Trail Blazers-Mavericks Preview

Unable to protect another seemingly safe lead, the Dallas Mavericks had their longest winning streak of the season come to an abrupt end their last time out.

While the Mavericks know they have to play tighter defense down the stretch to prevent big rallies, the Portland Trail Blazers are hardly looking like a team that could mount such a comeback.

Dallas tries to bounce back from its first loss in 3 1/2 weeks Wednesday night in its first meeting of the season with the Trail Blazers, who are coming off a second straight sluggish offensive performance.

After wasting a 25-point lead against Utah on Saturday before rallying for its 12th straight victory, Dallas (19-5) squandered a 20-point second-quarter advantage and lost 103-99 to Milwaukee on Sunday.

The Mavericks had a chance to tie the score late but Dirk Nowitzki missed from 7 feet with 10.6 seconds to go. Nowitzki finished with 30 points for Dallas, which lost for the first time since Nov. 19.

"This kind of slippage we've seen all too often," coach Rick Carlisle said. "I've got to coach harder, the players have got to be more conscientious, we've got to do better than we did (Monday)."

Dallas, known for playing sound defense under Carlisle, surrendered 60 points in the second half - its highest total allowed in a half this season.

"This was a game we should have won, a game we clearly had under control," forward Tyson Chandler said. "We let them back in it."

Dallas, which allowed more than 100 points for just the sixth time this season, doesn't seem likely to have as much trouble defensively against a Trail Blazers team that has managed 69 second-half points in its last two games combined.

After scoring a then-season-low 78 points in a loss to San Antonio on Sunday, Portland (12-13) hit a new low in Monday's 86-73 defeat at Memphis, its eighth in 12 games.

The Blazers had a three-point lead after three periods, but missed 15 of 19 shots and scored nine fourth-quarter points in their lowest-scoring quarter of the season. They shot 36.7 percent from the floor overall, the seventh time in 12 games they were below the 40.0 mark.

"We had a bad fourth quarter," said guard Andre Miller, who finished with 14 points and nine assists. "The most important quarter, and it killed us. That was the game right there."

The Blazers were also hurt by an ineffective Brandon Roy, who was playing on a bum left knee he tweaked Sunday.

Roy, who entered as Portland's leading scorer at 17.7 points, finished with seven on 3-of-16 shooting. The three-time All-Star has shot 31.9 percent from the floor in his last six games.

The Blazers, wrapping up a four-game trip, have lost nine of their last 11 away from Portland. However, they took both meetings in Dallas last season after dropping their previous 11 there.

Butler, Nowitzki lead Mavericks past Trail Blazers

DALLAS (AP) Dirk Nowitzki was having a sub-par game. Then the fourth quarter started.

Nowitzki scored 12 of his 21 points in the final quarter, Caron Butler matched his season high with 23 points and the Dallas Mavericks got back on track with a 103-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

Jason Terry added 13 points for the Mavericks, whose 12-game winning streak was snapped by the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night.

Dallas-area native LaMarcus Aldridge scored 20 of his season-high 35 points in the fourth quarter and Wesley Matthews added 17 for the Blazers, who lost their third in a row.

Portland rallied from a 17-point third-quarter deficit, tying it at 93 with 2:07 left on Aldridge's reverse layup. But Nowitzki hit a 6-footer with 1:49 remaining to give Dallas the lead for good.

Nowitzki had six points during an 8-2 run capped by his 19-footer with 29.9 seconds left for a 101-95 lead. He accounted for 12 of Dallas' final 19 points, starting with a layup and a pair of free throws.

"I hit two free throws, that definitely helped me get going," Nowitzki said. "Then I was able to knock some good shots down, so just finding a way sometimes is all a shooter needs - a layup and two free throws to get going."

Terry converted two free throws with 12.7 seconds remaining for the final margin.

The Mavericks wasted 25- and 20-point leads in their previous two games, rallying to beat Utah before losing to a Milwaukee team that was last in the NBA in scoring but put up 60 second-half points against Dallas.

This time, Dallas was up 63-46 in the third quarter on Jason Kidd's 3-pointer.

But the Blazers later had an 11-0 run and eventually trimmed the Mavericks' lead to 78-68 by the start of the fourth.

Butler carried the offensive load with nine straight points for his team during one third-quarter stretch and scored a total of 11 in the quarter. Meanwhile, Matthews had 13 third-quarter points for Portland.

"Butler plays an aggressive game," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "He has no fear of big shots and big situations."

Carlisle wasn't happy with his team's second-half defensive effort against the Bucks, and it was a particular point of emphasis heading into Wednesday night's game.

