The Philadelphia 76ers have come closer than anyone to knocking off the Celtics during Boston's 13-game winning streak.

While that may have been Philadelphia at its best, its latest game certainly represented the worst.

Boston looks to extend the NBA's longest run of success this season Wednesday night against the visiting 76ers, who will have a 45-point defeat fresh in their minds as they look to avenge their last-second loss to the Celtics.

The Celtics (22-4) have rarely been tested during their 13 consecutive victories, shooting 52.1 percent and winning by more than five points all but three times.

Boston shot 55.9 percent at Philadelphia on Dec. 9, but still had to sweat out its ninth straight win. Kevin Garnett banked in a shot off Rajon Rondo's alley-oop pass with 1.4 seconds left to lift the Celtics to a 102-101 victory.

"What a heartbreaking loss," 76ers coach Doug Collins said. "They have so many different ways that they can attack on the offensive end. ... It would have been an incredible win for us."

Rondo finished with 19 points and 14 assists, but he won't be around for the rematch. The NBA assist leader has missed Boston's last two games with a sprained left ankle and might be out until early January.

The Celtics got Shaquille O'Neal back in the lineup Sunday against Indiana after a four-game absence, but Paul Pierce stole the show. The eight-time All-Star had 18 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in a 99-88 win - his first triple-double since March 8, 2006, against Philadelphia.

Pierce has 22 assists in the two games without Rondo as Boston has averaged 25.5 - just 0.4 fewer than what it produces when Rondo is in the lineup.

"We're putting (Pierce) in Rondo's spot, and making him the facilitator," coach Doc Rivers said. "With this team, especially with the injuries we have, he's been a great utility guy."

Boston might get another big man back Wednesday. Jermaine O'Neal has missed 18 consecutive games while recovering from left knee soreness, but is back practicing and says he's "50/50" to face Philadelphia.

The Sixers (11-17) won their last visit to Boston, 98-97 on Dec. 18, 2009, behind 23 points from Elton Brand, but their eight-game road trip took a disastrous turn Tuesday. Philadelphia let Chicago shoot 64.5 percent from the field at the United Center, falling behind by as many as 51 points in a 121-76 Bulls romp.

Collins, though, seemed remarkably composed after watching the Sixers' worst loss since they fell 124-74 at Houston on March 18, 2007.

"In the NBA you're going to have games like this, it just happens," said Collins, whose team had won eight of 11. "It'll be easier tomorrow. Our effort will be better tomorrow. We were just discombobulated on offense tonight. I didn't recognize us out there. I didn't even know what plays we were running."

The key to Philadelphia's success, however, seems to be on the defensive end. The 76ers are 9-0 when they hold their opponent under 41.5 percent from the field. They're 2-17 if a team shoots better than that mark, though they did nearly knock off the Celtics despite Boston's exceptionally good shooting.

Philadelphia could use some more production from Jrue Holiday if it's going to pull off the upset. Holiday has averaged 9.5 points and shot 31.1 percent in four career starts against the Celtics, and he's been awful lately - shooting 23.5 percent and scoring in single digits in the Sixers' last three games.

Celtics beat 76ers 84-80 for 14th straight win

BOSTON (AP) There's something about the Boston Celtics' 14-game winning streak that doesn't seem quite right to coach Doc Rivers.

Point guard Rajon Rondo, after getting off to the best start of his career, has missed six of the 14 wins. Backup Delonte West missed the last 12. Shaquille O'Neal sat out four. Jermaine O'Neal hasn't played since the winning streak began. And Kendrick Perkins, the starting center on last season's Eastern Conference champions, hasn't gotten on the floor all season.

"Usually, when you're on a winning streak, everybody's healthy, everybody's playing well and you're rolling," Rivers said Wednesday night after the Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 84-80 for their 14th win in a row. "You could make the case it's the opposite with us."

Ray Allen scored 22 points, and Paul Pierce recovered after missing his first seven shots to score 11 with four key baskets in the second half. Shaquille O'Neal had 13 points and nine rebounds, but he missed two free throws with 1:02 left and Boston nursing a two-point lead.

That gave Philadelphia two chances to tie it, but Andre Iguodala slipped and turned the ball over the first time and then had his shot blocked by Kevin Garnett the next.

Allen hit a pair of free throws with 5.6 seconds left to ice it.

"We've won games in the 100s; we've won games in the 80s. And we're just finding ways to grind it out cause we don't have the healthy bodies," said Pierce, who finished 4 for 15 from the floor. "You don't know who's going to be in there night-in and night-out."

Elton Brand had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Jrue Holiday scored 15 points for Philadelphia, which was coming off its worst loss in three years - a 45-point loss to the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night.

"I couldn't be more proud of them," Sixers coach Doug Collins said. "Last night was such an aberration. Our guys compete every night, and for them to come out and play the Celtics like they did, they showed who they are. That's who I know they are."

