The Utah Jazz struggled a bit in December, though they still haven't lost to a team with a losing record since October.

There's good reason to believe that trend will continue as January begins.

Deron Williams and the Jazz take the court on New Year's Day trying to hand the Memphis Grizzlies their eighth consecutive loss in Salt Lake City.

Utah went 8-6 in December and has lost two of three games this week - both to a Portland team which entered with a .500 record.

The only time all season the Jazz (22-11) have lost to an opponent which entered with a losing record came Oct. 28 against Phoenix, which was 0-1. That's one of only two defeats Utah has had against teams which are currently under .500.

Memphis (14-18) has been below the break-even mark since early November and went through December without posting a victory over a team which came in with a winning record.

Also playing in the Jazz's favor is that the Grizzlies have lost seven straight in Utah, dating to Jan. 24, 2007, by an average of 18.3 points. The Jazz have won 12 of the last 13 meetings overall, and Williams missed the only loss due to injury.

He's caused Memphis big problems, averaging 13.0 assists in his past 11 games against the Grizzlies and 24.0 points in the last four. The Jazz won 94-85 at home Dec. 6 in the only meeting this season behind 27 points from Williams, who continues to present a matchup problem for Memphis point guard Mike Conley.

"He is very tough and physical," said Conley, 25 pounds lighter than Williams. "He is a big point guard and when you put your hands on him he will get the foul, but if you don't he'll blow right by you because he's so big and strong."

Utah is 17-2 when Williams has at least nine assists, but he failed to post more than eight for a fourth straight game Thursday in a 100-89 road loss to the Trail Blazers.

The Jazz, who had 18 turnovers, got no closer than seven points in the fourth quarter and trailed by as many as 19.

"It was poor effort, all the way around," guard Raja Bell said. "You can talk it up all you want, but I thought we have to be tougher than that."

While it's unclear if Mehmet Okur or Andrei Kirilenko will return after being sidelined Thursday with back injuries, C.J. Miles hopes to come back after sitting out with the flu. Miles had 20 points in the last meeting with Memphis, and Utah is 13-1 this season when he scores at least 13.

The Grizzlies narrowly missed a chance to win their third straight Wednesday, losing 100-98 to Sacramento on Tyreke Evans' shot from midcourt at the buzzer. Memphis led for most of the second half and by as much as nine in the fourth quarter.

"Every time we made strides to take a lead, they would come back and make great plays," said Rudy Gay, who was 6 of 17 from the field. "That was basically the story of the game. If a guy hits a half-court shot, what else can you do?"

Zach Randolph had a season-high 35 points and 17 rebounds. He's averaged 21.8 points and 15.2 boards over the past five games.

Millsap scores 22 points, Jazz beat Grizzlies

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The start of the New Year meant much of the same for the Utah Jazz.

Fall behind early, rally behind the bench, then have All-Star Deron Williams bring it home.

That formula worked again Saturday night in a 98-92 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Williams scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and passed to rookie Gordon Hayward for a dunk to seal it with 18.9 seconds left as Utah won its eighth straight at home against the Grizzlies to improve to 23-11.

"Crunch time is when your best player steps up," forward Paul Millsap said about Williams. "He knew it was his time."

Millsap led the Jazz with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 13 in the first half when Utah built a 48-38 lead.

The biggest spark came from Utah's backups, which outscored the Grizzlies reserves 32-6.

"Our bench has been a strong point for us all season," Williams said of a unit led by Earl Watson, Ronnie Price and Gordon Hayward. "It's contagious. I wish the first group could do that. That way we could keep it going rather than have to have . . . the second group bring us back."

Price's jam and 3-pointer gave the Jazz a 38-28 second-quarter lead. Then Hayward showed how much he has grown as a player 34 games into the season.

"Basketball is a game of confidence," Hayward said. "Everybody in the NBA can play. It's whether they can play their own game and not go out there and think. I'm definitely trying to go out there and not think as much and just play."

He showed his athleticism on fast-break layups and a more aggressive side, capped by the authoritative dunk for Utah's final points.

"You try to go up soft, it's not going to work (in the NBA)," Hayward said. "For me, it's all about trying to learn. With each game, it's going to get better and better and I'm going to get better and better."

Williams said the team also is growing more confident in Hayward, who played nearly 30 minutes, including much of the fourth quarter when the game was tight.

"The minutes and the confidence is all he needed," Williams said about the former Butler star. "He's playing good, picking up on things. It means he's learning on the job."

Zach Randolph led Memphis with 27 points and 16 rebounds. O.J. Mayo, who was back in the starting lineup, added 18 but was 3 of 9 from 3-pointer range.

Both teams were missing key players because of the illness.

Memphis was without top scorer Rudy Gay (20.7 points). Gay dressed but did not play because of a stomach virus.

