Mavericks-Cavaliers Preview

The injuries are piling up for both Dallas and Cleveland, but the absences of three key players can't make the results any worse for the Cavaliers.

The short-handed Mavericks, meanwhile, have stumbled to a season-worst three-game losing streak they'll try to halt Sunday night in Cleveland - without Caron Butler and perhaps without Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion.

Dallas (24-8) hasn't won any of its three games without Nowitzki, who suffered a sprained right knee during Monday's 103-93 win at Oklahoma City.

The task got even tougher Saturday at Milwaukee, with Marion out due to a thigh bruise and Butler missing the final three quarters of a 99-87 defeat with a knee injury. The trio averages 49.9 points and 17.5 rebounds.

"We're short on bodies now, having some injury problems," Nowitzki said. "But we've got to fight through it."

It's uncertain if Nowitzki or Marion will suit up Sunday as the Mavericks try to avoid their first four-game slide since Jan. 9-14, 2009. What is certain is that Butler won't play, as the forward could be out at least a couple of months with what has been initially diagnosis as a torn patellar tendon.

Guard Jose Juan Barea helped compensate with a career-high 29 points off the bench Saturday, but Dallas' depleted frontcourt struggled. With power forward Brian Cardinal making his second start and playing a season-high 34 minutes, the Mavericks were outrebounded 51-31 and outscored in the paint 50-24.

That may not be as big of a problem against the crumbling Cavaliers, who were without two of their top three scorers and leading rebounder Saturday for a 100-91 loss at Chicago.

Anderson Varejao (9.8 rebounds per game) is recovering from a broken cheekbone and will miss Sunday's game, while guards Mo Williams and Daniel Gibson - who combine to average 29.0 points - are day-to-day.

With little-used Leon Powe and Manny Harris in the starting lineup, Cleveland still managed an eight-point halftime lead against the Bulls with what coach Byron Scott called "a great effort by a team that is obviously depleted with injuries."

The Cavaliers (8-25), though, were outscored 32-9 in the third quarter en route to their 16th defeat in 17 games. They've sunk to the bottom of the Eastern Conference while dropping six in a row, but three of the last four losses have come by single digits.

"It's not like we've been playing horribly of late," forward Antawn Jamison said. "There have been a couple of stretches that dictate the outcome of the game. (Saturday), the third quarter was the difference."

Jamison, averaging 19.9 points in his last seven games, has not faced Butler and Mavericks center Brendan Haywood since Washington traded the three former teammates away last season.

The Cavaliers have been successful against Dallas in recent years, winning four straight before a 102-95 road loss in the last meeting Dec. 20, 2009, but LeBron James made major contributions in all of those victories.

The Mavericks, meanwhile, overcame Nowitzki's absence due to an elbow injury in last December's win.

Marion, Stevenson lead Mavericks past Cavs

CLEVELAND (AP) Dallas coach Rick Carlisle knew his short-handed team needed a boost to break its three-game losing streak.

Leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki was on the bench in street clothes for the fourth straight game because of a sprained knee. Caron Butler, the Mavericks' third-leading scorer, was flying back to Dallas with a knee injury he suffered Saturday night in Milwaukee that could possibly keep him out for an extended period of time.

Carlisle ended up with plenty of volunteers to pick up the slack in Sunday night's 104-95 win over Cleveland.

Shawn Marion scored 22 points and DeShawn Stevenson added 21 as both players hit their season-highs to pace the balanced attack. Jason Terry, starting for only the sixth time this season, scored 18 points, Tyson Chandler added 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Jason Kidd had 10 points and eight assists.

"This was a much needed win for us with what happened with Caron," Carlisle said. "It has been a tough 24 hours, but the guys came together and really battled hard. They made runs at us, but we had answers."

The Cavaliers, who were equally short-handed, have lost seven straight and 17 of 18. Point guard Mo Williams returned after missing two games because of a strained hip, but scored five points, making 2 off 11 from the field. Cleveland played without two starters, center Anderson Varejao (broken cheekbone) and guard Daniel Gibson (bruised thigh).

Antawn Jamison led Cleveland with a season-high 35 points, and Ramon Sessions added 19.

Marion, who didn't play against the Bucks because of a thigh injury, made 11 of 16 from the field while Stevenson hit five 3-pointers. Chandler made all six of his field goal attempts while Terry was 8 of 14 from the field.

"We are beat up right now," Marion said. "We needed this game. We had a tough night in Milwaukee."

