There's likely to be an adjustment period in integrating four new players into the Orlando Magic's offensive system after Saturday's extreme makeover.

Stan Van Gundy can live with that - as long as his new acquisitions are ready to defend.

Unacceptable defense has been Van Gundy's chief concern during the Magic's six losses in seven games, a slump they'll hope to start working out of Monday night when they visit the Atlanta Hawks.

Orlando (16-10) was feeling good about itself during its 15-4 start, when it was allowing an NBA-low 91.1 points per game and looking like the class of the Eastern Conference along with Boston.

Two weeks later, it's not the best team in the Southeast Division. As Miami has surged into first place with its 12-game winning streak, the Magic have fallen into a rut.

Five losses in six games led general manager Otis Smith to make some drastic changes Saturday. Orlando sent Rashard Lewis to Washington for the high-scoring but troubled Gilbert Arenas in an exchange of bad contracts, then shipped Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat to Phoenix for Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu - who helped lead the Magic to the 2009 NBA finals.

Orlando also gave the Suns its 2011 first-round draft pick and cash and received forward Earl Clark.

"We needed a little bit more punch," Smith said. "All those guys coming in have an ability to move the ball. After looking at our team through 25 games, we were missing a little something. I thought change was needed."

The moves left Orlando severely short-handed for Saturday's visit from Philadelphia, but having only eight players wasn't an excuse Van Gundy was interested in using. The Magic gave up 57 second-half points in a 97-89 loss that left their coach fuming.

Orlando has given up an average of 52.6 second-half points in its past five games. Overall, it's allowing 97.6 during the 1-6 stretch.

"Make every excuse in the world," Van Gundy said. "That's five straight games where we've done nothing to defend in the second half. So whatever the excuses are. I'm running out of them. I don't believe in any of them. Go out and guard somebody."

Arenas, Richardson and Turkoglu aren't exactly known for their defensive abilities, but - despite Van Gundy's concerns at that end of the floor - Orlando needs a boost offensively as well. It's averaged 89.1 points in the last seven - 10.2 fewer than it was scoring during the 15-4 start.

A rough shooting night was the problem Dec. 6 against the Hawks (17-12). The Magic shot 37.8 percent in an 80-74 home loss, only their second defeat versus Atlanta in the last nine regular-season meetings.

The Hawks have to be happy they'll be at home. They've averaged 86.0 points while dropping their last four on the road, and scored only 52 points in the final three quarters of Sunday's 89-82 loss at New Jersey.

At home, Atlanta has won six straight by 10.3 points per game.

"We have to be able to take the good with the bad," guard Mike Bibby said. "We had a chance to put (the Nets) away early and didn't do it. We missed shots that our guys usually make."

Orlando has to hope Arenas starts making shots he typically knocks down. The three-time All-Star is shooting just 39.4 percent, but he's hoping a change of scenery - he refers to Smith as a "father figure" from their time together with Golden State - can help him turn around a career that seems to be spiraling downward.

"I'm just glad to be back in the playoff hunt," Arenas said. "I've been out of it for a while and just glad to be back in competitive basketball with a group of guys who now hope to win, so it's just great."

ATLANTA (AP) There were new names on some of Orlando's shirts, but Atlanta's Al Horford wasn't convinced he was looking at a different Magic team.

Horford said the Magic still were relying on Dwight Howard's inside power, and jump shots from the center's supporting cast. Unfortunately for the Magic, most of those jumpers were not falling against the Hawks.

Horford scored 24 points and the Hawks rolled to a 91-81 victory over Howard and the cold-shooting Magic on Monday night.

Orlando, which hasn't had time to practice since acquiring Gilbert Arenas, Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu on Saturday, struggled to find an offensive flow all night.

"They have the same kind of team," Horford said. "They're shooters. They're the same team but with different players."

After setting a season low with 14 points in the first quarter, the Magic were held without a field goal for the first 8 minutes of the final period. The Hawks led by 17 when Richardson finally ended the drought with Orlando's first basket with 4:04 remaining in the period.

Howard had 19 points and 20 rebounds, but too little help. Jameer Nelson scored 18 points but Arenas made only 2-of-11 shots for 10 points. Richardson had nine points and Turkoglu eight. Brandon Bass had 13.

"We're starting from scratch," said Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy. "We would have all liked it to have been better but it wasn't.

"Look, they're out there trying hard, just none of them played well. Nobody could shoot the ball. ... I'm sure they had a lot of emotions and stuff going on. It was a long night."

Orlando has lost seven of eight.

"Once we get going we'll be fine," Howard said. "It's been a terrible month for us. We'll pull out of it. Nobody's hanging their heads."

Atlanta also had a different look, a byproduct of coach Larry Drew's lineup experiments when top scorer Joe Johnson missed nine games following elbow surgery.

Drew tried a big lineup with center Jason Collins starting when Johnson was out, and Drew went back to the look to give the Hawks a bigger body against Howard. Collins started for forward Marvin Williams, allowing Horford to move from center to power forward.

"The big key was we were able to play bigger," Horford said. "Jason did a great job, and it freed me up some."

Johnson had 17 points, including 13 in the second half. Mike Bibby scored 15 points while hurting Orlando with three 3-pointers. Josh Smith had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Williams had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Horford grabbed 11 rebounds as Atlanta claimed a 51-38 advantage on the boards.

