Nets-Bulls Preview

The Chicago Bulls were one of the few teams to struggle against the New Jersey Nets last season. The addition of Carlos Boozer should help remedy those troubles.

Boozer has had some impressive performances lately - and against the Nets in recent years - and he'll look to lead the Bulls to a 12th win in 14 games Friday against New Jersey.

After missing the first month of the season with a broken hand, Boozer has given Chicago (20-10) a needed physical presence in the post and has been instrumental to the team's surge. He's averaging 27.8 points and 12.3 rebounds in his last four games.

The Bulls lost their first two games following his return but have since won 11 of 13, with Boozer and All-Star point guard Derrick Rose starting to jell.

"He is teaching me," said Rose, averaging 24.5 points and 8.8 assists in the last six games. "He knows sometimes he doesn't need to set the pick or he can slip if I just drive at his man and his man stays with me I can just bounce pass and he has his left hand. Everything is coming to us, but we've got to continue to do it."

The Bulls defeated Milwaukee 90-77 on Tuesday to move 10 games over .500 for the first time since finishing the 2006-07 season 49-33, and now they face a New Jersey team that is 72 games below .500 since the start of last season.

Although the Nets went 12-70 in 2009-10, they managed to take two of three from Chicago for their only season series win over any opponent. One of those victories came at the United Center, the Nets' lone road victory in a stretch of 28 games away from New Jersey.

A major reason the Bulls struggled in last season's defeats to the Nets is because they were outscored by an average of 13.0 points in the paint. They should have better luck inside with the 6-foot-9 Boozer, who is averaging 29.7 points on 74.5 percent shooting and 9.3 rebounds in his last three games against New Jersey.

The Nets (9-23) arrive in Chicago following a sloppy 114-93 loss to Oklahoma City on Wednesday, their third straight defeat by at least 14 points.

Devin Harris and Brook Lopez each scored 19 points against the Thunder but also combined for seven of New Jersey's 23 turnovers. The second and third quarters were especially discouraging for the Nets, as they had 16 turnovers to only five assists while being outscored 64-46.

"We're not in good rhythm right now and we're going to have to break out of it here sometime soon," said coach Avery Johnson, whose Nets have lost 12 of 13 on the road.

All these turnovers have put extra pressure on New Jersey's defense, which is already struggling.

The Nets are yielding an average of 107.7 points on 52.5 percent shooting during their skid after limiting teams to an average of 90.7 points on 41.3 percent shooting in splitting their previous six games. If New Jersey allows 100 points for a fourth straight game, that could spell trouble, as the Bulls have won each of their last seven contests when reaching the century mark.

"We're in a bad cycle defensively," Johnson said. "The turnovers don't help our defense at all. We think we're pretty good when we get in the half court and get our defense set, but we're not as good when we're turning the ball over."

Boozer leads Bulls past Nets 90-81

CHICAGO (AP) Never mind Carlos Boozer's early foul trouble. Or those missed shots.

No matter how difficult it was, Derrick Rose insisted wins like this show just how good the Bulls are.

Boozer scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and Chicago won for the 12th time in 14 games, pulling away late to beat the New Jersey Nets 90-81 on Friday afternoon.

Luol Deng and Rose scored 19 apiece, and the Bulls made enough shots down the stretch after struggling from the field for much of the game.

"It shows how good we are," Rose said. "We still won this game. In the past, it usually took us like to shoot 70 percent, 60 percent, and that usually comes out to a win. We're just grateful for this win and we'll take it."

Brook Lopez led New Jersey with 19 points. Travis Outlaw and Stephen Graham each scored 16, but the Nets dropped their fourth straight.

"That's a really good team," Lopez said. "We battled them the entire game."

Outscored by a combined 51 points over the previous three games, the Nets hung in against the Central division leaders.

New Jersey was within 75-73 after a tip-in by Derrick Favors midway through the fourth quarter but simply couldn't pull this one out.

Boozer converted a three-point play, Rose hit two free throws and just like that, the Bulls were up 80-73 with 5:24 left.

Rose answered a basket by Devin Harris with an off-balance floater along the baseline. After Graham nailed the jumper, Chicago got a layup by Kurt Thomas and a dunk from Boozer that made it 86-77 with just under three minutes left.

