Mavericks-Heat Preview

The star-laden Miami Heat appeared to be a team in turmoil following a loss to the Dallas Mavericks last month that dropped them to 9-8.

As they prepare to face the Mavericks for the first time since that game, those early season struggles are all but a distant memory for the Heat.

Miami will try to extend one of its longest win streaks in franchise history by snapping a 13-game skid to the Mavericks on Monday night.

Miami had dropped three of four when it arrived in Dallas on Nov. 27 and didn't threaten the Mavericks for most of the second half in a 106-95 defeat.

The game featured the infamous bump between LeBron James and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra during a third-quarter timeout. The two insisted there was nothing to speculation that the act was a sign of disrespect.

The Heat also had a players-only meeting to clear the air following the loss. Since then, the Heat have reeled off 12 consecutive victories, two shy of matching the longest in franchise history set Dec. 6, 2004-Jan. 1, 2005.

"I think everything is a lot smoother on both ends of the floor," Chris Bosh said. "We knew it was going to take time for us to come together. It's a lot quicker than I imagined, but we're continuing to work. We have a long way to go, so we want to continue to build on it."

Miami (21-8) kept that run going by rallying from a four-point deficit in the final 16 seconds for a 95-94 win at Washington on Saturday night. Dwyane Wade, Bosh and James Jones each hit a pair of free throws during the closing 6-1 run, and James scored 32 points for the second straight game.

"You see the Boston Celtics, Lakers and Spurs pull out games when they don't play well," Wade said. "We were able to do that."

The previous evening, the Mavericks (21-5) cruised to a 106-91 victory over Phoenix, their 14th in 15 games. Dallas used a balanced offense - four players in double figures - while containing one of the NBA's highest scoring teams.

The Mavericks are allowing 93.2 points per game this season and an average of 91.5 in their win streak over the Heat, tied for the second-longest current run for one team against one opponent. San Antonio has won 14 in a row over Minnesota.

"Our goal every night is to play the best defense we can," coach Rick Carlisle said.

Dallas has also won 19 of 21 overall against Miami and 14 of 15 since the Heat took Wade with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2003 draft. The Heat's All-Star guard, though, won his lone NBA championship at the expense of the Mavericks in 2006.

Dallas has claimed six straight games in Miami and nine of 10.

"It's gonna be a very challenging game for us," Carlisle told the team's website. "I'm sure they'll be thinking about revenge and all that stuff. ... It's a challenge we're looking forward to."

Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki is 37 points shy of passing Larry Bird for 25th on the NBA's career scoring list. He's averaged 26.4 points in his last 13 games against the Heat and 26.6 in his last 11 games in Miami.

The Heat's three stars are each averaging more than 20.0 points in their career against Dallas with James' 27.5 mark leading the way. However, they might need some more help in this game.

Wade, James and Bosh each had at least 22 points in the previous meeting with Dallas, but no other Miami player had more than nine. Dallas, meanwhile, had six players in double figures with former Heat forward Caron Butler scoring 23 and Nowitzki 22.

Mavs' end Heat 12-game streak, beat Miami 98-96

MIAMI (AP) The streak-busters of the NBA hail from Dallas.

And for whatever reason, unless there's a championship at stake, the Miami Heat simply cannot beat the Mavericks.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 26 points, Jason Terry had all of his 19 in the final 11 minutes, and the Mavericks held LeBron James scoreless in the first half on the way to ending Miami's 12-game winning streak with a 98-96 victory on Monday night.

It was Dallas' 14th straight regular-season win over the Heat, and the Mavericks had been the most recent team to beat Miami this season, too. Dallas has snapped six opponent winning streaks of at least five games this season - including a pair of 12-gamers, against San Antonio on Nov. 26 and now Miami's.

"I don't make a huge deal out of the streak," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "We are just trying to play solid basketball and win as many games as we can."

Terry has spoken often about how losing to Miami in the 2006 NBA finals still upsets him.

So while shooting at the East end of the court - the one over which the Heat championship banner softly sways - he put on a fourth-quarter show.

His biggest blow was a 3-pointer with 1:25 left, putting Dallas up 89-85 after Nowitzki airballed a 3-pointer but Miami couldn't get the rebound. Miami got within 91-90 on a three-point play by James, but that was the last gasp.

"Jet finally showed up in the fourth," Nowitzki said. "That's what he does. He's our finisher. He's our closer. He got hot."

Miami was within one point four times in the final 6:27, but Dallas never relinquished the lead.

"Couple of crazy bounces ... and they capitalized," Heat forward Chris Bosh said. "That's how the night went for us."

Caron Butler scored 13 for Dallas, which won despite giving up a 17-0 run in the first half and a 13-0 run in the third quarter.

Dwyane Wade scored 22 points, while James and Bosh each scored 19 for Miami. By the time Wade hit a meaningless 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining, James was already tugging at his jersey and heading off the floor.

"All year, we're going to continue to get better, to improve to get to the elite level," Wade said. "We're 30 games in. These elite teams, they've been playing together for a long time."

