MIAMI (AP) There's not much LeBron James can absolutely say about what awaits when he returns to Cleveland as an opponent on Thursday night.

Fun, weird, tough, draining. James cites them all as expectations.

He's likely right on each count, and who knows how many more ways the emotional gamut will swing on Thursday when the Miami Heat visit Cleveland, the city James scorned on July 8 when he announced in a nationally televised special that he was "taking my talents to South Beach."

It'll be James' first time back as a visitor, and Cavaliers fans have been waiting months to not welcome him home.

"It's going to be tough, but I'm there to win a basketball game," James said after Tuesday's Heat practice and preparing for Wednesday's game against Detroit - almost forgotten given the magnitude of what looms Thursday. "I understand. I understand how passionate fans are about sports. I'm ready for whatever response that I'm going to get. It's going to be very emotional."

True, for all parties involved.

But the NBA might have helped James out a bit with this trip.

Because Miami plays at home Wednesday night, the Heat will not arrive in Cleveland until early Thursday morning. The team won't practice that day, just have meetings and a walkthrough at its hotel, which will be teeming with security - like always. They'll bus to the arena, play the game, head to the airport and leave for Miami.

No time to visit old haunts or old friends. A business trip, nothing more, nothing less, and James seems relieved by that.

"I think it's going to be very emotional for myself," James said. "I've got a lot of great memories in that city. So many times, from ups and downs, and a lot of things that I've done in my life, I give a lot of thanks to that city, lot of thanks to those fans for giving me the opportunity to not only showcase my talent but grow from a young boy to a man."

He's not from Cleveland, but Akron, about 40 miles south. The Cavaliers' franchise was reborn when they won the right to pick James No. 1 overall in the 2003 draft, and together, they soared. Cleveland won 349 games during James' seven seasons, second-most in the Eastern Conference over that span, and the Cavaliers' 127 wins in 2008-09 and 2009-10 - James' MVP years - topped the NBA charts.

So when he became a free agent, there was angst in Cleveland, understandably.

Angst turned to anger at 9:27 p.m. on July 8, when James revealed his decision.

"I think it's going to be something that none of us have ever seen before," Heat guard Dwyane Wade said of what's coming on Thursday. "If we can be a fan and watch it from afar, we all would, and not go. I would love to watch it and see as a fan, but I'm involved in it. It's going to be entertainment for everyone to watch."

Some Heat fans will gather to watch, at a team-sponsored event known as a "road rally."

Of course, it'll happen at the Clevelander - on South Beach. At least the Heat will be cheered somewhere on Thursday.

"I'm sure a lot of people are going to show their support for the Cavaliers in their own kind of way," Heat forward Chris Bosh said. "I don't think we know what to expect, but I'm sure it's going to be something like we've never seen before."

He'll see something like it on Feb. 16, when he returns to Toronto, his former home, for the first time as an opponent.

"I'm glad LeBron breaks the ice first," Bosh said.

It's a Cleveland homecoming for former Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas as well, and while he said the trip will be "a unique situation," he's almost certain not to face the level of venom that'll be directed at James.

Wade said he'll give James simple advice beforehand.

"The only thing I would say to him is not try to go out to get 100 points," Wade said. "Play the game. Let the game flow to you. I know he wants to play great, but sometimes you can force it too much. Just play basketball like LeBron James."

Which is what James says he'll do.

He won't break from his normal routine for this game, and doesn't plan to reach out to fans in any way, though he noted that he remains "very respectful" of the people who cheered him for seven years.

"It's one game," James said. "I know everyone is making it a huge deal, but it's one game."

James has 38 in homecoming, Heat win 118-90

CLEVELAND(AP) LeBron James insisted it was nothing personal. The final score said otherwise.

James scored a season-high 38 points - 24 in a third-quarter clinic - to lead the Miami Heat in a 118-90 blowout win over the Cavaliers, taming a hostile Cleveland crowd even before halftime Thursday night.

"I have the utmost respect for this franchise, the utmost respect for these fans," James said afterward. But he spent part of the second half taunting Cleveland's bench.

The game that mattered most to the franchise turned into its worst loss of the season so far.

"I thought he played great," Cavs coach Byron Scott said. "Simple as that."

It was James' first game back in the city where he played for seven years and won back-to-back MVP awards, but failed to win an NBA championship.

Before the game, fans peppered him with obscene chants and booed every time he appeared on the giant TV screens beneath the scoreboard. They held up signs that read, "Quitness" and "Play Like It's Game Five" - a reference to his playoff failure against Boston last season, when many fans - and owner Dan Gilbert - felt James had quit. There were five guys wearing a single letter each on their white T-shirts that spelled out: LeBum.

