Suns-Mavericks Preview

The Dallas Mavericks' defense has struggled over the last two games. Coach Rick Carlisle's team could get tested again if the high-scoring Phoenix Suns can repeat their most recent effort.

Dallas goes for its sixth straight home win over the Suns, who begin a potentially difficult three-game trip.

Since holding their opponents to 93.0 points and 43.4 percent shooting during a 12-game winning streak from Nov. 20-Dec. 11, the Mavericks (20-5) have allowed an average of 100.5 points on 48.5-percent shooting in the last two contests.

Dallas wasted a 20-point first-half lead in Monday's 103-99 loss to Milwaukee, and nearly let a 17-point third-quarter edge slip away Wednesday before holding on for a 103-98 victory over Portland.

"We circled the wagons and got it together," Carlisle said after his team held the Trail Blazers to a pair of field goals in the final 2:59 and improved to 4-1 on a season-high six-game homestand.

Meanwhile, Suns coach Alvin Gentry was pleased how his team pulled itself out of a season high-tying three-game slide with Wednesday's 128-122 victory over lowly Minnesota. Phoenix (12-12) hit 15 3-pointers and shot 50.6 percent from the field as seven players scored in double figures.

"Right now, it's the best thing that could have happened to us," said Gentry, whose team also travels to Oklahoma City and San Antonio on this trip. "We just needed a win."

The Suns also need to improve a defense yielding a league-worst 110.0 points per game.

Having center Robin Lopez back may help. With Lopez in the lineup Wednesday after missing 14 games with a sprained left knee, the Suns outrebounded the league's best rebounding team by seven.

While he was out, Phoenix was outrebounded by at least that amount seven times.

"I'm really excited to continue to play with Robin and he did a good job tonight," said Channing Frye, who grabbed a team-high nine boards and hit a career high-tying seven 3s. "He really helped out (with 12 points and eight rebounds). ... It's kind of easier to get up and pressure a little more when you got Big Fella back there."

Frye and Grant Hill might need that help trying to slow down Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler.

Nowitzki, averaging a team-high 25.0 points, has shot 63.1 percent from the field over the last seven games, while Butler is coming off a season high-tying 23-point effort against Portland. He scored nine straight for Dallas in the third quarter.

"He has no fear of big shots and big situations," Carlisle said.

In his second game after being acquired in a trade with Washington, Butler had 15 points during the Suns' last visit to Dallas, a 107-97 Mavericks win on Feb. 17. That victory sparked the Mavericks' season-best 13-game winning streak.

Steve Nash, who had a season-high 19 assists Wednesday, is averaging 17.8 points with 11.2 assists in the Suns' last five games in Dallas.

Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd, the only active player with more assists than Nash, had 18 points, 10 assists and a career-high seven steals in the Feb. 17 victory.

Suns leading scorer Jason Richardson averaged 20.3 points on 51.0 percent shooting as Phoenix dropped two of three to the Mavericks in 2009-10.

Nowitzki, Terry lead Mavericks past Suns 106-91

DALLAS (AP) Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks coasted to an easy win, taking advantage of an early injury to Phoenix star Steve Nash.

Nowitzki and Jason Terry scored 18 points apiece and the surging Mavericks rolled to a 106-91 victory Friday night over the Suns.

"The game changed without Nash," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's one of the best players ever. He was aggressive and was going to have a major impact on the game."

Caron Butler added 17 points, Shawn Marion had 15 and Tyson Chandler pulled down 12 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have won 14 of 15.

Nash missed the final three quarters with a neck injury. The All-Star point guard said he lost feeling in his extremities for a brief time after hitting the floor with 7:17 left in the first.

Nash and Chandler collided while going for a loose ball in the Phoenix backcourt. Nash fell on his neck and was down for several minutes before walking slowly to the bench.

After the game, Nash said he should be fine, pending the results of further tests. But the collision still gave Nash and his teammates cause for concern.

"I just bumped my head at a weird angle and had a spinal cord situation and lost feeling in my arms and legs," Nash said. "There was 10 seconds there where it was really scary, but it came back. They just felt like it wasn't worth risking it tonight. We'll see how it goes tomorrow, but I'm optimistic that the amount I've improved already, hopefully I'll improve enough to play Sunday or Monday."

Nash, who started the night averaging 18.1 points and 10.6 assists per game, finished with four points and one assist.

"Obviously, it changes everything that we do," Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry said. "We couldn't make shots, and I don't want to take anything away from (the Mavericks) because they're a good defensive team. They've proven that."

Phoenix started the night averaging a league-high 109 points per game. Dallas was holding opponents to 93.2 per game. Only five NBA teams were better defensively.

"Our goal every night is to play the best defense we can," Carlisle said. "But without Nash, the numbers are going to be skewed."

Hakim Warrick had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Goran Dragic added 14 points and 10 assists for the Suns, who have lost four of five.