C.J. Miles, who sparked Utah with 20 points in a Dec. 6 win over Memphis, dressed but did not play because of flu-like symptoms.

Reserve Mehmet Okur missed his second straight game for Utah because of a back injury and the Jazz also lost another big man when Francisco Elson was ejected with 2:51 left in the first half after picking up two technicals protesting a foul against Marc Gasol.

"It happened so fast I don't think he realized what happened," Millsap said.

Utah would fall behind 8-0 to start the game but was even at 21 after the first quarter.

The Jazz led by as many as 13 points in the second half before Memphis fought back to take a 79-78 lead on Mayo's 3-pointer with 8 minutes remaining.

From there, the game went back and forth. It was tied at 81 and 83 before Williams got going, scoring 10 of Utah's next 15 points.

"We played pretty good for 46 minutes defensively," said Gasol, whose Grizzlies outrebounded Utah 43-35.

"We were getting stops, and then we were turning the ball over," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said of the Grizzlies' 19 turnovers. "Then when we started scoring, we couldn't get stops. They made some big plays. We just didn't get it done."

NOTES: Saturday was only the 16th time in his career that Williams failed to record an assist in a first half, and the first since his rookie season. ... Grizzlies G Mike Conley had X-rays of his ribs taken at halftime. They were negative and he played through the injury in the second half and finished with 17 points. ... The Grizzlies shot just 38.2 percent in the first half and committed 14 turnovers. ... The Grizzlies are now 1-10 in their last 11 games vs. the Jazz. ... Randolph had his 20th double-double of the season.

THE FACTS: Paul Millsap scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Utah Jazz to a 98-92 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.

The Jazz got a big boost from their bench players, most notably Gordon Hayward. The rookie from Butler had 13 points and four rebounds and played during the game's critical moments.

The Grizzlies, playing without leading scorer Rudy Gay (stomach virus), were led by Zach Randolph. He had 27 points and 16 rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "Our bench gave us a lift and kept us in the ballgame. We struggled to get things going in the first part (of the game). They gave us some life."

THE STAT: 32-6. The difference in the game was bench play, and Utah's reserves outscored Memphis' 32-6.

TURNING POINT: The Jazz were able to close out a game that had several momentum shifts. With a minute left in the game and Utah leading 94-91, Raja Bell collected an offensive rebound to keep a Jazz possession alive. Deron Williams then made two free throws with 44.7 seconds left in the contest and the Grizzlies never got closer than four the rest of the way. Both teams had chances to put the game away early, as Utah led by 13 points in the third quarter and Memphis held its largest lead at eight points in the first quarter.

QUOTABLE II: "We didn't make enough plays. We were getting stops and then we were turning the ball over. Then when we started scoring, we couldn't get stops. They made some big plays. We just didn't get it done."

HOT: The Grizzlies, after falling behind by 13 points, got back in the game by shooting 65 percent in the third quarter. Randolph led the effort with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting in the period. Millsap was hot throughout the game, as he shot 8-for-11.

NOT: The Jazz opened the game in a New Year's Day malaise. On their first five possessions they had three turnovers and missed two shots, falling behind 8-0. In that same quarter, the Grizzlies went nearly five minutes without making a basket, which occurred during a 10-0 run by the Jazz. O.J. Mayo shot 6-for-18 for the Grizzlies and Al Jefferson shot 3-for-12 for the Jazz.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Randolph continued his steady play, and is a must-start for fantasy owners. He topped both his scoring average (18.5) and rebounding average (12.6) against the Jazz, and it was his 20th double-double of the season.

GOOD MOVE: Sloan played Hayward instead of a struggling Andrei Kirilenko in the fourth quarter, and the move paid off. Hayward had two dunks while recording five points and two rebounds in the final period.

BAD MOVE: Jazz reserve Francisco Elson picked up two technical fouls late in the second quarter after arguing with officials over a personal foul and was ejected. Memphis' Tony Allen also got a technical foul early in the fourth quarter with the Jazz leading 73-72 and it could have been a momentum-changing mistake. The Grizzlies, however, stayed within striking distance of the Jazz until the game's final moments.

ROOKIE WATCH: Hayward, who has scored in double figures in three straight games, is earning Sloan's trust and playing important minutes for the Jazz. He played nearly 30 minutes against the Grizzlies. Jeremy Evans made a brief appearance for the Jazz and recorded his signature alley-oop dunk. For the Grizzlies, Greivis Vasquez had four points on 2-for-2 shooting in less than 10 minutes.

NOTABLE: Jazz forward C.J. Miles dressed for the game after missing the team's last two contests with the flu, but did not play. The Jazz have defeated Memphis eight straight times and taken 13 of the last 14 meetings between the two teams at home. Williams didn't record an assist in the first half, and it was the first time since his rookie season that has happened.
