Thunder-Rockets Preview

Winning on the road typically takes toughness and perseverance. The Oklahoma City Thunder have been excelling in both areas lately.

The Thunder look to win six consecutive road games for the first time in nearly six years when they visit the struggling Houston Rockets on Sunday night.

Oklahoma City (11-5) seemed to be headed to a second straight defeat Friday in Indiana, trailing by 14 points early in the third quarter and by five with 2:02 remaining in regulation, but it rallied to send the game to overtime and went on to win 110-106. Russell Westbrook finished with a career-high 43 points, while Kevin Durant scored 11 of his 25 in the final two minutes and overtime to send the Thunder to their sixth win in seven games.

"We were rewarded for our hard work and perseverance," said Durant, whose three-point play tied it at 96 with 45 seconds to play in regulation. "It was a good win for us. (It) was one of those games where we had to grind it out."

Oklahoma City has had several games like that during its five-game road winning streak. Two games have gone to overtime, while the other three have all been one possession games in the final 12 seconds.

"You like to hear words like tough and scrappy," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "Our team is improving in those daily."

Oklahoma City is trying to win six consecutive road games for the first time since Dec. 8-Jan. 3, 2005, when the franchise was based in Seattle. It has been about the same amount of time since the franchise's last win in Houston, an 87-85 victory Feb. 22, 2005. The Thunder have lost 10 straight there, their longest active road losing streak against any opponent.

Oklahoma City appears to have a good chance of snapping that streak, however, as the banged-up Rockets (4-11) are off to their worst start since opening 4-12 in 2005-06.

The Thunder also defeated the Rockets 116-99 on Nov. 17, as Durant had 24 points, while Westbrook added 21 and 12 assists. Oklahoma City has won the last two in the series after losing 19 of the previous 20.

Playing without the injured Yao Ming and Aaron Brooks, who are both still "weeks away" from returning, according to coach Rick Adelman, Houston is coming off Friday's 99-89 loss to Charlotte. The Rockets, losers of five of six, led by seven points at halftime, but were outscored by 11 in the third quarter and unable to recover.

"We need to be smarter than that," said Luis Scola, who was held to 11 points - 10.5 less than his season average. "We've got to know those runs are coming and we've got to not let that happen."

Houston also needs to shoot the ball better. The starting five shot 34.7 percent (17 of 49) and the team finished with a season low in points. The Rockets have lost all seven of their games when scoring fewer than 100 points.

"It's a make-or-miss league. By that, when you miss shots, the sky is falling down," said Shane Battier, who is averaging 8.3 points on 27.3 percent shooting in his last three games. "When you make shots everything is honky-dory. Sometimes it is as simple as that."

Martin, Battier lead Rockets over Thunder 99-98

HOUSTON(AP) The Houston Rockets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder at their own game.

Kevin Martin scored 23 points, Shane Battier hit 4 of 6 attempts from 3-point range and the Rockets held off a late surge from the Thunder for a 99-98 victory Sunday night.

The Rockets have been blowing fourth quarter leads this season and the Thunder have been pulling out games in the closing minutes.

Before the loss, Oklahoma City had been 8-0 in games decided by seven or fewer points and 3-0 in games decided by one point.

"We knew it was going to come down to the wire just the way it was going," Martin said. "In the third quarter, they would make a run, then we would make a run, so that's what we've been practicing and I'm just glad it paid off tonight."

The Thunder trailed most of the game but rallied in the fourth quarter and took it down to the final second, when Kevin Durant missed a short jumper.

The loss snapped Oklahoma City's five-game road winning streak and extended its losing streak to 11 in a row at Toyota Center.

"It's just a great win," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "It was a very good team we played. They were going to attack and keep coming at us but we did enough to win and that's what we wanted. We wanted our guys to play hard for 48 minutes and that's what they did."

Battier scored 18 points and hit three of his 3-pointers in the third quarter to help the Rockets maintain the lead. Houston was 10 of 17 from 3-point range. Kyle Lowry scored 14 points and Luis Scola added 13.

Russell Westbrook led Oklahoma City with 23 points, including 10 in the third quarter when the Thunder rallied from a 50-42 halftime deficit for a brief 63-61 lead with 5:27 to go in the period. Westbrook also had 10 assists.

The Rockets held Durant, the NBA's leading scorer, to 18 points, well under his 28.1 average entering the game. Battier got the big assignment against Durant.

"That's a tough assignment chasing that guy around all over the place but I tried to tell Shane that he's been pretty much getting nothing but stand-still 3s," Adelman said.

