Following a disappointing road loss, the Los Angeles Lakers seem to have a very good chance to get back on track.

They've never lost at Staples Center against the Indiana Pacers, who visit Los Angeles on Sunday night to open a daunting four-game road trip.

Los Angeles (13-3) appeared well on its way to winning its sixth straight game Friday, leading Utah by as many as 19 points in the second quarter, but the Jazz charged back and handed the Lakers a 102-96 loss.

Kobe Bryant had 31 points and Pau Gasol added 21, but Los Angeles shot a season-worst 26.7 percent from 3-point range and failed to reach the 100-point mark for just the third time.

"There will be some tough times on the road," coach Phil Jackson said. "The road is not always easy out there."

Los Angeles has fared much better at home, especially against the Pacers.

The Lakers, 8-1 at Staples Center this season, have won 11 straight games in Los Angeles against Indiana, their longest active home winning streak over an opponent. The Lakers, winners of 17 of the last 18 meetings in Los Angeles, last lost to the Pacers at home Feb. 14, 1999. They moved to Staples Center the following season.

It didn't really matter where these teams met last season, as Los Angeles outscored Indiana by an average of 22.5 points in winning both games. Although both Bryant and Gasol played limited minutes, the 12-time All-Star shooting guard averaged 26.5 points and 6.5 assists while the 7-foot Spaniard averaged 17.5 points and 14.5 rebounds.

Indiana (7-7) has played a league-low five road games but will nearly double that total this week.

After playing in Los Angeles, the Pacers, who have had only two road games since Nov. 4, visit Sacramento on Tuesday and Utah the following night before concluding the trip in Phoenix on Friday. Since the 2006-07 season, Indiana is 3-13 in those four cities.

"Going out West, we feel we can play with any of them," Indiana's Danny Granger said. "We will give ourselves a chance to win."

The Pacers, 3-2 on the road, had plenty of chances to beat Oklahoma City on Friday but lost 110-106 in overtime. They led by 14 points early in the third quarter and by five with 2:02 remaining in regulation.

"We're confident we can play with anybody," said forward Josh McRoberts, who had a season-high 13 points. "That's not enough. You've got to go out and win against anybody."

The Pacers have struggled to do that in games against the league's best teams.

Since Nov. 13, Indiana is 3-0 against opponents with losing records, but 1-3 against teams over .500. The Pacers' lone victory over a winning team was a 93-77 win at Miami on Monday.

Indiana lost Friday despite having all five starters score in double figures for the first time this season, with Granger leading the way with 30 points.

Granger, averaging a team-high 22.0 points, had little luck against the Lakers last season, scoring 23 points on 6-of-17 shooting in the two meetings.

Pacers top Lakers 95-92 in 1st road win at Staples

LOS ANGELES(AP) If Roy Hibbert and the Indiana Pacers keep knocking off the NBA's biggest names, it might not be too long before these youngsters are right up there with the superstars they're beating.

Hibbert had 24 points and 12 rebounds, and Kobe Bryant scored 41 points but missed two tying 3-point attempts in the final seconds of Indiana's landmark 95-92 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.

Danny Granger added 18 points for the Pacers, who followed up their surprising road win over Miami six days ago with an even more stunning victory in Los Angeles' banner-festooned home in the opener of a four-game road trip.

"To come into L.A. and beat the world champions on their home court is a huge win for us," Granger said. "It gives us a lot of motivation and confidence on this West Coast road trip."

Hibbert was blissfully unaware his Pacers had never beaten the Lakers on the road since Staples Center opened its doors in 1999, not even in three tries in the 2000 NBA finals. Indiana had lost 11 straight regular-season games to the Lakers on the road since its last win on Feb. 14, 1999, shortly before Staples Center opened.

"We know this is a big win for us, but we can play with anybody," Hibbert said. "We don't want to get too high off this moment. In the future, we don't want this to be a surprise."

The Pacers couldn't get comfortable with Bryant carrying his teammates nearly all the way back from a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but Hibbert's dunk with 16.4 seconds left provided enough cushion to carry them through.

On the final possession, Bryant - who went 14 for 33 while taking shots away from his struggling teammates - had a good look at a tying 3-pointer with 12 seconds left.

"Oh, my heart sank," Hibbert said. "He's a closer. He's the Black Mamba."

After Ron Artest rebounded and the Lakers got discombobulated, Bryant badly missed a final chance from well behind the line right before time expired.

"When he missed and they got the rebound, my heart sank again," Hibbert said. "But it worked out somehow."

Darren Collison scored 14 points for the Pacers, who have stayed competitive despite their obvious lack of offensive firepower this season by playing stellar defense. Only Utah has held opponents to a lower field-goal percentage this season than Indiana and the Lakers, which had both allowed 43.1 percent shooting entering the game.

Yet Bryant wouldn't allow the Pacers to run away. He scored 23 points in the second half as the two-time defending champions rallied, pulling to 93-92 on Pau Gasol's free throws in the final minute.

Gasol had 13 points and 12 rebounds while getting outplayed by Hibbert down low, and Lamar Odom added 15 points and 11 rebounds in the Lakers' second straight loss after a five-game winning streak. Los Angeles lost in a game that also went down to the final minute at Utah on Friday night.

"We played a lethargic game," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I was encouraging them from the first timeout ... to play harder. I thought they outhustled us, and obviously it paid off for them."

