Trail Blazers-Nets Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers have won five straight over the New Jersey Nets, and are 4-1 against Eastern Conference opponents.

That bodes well for the Trail Blazers at the start of this four-game trip Sunday night when they take on the Nets.

Portland (8-7) is seeking to avoid its first three-game slide since Jan. 25-29. The Trail Blazers got leading scorer Brandon Roy back Friday, but his return wasn't enough in a 97-78 loss to New Orleans.

Roy had 27 points on 10-of-20 shooting as he showed no ill effects of a knee injury that occurred in a 107-87 road loss to the Hornets on Nov. 13.

"I felt like I had a pretty good rhythm," Roy told the Trail Blazers' official website. "Legs got kind of heavy there at times, but for the most part, I felt like I was able to get some good looks and I made some shots."

Roy wasn't the problem Friday as the rest of the Trail Blazers combined to shoot 35.7 percent.

"They did a good job reading our plays," Roy said. "They took certain plays away from us."

Portland expected to get center Joel Przybilla back from a ruptured patella tendon, but the 7-footer's return was delayed because of the stomach flu. The Blazers were outrebounded 48-27 without him.

Przybilla is listed as questionable for the opener of a stretch of four games against teams from the East.

"We've just got to do more, if that's possible," coach Nate McMillan said. "The hustle game, knocking down our shots, making plays. We're good in certain areas for a quarter or two, but nothing consistent."

Portland has outrebounded New Jersey (5-11) in every game of this win streak. Roy is averaging 23.4 points on 52.1 percent shooting in that span to lead the Trail Blazers.

The Nets are back home after falling 102-86 at Philadelphia on Saturday. Brook Lopez scored 25 points and Devin Harris added 19 for the Nets, who shot 40.7 percent.

"It was a tough loss for us," coach Avery Johnson said. "They turned up the pressure on their defense. We couldn't score or defend in the fourth quarter, which has been a problem for us recently. They made shots."

Johnson holds the highest winning percentage (83.3) among active head coaches with a minimum of 10 games against the Trail Blazers, compiling a 10-2 mark while coaching the Dallas Mavericks.

Nets forward Travis Outlaw will face his former team for the first time. Outlaw was selected 23rd overall in the 2003 draft by Portland, and never averaged more than 13.3 points in his six full seasons with the Blazers.

Outlaw had been a bright spot for New Jersey, earning a starting job and averaging 15.1 points in seven games from Nov. 9-20. He's totaled 18 points, however, in his last three contests.

Lopez is seeking his first victory over Portland after averaging 22.0 points on 60.3 percent shooting and 9.0 rebounds in four losses.

Harris scores 25 to lead Nets over Blazers 98-96

NEWARK, N.J.(AP) Avery Johnson was so angry after New Jersey's performance in a loss to Philadelphia on Saturday night that the Nets coach called for an impromptu shoot-around early Sunday morning, hours before the Nets were slated to face the Portland Trail Blazers.

"We knew he wasn't too pleased right after the game, even before he said we were practicing this morning," Nets center Brook Lopez said. "He didn't like the effort we gave and he let us know about it. He was pretty loud this morning."

The Nets got the message.

Devin Harris had 25 points, including a clutch 3-pointer with 1:11 left, and eight assists to lead New Jersey Nets to a 98-96 win over the Trail Blazers on Sunday night.

"Don't make too much of it or in the manner of how I called it," Johnson said after the win. "They knew I was disappointed and I just needed to see their faces this morning. I couldn't sleep anyway. I didn't want to raise my voice tonight. They got enough of that this morning."

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Nets (6-11), who handed the Trail Blazers (8-8) their third straight loss.

The two teams traded the lead five times during the fourth quarter, before Harris nailed the long jumper from beyond the top of the key. Portland turned the ball over on its next possession.

"Devin was the one who really had the chance to spark us," said forward Chris Humphries, who had 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. "I think the way we came back shows some growth. We've had some tough losses this year and we didn't want another one."

Anthony Morrow scored 16 points and Brook Lopez added 13 for the Nets.

"It wasn't typical for an NBA player to get up and practice in the middle of back-to-back games," said Humphries. "We can't react to that. We knew we had to come back tonight and compete."

Reserve Wesley Matthews scored 25 points, Brandon Roy had 21 and LaMarcus Aldridge added 20 for the Blazers.

The Nets shot 52.5 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3-point range and 82.9 percent from the free throw line. They made 29 of 35 free throws, including all eight in the closing minute.

Roy scored seven of his 15 first half points in the final six minutes before intermission, including a fall-away jumper at the buzzer that gave Portland a 52-44 halftime advantage.

The Blazers then scored seven straight points in the opening stages of the third quarter, with Aldridge nailing two long jumpers, giving Portland its biggest lead at 62-50 with 8:48 left.

