Paul Pierce helped the Boston Celtics survive a close to call to extend their season-high winning streak. Now, they'll look to keep it going against the same team they beat to start their run.

Boston can win its 12th straight game for the first time since Jan. 11-Feb. 3, 2009, when it hosts the Atlanta Hawks.

This is the fifth winning streak of 10 or more games for the Celtics (20-4) since Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen joined Paul Pierce on the team for the start of 2007-08. Last season, Boston won 11 straight at nearly the exact same time - Nov. 22-Dec. 14 - before falling short of a 12th consecutive victory.

The current streak reached 11 on Wednesday - barely. Pierce's jumper with 0.4 seconds remaining capped a come-from-behind 118-116 victory over New York. The Knicks' Amare Stoudemire then made a 3-point attempt, but it was ruled to have come after the buzzer.

"When I seen that shot, it was like (Pierce) went to a natural shooting rhythm and just seemed like he took a little bit more time," Allen said. "And that goes back to our possession when (Pierce) hit the shot, taking as much time off the clock that we could, because imagine if they had .8 on the clock or .9 on the clock, that would have been a different story."

Pierce finished with a season-high 32 points to lead Boston, which also got 20 points and 13 rebounds from Kevin Garnett and 26 points from Allen to become the first Eastern Conference team to 20 wins.

The Celtics will also become the first to 21 if they repeat their performance against the Hawks (16-10) from Nov. 22 in Atlanta. Despite the absence of point guard Rajon Rondo, Boston dominated Atlanta 99-76 to snap a four-game losing streak in the series, limiting the Hawks starters to a combined 27 points.

"This was very embarrassing," Atlanta coach Larry Drew said after that game. "Very, very embarrassing. Very embarrassing. If I had one word to sum it up: embarrassing."

Drew may have felt similarly Tuesday when the Hawks turned a three-point deficit entering the fourth quarter into a 103-80 blowout loss to Detroit. The Hawks are 10-10 since starting the season 6-0. Each of their last three losses have come by at least 12 points.

Josh Smith, who is averaging 24.0 points over his last four games, scored a game-high 26. Al Horford added 17 and 12 rebounds.

Smith, Horford, Marvin Williams and the since-injured Joe Johnson combined to shoot 6 for 29 in the November loss to Boston.

The Hawks also won't have top reserve Jamal Crawford for this game due to a sore back. The guard is averaging 14.8 points.

The Celtics are 3-2 in the second game of back-to-backs, though they may be without centers Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal, who both sat out Wednesday due to injury.

Garnett leads Celtics to 12th straight win

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Celtics have had one important constant during the recent rash of injuries - the Big Three are still healthy.

Kevin Garnett had 17 points and 14 rebounds - one of three Boston players with a double-double - to lead the Celtics to their 12th straight win, 102-90 over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night.

Paul Pierce had 15 points and 10 assists and Glen "Big Baby" Davis had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Ray Allen scored 18 points and Nate Robinson had 14 for the Celtics (21-4).

"We feel we should win the game. On most nights we're playing three or four all-stars," said Pierce, who played as a "point-forward" for much of the second half, handling the ball a lot and setting up Allen for open looks with solid passes.

Boston point guard Rajon Rondo missed the game after spraining his left ankle in Wednesday's win at New York. He's expected to be sidelined at least a week. Center Shaquille O'Neal was also out, missing his fourth straight game with a sore right calf.

The Celtics were already without Delonte West and Jermaine O'Neal.

It didn't matter because Pierce, Allen, and Garnett got just enough help from the role players.

The Celtics beat an Atlanta team that was called more athletic while defeating Boston in all four meetings last season.

"Kevin's healthy," Boston coach Doc Rivers said was the difference in the games from last season. "You can stop there, and Paul's healthy. The funny thing is it's the younger guys getting injured."

Garnett said the Celtics won't let the injuries bother them.

"What are you going to do?" he said. "Quit. Put your clothes on and go home? That's not what we do here."

Marvin Williams had a season-best 26 points and Jeff Teague scored 18 for the Hawks.

"They still had three Hall of Famers out there," said Hawks forward Josh Smith, who scored just one point on 0-for-8 shooting. "I'm not making excuses, but we still had two of our main scorers out also."

The Hawks shot 50 percent for the game, but were hurt by 18 turnovers.

Boston led by six points entering the final quarter, but the Hawks closed within 77-75 on Teague's one-handed runner in the lane.

The Celtics then scored seven straight points, with Davis and Semih Erden sandwiching baskets around a 3-pointer by Pierce, making it 84-77 with just under eight minutes to play.

