Lakers-Spurs Preview

As unhappy as Kobe Bryant sounded on Christmas, he might have a tough time feeling much better after this game.

Coming off a pair of embarrassing losses, the Los Angeles Lakers visit the league-best San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night for the first time this season.

While no team has a better record than the Spurs (26-4), who already had 11 losses by this point last season, the Lakers (21-9) are off to a disappointing start. They opened 23-4 last season en route to the best record in the Western Conference and a second straight championship, but now they're at risk of losing 10 games by the end of December for the first time since 2007.

Los Angeles followed a 98-79 home loss to a sub-.500 Milwaukee team with a 96-80 defeat to Miami in a Christmas matchup that didn't live up to the hype. The Lakers were held to 14 points in the first quarter and trailed by double digits for most of the second half.

"It's like these games mean more to our opponents than they do to us," said Bryant, held to 17 points. "I think we need to get that straight - play with more focus, put more (emphasis) on these games. I don't like it. ... We know what we're capable of doing, and that's part of the problem."

Bryant, averaging 16.8 points over the past four games, stressed the team must do a better job of working out its problems in practice - something the Lakers tried to accomplish during two days off between the Heat game and this one.

"Individually, you have to make that decision on what's important," Bryant said. "The game has to be the most important thing. ... This is serious stuff. You don't just have two rings and say, 'That's enough. We're satisfied with what we've got.' I'm not going to let that slide."

The Spurs couldn't help but look ahead to this matchup even before their most recent game, a 94-80 win over Washington on Sunday.

"We talked about it this morning at shootaround; make sure we respect them and that we use this game to prepare for the Lakers," point guard Tony Parker said. "We have a big game against them, obviously, and we're going to have to match their energy. I'm sure they're going to come in and look to bounce back from their loss against Miami."

San Antonio, which had a 10-game win streak snapped in its previous game at Orlando, has won 10 in a row at home but faces a Lakers team which has won five straight road games.

The teams split four meetings last season, with Bryant appearing in three and averaging 20.7 points - his fourth-worst mark against any opponent.

The bigger key to the series was the Tim Duncan-Lamar Odom matchup. Each veteran forward reached double digits in rebounds in every meeting, but Duncan outscored Odom on average 24.5 to 9.5 in the Spurs' two wins while Odom had a 17.5-11.0 edge in the Lakers' two victories.

Duncan has been playing limited minutes lately, averaging 8.7 points in the last three games. Odom has averaged 12.3 in his last three after scoring 19.1 per game through his first nine in December.

Odom has missed 17 of his last 20 3-point attempts, and the Lakers are shooting 27.3 percent from beyond the arc in their last four games.

"We have to go back and figure things out," Odom said after the Miami loss, "look ourselves in the mirror, understand what's going on, and fix it."

NBA-best Spurs rout Bryant and reeling Lakers

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili were on the bench before the final horn, and not because of their bad shooting nights. That's how easy it was for the San Antonio Spurs.

On the other end, Kobe Bryant was also out of the game early. That's how bad it's getting for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Tony Parker scored 23 points and the Spurs, backing up their NBA-best record against the defending champions, beat a still-frustrated Bryant and the reeling Lakers 97-82 on Tuesday night.

"It's always great to beat the champion," Ginobili said.

The Spurs improved to 27-4, and if there are any doubts about that record being inflated, they can likely put those to rest this week. Next up is Dallas, one of the only teams to beat them this season, followed by games against Oklahoma City, New York and Boston.

The Lakers, meanwhile, can't seem to beat anyone.

It was another humiliation for the Lakers, who lost a week ago by 19 at home to lowly Milwaukee. That was followed by letting LeBron James and the Miami Heat leave the Staples Center with another easy victory on Christmas Day, in one of the highest-rated televised NBA games in recent years.

Bryant railed on his team's lack of focus following the Heat loss, but had a more quiet disappointment after the Spurs became the third straight team to crush the Lakers.

Bryant had 21 points on 8-of-27 shooting, at one point missing 13 shots in a row. He answered questions in clipped sentences before saying he was confident the Lakers can steer out of their stunning tailspin.

"I'm just (mad) at myself," Bryant said. "(Mad) I didn't play well."

He wasn't the only one on the Lakers. Bryant alluded to Derek Fisher's technical foul, after getting into a confrontation with Richard Jefferson, about the attitude throughout the team.

The Lakers dropped to 21-10, marking the first time since 2007 they've reached 10 losses this early.

"We're all moody," Bryant said. "Fish got a tech today and he's the basketball version of Barack Obama. Everybody's a little moody right now."

DeJuan Blair had 17 points and 15 rebounds, leading an unlikely Spurs cast that buried the Lakers in the fourth. Jefferson scored 17 points and George Hill had 10 while the Spurs coasted toward the end, almost remarkably, while Duncan and Ginobili were reduced to non-factors on offense.

Duncan was 1 of 7 from the field and had two points. Ginobili made only 3 of 12, finishing with nine points.