Nowitzki leads the Mavericks in scoring at 24.1 points per game, while Butler is third at 15.0. Butler is scheduled to have an MRI, which may be performed Monday.

"We needed this one desperately," Chandler said. "To lose Caron, we were lucky we gained Shawn back. That really helped us out."

No Cleveland player reached double figures other than Jamison and Sessions.

"We didn't have enough guys play well," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "That's pretty much the bottom line. When you're playing against a good team like Dallas, it can't be just two guys. You have to have four or five guys play well."

Thanks to the injuries, Scott was forced to give inexperienced players Manny Harris, Alonzo Gee and Christian Eyenega significant minutes.

"It's always tough," Scott said. "The whole situation we're right now is tough."

Jamison, one of Cleveland's few veterans who is healthy, was 14 of 22 from the field and had 10 rebounds.

"It's very difficult, especially with the type of streak we are going through," he said.

The Mavericks, who improved to 12-2 on the road, scored the first eight points and led 21-7 in the first quarter. The Cavaliers led briefly early in the second period, but Dallas regained control. The Mavericks' biggest lead of the half was 49-34 late in the second quarter.

Dallas built a 17-point lead in the second half and wasn't seriously threatened in the final two quarters.

NOTES: Butler, who is from the Milwaukee area, remained there after Saturday night's game and flew to Dallas on Sunday night. ... Dallas recalled rookie F Dominique Jones from the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League. He scored nine points ... Varejao, who will be fitted with a mask to protect his injury, could return Wednesday against Toronto. ... The Cavaliers recalled Eyenga from the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League. He made his NBA debut in the second quarter and scored his first basket on a dunk. Eyenga scored four points.

THE FACTS: Who needs Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler? Well, the Dallas Mavericks, that's who. But for one night the Mavs survived without their two stars, using a team-wide effort for a 104-95 road win over Cleveland on Sunday. It also snapped a three-game losing streak for the Mavs (25-8). Capably filling in for the injured Nowitzki (knee) and Butler (worse knee) were the likes of Shawn Marion (22 points) and DeShawn Stevenson (21). Antawn Jamison's 35 points and 10 rebounds paced the Cavaliers (8-26).

QUOTABLE: "This was a much-needed win for us. With what happened to Caron last night, it's been a tough 24 hours. But the guys came together and battled hard."

THE STAT: Five. That's how many double-doubles compiled this season by Tyson Chandler. Not only did the Mavs center finish with 14 points and 14 rebounds, but he also made all six of his field-goal attempts.

TURNING POINT: The Mavs raced to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter, but the Cavs battled back to go up 28-27 early in the second. That's when the Mavs went on a major run and regain control. They led 50-41 at half and never trailed again. "They made a run at our bench guys and our bench guys sucked it up and made a run back at them," Carlisle said. "I thought that was probably the most important stretch of the game."

QUOTABLE II: "I think we did a really good job of moving the ball and making the extra pass. That's really what it boils down to. We got stops when we needed to and we were really looking for each other."

HOT: Jamison looked like a Harlem Globetrotter on a team of D-Leaguers, making 14 of 22 shots and playing with lots of passion despite being the Cavs' second-oldest player. ... Also, for the Cavs, Ramon Sessions played his third straight strong game with 19 points, 12 assists and seven boards. ... Sixth Man of the Year candidate Jason Terry scored 18 points for the Mavs in a rare start.

NOT: Mavs rookie Dominique Jones got called up from the D-League earlier in the day and immediately started firing away. Jones looked good overall, but went just 2-for-10 shooting in his return to the NBA. "I was very fortunate to have [the D-League affiliate] so close," Jones said. "I got a chance to play and get my rhythm back and learn."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Mo Williams returned after missing two games with a hip injury, but went 2-for-11 shooting and scored five points. Might want to consider replacing or trading him as the Cavs are likely to stick with their youth movement (and Sessions) in the coming weeks.

ROOKIE WATCH: Undrafted guard Manny Harris received his second straight start for the Cavs, finishing with two points, four assists and lots of hustle. Also, Cavs rookie swingman Christian Eyenga was called up from the D-League earlier in the day and scored four points off the bench. It could be argued that Eyenga was the most athletic player on the floor Sunday.

NOTABLE: Marion, Stevenson and Jamison each had season-high in points. ... Over the last four games, Sessions is averaging 16.5 points on 59 percent shooting.