The Nets scored the next eight points, six coming from the free throw line, to pull within four at 62-58 with 6:26 left on a corner jumper from Lopez.

Harris nailed a 27-foot jumper that tied the game again at 64 with 4:24 left in the third.

Miller then took control for the Blazers, scoring six of his team's next eight points to give the Blazers a 74-69 lead. Marcus Camby had a putback as the third quarter ended to put Portland ahead 78-73.

The Nets scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter, capped by Harris' two free throws, to take an 80-78 lead with 10:14 remaining. The two teams then traded the lead back and forth before Harris' late 3-pointer gave the Nets the lead for good.

"We don't feel like we're an 8-8 team," said Matthews. "In the NBA, you play a lot of games in a short amount of time and you have to be able to get through this and move on."

Notes: Troy Murphy made his return to action for the Nets after missing six games with a sore foot and back. Murphy made his first two shots of the game, one on a post-up and the other on a drive. ... The Nets announced that troubled second-year player Terrence Williams reported to the D-League's Springfield squad Sunday and will remain with that team until further notice. ... Nets shooting guard Brandon Morrow now ranks second all-time in 3-point field goal percentage for those with 500 or more attempts. Morrow's .452 career percentage from long range trails only Steve Kerr's .454 mark. ... Reality TV star Kim Kardashian was in attendance.

THE FACTS: The New Jersey Nets rebounded from a fourth quarter meltdown in Philadelphia on Saturday night to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers, 98-96, at Prudential Center. Devin Harris (25 points, 8 assists, only 12 field goal attempts) and the three-headed power forward monster of Kris Humphries, Derrick Favors and Troy Murphy efficiently paced the Nets. Wesley Matthews, Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge all finished with 20-plus points for the Blazers, who led 62-50 early in the third quarter.

QUOTABLE: "We were calm. I didn't want to raise my voice; they got enough of that this morning."

THE STAT: Humphries, Favors and Murphy combined for 24 points and 14 rebounds on 9-10 from the field.

TURNING POINT: With 4:30 remaining in the third quarter, Harris drained a pull-up 3-pointer in transition to tie the game at 64-64. The bucket, a low-percentage shot against the run of play, punctuated a 14-2 run and signaled the onset of another nip and tuck affair at The Rock; with Portland seemingly rounding into form despite injuries, and the Nets down double digits just four minutes earlier, the home team could have folded.

QUOTABLE II: "I still don't feel like I played at my max. I mean, I started out pretty good, but then they ran the double team at me, so it's kind of like I still can't find my rhythm. So I still gotta find niches 'cause they're not gonna let me catch it midrange no more."

HOT: Aside from two frighteningly easily 3-pointers after things were all but locked up, Matthews (25 points, 9-14 from the field) sank big shot after big shot for the Blazers.

NOT: Before those clutch freebies, Outlaw (7 points, 2-9 from the field, 5 fouls) had a quiet night on the offensive end against his former team.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Troy Murphy (four points in 9:54 of game action) was activated. Murphy played well in his limited minutes, and early in the second quarter he was featured in a unit that boasted Harris as its only other viable go-to option.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Kim Kardashian sat courtside...Sly performed a routine with female and male Nets cheerleaders, set to De La Soul's "Me Myself and I"...Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina" played after a top-of-the-key jumper from Johan Petro. This has been a Prudential Center staple, and it's probably safe--or unsafe depending on your opinion--to assume that this has something to do with fossil fuel puns...Trey Songz urged Nets fans to make some noise on the Jumbotron. Led by Anthony Morrow (3-6), the Nets shot 7-14 from three...Rapper Memphis Bleek also appeared on the Jumbotron, noting that the "Roc is in the building." Nets minority owner Jay-Z, head of Roc Nation, was not seated courtside adjacent to the Nets bench.

ROOKIE WATCH: Favors was active around the rim in the second half, finishing with five field goals attempts, five rebounds, two dunks, one putback layup, and one attempted dunk that led to two free throws in exactly twelve minutes of action.

NOTABLE: The Nets are now 5-2 when Harris scores at least 20 points. The two losses came at home against the Magic (91-90) and on the road in Boston (89-83) ... Aldridge (9, points, 3 rebounds, 2 fouls) started out the first quarter aggressively, but his production tapered off; interesting because of the Blazers' lack of frontcourt depth ... At 6:47 in the third quarter Humphries forced a 24-second violation with two blocked shots. He had four blocks on the night. Had Morrow not fouled Matthews late in the third quarter, it would have been five ... Roy swished a midrange stepback at halftime, giving Portland a 52-44 lead. Roy was 6-8 from the field for 15 points at that point. Many of Roy's makes on the night were typical for him, but still dazzling conversions to behold ... Johnson mentioned in his postgame press conference that East Coast-based back-to-backs with short commuting distances in between games--like Philadelphia to Newark--are easier to handle.
