A coaching change might have been what the Charlotte Bobcats needed to start winning games.

The Bobcats look for a season-high third straight victory under new coach Paul Silas while trying to continue their recent success against the visiting Golden State Warriors on Friday afternoon.

Charlotte (11-19) ranked near the bottom of the league averaging 91.8 points under Larry Brown, but the Bobcats averaged 103.0 in wins over Detroit and Cleveland since Silas and his up-tempo offensive system replaced the fired Brown on Dec. 22.

The Bobcats are 6-3 when scoring at least 100 points.

"I think everybody is loving it right now," said guard D.J. Augustin, who is averaging 13.6 points but has totaled 55 on 20-of-29 shooting the last two games.

"Before, we were trying to run the play all the way through and getting shot clock violations," Augustin added. "Now guys are getting open shots and taking them."

Augustin had 28 points and Stephen Jackson scored a season-high 38 in a 101-92 victory over the Cavaliers on Wednesday.

"It's a good feeling knowing the coaches are allowing you to use your brain and make basketball plays and not be sort of a robot out there," said Jackson, averaging 30.5 points the last two contests.

Silas, the 67-year-old former Charlotte Hornets coach, won't take too much credit for the Bobcats' recent success.

"Well, I'm the greatest coach in this industry!" Silas said. "I told those guys from the start that attitude, confidence, and going out there and playing are what's most important."

The Bobcats should be confident while trying for a fourth consecutive victory over Golden State (12-19).

Even without Silas' guidance, the Bobcats have matched Golden State's up-tempo style, averaging 111.0 points while winning four of five meetings.

Gerald Wallace, who had nine points and 10 rebounds Wednesday after missing five games with a sprained ankle, has averaged 22.0 points and 9.5 boards in his last four versus Golden State.

The Bobcats should have a good idea of what to expect from the Warriors after Silas' son, Stephen, left his assistant coaching position with Golden State to join his father's staff.

Golden State had its season-high three-game winning streak snapped with a 103-93 loss at Atlanta in Wednesday's opener of a five-game trip. The Warriors are 4-13 on the road, where they have lost 11 of 13.

"We didn't have the necessary energy that we needed to play at a very high level," coach Keith Smart told the Warriors' official website. "We'll move on to the next game."

Though Dorell Wright has averaged 30.0 points the last two games after posting a career-high 32 with 11 rebounds at Atlanta, the Warriors need guards Monta Ellis (25.5 ppg) and Stephen Curry (18.8) to bounce back from a poor outing.

Ellis and Curry each shot 4 of 13 from the field and combined for 21 points. Ellis has averaged 25.0 points on 58.0 percent shooting in his last three games versus Charlotte.

Curry, who grew up in Charlotte, has averaged 10.0 points and shot 26.8 percent in three games since missing six with an ankle injury. He totaled 47 points in two meetings with the Bobcats last season.

Warriors hold off Bobcats, 96-95

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Monta came up with big plays and then made a mistake that nearly cost the Golden State Warriors the win.

Ellis scored 25 points and the Warriors overcame his late blunder to hold off a rally in the final minute and beat the Charlotte Bobcats 96-95 on Friday.

"What can I say?" Ellis said. "We still won. It's all that matters. Everything else is blanked out. We did a lot of great things and played well together. We just won it as a team and ground it out."

Trailing 96-90, Charlotte made a run in the final minute, all keyed by Stephen Jackson, who finished with 22 points. He hit a free throw to begin the run, Gerald Henderson tipped in Jackson's miss, then Boris Diaw hit a layup off Jackson's inside feed to pull the Bobcats within one point with 14.5 seconds remaining.

Then came the blunder - Ellis was called for an offensive foul after pushing off Henderson on an inbounds play with 8.5 seconds left, giving Charlotte another a chance.

But the Bobcats' planned move - getting the ball to D.J. Augustin - didn't materialize, forcing Jackson to put up a desperation 3-pointer, which clanged off the back of the rim and bounced out of bounds as the horn sounded.

"(Augustin) was supposed to get the ball," a despondent Jackson said after the game. "We were going to make a quick pick and let him try to make a play."

Stephen Curry, who earned AP All-America honors while playing at nearby Davidson, hit four 3-pointers and scored 24 points in his homecoming, while Dorell Wright added 17 for Golden State, which won for the fourth time in its last five games.

"Our guys did an excellent job of keeping their composure to play the quarter out," Warriors coach Keith Smart said. "On the road, things can happen crazy. But we managed to keep it together and get a win."

Gerald Wallace added 20 points, D.J. Augustin 12, and Diaw and Henderson added 10 points each for the Bobcats, which trailed by as many as 11 points midway through the third quarter and fell short of getting a third consecutive win under interim coach Paul Silas.