"It means Tony Parker was amazing tonight," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum had 10 points apiece for the Lakers. When the buzzer sounded, Bryant was the first off the bench and headed back to the locker room.

It's only December, but Bryant hasn't treated the slump as a mere blip.

After James and Dwyane Wade coasted to a 14-point win in Los Angeles on Saturday, Bryant seethed over a second straight home loss. He said it was as though the games "mean more to our opponents than they do us" and grumbled over the focus of the two-time defending champs.

Bryant came out like he was trying to set an example. He scored eight of the Lakers' first 10 points - all within the first 3 minutes - and attempted 10 shots in the first quarter alone.

Covered by Hill in the second quarter, Bryant drew his third technical foul in three games when the two confronted each other under the basket. They continued talking back to the other end of the court.

"I just wanted him to know that you might be an NBA All-Star and the MVP, but I won't back down from anybody," Hill said.

For all that intensity, Bryant had a miserable night.

After making four of his first five shots, Bryant missed 13 shots in a row and turned the ball over four times. The slump finally ended with 4:44 left in the third quarter on a wide-open 3-pointer.

The Spurs' stars weren't faring any better. But they had help.

Duncan and Ginobili were a combined 1 for 13 in the first half, with the Argentine clanking four 3-pointers and Duncan unable to finish near the rim against Pau Gasol.

Notes: It was a rare sellout at the AT&T Center, which has seldom been packed this season despite the historic franchise start for the Spurs. ... Sixteen other teams in NBA history had as good or better record as the Spurs through 31 games, most recently the 2007-08 Boston Celtics (28-3).

Lakers-Spurs notebook

THE FACTS: Tony Parker scored 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting, and San Antonio limited Los Angeles to 28-percent shooting in the second half as the Spurs defeated the Lakers 97-82 Tuesday night at AT&T Center in a Western Conference showdown that didn't live up to its billing. Lakers (21-10) have lost three in a row -- all by double digits -- and have fallen into a tie for third best in the West along with Utah. The Spurs (27-4) are six games better and have won 12 of their last 13.

QUOTABLE: "I couldn't put the ball in the basket, and it snowballed from there. It's my responsibility to make them. Things just kind of fed off me not being able to make shots, and everybody else started not being able to make shots. I just gotta put the ball in the damn hole. It's my job and I gotta do it."

THE STAT: Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili combined to shoot 4-of-19 for 11 points, but the rest of the Spurs went 33-of-68 (48.5 percent).

TURNING POINT: Even though Bryant (he took 27 shots to score 21 points) missed his final nine shots of the first half, the Lakers were ahead by two. DeJuan Blair set the tone with his energy from the opening whistle of the third quarter. In a 4 1/2-minute span early in the second half he scored six points in the paint, grabbed four rebounds and had a pair of steals and turned that halftime deficit into a five-point lead.

QUOTABLE II: "We played excellent team defense, and that's where we had been lacking. That was the most important part of the night for us. Tony Parker put us on his shoulders for a lot of the game, so we were able to hang in there even though Manu and Timmy didn't have their best offensive night."

HOT: Blair played 10 minutes in the third quarter and went 4-of-5 for nine points. He finished with season highs in both 17 points and 15 rebounds.

NOT: The two MVPs went ice cold. After hitting three of his first four shots, Bryant missed 13 in a row. He finished 8-of-27 and had five turnovers. Duncan opened 0-for-6, not hitting anything from the floor until 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the third quarter, and finished 1-of-7 for two points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Parker had a 20-point outing for the second-straight game. Though he only had three assists, he had a season-high 14 in his previous game when he scored 20 points.

GOOD MOVE: In just his second game back after missing four in a row because of a right big toe sprain, George Hill pushed to play 27 minutes. He got so winded he asked to come out in the fourth quarter after hitting a short jumper that gave the Spurs a 15-point lead just under the five-minute mark. But in between the time he asked for a blow and the time he actually got off the floor he hustled for a steal and a blocked shot of Bryant. Hill had nine points, six rebounds and three blocked shots in the second half.

BAD MOVE: Derek Fisher got perturbed when Richard Jefferson bumped into him and got an easy bucket underneath that gave San Antonio an eight-point lead in the third quarter. Fisher took off with the ball after Jefferson and was called for a technical foul. On the next trip down the floor for LA, Fisher was called for an offensive foul. Phil Jackson put in subs that included Matt Barnes, Shannon Brown and Steve Blake and the Spurs went on to lead by 14 before Bryant and Pau Gasol made it back to the court.

ROOKIE WATCH: Gary Neal went 3-of-10, but the shots that went down were the ones from past the 3-point line. One of those got a high-five from Popovich and another came when the 24-second clock was dwindling.

NOTABLE: The Spurs finished December with a 10-0 record at home. If the Lakers lose Wednesday night in New Orleans, it'll mark their second four-game losing streak of the season.
