Bobcats-Timberwolves Preview

The Charlotte Bobcats hope a game against one of their favorite opponents can help them avoid losing 10 straight on the road for the first time in three years.

The Bobcats, who are again expected to be without Gerald Wallace, look to beat the Timberwolves for the eighth time in nine meetings Wednesday night at the Target Center.

Wallace aggravated his ankle injury in practice Sunday and is expected to miss a "few games," according to coach Paul Silas. Charlotte (11-21) is 1-5 without its 2010 All-Star this season.

Wallace, averaging 16.5 points, and starting center Nazr Mohammed (knee) sat out Monday, and the short-handed Bobcats had little chance against surging Miami.

Charlotte lost 96-82, falling for the second straight time after winning its first two under Silas. Stephen Jackson had a team-high 22 points and D.J. Augustin added 16 for the Bobcats, who shot 38.0 percent and missed 18 straight shots at one point.

The loss concluded a five-game homestand for the Bobcats, who are now set to play their only road contest in a nine-game stretch.

Taking to the road for one game could still be problematic for Charlotte, which has been outscored by an average of 14.1 points in losing nine straight away from home. The Bobcats haven't lost 10 consecutive road games since dropping 11 in a row Nov. 7, 2007-Jan. 4, 2008.

"It's going to be a journey - it's not going to happen instantly," Silas said. "Instituting our system is like going back to training camp, and it's rough. I'm kind of getting a feel for the guys as to who wants to play and play hard all the time, so we'll see how it goes."

Jackson, who averages a team-best 18.4 points, has seemingly played hard against the Timberwolves recently.

In three games versus Minnesota since being acquired by Charlotte in November 2009, Jackson is averaging 32.0 points and shooting 59.0 percent - 72.2 from 3-point range (13 of 18).

Jackson and Wallace each had 26 points against Minnesota on Nov. 15 as the Bobcats rallied from an eight-point deficit with under 2 minutes remaining to win 113-110. That marked Charlotte's third straight victory over the Timberwolves and seventh in eight games in the series.

Minnesota (9-26) is coming off a 96-93 loss at Boston on Monday, its second defeat in five games following a 2-15 stretch.

The Timberwolves, who squandered a 10-point, third-quarter lead, had a couple of chances late, but Luke Ridnour was called for traveling with a clear path to the basket with 10.3 seconds left and Michael Beasley's desperation 3 at the buzzer missed.

"It's really frustrating," said Kevin Love, who had 12 points and 24 rebounds. "It's tough losing games in the manner that we have. We show that we can play with everybody. It's just not being able to close out the games."

Love leads the league with 30 double-doubles, but one of the five games when he didn't notch one came against the Bobcats in November. Plagued by foul trouble, Love finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, and the Timberwolves were outrebounded 45-37.

Minnesota, one of the top rebounding teams in the league at 44.8 per game, is 2-11 when losing the battle on the glass.

Bobcats rally to beat Minnesota 108-105 in OT

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The shots kept clanging off the rim for D.J. Augustin, and coach Paul Silas just kept telling his point guard to keep shooting.

The way the Minnesota Timberwolves play defense, the opportunities were going to keep coming. Just when all seemed lost for the Charlotte Bobcats, those shots finally started dropping.

Augustin scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, and Tyrus Thomas had 21 points and 11 rebounds off the bench to rally the short-handed Bobcats to a 108-105 overtime victory against Minnesota on Wednesday night.

"It was a bad night. I was missing shots, but I was getting good looks," said Augustin, who missed 11 of his first 12 shots. "It just wasn't going down, but I made them when it counted."

Under the previous regime of quick-hook Larry Brown, Augustin might have found himself on the bench. But Silas, who is 3-2 since taking over on Dec. 22, stayed with him, and it paid off in the end.

Augustin scored eight points in the final 2:08 of regulation to tie the game and the Bobcats snapped a nine-game road losing streak without leading scorers Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace.

"He had confidence in me and my teammates and he just told me to keep shooting and that's what I did," Augustin said.

Kevin Love had 35 points and 15 rebounds and Michael Beasley had 28 points and 12 boards for the Wolves, who turned the ball over five times in overtime to let another fourth-quarter lead slip away.

The Wolves had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer at the end of overtime, but they looked completely disjointed coming out of the timeout. Beasley dribbled as the clock ticked down from 13 seconds and wound up hoisting an off-balance prayer at the buzzer that was way off.

Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis waited for Beasley as he exited the court and stared him down, but Beasley walked right on by.

After the game, Rambis acknowledged that his players were not executing what he was drawing up in the huddle.

"Not accurately tonight," Rambis said. "No, they did not."

Jackson was out with a hyperextended left knee and Wallace missed his seventh game in a row with a sprained left ankle. The Bobcats were also missing center Nazr Mohammed and used a starting five with three players who average 5.3 points or fewer per game.

