Timberwolves-Mavericks Preview

While Dirk Nowitzki is still leading the way in Dallas, contributions from teammates appear to be a big factor in the Mavericks' longest winning streak of the season.

The Mavs look to win their seventh straight when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

Dallas (13-4) is looking to close a three-game homestand on a high note after defeating Houston 101-91 on Monday. Nowitzki finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Shawn Marion had 14 points and 10 boards and Caron Butler scored 13 of his 19 points during a decisive 17-6 third-quarter run.

Butler is averaging 13.9 points, the second-lowest mark of his career, but he seems to be heating up. He scored a season-high 23 in the previous game, a 106-95 win over Miami on Saturday.

"When a guy gets going, our guys do a good job of finding him," coach Rick Carlisle said. "We aren't doing a lot of play-calling right now."

Nowitzki has led Dallas with 27.5 points per game during the winning streak, but his teammates are playing a big role as well, helping Dallas average 105.3 points the last four contests. Marion has scored 14.8 points per game during that stretch - 4.0 above his season average.

"Everybody is coming into their own a little bit right now and we're really supporting each other and we're holding each other accountable when we need to," Marion said. "We're playing as a complete team right now and we're competing at a high level."

The high-scoring Mavs will face a Minnesota team that is among the NBA's worst on defense, allowing 110.2 points a contest. Its last eight opponents have reached the 100-point mark.

The Timberwolves (4-13) are coming off a 104-94 loss to Golden State on Saturday. The Warriors went 12 of 18 from 3-point range and Minnesota turned the ball over 22 times, leading to 32 points for the Warriors.

"I was disappointed with our focus and effort," coach Kurt Rambis said. "For the first time all season long, I don't think our guys were there."

Kevin Love had 21 points and 22 rebounds, his second straight 20-20 game and fourth of the season. Michael Beasley added 28 points and nine boards.

The Timberwolves held a 55-32 rebounding edge.

Minnesota has lost four in a row and six of seven, although it managed to take San Antonio to overtime before falling last Wednesday.

"We've got to learn from it," swingman Corey Brewer said. "You've got to come every night and play hard."

Love, averaging a league-best 14.9 rebounds, might have trouble putting up those kinds of numbers against Dallas, which has outrebounded its last four opponents by 6.8 per game.

Dallas has won 15 of 16 matchups with Minnesota, though the loss came Feb. 5 at home by a 117-108 score.

Nowitzki has scored at least 20 points in 12 straight games against the Timberwolves, averaging 24.8.

Marion, Chandler lead Mavericks over Timberwolves

DALLAS(AP) Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle went to his reserves often Wednesday night, and they responded with a stellar all-around effort.

Shawn Marion scored 16 points, leading a productive effort by Dallas' backups, and the Mavericks beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 100-86 for their seventh consecutive victory.

"When you step on the court, you've got to bring it at the same level as the starters or you'll be back on the bench," Marion said. "It's that simple."

J.J. Barea scored 14 points and Jason Terry had 12 as Dallas' reserves outscored their counterparts 59-32.

Tyson Chandler had 14 rebounds in the third quarter, setting a Mavericks record for any quarter, and finished with 18 overall. Lorenzo Williams and Popeye Jones set the previous quarter mark of 12 boards, both in 1996.

Chandler had only four rebounds at halftime.

"I thought I had a bad first half and didn't bring enough energy," Chandler said. "I made some dumb fouls and Coach kind of got on me at halftime, so I wanted to come out and bring some energy and do some more out there."

The Mavericks were playing their sixth game in nine nights, and they were able to rest stars Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Caron Butler. Nowitzki had a season-low 10 points, the same total as Butler.

Dallas has won 16 of the last 17 meetings with Minnesota.

Kevin Love, the NBA's top rebounder, had 12 points and 15 boards for the Timberwolves, who lost their fifth straight. Michael Beasley scored 16 as Minnesota fell to 1-9 on the road.

At the shootaround earlier in the day, Carlisle talked about the importance of matching Minnesota's rebounding intensity and Dallas responded with a 50-46 edge on the boards. Backup center Brendan Haywood had 10 rebounds and Marion finished with eight.

"That was a point of emphasis for the game," Carlisle said. "Everybody was focused on keeping a body on their man and knowing where Love was on the floor."

Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis said his team was hurt by 17 turnovers, leading to 20 Dallas points.

