The Charlotte Bobcats used a long layoff to make a coaching change. They didn't need to go far for the hire.

Paul Silas returns to the bench for the first time in over five years Monday night when the struggling Bobcats host the Detroit Pistons.

Charlotte (9-19) saw its season-worst losing streak stretch to four with Tuesday's 99-81 loss to Oklahoma City, getting outscored 31-12 in the fourth quarter. The skid is part of a 1-6 stretch that includes three losses by more than 30 points.

With five days off between games, changes were made Wednesday as coach Larry Brown stepped down and was replaced by Silas on an interim basis.

"This was a difficult decision for both of us, but one that needed to be made," owner Michael Jordan said. "I want to thank Larry for everything he has done for our team. He has played a key role in this organization's development including coaching us to our first-ever playoff appearance last season."

Silas, 67, is known for coaching the Hornets for five seasons, with the final one coming in 2002-03 after their relocation from Charlotte to New Orleans. He last coached in the NBA with Cleveland in 2005.

Silas has made Charlotte his permanent home and said that he would not have come out of retirement for any other job, calling it "a dream come true."

He's attempting to turn the Bobcats into an up-tempo, offensive-minded team in an effort to help improve upon their 91.8 points per game, ranking 29th in the NBA. They've averaged 80.2 points over the last four games.

"I want to bring some energy to this ball club," Silas said. "I want us to get up and down and let it all hang out. If they don't want to get up and down, they can come sit down by me.

"The guys just have to get out and play and believe in themselves and believe that I believe in them. I've found that if you have a confident player, it's unbelievable what he can do."

Stephen Jackson, the team leader with 17.3 points per game, is confident in Silas' system - a departure from the scheme under Brown. He averaged over 20 points playing a similar system with Golden State from 2007-09.

"It's rejuvenating," Jackson said. "The styles are like night and day. Hopefully this will bring some life to us and give us some confidence and get us playing well again. Up-tempo, we've got a great group of young guys and this fits their style. Hopefully we can do a good job at it and enjoy it because it's definitely fun."

The Bobcats have won their last two home games over the Pistons (10-20), but lost 97-90 in Detroit on Nov. 5 despite getting 28 points from Jackson.

The Pistons are among the worst road teams in the league at 3-12. However, they won 115-93 at Toronto in their most recent away contest Wednesday, ending an eight-game slide as the visitor.

Detroit failed to build on that Sunday, falling 95-92 in overtime at home to Chicago. A glaring weakness against the Bulls was in the paint, where the Pistons were outscored 46-34 while being outrebounded 55-39.

Ben Gordon is averaging 25.5 points in his last four meetings with Charlotte, scoring 20 on Nov. 5. The guard hasn't been effective over his last two games overall, though, totaling 11 points while making 4 of 13 shots.

Pistons 100, Bobcats 105

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) D.J. Augustin scored 27 points, Stephen Jackson added 23 and the new-look, uptempo Charlotte Bobcats held on to beat the Detroit Pistons 105-100 on Monday night to give interim coach Paul Silas a victory in his debut.

With Silas using new combinations and forcing the pace after replacing the fired Larry Brown last week, the Bobcats built a 23-point lead and then nearly wasted it all.

Ben Gordon missed two tying 3-point attempts in the closing seconds before Tyrus Thomas' two free throws with 1 second left finally put it away for the Bobcats, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Charlie Villanueva scored 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting for the Pistons, who lost their second straight.

The Bobcats made Silas sweat out the victory in his first game on the bench since he was fired by Cleveland more than five years ago. Silas, a former Clippers, Hornets and Cavaliers coach who had been living in the Charlotte area, had been assisting his neighbor coach 13- and 14-year-old kids when owner Michael Jordan called last week.

The Pistons, seemingly out of it after Charlotte's dominant second quarter, got within 101-100 on Chris Wilcox's two free throws with 1:01 left. Thomas responded with a putback of Augustin's missed layup and a block of Will Bynum's layup on the next two possessions.

Augustin then let the shot clock run down too far before feeding Boris Diaw for a forced 3-pointer that didn't hit the rim with 14 seconds left.

Gordon missed a straightaway 3-pointer before Thomas failed to put it away with two misses at the free throw line. Gordon got another look from the right wing, but it bounced out before Thomas hit two straight at the line.

Augustin hit 10-of-15 shots and didn't commit a turnover after often being a target of the demanding Brown. Jackson added nine rebounds and nearly had a dubious triple-double thanks to nine turnovers.

Thomas added 14 points and five blocks as Charlotte won despite playing again without Gerald Wallace (ankle).

Gordon and Tayshaun Prince added 17 points apiece and Wilcox scored 15 for the Pistons, who were outrebounded 46-32.

While the Bobcats hadn't played in nearly a week, the Pistons were coming off an overtime loss to Chicago a night earlier and came out sluggish against a team with a renewed focus.