Arenas, playing as a reserve, sank a 3-pointer in the first period on his first shot with the Magic but couldn't build off the strong start.

"For being together a couple hours, we did all right," Arenas said.

Despite the loss, Arenas was still excited about his trade from Washington.

"Anywhere would have been a fresh start for me," Arenas said. "I lucked out coming here."

Richardson, Turkoglu and Earl Clark were acquired from Phoenix. The Magic lost Rashard Lewis, Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat, plus a 2011 first-round draft pick, in the two deals.

The Magic couldn't even practice before the game. Plans for a morning shootaround were scrapped because the new players had to take physicals. All passed.

Van Gundy said he had no time to put in plays for the newcomers.

"We didn't run much of anything," Van Gundy said. "I struggled rotation-wise and everything else. It was just very, very hard."

Richardson and Turkoglu started. Clark did not play.

The Magic shot only 25 percent from the field in the first quarter and finished at 35.2 percent for the game.

The Hawks led by 11 in the third period. Orlando rallied to pull even at 55-all on Howard's dunk, but the Magic couldn't take the lead. Atlanta closed the period with a 10-3 run to lead 65-58 entering the final period.

Notes: Orlando F Malik Allen limped off the floor an apparent leg injury with 44 seconds remaining in the third quarter. He was taken to the locker room and Van Gundy said he had no update after the game. ... Hawks G Jamal Crawford missed his fourth straight game with back spasms. ... Howard blocked two shots by Smith in the first period. ... The Hawks have won seven straight home games.

THE FACTS: Al Horford flourished in another move from center to power forward with 24 points, 11 rebounds and four assists to lead the host Hawks to a 91-81 win over the re-constituted Magic in Atlanta. Orlando struggled on the offense while losing for the third straight time, dropping their seventh game in the last eight. Orlando newcomers Jason Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu and Gilbert Arenas combined to make just 6 of 23 shots in their first games since joining Orlando in a pair of trades. With 19 points and 20 rebounds Dwight Howard had more than half the Magic's boards as Atlanta out-rebounded Orlando 51-38. Joe Johnson scored 17 for Atlanta, and Mike Bibby had 15.

QUOTABLE: "We clearly didn't do anything well. There's really nothing good you take away from it. We're starting from scratch. None of [the newcomers] played well; none of them could shoot the ball. It's not an easy thing coming to a new team. We got crushed on the glass, no question about that. I'm not jumping all over guys . . . it was just a major struggle. I thought guys were trying, we just didn't do anything well. I struggled rotation-wise. It was just very, very hard tonight."

THE STAT: Orlando got smaller through the two trades over the weekend, and it showed as the Magic grabbed just six offensive rebounds -- three over the final three quarters.

TURNING POINT: The Magic tied the game at 55 on a Howard dunk with 4:40 left in the third quarter, but Orlando missed its next 11 shots from the field over a span of 12:22 (scoring 15 points from the free throw line in that time). In the middle of that stretch, Atlanta took a 77-62 lead on a Marvin Williams dunk following Josh Smith's block of a Howard dunk attempt at the other end.

QUOTABLE II: "I wish we could get revved up for everybody else like we get revved up for Orlando and other good teams with good records." -- Smith, when asked about following Sunday afternoon's listless loss at New Jersey with Monday's win.

HOT: Smith made just 3 of 14 shots, but pitched his third straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also blocked three shots. . . . Magic forward Brandon Bass struggled to defend Horford, but with 13 points he has averaged 14.4 points over the past five games. He started Monday. . . . Bibby scored 13 points in the third quarter, making all three of his 3-point attempts. . . . In his first game coming off of Atlanta's bench this season, Williams scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, and grabbed six of his nine rebounds in that period. . . . Howard has consecutive 20-rebound games.

NOT: Turkoglu and Jason Richardson started in their first games with the Magic (in Turkoglu's second tour with the team), and struggled from the jump. Turkoglu did not score in the first half, nor grab a rebound, in 13-plus minutes. Richardson made 1 of 4 shots. . . . Arenas came off the bench and made just 2 of 11 shots in the game. . . . The Magic made 6 of 24 shots in the first quarter, falling behind 20-14, and made 5 of 15 in the third quarter and 5 of 14 in the fourth -- 16 of 53 in those three quarters.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones and actor Chris Tucker were at Monday's game.

GOOD MOVE: After struggling horribly the past season-plus against the Magic, who swept the Hawks out of the playoffs last season by a combined 101 points, Atlanta has beaten Orlando in two straight games with Jason Collins playing well at center against Howard (6 of 14 shooting, 7 of 12 from the free throw line, six turnovers). The move greatly benefits Horford as he moves to power forward.

QUOTABLE III: "We've found a certain way to play them, and sometimes it works and other times it doesn't work so well. We've gotten some really good play from our centers (Collins, Zaza Pachulia and even Etan Thomas) versus Dwight. That way, we can play Dwight straight up and not have to get into a lot of rotation, which gives us the ability to guard the 3-point line (where Orlando made 4 of 17 Monday)." -- Hawks coach Larry Drew on starting Collins at center, and moving Williams to a reserve role while sliding Horford to power forward and Josh Smith into Williams' small forward spot.

NOTABLE: Hawks reserve guard Jamal Crawford missed his fourth straight game with a sore back. He's considered questionable for Wednesday's game against the Cavs.
