Surprisingly, the Denver Nuggets put up their highest point total of the season without their leading scorer. They're hoping to have him back in time to face the Milwaukee Bucks, though.

The Bucks have taken four of the last five meetings with Denver, but travel to face a Nuggets team Wednesday night which has won four in a row and six straight at home.

Carmelo Anthony was in the starting lineup and scored two points Sunday night against Phoenix, but took himself out 2:48 into the game after feeling ill, ending his streak of 134 regular season games with double-digit points.

Anthony, averaging a team-best 23.8 points, had been experiencing flu-like symptoms since Nov. 22 against Golden State, but tried to give it a go against the Suns.

"He wanted to try it," coach George Karl said. "Melo knows how important he is, but he probably made the right decision. He didn't look very good. He didn't look like a healthy guy."

Without Anthony, the Nuggets topped their previous high this season by 18 points and had their highest point total since scoring 147 in double overtime at Seattle on April 6, 2008.

After missing two games with a sprained right wrist and broken nose, Chauncey Billups returned to the lineup and was one of seven players who finished in double figures during a 138-133 win.

Billups, who scored a season-high 25 and dished out eight assists, went 4 of 6 from long distance as the Nuggets (10-6) matched a franchise record with 16 3-pointers versus the Suns.

Despite the offensive outburst Sunday, the Nuggets allowed a season-worst 44 points in the final 12 minutes and almost let the game get away.

"We've got to do a better job of that," Arron Afflalo told the team's official website. "Closing games is one thing when they're tight, but when you have double-digit leads with single-digit time left in the fourth quarter, we have to do a much better job of getting stops and managing the clock."

Milwaukee lost for the sixth time in seven games, falling 109-88 at Utah on Monday night as it continued to struggle from the field.

The Bucks (6-11) have connected on 37.9 percent of their attempts in the past six contests and are averaging 90.8 points on the road - among the worst in the NBA.

While his team has had issues scoring, Brandon Jennings has heated up by averaging 28.0 points over his last three games.

Jennings had mixed results against the Nuggets during his 2009-10 rookie season, scoring 32 in the first matchup and nine in the second - both Bucks wins.

Chris Douglas-Roberts, who missed the first 15 games of the season with an eye injury, had 11 points in his debut Saturday versus Charlotte before scoring 19 against the Jazz.

"I feel pretty good but as a whole we just have to do better." he said. "We're not supposed to lose this bad."

Andrew Bogut missed his fourth straight game with back spasms Monday and Drew Gooden was held out with a foot injury as coach Scott Skiles was without his two leading rebounders.

"They were short tonight, but that's a great team," Utah's Al Jefferson said of the Bucks. "When they're healthy, they'll be really good. That coach (Skiles) makes every team he ever coached play hard."

Milwaukee is limiting opponents to 92.9 points per game, but could have its hands full against Denver, which is averaging 112.9 at home.

Nene scores 24, Anthony ejected in Nuggets' win

DENVER(AP) Carmelo Anthony had another early departure and once again the Denver Nuggets took it in stride.

Nene scored 24 points and the Nuggets weathered the third-quarter ejection of Anthony to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 105-94 Wednesday night for their season-best fifth consecutive win.

In a 138-133 victory Sunday night over Phoenix, Anthony played just 3 minutes before being forced to the bench for the rest of the game by flu symptoms.

J.R. Smith had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Chauncey Billups added 16 points for the Nuggets, who defeated the only team to sweep the season series from them last year. Milwaukee went 2-0 against Denver in 2009-10.

John Salmons scored 21 points for the Bucks. Corey Maggette added 17 points and Larry Sanders and Brandon Jennings had 14 apiece. Sanders also had 10 rebounds and eight blocks, matching Orlando center Dwight Howard for the NBA season high.

Anthony had 14 points when he was tossed with 2:40 remaining in the third for arguing with officials over a non-call, drawing two quick technical fouls.

"We were in a good place when Melo left and I thought we kept it up and sustained it and finished off the game for the first time in a while in the fourth quarter," Nuggets coach George Karl said.

Smith said everyone chipped in to help make up for the absence of Anthony, just like in the Phoenix game Sunday, when the Denver bench scored a season-high 70 points.

"We moved the ball," Smith said. "Chauncey did a great job of getting to the free throw line and Nene did a huge job in the middle."