The Sixers led with 5 minutes left before Pierce stole the ball near midcourt and took it in for a dunk. It was 80-78 when Pierce hit a 19-footer, just his fourth basket of the game. Brand made a short jumper, then fouled out when he pulled O'Neal down to keep him from scoring an easy layup.

O'Neal missed both foul shots, but Iguodala slipped near the lane and Garnett came away with the ball. After Boston failed to score, Iguodala went to the basket but Garnett tipped the shot and Pierce came away with the rebound.

"We expected their best due to how they played (Tuesday) night, and how they got beat," Garnett said. "So we were prepared for a dogfight. We don't like 'em. But, hey, we'll suit up for them either way."

The Celtics have not lost since Nov. 21, the second game of their only two-game losing streak of the season. Their 14-game winning streak matches the fifth-longest in the history of the NBA's most-decorated franchise, and it ties the third-longest in 46 years.

The 2007-08 team, which won Boston's 17th NBA title, won a franchise-record 19 in a row.

Lou Williams scored 12 points and ex-Celtic Tony Battie had 10 for Philadelphia, which lost 121-76 to the Bulls on Tuesday night. That had Rivers sending angry text messages to his former assistant, Chicago's Tom Thibodeaux.

"You don't want to be the next one, but we are," Rivers said before the game.

Philadelphia led 44-38 at halftime, and Pierce hadn't scored; Garnett had just four points and a team-high three rebounds.

Brand made a pair of jumpers early in the third that helped Philadelphia hold onto an eight-point lead, but after falling behind 48-40 the Celtics scored 14 of the next 16 points. Pierce hit a jumper with 8:42 left in the third and then followed it with a 3-pointer from the left side that cut the deficit to one.

But he did not make another basket until he stole the ball from Jodie Meeks with 5:20 left in the game and went in for a slam dunk that cut a four-point deficit to two points, 72-70. He made another, a fallaway jumper from just outside the key, with 96 seconds left to give Boston an 82-78 lead.

NOTES: Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he expects Jermaine O'Neal to be ready for Saturday's Christmas Day game in Orlando. O'Neal has not played since Nov. 8 because of a sore left knee, and Rivers said he came down with the flu just when he was ready to return. ... Celtics point guard Nate Robinson left the game late in the first quarter to get his ankle re-taped, the team said. In the second half, he had ice on his right thigh. ... Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz helped the Celtics mascot, Lucky, with an acrobatic dunk before the third quarter. But the stunt had to wait so Ortiz could record it on his cellphone. ... The Celtics were called for two technical fouls in the third quarter, on Garnett and Pierce, for complaining about calls. ... Sixers guard Holiday had nine points in the first quarter but did not score again until the fourth.

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics came from behind to win their 14th straight game over the pesky Philadelphia 76ers 84-80. The C's pulled out the victory despite shooting a season-low 38.8 percent from the field. Ray Allen led all scorers with 22 points for Boston. Elton Brand had 16 points for the 76ers in the loss.

QUOTABLE: "We've won games in the 100's. We've won games in the 80's. That's the versatility of this team this year. We just are finding ways to grind it out. We don't who is going to be out there each night. No excuses, we just find a way."

THE STAT: The Celtics won the game despite only shooting 25 percent from the field in the fourth quarter (4-for-16). Boston made up for the subpar shooting with their aggressiveness, getting to the line 14 times in the closing 12 minutes.

TURNING POINT: Up two with just under a minute remaining, Kevin Garnett starred for Boston during two crucial defensive stops, thwarting Philly's Andre Iguodala on multiple drives to the baskets, enabling the Celtics to hold on for the win.

QUOTABLE II: "We showed a lot of character and a lot of heart. That's more what this team is like. It's disappointing we didn't close out this win tonight but we played strong, we played well"

HOT: Allen came out firing in the first quarter, hitting five of his first seven shots, which included a buzzer-beating jumper as time expired in the opening frame. He finished the quarter with 11 points overall.

NOT: Pierce could not find the bottom of the net for the better part of four quarters. Iguodala did well to limit his effectiveness on the offensive end. Thanks to that tough defense, Boston's small forward missed his first seven shots, and hit just 4-for-15 attempts on the evening.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Brand bounced back from a subpar outing last night in Chicago to post 16 points and 12 rebounds, his sixth double-double during the month of December.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Red Sox slugger David Ortiz watched the game alongside Patriots lineman Vince Wilfork from courtside.

ROOKIE WATCH: Avery Bradley looked comfortable for Boston off the bench at the guard spot. He had a nice steal and fast break layup in the second quarter. Semih Erden, who is still limited with shoulder and groin issues, grabbed five rebounds in 11 minutes of play.

NOTABLE: Nate Robinson left the Celtics bench area in the first quarter to have his right ankle re-taped. He returned to the game with 8:02 left in the second quarter. Boston shot a season-low 39.5 percent in the first half. The Celtics outscored Philadelphia in the paint 34-18. The 76ers finished with just 14 assists. Boston had just 10 turnovers, including only two in the second half. Philadelphia had a 15-0 edge in free throw attempts in the second quarter.