Los Angeles' home streak against Indiana was its longest against any opponent, but the Lakers dropped to 8-2 at home this season. The Pacers earned just their fifth road win over the Lakers in 38 trips.

Bryant said any criticism of the Lakers' poor shooting and struggling offense was "ignorant," claiming the Lakers won their titles with defense.

"We're going to score points, but we've got to shore up the defense," Bryant said. "We've got to execute better. We missed too many assignments, and we didn't play with the right energy. ... We can't put all the pressure on the shooters to make shots all the time, because then they start thinking about their shot instead of just relaxing and shooting it."

Bryant scored 15 consecutive points for the Lakers to close the third quarter, and the Lakers chopped Indiana's lead to five points with a 13-3 run into the fourth. Indiana held the Lakers to one basket in the next five-plus minutes, but Artest hit a 3-pointer with 2:43 left to trim the Pacers' lead to 89-86.

"We know he's going to score," Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said of Bryant. "The main thing I thought we did an exceptional job of, is we kept running it back at them. We're one of the top defensive teams in the league right now. If we defend, then we can win."

The Pacers traded baskets with Bryant until Brandon Rush missed a 3-pointer and Gasol hit his free throws. But Gasol then lost track of Hibbert down low, and the center slammed home his final points.

Notes: Lakers rookie Devin Ebanks didn't play while battling the flu, leaving Los Angeles with just 11 players in uniform. G T.J. Ford played for Indiana despite a similar illness. ... Fans near courtside included Anthony Kiedis and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stedman Graham and Arsenio Hall.

THE FACTS: Roy Hibbert did his fair share of dropping weight and adding different workouts into his offseason regimen such as mixed martial arts, but it was his work in the film room that helped him the most. Hibbert watched footage of every offense and defensive sequence he had against every big last season.

The extra work showed.

Behind Hibbert's play and the team's solid defense the Pacers shocked the Lakers, 95-92, Sunday at Staples Center.

The Pacers (8-7) have now won three of their last four games, which includes a victory over the Heat and now the two-time defending champions. Even more eye-popping is the Pacers stopping an 11-game regular season road losing streak to the Lakers. Indiana's last victory against Los Angeles was on Feb 14, 1999 when the Lakers played in the Forum.

The Lakers (13-4) have now dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season. This game was especially difficult as they lost to the Jazz two nights ago despite leading by as many as 19 points. In this contest, Los Angeles trailed by as many as 15.

For Indiana, Hibbert tallied a team-high 24 points and 12 rebounds. Danny Granger added 19 points and Darren Collison chipped in with 14. Los Angeles was led by Kobe Bryant's game-high 41 points and Lamar Odom added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Despite Indiana dominating for much of the game, Los Angeles cut the deficit to 93-92 with 34.1 seconds to go. Hibbert had a key dunk, and the Lakers trailed by three. With under 10 seconds left in the game, Bryant missed a 3-pointer from the right wing, but Ron Artest managed to snag the rebound. He pulled the ball back outside the arc and gave it to Bryant, who missed a 29-footer.

QUOTABLE: "He's a beast in the post and we'll continue to give it to him. Roy had a phenomenal game. If he continues to play like that, it's going to be hard to beat us."

THE STAT: 4306 -- The number of days that have elapsed since the Pacers last won a road game in Los Angeles.

TURNING POINT: The Pacers led 51-45 at halftime and opened up the third quarter on an 8-0 run. The Lakers never did recover as they trailed the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "We're not getting enough stops and teams are comfortable and confident ... Maybe we needed to lose so we'd have to look ourselves in the mirror."

HOT: Bryant scored 15 straight points for the Lakers in the third quarter, including a back-to-the-basket, over-the-shoulder flick over three defenders. He was fouled on the shot, but missed the free throw attempt. Bryant finished the game with 41 points on 14-for-33 shooting.

NOT: Laker guards Derek Fisher and Shannon Brown combined to go 4-for-17 from the field.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Hibbert was 5-for-5 in the first half for 13 points and finished the game with 24 points on 9-for-13 shooting. More importantly, Hibbert proved that he could hang with the best inside as he contained Pau Gasol. Gasol struggled from the field, going 5-for-15 from the field. Gasol also abandoned his inside game because of Hibbert's activity. "He played so many minutes," said Hibbert of Gasol, who played 45 minutes. "Coach said that he wanted me to get up and down the court and put pressure on him. Obviously they don't have Andrew [Bynum] back so he has to carry a large load."

GOOD MOVE: Pacers coach Jim O'Brien trusted T.J. Ford, who went 2-for-9 shooting, down the stretch, playing him in the final 8:17 even though Collison had a solid game up to that point. Despite struggling for much of the game, Ford hit a driving layup in the game's final minutes and then found Hibbert on a slip-and-roll for a dunk, which was the game's final basket.

BAD MOVE: In the game's final seconds, Artest was wide open under the basket after he grabbed Bryant's missed 3-pointer. Instead of taking it up for an uncontested layup, which would have extended the game as there was still eight seconds left on the clock, Artest dribbled the ball out and ended up passing it to Bryant, who fired a contested 29-footer, which came up short.

NOTABLE: The Lakers shot 38.6 percent from the field to the Pacers' 43.2 ... Indiana had a 19-10 advantage on second-chance points, eight of which came in the final quarter.
