While the Dallas Mavericks have been shooting well lately, it's their defense that has sparked an 11-game winning streak.

The Mavericks seek their seventh consecutive victory at American Airlines Center on Saturday night when they face a Utah Jazz team looking to extend its road winning streak to seven.

While Dallas (18-4) is shooting 50.3 percent from the field over the last four games, the defending Southwest Division champs have limited opponents to 92.6 points per game and 43.3 percent shooting in its 10 victories. It's the longest streak for Dallas since a 13-game run from Feb. 17-March 10.

The Mavericks' defense has been even better at home during this run, holding teams to an average of 90.8 points on 41.2 percent shooting in the six victories.

"Well, give the credit to the defense," Caron Butler said following Thursday's 102-89 victory over New Jersey. "That's something we've honed in on since training camp. And we're doing a great job of capitalizing on that opportunity of playing home games and winning home games."

Coach Rick Carlisle, though, knows his team cannot afford a repeat of Thursday when the Mavericks committed 15 turnovers and missed 12 of 16 3-pointers.

"We can play better and we are going to have to play better on Saturday," he said.

Carlisle's team played well on both ends in a 93-81 victory in Utah on Dec. 3. Dirk Nowitzki made 12 of 18 shots and scored a team-high 26 points, while the Mavericks' zone defense held the Jazz to 39.2 percent shooting.

The loss snapped Utah's season-best seven-game winning streak and a five-game run at home.

The Northwest Division-leading Jazz (17-7), who play seven of nine on the road beginning Saturday, will try to return the favor as Dallas looks for its first seven-game home win streak since an eight-game run ended March 13.

Utah, meanwhile, is one victory shy of its first seven-game road winning streak since Jan. 20-Feb. 21.

Deron Williams scored a season-high 32 points and C.J. Miles had 19 of his season-best 26 in the fourth quarter as the Jazz capped off a 4-2 homestand Friday with a 117-105 victory over Orlando.

"They gave me some opportunities to get down the lane and make things happen and I took those," said Williams, who was held to 12 points and committed four turnovers in the Dec. 3 loss to the Mavericks.

The former Dallas-area high school star, though, has played at a high level in nine career games at American Airlines Center, averaging 21.0 points and 8.0 assists. Williams had team highs with 20 points and nine assists as Utah ended a five-game slide in Dallas with a 111-93 victory Jan. 9.

Nowitzki, who had 29 points and eight boards in that defeat, is scoring 24.7 per game on 57.3 percent shooting during the Mavericks' winning streak.

Andrei Kirilenko will likely see plenty of time against the former MVP. Playing with a strained right quadriceps on Friday, the Jazz forward had 13 rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

The Mavericks have won 14 of 17 at home in this matchup.

Nowitzki gets 31, leads Mavs to 12th straight win

DALLAS (AP) The Dallas Mavericks squandered a 25-point first-half lead before Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry saved them down the stretch.

Nowitzki had 31 points and 15 rebounds, and he combined with Terry for Dallas' final 21 points as the Mavericks extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 103-97 victory over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.

The Mavericks raced to a 29-4 lead midway through the first quarter, then had to rally down the stretch behind Terry's 12 fourth-quarter points and Nowitzki's nine.

"They slowly chipped away and chipped away and finally tied the game there in the fourth, and we had to really dig deep, grind it out and get some stops," Nowitzki said. "(Terry) got hot at the right moment which really helped, and made shots for us down the stretch. ... We definitely made it harder on ourselves than we should have."

Nowitzki went 10 for 12 from the floor.

"He's on a great run," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "You're not going to shoot 10 for 12 every night, but a guy of his skill level is capable of it."

DeShawn Stevenson added a season-high 17 points, going 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and Caron Butler had 16 points for Dallas.

The Mavericks put on a long-range shooting clinic, hitting 14 of 26 from beyond the arc to prevail in a matchup of Western Conference heavyweights.

Dallas-area native Deron Williams scored 19 of his 34 points in the first half and paced the Jazz, who had won nine of 11. Paul Millsap added 16 points and Ronnie Price scored 14 for Utah.

Dallas made 13 of 18 field goal attempts in the opening quarter, going 7 for 10 from 3-point range, and the Mavericks went on to stretch the NBA's longest current winning streak.

The Mavericks (19-4) are off to their best start since 2002-03 and the second-best in team history.

The Jazz tied it at 89 with 4:31 left on Williams' three-point play, and Utah was within 96-95 with 2:40 remaining on Price's 3-pointer.

But Nowitzki drove for a layup, was fouled and converted the three-point play for a 99-95 lead with 2:19 left.