Dwyane Wade added 22 points, James Jones 18 and Chris Bosh 15 for the Heat, which played its most complete game of the season to improve to 12-8.

"This is the first time I have seen this connection all year long," said coach Erik Spoelstra, who's come under criticism for the team's slow start.

Daniel Gibson scored 21 for the Cavaliers, who have lost six of eight and now play seven of their next eight on the road.

James had 10 more points than Cleveland's starting lineup, including half during a 16-0 first-quarter run that immediately knocked the Cavaliers back. Ahead by 19 at the half, the Heat poured it, shooting 73 percent from the field in the third quarter. James went 10 of 12 during that stretch and Wade hit all four of his attempts.

James sat on the bench for all of the fourth quarter, with dozens of security guards and police lining the team's entrance to the court and guarding against objects thrown at him. After the clock ran out, he left without incident.

Throughout the game, James frequently bantered with his former coaches and fans at courtside.

"I turned one time and he was down there, talking," Scott said. "That's what he does most games. He talks to most guys on the bench."

The early spurt left a crowd of 20,562 with nothing left to cheer except James' occasional missed shot. He didn't miss many, finishing 15 of 25 from the field, to go with eight assists and five rebounds.

He never apologized to Cleveland or its fans, but said he appreciated the way he was treated as a young pro.

"So many things went through my mind," James said. "I have nothing bad to say about these fans at all. We grew from the year before I got here, a 17-win season to the last two years I was here, we had the best team in the league in the regular season. I understand their frustration. I was frustrated also because we didn't accomplish what we wanted to. I wish this organization and these fans, who are great, the best."

Cleveland native and game show host Drew Carey, Browns icon Bernie Kosar, Indians slugger Travis Hafner and most of the current Browns were cheered wildly when they made their way to courtside seats. Cincinnati Bengals receiver Terrell Owens even was in attendance.

By far, the loudest cheers were saved for Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who had ripped James after his decision, saying he quit on the Cavaliers during their season-ending playoff series with the Celtics last spring.

It didn't take long for the Heat to find their sense of urgency.

"It felt like a playoff game for us," Spoelstra said.

THE FACTS: For one night, Miami's LeBron James proved he can still be the king of Cleveland basketball. James scored a game-high 38 points, passed for eight assists and almost single-handedly turned the much-hyped game against his former team into 48 minutes of garbage time. In the end, James and the Heat emerged with a 118-90 victory and the feeling that maybe this was the night they became the team everyone said they could be. Dwyane Wade added 22 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Heat (12-8). The Cavs (7-11) were led by Daniel Gibson's 21 points, including going 4-for-6 on 3-pointers.

QUOTABLE: "We came in here with one goal and that was to win a basketball game, and we did that. This was our most complete game of the season from start to finish."

THE STAT: Nine. That's how many turnovers the Heat committed for the entire game, including zero from James in 30 minutes. "It resulted in us getting easy baskets and being efficient," James said.

TURNING POINT: The Heat led 59-40 at halftime, but James truly put the game away when he scored 24 points in the third quarter (or one less than the Cavs) on a sizzling 10-for-12 shooting. It was among the finest quarters James ever played in Quicken Loans Arena.

QUOTABLE II: "I know we can play a lot better than we did tonight. Like I told the guys in there, I haven't lost any faith in them."

HOT: James, Wade and Chris Bosh (15 points) shot a combined 31-for-52 from the field.

NOT: The Cavs' starting backcourt of Mo Williams (eight points) and Anthony Parker (three) combined to shoot just 3-for-12.

GOOD MOVE: As always, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra put forward James Jones into the game when the Heat began to struggle from the perimeter. It didn't take long for the sharpshooting Jones to change all that as he finished 5-for-7 on 3-pointers (and 6-for-8 overall) to score 18 points and give the game's most underrated performance.

BAD MOVE: With the Heat up by 33 points late in the third quarter, a fan stood on the edge of an in-arena balcony and waved a Miami jersey with James' name on the back. After getting doused with beer, he was forcefully removed by security.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Heat reserve guard Mario Chalmers likely isn't on a lot of fantasy rosters, but he may be starting to earn more minutes. Chalmers finished with nine points, connecting on 3 of 4 3-pointers.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar as well as current Browns Josh Cribbs and Shaun Rogers all sat in the stands sporting Cavs jerseys. The same was true of Cleveland native and comedian Drew Carey.

NOTABLE: The Heat's bench outscored the Cavs' bench by a 63-27 margin. ... The Cavs play seven of their next eight on the road. ... The Cavs and Heat are each 1-7 against teams with winning records. ... After the game, James said, "I'm tired now. I'm very, very exhausted. I didn't get much sleep last night and I didn't get much sleep today in my usual routine. But I'm glad we played well as a team."