Down by five at the break, the Nuggets regained the lead for the first time since early in the first period when Nene completed a three-point play to put Denver up 62-61 with 5:31 remaining in the third quarter.

The Nuggets scored the next six points on a 3-pointer by Arron Afflalo and three free throws by Billups, including one for a technical foul call on Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles.

Milwaukee had closed to 68-65 when Anthony drove to the basket for a layup attempt and Sanders blocked the shot against the backboard. Anthony complained immediately to the official closest to him, Eric Dalen, that there should have been a goaltending call.

When he persisted, Anthony was hit with the first technical.

During a television timeout after that initial sequence, Anthony renewed his complaint with another official, Jason Phillips, and was quickly hit with a second technical, leading to his automatic expulsion. Anthony was escorted off the floor.

The Nuggets nevertheless maintained command, taking a 76-71 lead into the fourth quarter.

"They had their best player out with Melo getting thrown out of the game," Maggette said. "We really should have capitalized on it but we didn't. We just didn't do the things we needed to do while they continued to execute."

Denver stretched its lead with a 7-0 burst that included a pair of free throws and a basket by Al Harrington, who had 10 of his 14 points in the final quarter. After Billups hit a 3-pointer with 7:39 left, Denver had a 90-79 cushion.

"We moved the ball really well, we stepped into our shots, we knocked them down (in the first half)," Skiles said. "We just got a little stagnant in the third quarter and we had a hard time getting out of it."

Milwaukee led by as many as 11 in the second quarter, going in front 36-25 on Sanders' 16-foot jumper with 7:18 left in the period. The Nuggets didn't let the Bucks get any further in front, chipping away at the lead over the final 5 minutes of the first half to pull to 50-45.

NOTES: Bucks F Drew Gooden was back in action after being held out of the previous game because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot. ... Milwaukee was missing center Andrew Bogut (neck) and forward Carlos Delfino (neck), who did not make the trip. ... Howard blocked eight shots against Minnesota on Nov. 3. ... The Nuggets had lost three straight against Milwaukee, their longest active losing streak against one team.

THE FACTS: Nene had 24 points, J.R. Smith scored 20 and 10 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets overcame the ejection of Carmelo Anthony to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 105-94 on Wednesday night to extend their winning streak to five.

QUOTABLE: "When I got those DNPs two weeks ago it really set into my mind that I've got to change the way I look at things. Come in here with my head up and work hard. That's all they ask for two, three hours a day. It's the least I could do."

THE STAT: Nene was nearly perfect for the night. He was 8-for-9 from the field and 8-for-10 from the foul line.

TURNING POINT: After Anthony picked up his second technical in a span of 46 seconds. The Nuggets increased their lead from three to eight late in the third quarter. The key play came when Smith grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a 3-pointer to make it 75-67 with 1:30 left in the third quarter.

HOT: Forward Corey Maggette returned to the lineup and gave the Bucks a boost off the bench. Maggette scored 17 points and had four assists.

NOT: Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups continues to struggle with his shot. He came into Wednesday's game shooting 36.6 percent from the field and didn't help his average with 4-for-10 night from the field.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Smith has increased his fantasy value with another strong scoring night. He had 30 against Phoenix on Sunday and is averaging 25 over his last two games.

GOOD MOVE: After losing Anthony, Nuggets coach George Karl put in Al Harrington, who scored 11 of his 14 points the rest of the way to help keep Milwaukee from getting too close.

QUOTABLE II: "They don't have beer in restaurants on the road?"
-- Karl, who now has 997 career coaching wins, on the reality he will probably win his 1,000th away from home.

BAD MOVE: Anthony's temper got the best of him. With the game in doubt he picked up his first technical for arguing with an official after he thought goaltending should have been called on his blocked shot. He continued arguing at the TV timeout and got his with the second technical.

ROOKIE WATCH: Milwaukee forward Larry Sanders made his third start a good one, scoring a season-high 14 points and 10 rebounds in 33:30.

NOTABLE: Sanders had eight blocks, tying Orlando's Dwight Howard for the high this season. It's the most blocks by a rookie since Sean Williams had eight for New Jersey on Dec. 18, 2007, and it's the most by a Milwaukee rookie since Alton Lister had nine on April 9, 1982.