Portland, whose field goal percentage of .430 was third-lowest in the league at the start of the night, went 42 for 85 from the field (49.4 percent).

But the Mavs hunkered down on defense over the final 1:34 as the Blazers turned the ball over twice and missed three of five shots.

"We circled the wagons and got it together," Carlisle said.

The Trail Blazers started the night tied for second in the league in offensive rebounds, and they had six in the first quarter and 12 for the game.

Dallas carried a 17-14 lead into the second quarter despite six turnovers in the opening 12 minutes.

The game was tied at 32 before the Mavs ended the second with a 19-7 spurt in a 5:46 span for a 51-39 edge at the break. Kidd hit a pair of 3-pointers during the second-quarter run.

Aldridge made the game tight down the stretch, hitting eight of 10 shots and pulling down six rebounds in the final quarter.

"When we win it's special," Aldridge said of returning to his hometown. "Losing is never special. We had a chance there at the end. Dirk made two really tough shots - that's what he does."

Notes: Portland C Joel Przybilla was assessed a technical in the second quarter when he fouled J.J. Barea on a drive, hitting Barea in the head. Barea wasn't injured on the play. ... Dallas has won 20 of the last 25 meetings between the teams. ... Portland won twice in Dallas last season, with Andre Miller scoring a career-high 52 points on Jan. 30. Miller had nine points Wednesday night. ... Portland's 14 first-quarter points were the low for an opening quarter by the Blazers, and by a Mavs opponent this season.

THE FACTS: Caron Butler scored 23 points and Dirk Nowitzki scored 21, including eight of the Mavericks' final 12 as they survived a LaMarcus Aldridge-fueled, fourth-quarter charge by the Trail Blazers for a 103-98 victory on Wednesday in Dallas. Aldridge scored 20 of his season-high 35 points in the final period as Portland erased a 17-point, third-quarter deficit before dropping its third straight game. Four other Mavericks scored in double figures.

QUOTABLE: "We need that from [Aldridge]. I thought early he passed up some opportunities to go, and he got aggressive. Really, we played through him pretty much the entire second half. That type of fight, physical play and establishing the post position is what we need from him nightly."

THE STAT: For the third straight game, Dallas frittered away a sizable lead. The Mavericks were up by 24 on Saturday against the Jazz and held on for a 103-97 win, their 12th straight. On Monday, they led by 20 before losing to the Bucks 103-99. On Wednesday, Dallas had Portland down by 17 in the third quarter, only to find themselves in a tie game in the last three minutes.

TURNING POINT: Portland entered the game ranked second in the league in offensive rebounding (13.4 per game) and was well on its way to reaching that total with nine in the first half. Dallas shut the Blazers down in the second half, limiting them to zero offensive boards in the third quarter and none in the fourth until Aldridge's putback slam with 50.3 seconds remaining.

QUOTABLE II: "The fourth quarter is all about making plays and Dirk made big plays tonight. He made big shots down the stretch, and one of those shots was with LaMarcus really all over him."

HOT: Butler scored 11 of his season high-tying 23 points in the third quarter and Portland's Wesley Matthews went toe-to-toe with him, scoring 13 of his 17 in the third. That was just a prelude for Aldridge's exhibition in front of his hometown crowd in the fourth quarter. The Dallas native scored 20 of the Trail Blazers' 30 points in the period and pulled down six of his 10 rebounds. Aldridge was 8-for-10 from the field in the fourth.

NOT: The teams started a combined 0-for-15 from 3-point range before Jason Kidd finally connected with 3:28 left in the first half. For the game, Dallas shot 18.8 percent (3-for-16) from behind the arc -- Kidd was 3-for-3 -- and Portland shot 21.4 percent (3-for-14). ... Portland star Brandon Roy scored just four points, his fourth single-digit effort in his last five games.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: After playing a season-low 8:36 in Monday's loss at Memphis and scoring a combined five points (2-for-18) in his last three games, Portland forward Nicolas Batum provided a spark off the bench with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and a block.

INSIDE THE ARENA: It was "Totally '80s Night" at the American Airlines Center, featuring music by artists from the decade such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Journey and the Beastie Boys. ... Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman of the Dallas Cowboys was among the 19,531 in the crowd, the 374th consecutive sellout at the arena.

NOTABLE: After entering the game shooting a dreadful 23.7 percent (9-for-38) from the free-throw line, Mavericks center Brendan Haywood converted his first two attempts ... Portland's Andre Miller, who scored a career-high 52 in his last trip to Dallas on Jan. 30, tallied nine points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals. ... The Mavericks were 20-for-21 at the charity stripe.