Atlanta sliced it to 84-78 on Damien Wilkins' free throw, but Pierce hit two free throws and Robinson nailed a 3, helping Boston pull safely in front. Allen's 3-pointer made it 100-86 with 1:53 left.

The Celtics - behind Allen's 10 points - took a 73-63 lead late in the third quarter. Coming off screens and getting wide-open looks, Allen hit his first three shots of the quarter. But the Hawks stayed close because of some good outside shooting of their own, hitting 65 percent from the field (11 of 17).

"They know how to win and it's where we need to get to," Atlanta forward Al Horford said. "Give credit to Ray. In the second half, he hit some big shots to get them going."

Boston led 75-69 entering the final quarter.

NOTES: Hawks G Jamal Crawford was sidelined with a sore back. ... Rivers talked about the team's need to get players back before the game. "If a guy can play, we're throwing him in," he said. Then the Celtics lost guard Von Wafer, who missed the second half with a sore back. It gave them three guards (Rondo and West, broken wrist) out to go along with three big men (Kendrick Perkins, Shaq and Jermaine O'Neal). ... Atlanta's Horford and Mike Bibby each were whistled for technicals. ... Smith had only two points (no field goals) in Boston's 99-76 road win on Nov. 22. ... THE FACTS: Three Celtics players had double-doubles, leading a balanced effort on a shorthanded night as Boston cruised to its 12th straight win after beating the Atlanta Hawks 102-90. Celtics captain Paul Pierce stepped up his distribution efforts for the C's, who played without injured point guard Rajon Rondo, dishing out 10 assists to go along with his 15 points. Down low, Kevin Garnett and Glen Davis both chipped in with double-doubles of their own, helping Boston come from behind for the win. Marvin Williams led all players with 26 points for the Hawks in the defeat.

QUOTABLE: "We are just out here grinding. There's nothing else to say. Every player is giving everything they have. In order for us to win these games, we just have to give everything we have until we get guys back."

THE STAT: Hawks power forward Josh Smith has missed all 11 field goal attempts during his 56 minutes of action this year against Boston over two games. Smith has three points overall during those contests, and he finished with just one tonight.

TURNING POINT: The Celtics went on a 7-0 run at the 10-minute mark in the fourth quarter to push their lead to a comfortable nine points. Atlanta never recovered from the hot streak, trailing by at least six points the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "I knew I was going to have to be more of a playmaker. I tried to feel the game out and give it what it need. I didn't feel the need to have a big scoring night based on what the other guys were doing. Guys are going to be asked to play multiple roles with the injuries and that's what we have to do."

HOT: Without Rondo in the lineup, Hawks backup point guard Jeff Teague took advantage Boston's defensive dropoff by breaking out for 11 points in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting in just 10 minutes of action. The second-year guard finished with a season-high 18 points in the loss.

NOT: Atlanta's starters in the second quarter struggled mightily on the offensive end, scoring just one of the team's 22 points over the entire 12 minutes. They finished with just 47 of the team's 90 points on the night.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Garnett continues to be a rebounding machine, tallying his eighth double-double during the team's 12-game winning streak. The Big Ticket is now averaging a double-double on the season, with 15.7 points to go along with 10 boards per game.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Patriots players Alge Crumpler and Julian Edelman sat courtside along with Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis to watch the Celtics victory.

GOOD MOVE: Atlanta head coach Larry Drew decided to go with an oversized starting lineup to take advantage of the Celtics' injury woes. Williams played shooting guard instead of his usual small forward position, and took advantage of the mismatch by exploding for a season-high 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting.

ROOKIE WATCH: With a laundry list of injuries limiting options for both coaches, all four rookies got action tonight for both teams. Semih Erden did the most damage, playing effectively in his fourth straight start at center in place of Shaquille O'Neal with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including two impressive jams inside. Luke Harangody and Avery Bradley also saw some of their first meaningful action of the year with some spot duty in the second quarter. For Atlanta, Jordan Crawford struggled, turning the ball over three times in eight minutes of floor time.

NOTABLE: Ray Allen and Davis led Boston in scoring with 18 points apiece, with 12 of Allen's points coming in the third quarter. Davis drew his 30th offensive foul on the year. He leads the NBA in that category. Celtics guard Von Wafer left the game in the second quarter with a sore lower back and did not return. His injury left the Celtics with just nine active players in the second half, including three rookies. Atlanta shot over twice as many free throws as Boston, by a margin of 24-11. The Celtics outscored Boston in the paint 50-36. Atlanta guard Jamal Crawford missed the game with a sore back. O'Neal is expected to return in Boston's next game Sunday vs. Indiana. Rondo is expected to miss at least a week with his sprained left ankle.
