Timberwolves-Trail Blazers Preview

A return home should give the Portland Trail Blazers a good chance to snap a three-game slide. A visit from the Minnesota Timberwolves would seem to give them an even better shot to do so.

The Blazers attempt to win their season-high fourth straight at the Rose Garden and beat the Timberwolves for the 13th consecutive time Friday night.

Portland (12-14) opened its recently completed road trip with a 101-94 victory over Phoenix on Dec. 10, but didn't win again over the final three games. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 20 of his season-high 35 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday, but the Blazers fell 103-98 to Dallas.

"We've just got to take what we did to come back from 17 down and start games off like that, more confident with a better rhythm," Aldridge told the team's official website. "We came out kind of slow. We've got to start the game off better."

Portland should have a good opportunity for a better start against Minnesota, which is allowing an NBA-worst 56.4 points in the first half. The Timberwolves (6-20) are yielding 109.8 per game, second most in the league, and 113.1 over nine straight road losses.

The Blazers have outscored the Wolves 102.5-88.8 during their 12-game run in the series.

During one of its best offensive performances of the season Wednesday, Minnesota held a fourth-quarter lead at Phoenix but couldn't recover after giving up 11 straight points in a 128-122 defeat.

"It's happened to us a lot this year," big man Darko Milicic said. "We just can't finish up the games. We had a game we could win, but we just couldn't do it."

Kevin Love had 23 points and 16 rebounds for his career-best 12th consecutive double-double, but couldn't help the Timberwolves avoid their third straight loss - all during a season-high six-game trip.

"We just made a bunch of mistakes in our defensive coverage," coach Kurt Rambis said. "Whether it was pick-and-rolls or transition, from the very start of the game guys weren't putting their heads down and running back."

Blazers guard Brandon Roy will look to take advantage of the defensively challenged Wolves as he tries to end his offensive struggles. He has averaged 6.7 points and 24.3 percent shooting over the last three games.

Roy, though, has averaged 10.3 points in his last four meetings with Minnesota - far below his career scoring average of 19.9. He scored seven points in the teams' most recent matchup, a 110-91 road victory Feb. 27.

Love has struggled against Portland, averaging 5.6 points and 5.4 rebounds in five games. However, the NBA's leading rebounder at 15.6 a contest missed three of the four matchups last season.

Minnesota, 1-26 in its last 27 on the road, has dropped nine straight in Portland.

Aldridge ties career high with 36 in Blazers win

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Down to nine players during the second half, Portland turned to LaMarcus Aldridge and Rudy Fernandez.

Aldridge tied a career high with 36 points and Fernandez added a career-high 26 to help the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 107-102 Friday night.

"That's when they need from me right now," Aldridge said.

Aldridge went 15 of 22 from the field, scored six baskets on dunks off lob passes, and had 10 rebounds to help the Trail Blazers win their 13th consecutive game over Minnesota. The Timberwolves haven't beaten Portland since March 25, 2007.

Aldridge had a chance to set his career high late in the game, but missed two free throws after finding out he was on the verge.

"Some fan yelled it to me, and when they yelled it to me, I got tight and missed both of them," Aldridge said. "Next time, don't tell me."

Fernandez made four 3-pointers and had a season-high six assists. Wesley Matthews scored 21 points for Portland, which ended a three-game losing streak.

"It was important for me to be aggressive and go to the basket and not just focus on my shots," Fernandez said.

Michael Beasley scored 33 points to lead Minnesota, which lost its fourth consecutive game. Kevin Love had 19 points and 17 rebounds for the Timberwolves (6-21). Martell also scored 19 points.

Minnesota outrebounded Portland 49-37. Aside from Love, Kosta Koufos grabbed 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

Aldridge scored Portland's first 12 points of the game, and had 20 by halftime to stake Portland to a 61-54 lead. The Blazers couldn't shake pesky Minnesota during the second half, though. A four-point play by Fernandez and a dunk by Aldridge gave Portland a 94-84 lead, but Minnesota rallied to within four points when Beasley hit three free throws with 1:31 remaining.

The Blazers put the game away with 27 seconds remaining when Matthews hit a running 6-footer to give Portland a 105-99 lead.

Portland guard Brandon Roy sat out Friday's game with knee pain. The Trail Blazers announced earlier in the day that they planned to rest Roy until at least the Dec. 25 game at Golden State.

Friday's game took a toll on both teams. Minnesota's Darko Milicic hurt his ankle on the opening tip, and didn't return. Portland's Marcus Camby and Nicolas Batum suffered right shoulder injuries during the first half, and didn't return from the locker room after halftime.

Portland was down to eight players for the final three minutes of the third quarter when Matthews briefly went to the locker room with a leg injury.

Notes: Webster returned to Portland for the first time since the Blazers traded him to Minnesota last June for draft picks. Webster missed the first 24 games of the 2010-11 season recovering from back surgery. ... The Blazers shot 64 percent during the first half (27 of 42). ... Minnesota is 1-15 on the road this season.

THE FACTS: With Brandon Roy out for the game and Marcus Camby and Nicolas Batum missing due to injury for the second half, the Trail Blazers had enough to pull out a 107-102 victory over Minnesota Friday night at the Rose Garden. HOT: Aldridge scored Portland's first 12 points and made 15 of 22 shots from the field.

NOT: Dante Cunningham got some open looks around the basket but finished only 1-for-6 shooting.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Fernandez had the best all-around game of his three-year career, scoring a career-high 26 points, dishing out a season-high six assists to go with three rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes off the bench.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Watching courtside was Nike executive Tom Clarke, father-in-law of ex-Blazer Martell Webster, who had 19 points and nine rebounds for Minnesota.

GOOD MOVE: McMillan stayed with backup point guard Patty Mills instead of starter Andre Miller down the stretch. Mills rewarded the coach with eight points, four assists and some good defense on Minnesota's Luke Ridnour.

BAD MOVE: Minnesota center Darko Milicic lost the opening tip -- and came down on Camby's foot. He left with a sprained ankle at the first clock stoppage, never to return.

ROOKIE WATCH: Armon Johnson played only three minutes but sank a key 3-pointer in the second quarter.

NOTABLE: Six of Aldridge's 15 baskets came on dunks off of lob passes -- three from Fernandez, two from Wesley Matthews, one from Camby.
