New Orleans Hornets coach Monty Williams didn't get too excited last month when his team extended the franchise's best start with a victory over the Sacramento Kings.

The first-year coach definitely isn't pleased with how his team is playing now.

New Orleans looks to snap a season-worst three-game losing streak Wednesday night when it hosts a slumping Kings team that could be without Tyreke Evans again.

Needing a victory to tie San Antonio for the league's best record at 11-1, New Orleans (14-10) won 75-71 at Sacramento on Nov. 21 despite missing 14 of its first 17 shots and finishing at 32.2 percent from the field. It was the Hornets' worst shooting effort in a victory since they made 22 of 72 in a 76-73 win at Houston on April 1, 2005.

"I don't think either one of us is going to send this tape to Springfield (the Basketball Hall of Fame) or any other field," Williams said after that game. "At this point in the season I don't even look at the standings. I had no idea we would have this kind of record. Looking at our record, it might be fools' gold."

With Williams' team dropping nine of 12 since that victory, the Hornets' record-setting start is seeming more like an anomaly.

New Orleans, which has fallen from first to seventh in the Western Conference since last month's victory in Sacramento, dropped its third straight for the first time this season Monday, losing 96-84 at Miami.

"We need to get a win so we could see how it feels," said All-Star point guard Chris Paul, who is averaging 5.0 assists - half his career average - during the losing streak.

The Hornets' schedule, though, could help the club experience winning more often. Including Wednesday's matchup, four of New Orleans' next seven games are against teams at least 10 games below .500.

The Kings fell to 5-17 on Tuesday with their 16th loss in 18 games, 118-105 at Houston.

Playing without its scoring and assists leader in Evans, who is questionable Wednesday with mild plantar fasciitis in his left foot, Sacramento was outscored 31-18 in the second quarter en route to the team's sixth straight road loss.

"Things start snowballing a little bit, and we can't seem to stop the avalanche," coach Paul Westphal said. "Whether it's a couple of calls we think should go our way, a couple turnovers, a couple of made 3s, hustle plays where we deflect the ball and it goes to the other team, it just seems like even though we were playing well, next thing you know, we're down 10."

Sacramento will try to avoid its first seven-game skid on the road since an 0-11 stretch from Jan. 1-Feb. 7, as it makes its first trip to New Orleans Arena since a 96-94 loss on Dec. 8, 2009.

David West had 24 points and 12 rebounds, Emeka Okafor added 17 points and 12 boards and Paul scored 15 with 12 assists in that matchup as the Hornets posted their ninth victory in 10 home meetings with the Kings.

Paul has won the last six times he's faced Sacramento, and is averaging 21.8 points and 11.2 assists during that stretch.

Hornets complete record comeback, beat Kings 94-91

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Marcus Thornton surged up through a crowd underneath, tipped home a missed shot and then stood under the basket, letting out a triumphant roar with his arms clenched at his side.

The crowd went wild with him as the Hornets closed in on the greatest comeback in franchise history. For the popular former LSU star who'd been relegated to the bench more often than not lately, it was a moment to savor.

"Just happy, man. Just happy to be out there on the court with those guys again, playing as a team and contributing," Thornton said. "I credit my teammates for that. They never let me put my head down when I was going through stuff or whatever. Coaches never let me put my head down, told me to keep it up and be ready when your name's called."

Thornton scored 17 of his season-high 19 points in the second half, including 13 during a crucial 6-minute span in the third quarter, and the Hornets overcame a 23-point second-half deficit for a 94-91 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night.

Chris Paul led the Hornets with 22 points and 11 assists, and afterward praised Thornton for staying focused and prepared even though he hadn't played in three of the past five games.

"That happens in this league. He knows that. But I think that showed a lot about him and his resolve," Paul said. "He didn't give up. He knows we're going to need him and the next game might not call for 25 minutes from him, but we need that same energy and that was great for him. When you're called on, you've got to be ready to play and he was."

David West added 11 points and Emeka Okafor and Willie Green each scored 10 for New Orleans, which won for only the fourth time in 13 games.

Tyreke Evans scored 22 points and Beno Udrih 20 for the Kings, who led 66-43 on Donte Greene's 3-pointer with 8:48 to go in the third quarter.

DeMarcus Cousins and Carl Landry each scored 13 for Sacramento, which has lost 11 of 12.