Mario Chalmers had 13 points and James Jones added 10 for Miami. Shawn Marion finished with 13 rebounds and Tyson Chandler grabbed 10 for Dallas.

Terry simply took over in the final 12 minutes, shooting 6 of 10 from the field. His teammates shot 3 of 10, Nowitzki going 0 of 5.

Somehow, it was enough.

"Bottom line is they made bigger plays down the stretch more consistently than we did," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

The first half had about as many story lines as it had minutes.

Dallas came out flying, running out to a 14-2 lead and looking every bit like the team that has dominated Miami since the start of the 2004-05 season, and the Mavericks' zone defense was giving the Heat fits.

"They can get you off-balance," James said. "Definitely."

Miami trailed 23-10 when James and Bosh checked out of the game for the first time. When they returned, Miami led 27-23.

It was 17 unanswered for the Heat, Wade leading the charge, personally accounting for the first 15 points - scoring nine of them, and setting up 3-pointers by Jones and Chalmers, the last of which put Miami ahead for the first time early in the second quarter.

James played 12 minutes in the first half, going to the bench with 6:01 left until intermission with three fouls. A late Miami spurt, fueled by Mike Miller's first appearance of the season, gave the Heat a 44-43 lead at halftime.

"Just shows the depth we have on this team," James said.

Miller checked in for the first time with 3:52 left in the half, the crowd greeting him with one of its loudest ovations of the season. Miller missed all four of his shots, all from beyond the 3-point arc, but grabbed three rebounds on what'll go down as a bizarre Heat possession.

Most NBA possessions last less than 24 seconds, with one or two shots. The Heat had one trip last 52 seconds - with eight shots.

Miller had a defensive rebound to start the possession, two more offensive rebounds to keep it alive, and after seven misses, Chalmers hit a 3 with 1:53 left for a 42-39 lead.

James got his first points with a 3-pointer early in the third - starting a 13-0 run that ended with the league's two-time reigning MVP making another 3 to give Miami a 61-55 lead. James struck again at the buzzer to end the third, his jumper over Jason Kidd putting the Heat up by three, then scored the first points of the final period for a 70-65 lead.

Moments later, Terry made his first shot of the night, and the game changed. He said Carlisle noted at the half that Dallas trailed by one, and that Terry was "still at the hotel."

In the end, Terry could appreciate the joke.

"I told him I thought the bus was at 8:45, 9:00," Terry said. "But thanks for coming back and getting me."

NOTES: Besides the 12-game winning streaks by San Antonio and Miami, Dallas has also stopped streaks by New Orleans (8), Utah (7), Boston (5) and Oklahoma City (5) this season. ... Terry's fourth-quarter total topped his output from 19 entire games this season. ... Dave Chappelle was in the sellout crowd, along with Heat regulars Dan Marino, Gloria Estefan and Jimmy Buffett. ... It was Wade's 500th regular-season game. ... Spoelstra remained one win behind Stan Van Gundy for third on the team's career list, 112-111.

THE FACTS: Dirk Nowitzki scored 26 points and Jason Terry added 19 off the bench to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 98-96 victory against the Miami Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena. The Mavs snapped the Heat's 12-game winning streak and swept the season series. Guard Dwyane Wade led the Heat with 22 points, but Miami shot just 40 percent from the field.

QUOTABLE: "We mixed up our zone and man-to-man nicely. Any time you hold a good offensive team to 40 percent shooting, it's a good thing. We just tried to clog the lane as much as we could. They settled for a lot of three against our zone. We got a little lucky."

THE STAT: The Mavs were 24 of 28 from the free throw line. Nowitzki and Terry combined to make 14 of 14.

TURNING POINT: The Heat used a 17-0 run to take control in the second quarter, but the Mavs withstood the flurry. They trailed by just one a halftime, remained close in the third before eventually pulling away late in the fourth.

QUOTABLE II: "Bottom line is they made bigger plays down the stretch and were more consistent and hit some big shots. "They executed and got all the necessary open shots and offensive rebounds to really pull away in a close game. It doesn't happen to us often that somebody scores 33 (fourth-quarter points) on us and did it in our building."

HOT: It wasn't necessarily one of Nowitzki's best shooting performances, but he made big shots when the Mavs needed it. He shot just 8 of 21 from the field.

NOT: LeBron James struggled in the first half for a second consecutive home game. He got it going in the third quarter, but never hit full stride. The low point for James, who made just 6 of 17 field goals, was when he missed back-to-back layups in the third quarter. He also had five turnovers.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: James did have 10 rebounds and seven assists to go along with 19 points. It was another solid all-around game, but the Heat need more from him in big games like this.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Gloria Estefan, FloRida, and Jimmy Buffet.

GOOD MOVE: Turning the game over to Jason Terry in the fourth quarter. He was having an poor shooting night until turning it on. He scored all 19 of his points in the last period.

BAD MOVE: The Heat simply settled for too many jumpshots. With slashers like Wade and James, attacking the basket should always be the first option. In the second half, the Heat became a jump-shooting team. It showed in the 31 3-pointers attempted.

NOTABLE: The Mavs now have snapped long winning streaks of seven team this season.
