the Nets open a 78-65 lead after Jordan Farmar picked up Rose's turnover and rushed downcourt for a dunk with 4.4 seconds left to cap New Jersey's 32-point third quarter, its best of the season.

Notes: Lopez, the Nets' center, grabbed two rebounds in the opening 2 minutes, then didn't have another until there were about 6 1/2 minutes left in the game. ... The Bulls will have to win the final two meetings to win the series for only the third time in 11 seasons.

Nets-Bulls notebook

THE FACTS: Sasha Vujacic corralled a loose ball off of a deflection and converted a game-winning floater in the paint to hand the Nets a 96-94 win over the Bulls. Kris Humphries, who was moved to the bench in favor of Derrick Favors, paced the Nets with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Derrick Rose (21 points, one assist, one rebound, -14) mixed individual brilliance with an incomplete performance for the Bulls.

QUOTABLE: "They were playing zone, so we had to keep shooting on the floor. That was the main reason to put [Luol Deng] at the four, to get more range shooting out there."

THE STAT: The Nets outscored the Bulls 32-18 in the third quarter.

TURNING POINT: Down 94-92 with 34.8 seconds on the clock, Luol Deng missed two free throws that could have tied the game. The Bulls would eventually tie the score, but the missed freebies put the Nets in the proverbial driver's seat.

QUOTABLE II: "We watched quite a bit of film."
-- Nets coach Avery Johnson, speaking about what he did to help his team come out of the gates strong in the second half. Johnson also said he spoke longer than usual at halftime.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Like a modern microwave, Humphries provided an almost instantaneous spark for the Nets. Aside from the impressive stat line, he played like a man possessed, zooming around the court to consistently make things happen. "Best game in a winning situation," Johnson said of Humphries.

INSIDE THE ARENA: A fan behind the Bulls' bench held up a sign that read "Keep the Nets in New Jersey"... Drew Coleman of the Jets sat courtside. The Jets will travel to Indianapolis to take on the Colts on Saturday night in a first round Wild Card matchup.

ROOKIE WATCH: Aside from a nice sequence to start the second half, Favors (seven points and five rebounds in nine minutes of action) was saddled with foul trouble in his first start. The performance provided a simple reminder that the Favors is still learning how to play NBA basketball.

NOTABLE: The Nets opened the game with a 12-5 run...In the middle of the first quarter, Rose converted on back-back to sensational layups, jackknifing through traffic into the lane. On dribble penetration, the Memphis product was an absolute marvel to watch...A follow-up dunk from Humphries that put the Nets up 27-26 elicited cheers from the crowd. 52 seconds later Harris found Humphries on an alley-oop...Humphries and Vujacic combined on a five-point possession in the second quarter to put the Nets up 34-29...A small pocket of fans chanted for former Net Brian Scalabrine midway through the second quarter... Harris scored the Nets' first and last field goals of the first half, but didn't make a shot in between...After beating the Raptors by 20 last night, the Bulls reportedly had plane issues and arrived at 3:30 am...Vujacic frequently brought the ball up the court to initiate the offense in the fourth quarter...The Nets are now 4-4 when five-plus players score in double figures.