Thornton checked in and almost single-handedly turned things around right after Greene's third 3 had the game looking like a blowout in Sacramento's favor. Thornton hit a pair of 3s and two driving layups during a 20-4 run that got the Hornets and the crowd back into the game at 72-65.

Right about then, Kings coach Paul Westphal could sense the game slipping away.

"You could feel it happening. We just couldn't reverse it," Westphal said. "The defensive intensity we had earlier wasn't there. Excessive fouling put us in the penalty early. We didn't move the ball effectively. When we did get stops, we didn't do a good job of keeping them off the boards. They got second shots. We didn't have anybody make a big play for us.

"Maybe it's fatigue, maybe it's inexperience, maybe it's breaks in the game," the coach added. "I tend to think it's a little bit of all of them."

Paul's pull-up jumper in the lane as he was fouled and Green's jumper helped New Orleans pull to 77-74 early in the fourth quarter, and the Hornets finally tied it with a 6-0 spurt capped by Marco Belinelli's free throws with 5:01 to go.

Omri Casspi's 3 and Cousins' tip-in helped Sacramento pull back in front 88-85 with 3:36 to go, then New Orleans responded with the next six points, highlighted by Thronton's off-balance, fast-break layin and Paul's driving layup to make it 91-88.

The Kings failed to score on two straight possessions - Cousins' miss and traveling violation - and then Thornton punctuated his memorable night with a tip-in to make it 93-88.

"He gave us a spark. The opportunity was there and he showed up," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "He's still a work in progress on defense, but his offense can cover up a lot of mistakes."

Sacramento dominated early, led by Evans' strong return from a one-game absence because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

The Kings outshot the Hornets 58 percent (26 of 45) to 31.7 percent (13 of 41) in the first half, closing the second quarter with Evans' short fall-away and Landry's dunk to make it 57-41 at halftime.

Evans only wished the Kings could have kept it up.

"From the looks of it, we're not all on the same page," Evans said. "We have too much going on. We're out there in the second half, we lose focus. Everybody forgets about the plays. We showed the type of basketball we can play (at times). We just have to play together."

Notes: The Hornets are 10-3 at home. ... This marked the second meeting of the season, with New Orleans winning the first in Sacramento 75-71 on Nov. 21. ... Announced attendance was 13,325, including $30,000 in tickets purchased by an association of local businesses trying to build support for the team.

THE FACTS: Chris Paul paced a furious comeback with 22 points and 11 assists as the New Orleans Hornets defeated the Sacramento Kings 94-91 on Wednesday night in the New Orleans Arena. The Hornets set a franchise record their 23-point comeback leading to the win was the largest deficit overcame in team history.

THE STAT: The Hornets outscored the Kings 49-23 after Sacramento held a 68-45 with 7:58 remaining in the third quarter.

TURNING POINT: Hornets guard Marcus Thornton, who was previously buried on the coach Monty Williams' bench, hit a falling 5-foot jumper with 3:04 remaining in the game to give the Hornets their first lead since they lead 14-13 in the first quarter. New Orleans never trailed again.

QUOTABLE: "You saw at the end of that I started screaming. It felt good. It felt good to come back. After the game, I found out it was the largest comeback in franchise history. So, it was good. It felt good."
--Thornton on his tip in with 17.3 seconds left in the game to seal the improbable win.

HOT: Kings guard Tyreke Evans was a game-time decision after missing Tuesday night's game with plantar faciitis in his left foot. But it didn't seem to affect Evans as he scored 22 points on 9-for-18 shooting in nearly 43 minutes. So much for the injury.

NOT: Hornets starting forward Trevor Ariza played less than 20 minutes scoring no points while only taking three shots. Williams said sometimes that's the way things fall in a game.

GOOD MOVE: Williams' decision to finally play Thornton more minutes. Thornton hasn't played enough consistent defense to crack Williams' rotation, but the Hornets have desperately lacked scoring threats outside of Paul and David West. Thornton went 8-for-15 from the floor scoring 19 points off the bench in nearly 24 minutes and was the scoring spark plug the Hornets (15-10) needed.

ROOKIE WATCH: Kings center DeMarcus Cousins scored 13 points, but he also drew a traveling call with 40.0 seconds left with the Kings (5-18) down 91-88 for a costly turnover.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Actor Matthew McConaughey attended Wednesday night's game and was caught on the big screen.