Jordan dismissed Brown on Wednesday, a night after a loss to Oklahoma City left Brown trashing his players and himself again. The Bobcats entered Monday's game having lost six of seven, with three of the losses by 30 points or more.

Silas immediately tried to push the pace, changing the shot clocks in practice from 24 to 14 seconds. He then tweaked with the rotation, giving heavy minutes to DeSagana Diop and benching Kwame Brown.

"Any time you lose games by 30 points, something is wrong," Silas said before the game. "I didn't see them getting up and down the court. They didn't seem like they were really into the game for whatever reason."

While Jordan wasn't in his courtside seat, the Bobcats showed success unseen in weeks with odd combinations.

Diop, mostly dressed in a suit on game nights this season, was blocking three shots and even hitting a mid-range jumper. Little-used Matt Carroll contributed. barely in-the-rotation Derrick Brown had an acrobatic alley-oop dunk.

It all came in a 24-2 run to start the second quarter that snapped a tie and had the small crowd on its feet.

Silas, greeted warmly when he was introduced, was one of the most popular figures on the Hornets when the city shunned owner George Shinn as he prepared to move the team to New Orleans.

Notes: Silas said he left a phone message with Larry Brown but hasn't heard back. "It's hard. I've been there, getting fired," Silas said. "Do you want that team to do well? Quite honestly, no. I can understand, but I hope to talk to him soon." ... Kuester, an assistant under Brown on Detroit's 2004 NBA title team, did speak to his former boss shortly after he was let go last week. "He's hanging in there," Kuester said. "I'm very sad that it happened, because I always look forward to coming to Charlotte for a number of reasons. He was one of them." ... Kuester picked up a fourth-quarter technical foul.

THE FACTS: D.J. Augustin scored a season-high 27 points and Paul Silas earned a victory in his first game as interim coach as the Charlotte Bobcats picked up a 105-100 win over the Detroit Pistons Monday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlie Villanueva scored 25 points to lead Detroit while Stephen Jackson added 23 for the Bobcats who snapped four-game losing streak.

QUOTABLE: "D.J. [Augustin] was just outstanding. You have to have confidence and he had lost that. The confidence was back tonight for him. He made some unbelievable plays, hit some great shots and played some good defense."

THE STAT: Rebounds. The Bobcats dominated the paint in Monday's victory. Charlotte outrebounded the Pistons 46-32 and all 10 players who saw action picked up a board. Charlotte collected a total of 11 offensive rebounds which accounted for 18 points and also outscored Detroit 46-38 in the paint.

TURNING POINT: Start of the second quarter. Charlotte came out and blitzed the Pistons with a 23-2 run to open the second quarter. The Bobcats scored the first 13 points of the quarter and made 10-for-14 to open the second stanza. Tyrus Thomas had six points and Shaun Livingston and Derrick Brown each added four.

QUOTABLE II: "I want the ball. I'm going to take the shot and I'm going to take it with confidence. I don't mind. If I don't take the shot then I'll make the play with somebody else. That's part of being a leader."

HOT: Three pointers. The teams combined to shoot 21-for-38 from behind the arc for a 55.3 percent. Villanueva sank five triples while Ben Gordon added four for the Pistons. For Charlotte, both Augustin and Jackson sank four 3-pointers.

NOT: Charlotte turnovers. Despite the win and the change in the coaching staff Charlotte still struggled to hold onto the ball. The Bobcats committed 24 turnovers which the Pistons turned into 31 points. Jackson accounted for nine of those turnovers which was a career high for him while Tyrus Thomas had six of the team's total.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Augustin and Villanueva. Charlotte's Augustin scored a season-best 27 points on 10-for-15 shooting including 4-for-6 from behind the arc. He also added four assists with zero turnovers and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. On the other bench, Villanueva was on fire for the Pistons. He scored 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting including a perfect five-for-five from the three-point line. He added three rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block on the night.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Charlotte's interim head coach Paul Silas received a loud ovation as he was introduced during the pregame festivities. Silas was a popular coach of the Charlotte Hornets prior to his hiring last week after Larry Brown's dismissal. The Nature Boy Ric Flair was seated courtside at the game.

ROOKIE WATCH: Charlotte's only rookie Sherron Collins was inactive while Detroit's Terrico White was also inactive. The lone rookie to see the court was Greg Monroe with three points and six rebounds in 13 minutes of action.

NOTABLE: Charlotte is now 5-3 when scoring more than 100 points and 5-1 when shooting better than .500 in a game. This was Augustin's fifth game of 20 or more points while Jackson has reached that number 11 times. Detroit's Chris Wilcox had season bests of 15 points and eight rebounds. Tayshaun Prince was in double figures for the 26th time this season while Gordon was in double figures for the 18th time this season. Tyrus Thomas scored 14 points and swatted five shots in 23 minutes off the bench for Charlotte.