"If you really watched this game, our guys battled tonight," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "The game was physical. We really played hard against Boozer and those guys inside."

While the Nets shot 39 percent, the Bulls (39.5) were barely better. Neither team could connect from the outside, with New Jersey going 3 for 13 on 3-pointers and Chicago hitting 6 of 22.

The Nets also held a 46-43 rebounding edge, but the Bulls came out on top.

"It wasn't an easy win by any means," Boozer said. "We fought hard. They fought hard, take our hats off to them. We did a great job in the last five or six minutes of the game of getting good stops and cutting up their zone defense. We got a couple layups, couple free throws, couple J's and continued to get stops from the defensive side and got a little cushion, enough for us to win."

Rose struggled from the field, going 5 of 16, but chipped in with nine assists.

Boozer, who missed practice on Thursday for personal reasons, had his way after picking up two early fouls, going 8 of 14 from the field while turning in his fifth double-double in six games.

Deng came up big, particularly in the third quarter when he scored 10 points, but the Bulls had a tough time putting away New Jersey.

They would go up by eight or 10, only to see the Nets come back, and coach Tom Thibodeau wasn't thrilled about that. He's not thrilled, either, about the lack of fastbreak points. The Bulls are struggling in that area with Joakim Noah recuperating from right hand surgery and got just nine on Friday.

"Jo is a great runner, but Carlos is also a great runner so we have to be able to get him up the floor quicker," Thibodeau said. "Kurt, we're asking him to play great defense, rebound, block out. The thing that Kurt does very well, he trails in. ... We should still be able to score a lot quicker than we are right now."

NOTES: Nets backup PG Jordan Farmar sat out with a bruised right knee. The team was awaiting the MRI results. New Jersey also was without F Troy Murphy, who stayed at the hotel with a viral infection and flu. Coach Avery Johnson said Murphy will fly home and miss the game at Minnesota on Saturday. ... The Bulls' four-game homestand continues with Cleveland on Saturday before wrapping up against Toronto on Tuesday. They then visit the Nets the next day.

Nets-Bulls notebook

THE FACTS: It took a long time, but the host Bulls (21-10) finally put away the visiting New Jersey Nets 90-81 in a New Year's Eve afternoon affair at the United Center. Bulls forward Carlos Boozer scored 20 points and had 15 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. The Nets (9-24) were within two points with less than seven minutes to go before the Bulls pulled away. New Jersey center Brook Lopez had 19 points for the Nets.

THE FACTS II: The Bulls are 12-2 in their last 14 games. They are 5-2 since losing center Joakim Noah to injury. The Nets played without two key bench players, Jordan Farmar (right knee injury) and Troy Murphy (viral infection).

QUOTABLE: "I thought we had a phenomenal December. Hopefully we can carry that into 2011 and have a good January."

THE STAT: Neither team managed to shoot 40 percent from the field. The Nets were 30-for-77 (39.0 percent) and the Bulls were 30-for-76 (39.5 percent).

TURNING POINT: Leading 75-73 with six minutes remaining, the Bulls passed the ball around the perimeter until Kyle Korver faked a jumper, dribbled past his defender and passed the ball to Boozer inside for a three-point play. Three minutes later, Korver did it again, getting the defender to bite on his head fake, dribbling once toward the hoop before finding Boozer again for a dunk and an 86-77 Bulls lead with 2:52 left.

HOT: Boozer extended his 20-point scoring streak to five games with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting. In his last five games Boozer has averaged 26.2 points and just under 13 rebounds.

NOT: Bulls guard Derrick Rose was 5-for-16 from the field but finished with 19 points and nine assists.

QUOTABLE II: "For us to win, Devin [Harris] has to score. It would have been nice if he could have gotten 20 out there tonight."

GOOD MOVE: In need of help because of a short bench, Johnson used 7-foot center Johan Petro for more than 12 minutes Friday and Petro provided six rebounds and four points spelling starter Lopez.

NOTABLE: Noah, the Bulls' injured starting center, got a start on what might be a terrific second career when he spent the third quarter broadcasting the game with the Bulls' TV crew of Neal Funk and Bill Wennington.