The Rockets took a 77-71 lead into the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma City never led in the fourth but cut it to 99-98 with 30 seconds to play on a basket by Westbrook. Lowry missed a shot with 5 seconds left and Thabo Sefolosha got the rebound before Durant's final attempt.

"It felt great when it left my hand," Durant said. "It's very frustrating. It's tough for me that it came up short. I've only had one (game winning shot) in four years in this league. Every one of my shots felt good. It was just one of those nights."

The Thunder haven't won at Toyota Center since an 87-85 victory on Feb. 22, 2005.

Serge Ibaka scored 12 of Oklahoma City's first 14 points, but Scola had 11 points and Martin added eight in the first quarter, and the Rockets held a 33-25 lead at the end of the period.

"We battled back and no one on our team gave up and we had a shot to win," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "Kevin's shot was on line but just a little short. We had a chance to win down the stretch."

Houston stretched the lead to 37-25 to open the second quarter, its biggest lead of the first half. The Thunder cut it to eight in a cold shooting quarter for both teams, and the Rockets held a 50-42 lead at halftime.

Notes: Oklahoma City trailed Indiana by 14 points in the third quarter on Friday night. Durant scored 11 of his 25 points in the final two minutes and overtime to pull out the victory. ... Westbrook has recorded nine double-doubles this season. Ibaka had a game-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots. The Thunder is 7-2 with Ibaka in the starting lineup.

THE FACTS: The Houston Rockets fought off a couple of fourth-quarter surges by the Oklahoma City Thunder to claim a 99-98 victory on Sunday at Toyota Center. Kevin Martin led the Rockets (5-11) with 23 points, while Shane Battier came out of a shooting slump to chip in with a season-high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting.

Russell Westbrook scored 23 points and dished out a game-high 10 assists for the Thunder (11-6), who lost on the road for the first time in six games. Kevin Durant added 18 points on a lackluster shooting night, which included a misfire on a potential game-winning 20-foot jump shot as time expired.

QUOTABLE: "I'm sure I was a little nervous at the end, but we finally made enough plays to secure a win. It's about time we beat a good team at home."

THE STAT: Houston found a shooting rhythm from beyond the arc Sunday, making 10 of 17 attempts from 3-point range.

TURNING POINT: After Oklahoma City scored five straight to cut its deficit to 86-84 with 5:28 remaining in the fourth, the Rockets went on a 7-0 run in which they grabbed four offensive rebounds to create some much-needed breathing room.

TURNING POINT II: A Westbrook jumper sandwiched between two key defensive stops in the final minute gave the Thunder a chance to win the game on the last possession. But Durant could not connect on a 20-footer, allowing Houston to escape with the win.

HOT: Both teams came out of halftime on fire. The Rockets shot 5-for-6 from 3-point range in the third quarter, while the Thunder made 11 of their first 13 shots from the field en route to a 12-for-18 effort in third.

NOT: Durant, who shot 7-for-18 Sunday, has fallen into a shooting slump over the last two games, making only 16 of his last 44 attempts.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Rockets point guard Kyle Lowry continued his recent upswing with another solid performance Sunday. He matched a season high of 14 points, distributed a team-high eight assists, grabbed six rebounds, and blocked two shots. Lowry is averaging 9.3 points, 7.6 assists, and 2.25 steals in his eight starts this season.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The public-address announcer introduced Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson during the third quarter of Sunday's game. Johnson received a thunderous standing ovation from the Rocket faithful, producing the loudest cheers of the night. Earlier in the day, Johnson was ejected from the Texans' game with the Tennessee Titans for fighting with Titans defensive back Cortland Finnegan.

GOOD MOVE: Instead of going with Luis Scola at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Adelman chose to stick with second-year forward Jordan Hill. The move paid off as Hill's athleticism and length gave Oklahoma City's Jeff Green fits. Hill also made his presence felt on the offensive end, scoring eight points and grabbing four rebounds in the fourth.

QUOTABLE III: "My time came, and I just tried to take advantage of it. Just go out there and do things I love to do, and that's playing good basketball -- rebounding, defensive stops, and just doing the little things that help my team stay in the game."

BAD MOVE: Thunder forward Serge Ibaka scored 12 of Oklahoma City's first 14 points on 5-for-5 shooting, but only attempted two shots from that point. Houston's defense seemingly had no answer for Ibaka early on, but Ibaka's teammates inexplicably failed to feed him the ball as the game progressed.

NOTABLE: Thunder center Nenad Krstic missed his second game in a row Sunday with a sore lower back. ... The Rockets have won 11 consecutive games at home against the Thunder franchise. ... Scola has scored in double figures in 12 straight games. ... Houston is 3-0 on Sundays this season. ... The Rockets won for the first time this season when scoring less than 100 points.