"It's still going to take us some time, but I liked the fact that we did not give up," Silas said. "We could have very easily done that, but our guys just kept fighting and kept fighting. When I get all of my team back, if they fight the way these guys have been fighting, we have a chance to be pretty good."

Losing to undermanned teams is nothing new for the Wolves, who dropped a home game to the Nuggets last week even though Carmelo Anthony, Nene, Kenyon Martin and Al Harrington all sat out with injuries.

After perhaps their worst first half of the season, the Timberwolves erased a 16-point third-quarter deficit and led by eight with less than 3 minutes to play.

But the youngest team in the NBA has let plenty of potential wins slip away in the final period, including at Charlotte on Nov. 11.

Minnesota led by six with 1:30 to play, but the Bobcats used a 10-1 run to win 113-110. They had both Wallace and Jackson in that one, but this time still managed to jump out to a 59-43 lead early in the second half without their two leading scorers.

Kwame Brown, who entered the night with two double-digit rebounding efforts in the previous 66 games, had 12 boards in the first half.

"This was a very frustrating game," Rambis said. "You could just feel it at the beginning of the ballgame that they didn't come out with the right type of focus and intensity to win a game in the NBA. They weren't ready to play."

The best rebounding team in the league was outrebounded 9-1 on the offensive glass and Love was limited to five rebounds as Minnesota fell behind 57-43.

The Timberwolves outscored Charlotte 30-14 in the third quarter to take back the lead, but defensive breakdowns and turnovers late in the game cost them again.

"There's not much Kurt can do," Love said. "We're the ones out there playing and making the mistakes. We were the ones who missed free throws ... committed dumb fouls, turned the ball over. It's not just one person. It's collectively, the entire unit."

NOTE: Bobcats C DeSagana Diop had surgery to repair his right Achilles' tendon. The team said the operation, performed in Charlotte, was a success. His rehab is expected to take nine to 12 months. ... Thomas played with tendinitis in his right knee. He drew a technical in the fourth for gesturing toward an official. ... Rambis said F Anthony Tolliver, out with a sprained MCL in his right knee, should be ready to go Sunday.

THE FACTS: Tyrus Thomas scored 21 points and grabbed 18 rebounds and the Bobcats, playing without three starters, rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final 4:47 to beat the Timberwolves in Minneapolis, 108-105 in overtime. Kevin Love scored 35 points with 15 rebounds for Minnesota, but Charlotte broke a nine-game road losing streak by scoring the final five points of regulation to force the extra period.

QUOTABLE: "He's the best shooter we have on the team. He's going to miss four in a row, but when he does, there's a good chance he's going to make four in a row, too."
-- Charlotte forward Boris Diaw, on point guard D.J. Augustin, who was 1-for-12 from the field before scoring 10 points in the final two minutes of regulation and overtime.

THE STAT: 4 -- Consecutive losses by the Timberwolves in which they blew a fourth-quarter lead of five points or more.

TURNING POINT: Wes Johnson's 20-foot jumper gave Minnesota a 95-90 lead with 1:48 to play, but the Wolves' nagging inability to execute at the end of close games overwhelmed them once again. Minnesota missed its final five shots of regulation, three of them from within five feet of the basket, turned the ball over once, and Jonny Flynn committed a critical foul on Augustin as he shot a three-pointer, allowing the Bobcats to force overtime.

HOT: Thomas, nearly scratched before the game due to tendonitis in his right knee, shrugged off the pain and erupted for 21 points and 11 rebounds in a season-high 36 minutes, helping the Bobcats overcome the loss of Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace and Nazr Mohammed up front.

NOT: Timberwolves reserves made only 7-of-21 shots and were outscored 57-21 by Charlotte's bench on a night when the Bobcats had to use three reserves in their starting lineup.

GOOD MOVE: Point guard D.J. Augustin was 1-for-12 from the field late in the fourth quarter, when Charlotte coach Paul Silas pulled him aside during a timeout with a surprising order: Keep shooting. Given that encouragement, Augustin tried three three-pointers in the final 2:07 of regulation, making two of them and being fouled on the third, allowing the Bobcats to force overtime.

NOTABLE: In addition to being down three starters, Charlotte was also without reserve center DeSagana Diop. ... Charlotte relied on an effective pick-and-roll, executed by guard Augustin and center Eduardo Najera on four consecutive possessions, to outscore Minnesota 13-10 in the extra period. ... Charlotte turned the Wolves' 16 turnovers into 25 points. ... Minnesota's final possession of overtime failed when Michael Beasley's forced three-point jumper bounced long off the rim. ... Love scored 30 or more points for the fifth time this season, collected 15 or more rebounds for the 22nd time, and posted his 22nd consecutive double-double. ... Charlotte has beaten Minnesota nine times in the teams' last 10 meetings.