Al Jefferson's follow shot with 29.9 seconds left got the Jazz within 99-97.

But Nowitzki drew a double-team and passed to Terry for a 3-pointer from the right corner with 7.6 seconds remaining to extend Dallas' lead to 102-97.

"I told Dirk that I'm in the corner and I'm ready," Terry said. "Dirk did a great job drawing the defense. The passer makes the shooter."

The Jazz beat Orlando on the road Friday night, and the players didn't get into their hotel rooms in Dallas until early Saturday morning.

The fatigue showed early as Dallas bolted to a 16-2 start capped by five consecutive 3 pointers, two by Nowitzki, two from Stevenson and one by Butler.

When the Mavs extended their lead to 21-2 on Tyson Chandler's alley-oop dunk with 5:58 left in the first quarter, Utah coach Jerry Sloan used a second timeout during the run to settle down his team.

"It looked like we weren't interested," Sloan said. "I hate to say that, but I have to be honest about it. I think you have to be interested in wanting to win and not looking for excuses to be tired or whatever the case may be."

The Mavericks went on to their 25-point advantage on Butler's 3-pointer before the Jazz finally got untracked, finishing the quarter with a 15-5 spurt.

"We moved the ball great and we got stops," Carlisle said of his team's fast start. "It was kind of a magical 6 or 8 minutes."

The Mavericks, who beat the Jazz for the 13th time in their last 15 meetings in Dallas, held Utah to 44 percent shooting from the field (36 for 81).

"This is the best Mavs team I've seen since I've been in the NBA," Williams said. "Across the board, they have so much talent and depth. But they're just playing a lot better defensively. This is by far the best defensive team we've seen from them."

NOTES: C Mehmet Okur (left Achilles' tendon) and G Raja Bell (strained right adductor) remain out for Utah. Okur hasn't played this season and Bell sat out his second straight game. ... The longest winning streak in Mavericks history was 17 games in the 2006-07 season. ... The Mavs held their annual Seats for Soldiers Night, with season-ticket holders donating their courtside seats to members of the Armed Forces.

THE FACTS: Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to help the Mavericks to a 103-97 victory against the Utah Jazz. Dallas extended its win streak to 12 games by holding off a Utah comeback attempt. The Jazz erased a 25-point first-quarter deficit to tie it, 89-89, with 4:31 left, but a Jason Terry 3-pointer with 7.9 left pushed the Mavericks back up by five. Terry had 12 of his 14 points in the final period. Point guard Deron Williams had 34 points for the Jazz.

QUOTABLE: "Our defense wasn't as good as it should have been. A lot of their shots were tough shots, but they came out with a lot more energy than us. It felt like they just wanted to blow us out of the game early."

THE STAT: Utah entered the game with five double-figure scorers. Except for Williams, the Mavericks held all of them to fewer than their season averages. Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko and forward/center Al Jefferson, who combined to average 29 coming in, managed 14.

TURNING POINT: Leading 96-95 with 2:40 left, Nowitzki hit a driving layup and drew the foul on Jazz forward Paul Millsap for a three-point play to put the Mavericks up by four. After a Jefferson put back, Terry hit his second 3-pointer of the quarter to put the game away.

HOT: Dallas went 13-for-18 in the first quarter, 7-for-10 from the 3-point line, to set a new opening-quarter season high with 34 points. The starters combined to go 13-for-14 and hit all seven of their long-range attempts. Dallas starters were 16-for-20 in the first half.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Dallas held the franchise's seventh Seats for Soldiers night. Fans with front-row seats donated their tickets to soldiers, who descended through the lower bowl toward their seats while fans gave a standing ovation. The Mavericks are 6-1 when they hold Seats for Soldiers night.

GOOD MOVE: With less than 30 seconds left in the first half, the Jazz cleared out to let Williams work against Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd. Williams let the shot clock wind to eight seconds, drove right and used a fake to get Kidd in the air. Williams leaned in, got the foul and hit the shot. He nailed the free throw to cut a 25-point Utah deficit 12 points, the lowest it had been since Williams worked the same move against Mavericks forward Shawn Marion at the end of the first quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH: Getting his second start for injured guard Raja Bell, Jazz guard Gordon Hayward missed both of his field goal attempts and went scoreless for the second consecutive night.

NOTABLE: Nowitzki had his second consecutive double-double and eighth this season. It's the 350th of his career...Nowitzki and Terry combined for all of the Mavericks' final 21 points...Ronnie Price was 3-for-4 from long range and scored a season high 14 points off the bench in 27-plus minutes for Utah...At 19-4, Dallas is off to its best start through 23 games since 2002-03 when it started 20-3.