"We turned the ball over way too much, particularly in the first half," Rambis said. "And guys got discouraged. Even when it got into the 10-point range in the third quarter, our guys still had their heads down, that was a little bit of a disappointment. So, the guys are young, they've got to get to the point where they do little things that turn the game in their favor."

Marion's 11 points contributed to a 33-14 first-half advantage in reserve scoring, and the Mavericks held a 55-43 edge at the break.

Brian Cardinal hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Dallas over the final 2:09 of the third quarter, completing a 14-6 run and helping the Mavs to an 83-64 advantage heading into the fourth. Dallas went on to lead by as many as 24 in the final quarter.

"They know how important it is to put an opponent away when they have an opportunity," Carlisle said.

NOTES: Minnesota PG Jonny Flynn will report to the team's development league affiliate in Sioux Falls, S.D., for a game on Friday as he works his way back from hip surgery. Flynn has yet to play in a game this season. He had surgery on his left hip in July and has started ramping up his workouts over the past few weeks. ... Dallas F Steve Novak played in his third game this season. He was active in place of G Dominique Jones, who's playing a few games for Frisco of the D-League. ... Dallas' 55 points matched its best first half of the season.

THE FACTS: Shawn Marion scored 16 points and Tyson Chandler grabbed 18 rebounds, including a franchise-record 14 in the third quarter, to propel red-hot Dallas to a 100-86 home victory Wednesday against Minnesota. It was the fifth straight loss for the Timberwolves, the seventh straight win for the Mavericks and the 400th career victory for coach Rick Carlisle (400-274).

QUOTABLE: "They have a lot of veteran guys. They know how to win. They know how to take away certain things on the offensive end and make you play your weaknesses and not your strengths. That has to do with their coaching and it has to do with the veteran guys." -- Minnesota forward Kevin Love.

THE STAT: Six different Mavericks drained at least one 3-pointer, with Dallas shooting 41.7 percent (10-for-24) from behind the arc. Marion, DeShawn Stevenson, Jason Terry and Brian Cardinal each sank two and Jason Kidd and J.J. Barea made one apiece.

TURNING POINT: The Wolves had a chance to trim the deficit to single digits midway through the third quarter, but Stevenson picked off a pass by Darko Milicic and lobbed it to Chandler for the two-handed, alley-oop slam. The dunk put the Mavericks on top 67-54 with 6:07 remaining and they never looked back, leading by as many as 24.

QUOTABLE II: "We're never small out there on the floor. Whenever you're small, that allows teams to attack you on the inside. When teams see no true centers out there, they like to attack the basket. Whether it's me or Tyson out there, we're there to provide a presence in the middle and that's a big reason why defensively we're so much better this year." -- Mavericks center Brendan Haywood, who had seven points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

HOT: Led by Marion, Barea and Terry in double figures, the Mavericks' bench outscored Minnesota's reserves by a 59-32 margin. Dallas improved to 9-2 when its reserves win the scoring battle. Tonight, they also outscored the Mavericks' starters, 59-41. Terry also contributed seven assists and three steals.

NOT: Minnesota had 12 turnovers in the first half, leading to 15 points for Dallas. The Timberwolves finished with 17 turnovers and fell to 1-11 this season when committing 16 or more.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: After becoming the first player in 18 years to notch four 20/20 games in the same calendar month (Atlanta's Kevin Willis, February 1992), Minnesota forward Kevin Love opened December with 12 points and 15 rebounds for his 13th double-double.

INSIDE THE ARENA: To recognize World AIDS Day, players from both teams wore special red-and-white warm-up shirts and many wore red headbands, wristbands and sneakers. Coaches sported red ties and AIDS ribbons on their lapels.

ROOKIE WATCH: The Mavericks' decision Monday to send seldom-used rookie Dominique Jones to the NBA D-League quickly produced results. Playing for the Texas Legends, he tallied 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting in a 139-112 win Tuesday vs. Austin. He added five assists, three boards and two steals with just one turnover in 31 minutes in his debut. With Dallas, he averaged 6.2 minutes in nine games.

NOTABLE: The Mavericks have won 16 of the last 17 meetings with the Timberwolves. ... Chandler's 14 third-quarter rebounds broke the Mavericks record for a quarter of 12, shared by Popeye Jones (April 6, 1996) and Lorenzo Williams (Feb. 21, 1996). ... It was the Mavericks' 300th victory at the American Airlines Center (300-80).