Ellis didn't shoot particularly well against Charlotte - 11 of 23 from the field, and just 2 of 5 on 3-pointers - but he came up with the points when the Warriors needed them.

His layup with 7:48 left in the third quarter gave Golden State a 64-53 lead, its biggest of the second half. After the Bobcats whittled down a seven-point lead down to 91-90 with 3:43 left in the fourth quarter, Ellis dropped in a pair of layups during a five-point surge to give the Warriors a six-point cushion with 1:20 remaining.

Silas, who replaced Larry Brown on Dec. 22, had won his first two games - 105-100 over Detroit on Monday, and 101-92 over Cleveland on Wednesday. But getting that third win proved to be a challenge, as Golden State hit its first seven shots and raced to an 11-point lead early in the first quarter.

"We couldn't play behind against this team because they get off to fast starts," Smart said. "I needed a quick start for our team to get them chasing us and let them play from behind. We really got off to a great lead and we played the way we needed to."

The Bobcats clawed their way back into contention, leading twice - the last time at 36-32 on Henderson's short jumper with 6:49 left in the second quarter - and tying the score four times. Curry then stifled any further Charlotte rallies in the first half, scoring eight of his 11 second-quarter points in a four-minute span.

His 3-pointer put Golden State up 45-40 with 4 minutes left, another 3 less than a minute later pushed the margin to 48-44, and a fastbreak layup with 36 seconds remaining gave the Warriors a 52-46 lead at the break.

NOTES: Friday's game was the first time that Charlotte assistant coach Stephen Silas - son of the Bobcats' interim coach - faced his former team. The younger Silas had been a Warriors assistant for more than four seasons until joining his father's staff earlier this week. ... Among those attending Friday's game was Bob McKillop, Curry's head coach at Davidson, and the entire Wildcats roster. Curry and Warriors teammate Reggie Williams watched Davidson play St. John's (Maine) the day before, and McKillop returned the favor Friday. ... Jackson and Ellis exchanged a big hug at midcourt before tipoff. The two were teammates with the Warriors before Jackson was traded to the Bobcats in 2009. ... Charlotte C DeSagana Diop came out of the game midway through the second quarter with a straight right Achilles' tendon. His status for the Bobcats' home game against Miami on Jan. 3 was unknown. ... Bobcats F Tyrus Thomas missed his second straight game with sprained right wrist, and Silas said that his return to the lineup is "day to day."

THE FACTS: Monta Ellis scored a game-high 25 points and his backcourt mate Stephen Curry added 24 points as the Golden State Warriors escaped with a 96-95 win over the Charlotte Bobcats Friday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena. Stephen Jackson led the way for the Bobcats with 22 points, but missed an open three on the team's final possession that would have won the game.

QUOTABLE: "He thought the defender was off of him and that he had a good luck at the three. I think we kind of baited him into that and thankfully he missed it. Nine times out of ten he's going to drive to the basket and get to the hole and get fouled. We had that one time and it worked out for us."

TURNING POINT: Strong start for Golden State. The Warriors came out of the gate on fire. Golden State made it's first seven shots of the game and jumped out to an 18-7 lead after just four minutes of action which gave them confidence and put the Bobcats in a position they hadn't been in under new coach Paul Silas.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Ellis scored a game-high 25 points and added five assists, four rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Charlotte native Curry needed about 70 tickets for friends and family. In addition to the guests of Curry there was an abundance of fans sporting the red-and-black colors of Davidson College his alma mater. Carolina Panthers wide receiver was seated courtside.

BAD MOVE: Deactivating Kwame Brown. The move by Silas left Charlotte with just two low post players. DeSagana Diop left the game with a strained right achilles in the second quarter and when Nazr Mohammed picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter it left the Bobcats extremely thin in the paint.

ROOKIE WATCH: Ekpe Udoh was the only rookie to see action Friday afternoon. The Warriors forward scored four points, grabbed three rebounds and had a block and an assist. Jeremy Lin was playing for the Warriors' D-League affiliate while Charlotte's Sherron Collins was a DNP-CD.

NOTABLE: Diop strained his right achilles tendon in the second quarter and did not return. Stephen Jackson scored 20-plus points for the fourth straight game and the 13th time this season. D.J. Augustin is averaging 22.7 points since the hiring of Paul Silas while Jackson is averaging 27.7 per game. Curry scored more than 20 points for the first time since December 7. Dorell Wright was in double figures for the 27th time this season after a 17-point effort Friday. David Lee was held to just eight points, his lowest output since December 5.