Butler's seven points paced a 22-6 run from the end of the second quarter through the early part of the third as the Mavs expanded their advantage to 70-48 with 5:58 left in the third.

Dallas took an 80-59 lead into the fourth quarter, with Phoenix going 7 for 24 from the floor in the third.

The Mavericks wasted first-half leads of 17 or more points in their previous three games, winning twice.

Not this time. Dallas led by as many as 24 in the third and never let its advantage slip to fewer than 12 points in the final quarter.

"We've got to put teams away," Terry said. "We've let teams hang around. It's come back to bite us."

The Mavs built a 54-42 halftime lead behind Terry's 16 points and Marion's 15. Nowitzki committed three first-half fouls and had only four points at the break.

Nowitzki is 36 points short of matching Larry Bird's total of 21,791, which is 25th on the career list.

"Obviously, that's unbelievable to me, and I really don't know what to say," Nowitzki said. "If someone would have told me that 12 years ago when I came into the league, I would have said they were out of their minds."

Notes: Dallas completed a 5-1 homestand. ... The Mavs have won the last six at home against the Suns and seven of nine overall. ... The game was held up for about five minutes following a timeout in the second quarter when plastic debris from a holiday promotion littered midcourt. Several arena workers had problems sweeping up the clingy material. ... Phoenix C Robin Lopez had six points in his second game back since missing 14 with a sprained left knee. ... Suns F Channing Frye fouled out with 3:50 left, finishing with eight points and 14 rebounds. ... The Suns fouled Mavericks C Brendan Haywood intentionally three times in the fourth quarter. Haywood missed five of six free throws before he was replaced by C Ian Mahinmi. The Suns tried fouling Mahinmi, who made four straight from the line.

Suns-Mavericks notebook

THE FACTS: Sparked by super subs Jason Terry and Shawn Marion, the Mavericks defeated the short-handed Suns 106-91 on Friday in Dallas for their 14th win in 15 games. Phoenix never contended after losing point guard Steve Nash to a stinger early in the first quarter, with Dallas outscoring the Suns by a 58-34 margin during the second and third quarters. Terry (18 points) and Marion (15) were joined in double figures by Dirk Nowitzki (18) and Caron Butler (17).

QUOTABLE: "It was a very, very unfortunate thing so both teams hope [Nash] is OK soon. After that, it was a weird game. Both teams were concerned, but we still had a job to do."

THE STAT: Dallas muzzled Phoenix's primary perimeter guns, with the Suns shooting 23.8 percent (5-for-21) from behind the arc. Channing Frye, who buried seven 3-pointers in Wednesday's win against Minnesota, was 2-for-8 before fouling out with 3:50 to play. Jason Richardson, who came in leading the NBA with 62 treys, finished 0-for-5 from downtown.

TURNING POINT: With the Mavericks up 11-10, Nash collided with Dallas center Tyson Chandler at midcourt while contending for a loose ball. Both players went down as Chandler tipped the ball ahead for a dunk by Butler. Nash, whose head crashed into Chandler's hip, stayed down as a timeout was called at the 7:17 mark. After a few minutes, he walked gingerly to the locker room and did not return, diagnosed with a stinger. Nash said he temporarily lost feeling in his arms and legs. X-rays were negative, but there is no timetable for his return.

QUOTABLE II: "Everything seems to be fine. I'm sure we'll get some more tests done and everything. But it's a little scary -- you fall on the floor and you don't have feeling in your hands and your legs and that can scare the heck out of you. But he seemed to have those back, but not 100 percent, so we'll just see how it all works out."

HOT: Reserves Marion and Terry combined for 26 of the Mavericks' 32 points in the second quarter. Marion scored 13 (5-for-7 FG) and tallied two rebounds in the period and Terry scored 13 (6-for-7 FG) with four assists. Both played the full 12 minutes as Dallas flipped a 25-22 first-quarter deficit into a 54-42 halftime advantage.

NOT: Phoenix came in ranked first in the NBA in scoring with 109.0 points per game, but scored only 17 in both the second and third quarters. The Suns shot 39.3 percent for the game and posted their second-lowest point total of the season (89 at Orlando on Nov. 18).

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Dallas centers Chandler (12) and Brendan Haywood (10) both reached double figures in rebounds. ... Two Suns posted double-doubles off the bench. Goran Dragic racked up 14 points and 10 assists in Nash's absence and Hakim Warrick contributed a team-high 15 points and 14 boards, tied with Frye for the game high.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The Arkansas men's basketball team, in town for a doubleheader here Saturday, attended the game. The Razorbacks (7-1) face Texas A&M (9-1) and Baylor (9-0) battles Gonzaga (5-5) in "The Showcase."

NOTABLE: The Mavericks are 14-0 when scoring 100 points or more this season. ... Dallas is 7-1 when Marion and Terry both score in double figures off the bench. ...
